A/N: This is it! Thank you all so much for helping, supporting, and inspiring me during this short-lived project lol! I absolutely adore Gohan, and Vihan, and will most likely keep focusing and improving my views on this ship. Anyway, I hope you enjoy!
Warning: some dialogue is taken directly from the episode where Goku returns, but I did a lot of rehashing too :o lmao. I'm sure you'll notice the original dialogue when you see it. Just wanted to stay true, and give credit where it's due.
:-)
Reflecting on what had to be the best week of his life, Gohan smiled up at the ceiling of his shared bedroom. The tournament, also known as the day Goku would return to Earth for a day, was finally tomorrow. The teen had spent the past few days up until yesterday with Videl and Goten, coming to the conclusion that this was the best training he had ever experienced.
During the last twenty-four hours before the big day, Videl had left the half-Saiyan boys to train in her own gym. Vegeta was too busy being amazed by his young son's Super Saiyan strength and perfecting his own skills to bother the boy. Piccolo was doing his own thing on Kami's old lookout, while Krillin was showing off his skills to impress his wife and daughter.
With all his distractions out of the way, this gave Gohan much needed time to be alone with his little brother. The sound of Goten's little footsteps were heard scrambling to Gohan's bedside, where he started rapidly pounding his older brother's toned stomach to wake him up fully. The poor guy was so use to his sleep being disturbed that he wasn't really bothered by it anymore. He just turned his head to the side to get a good glimpse of the beaming mini-Goku, a twinkle in the little boy's eyes.
"Are we going to train or not, Gohan!" The boy jumped up and down, laughing at the messy way his brother's hair pointed up. "I'm ready! I'm ready! I'm ready!"
The eighteen year old jumped to his feet abruptly, scaring the little boy and causing him to fall on his bottom. Gohan's laughter filled the room, reaching a hand out to assist Goten. "Yeah, come on little guy!"
The two made their way to the wooded area behind their perfect, cozy home - a place they were all too familiar with by now. The brothers began to levitate, making a good distance between themselves and the grassy ground below. As if they were synchronized together, they began sparing at a much faster and harder rate then they once started with.
Determined scowls remained on both faces as they successful blocked each hit that was being thrown, causing Goten to become slightly frustrated as his back began getting closer and closer to the mountain behind them. He turned into a little golden Super Saiyan, slightly throwing Gohan offguard as the squirt's strength began to increase. Gohan was the one being backed up now, forcing him to go super as well.
The two golden orbs in the sky danced around each other in perfect rhythm, until a defeated yell echoed through the meadows as the smallest of the orbs descended to the ground with a thud. Wincing, the little Goten turned back into his base form while Gohan landed right beside him, doing the same. A smile crossed the older brother's face at the determination the little boy has began showing, knowing he was going to do extremely well in the tournament and even beyond.
With his eyes still closed, Goten whined. "It's not fair! As hard as I try, I still can't beat you!"
That's what you get for showing Videl my butt, you little brat...
Gohan's smile increased. "Hey, I've been doing this a lot longer than you have, little guy." He took a seat on the grass beside Goten, laying down on his back so they were in the same position. "But those were some nice moves you pulled!"
Upon hearing the compliment, Goten's eyes shot open with a cheesy grin on his face. "Thanks, Gohan!" The boy stared up at the clouds for a minute, a single thought crossing his mind. "Do you really think our father is going to be there?"
"Guess it's going to be your first time seeing him, huh?" Gohan put his arms behind his head, forming his own pillow. "You nervous?"
"Yeah," Goten replied sheepishly. "I'm afraid he won't like me."
Sudden deja-vu rushed through Gohan's smart mind as he looked over at the little boy with inquisitive eyes.
Gosh, Dad said the same exact thing...
He decided to give the same answer he gave his nervous father, as it was the truth. "Goten, I know for a fact Dad is going to love you. He's so excited about meeting you."
The little boy's eyes narrowed, the look all seven year olds get when they're calling someone out on their BS. "How would you know?
Gohan rolled his eyes at his brother's suspicion. "He talks to me, Goten! Gosh! How many times have I told you this?"
"Like through a phone?"
The eighteen year old scratched the back of his head, laughing nervously. "Yeah, something like that."
"Hmmm, that's very interesting..." Goten scratched his chin. Gohan looked him, still nervous about his little brother's unpredictability. True, the small boy was innocent and sweet, but when he had a feeling he was being lied to, it was hard to know what he was going to do. Abruptly, the boy stood up and pointed an angry finger at his older brother. "Because Heaven doesn't have phones!"
The eldest one stifled in his laughter at the exaggeration in Goten's voice. "Ah, true! But Other World does!"
Nice! You gotta high five yourself later for that one, you sexy smart Saiyaman!
"It's the same thing!" Goten retaliated, stomping his foot. His frustration turned into sadness suddenly, realizing something Gohan feared he was going to ask sooner or later. "But even so, why doesn't he ever call...me?"
Gohan sat up, reaching an arm out to the little one, signaling him to fall into it. Doing so, Gohan pulled the small boy to his side in a sweet brotherly embrace. "The thing about Dad, is that he's a natural born fighter. It's in his blood, just like it is in half of ours. We can't hold it against him. I use to, but then I came to realize that's just what Saiyans do."
Goten shook his head sadly, not wanting to listen to his older brother's words. "That's not true, Gohan! It's not true! Trunks' dad takes him to parks and has been with him ever since I've been alive!"
Gohan blinked at the outraged Goten, taking in what he was saying. Vegeta wasn't the first person he thought of when someone mentioned the word 'father', or even 'parent' for cripe's sake. Despite not being there for Bulma when Trunks first breath in this world was taken, and completely denying the fact he was his son, Vegeta came around after witnessing Future Trunks' death. It was the first time he had experienced lost that actually meant something to him, and from that moment on Gohan had seen the change in his uncle. Everyone did.
He frowned. While Trunks had a father there to raise him, his best friend didn't. At least Gohan got to experience having Goku beside him through his first years of life, and up until the Cell Games. Goten just believed the man his older brother admired and praised was a myth. Finally realizing what he had to say, Gohan tightened his hold on his little brother. "Calm down, little guy. I need to tell you something that I don't want you to ever forget, okay?"
Goten sniffed a little after silently crying, but nodded.
"Good," Gohan smiled and said gently. "I don't want you telling this to Trunks, okay?"
The spiky-haired nod happen again.
"Believe it or not, Uncle Vegeta wasn't the best father around. You and Trunks would both hate him if you saw how he treated his family. When you look at him now, you could never tell. Now, he's the type of father I know you desperately want around so bad. My point here, is that people change. Experiences make your heart grow bigger. I'm being honest with you when I say that Dad deeply regrets his decision now about staying in Other World. He wants to make the best of tomorrow, and be the type of father you deserve to have."
Gohan watched as his brother absorbed everything, and grinned as his brother's beaming smile was almost blinding. "Wow, you mean it, Gohan!?"
The teen smiled, giving the boy wrapped in his arms a noogie. "Of course!"
"Hey, stop!" The boy giggled, escaping his brother's grip.
Seeing Goten's mood back to his usual happy self, Gohan stood up. "Another round, buddy?"
"You betcha!"
As the young boy levitated up to the sky, Gohan looked at him in silent awe. Even if his father was only here for a day, he would always have Goten around to keep the image of the messy-haired Saiyan fresh in his mind.
Dad, I wish you just stayed with us here for good.
The teen had no idea how his wish would one day be true.
"I've ridden galactic slugs faster than this vehicle!" The gruff voice of Vegeta filled Bulma's Capsule Corps jet. The gang had all gathered for the first time in years as they decided it was best not to fly and be seen on the way to the island where the World Martial arts Tournament was being held. The blue-haired pilot reached a hand over to smack her husband.
"Hush!" She rolled her eyes, peaking over at Gohan who was dressed in his Saiyaman outfit she designed. "So, is Goku really going to show up?"
"I don't doubt it!" Gohan smiled warmly at his old friend, and she returned it before bringing her attention back to the front.
Roshi popped his head up, a goofy grin on his face. "Of course he'll be there! When has Goku ever let us down?"
Gohan turned to his left, pointing a finger at the hair of the once-bald man beside him. "I bet he'll hardly recognize you, Krillin, with your goofy hairdo!"
"Hey!" Krillin defended himself. "It's stylish!"
Laughter erupted from everyone but of course Vegeta and 18, the familiar happiness that the group always brought Gohan warming his heart. He noticed Vegeta was side-eyeing him, and remembered something vital. "So listen, Uncle Vegeta. You kids, too!" He looked behind him at Trunks and Goten. "Let's agree to not turn into Super Saiyans during the fights."
Vegeta scowled. "What for, boy!?"
Bulma spoke before Gohan could. "That's a good idea. If people see you guys transform, there's a good chance they'll recognize you from the broadcast of the Cell Games. And after that, well, the journalists would get all your names off the entry form and-" a terrified look crossed her face. "Ugh! TV cameras would be all over my front yard!"
"Yeah!" Gohan laughed. "Then you'll all know what I have to deal with in high school, it's a mess!"
Vegeta rolled his eyes at both of the people he had come to grow fond of. Secretly, of course. "I don't see the problem. When the journalists come, I'll just destroy them."
Bulma growled, sending blue daggers his direction. "Vegeta, will you behave yourself!?"
Not the one to argue with his wife, he sighed. "Fine, whatever. There will be no Super Saiyan transformations in the battlefield. Of course, I'll still have the advantage." The all too familiar cockiness of his voice made Gohan sweatdrop.
Some things never change...
"Don't worry about us, Dad!" Trunks beamed. "We won't go Super Saiyan, either."
"Thanks," Gohan smiled gratefully at them. "That means a lot, guys."
"Hey guys! I think that's the island right there!" The group stretched their necks up to look out the windshield in front of Bulma and her co-pilot, Vegeta. Sure enough, the beautiful island that the World Martial Arts Tournament was always held at was in their line of vision. This was a new sight for Vegeta, Gohan, Trunks, Goten, and 18 - they've never seen or competed in the huge event before. Oh, but they were more than ready.
"Better adjust my costume!" Gohan pulled out his headwrap and sunglasses, a distasteful glare from Vegeta sent his way. Noticing the look, Gohan laughed nervously and blushed. "What!?"
"What the hell are you wearing this time!?"
The teen scratched the back of his head, the redness on his face matching the color of Bulma's dress. "It's the new and improved Great Saiyaman!"
The distaste grew even more evident on his uncle's features, but his focused slowly returned to the island. "Like father, like clown."
The jet landed in the designated area, and out-stepped the greatest (and perhaps unsung) heroes known to mankind. The youngest of the group pushing past the adults when the latch opened, jumping up and down at the excitement among the crowd. "Where's Dad!?" Goten whined, looking behind him at the Great Saiyaman. "You said he'd be here!"
"Relax, son!" Chi-Chi was the last to emerge from the jet, making sure everyone gotten off safely. "We just barely landed. I'm sure he's here somewhere."
Frowning, the antsy Goten searched the crowds for the messy hair eerily similar to his. Not finding a single strand, he sighed heavily. The sound of people cheering was thankfully loud enough so his mother didn't hear. "The champ is here!" The crowd chanted. "He's here! He's here!"
The group looked over at where the commotion was coming from, and sure enough they saw the bumbling Hercule striking poses for the camera. Krillin rolled his eyes, placing his hands on his hips. "Oh look everyone, it's the almighty Lord Hercule."
Oolong elbowed Gohan's knee, the only place the short pig could touch. "Don't you know his daughter, Gohan?"
"Oh yeah," Trunks whistled. "He knows a lot about her."
The blushing Gohan flailed his arms wildly. "Shut it, Trunks! You're embarrassing me!"
"We already know about your involvement with the idiot's daughter," Vegeta scoffed, then mumbled so low that only Gohan could hear. "No need to be ashamed."
Calming down with his face returning to its normal color, Gohan sent a thankful smile towards his uncle whom rejected it with a scowl. Goku's eldest son shook his head. Uncle Vegeta put a shield up around everyone else, but only a select few knew the truth behind the icy eyes.
Thanks for everything, Uncle Vegeta.
Krillin whistled, pointing towards some nearby trees. "Look who finally made it!"
Gohan followed the direction of his long time friend's finger, expecting to see his father but finding another great hero instead. The tall green Namekian emerged from the shadows like the mysterious being he was, and sent a small smile Gohan's way as he approached him. "Long time no see, my friend. I hope-... Gohan, what the hell are you wearing!?"
"Aw!" Gohan stamped his foot like a petulant child. "Not you too, Piccolo!"
He should be the one to talk! With those pointed shoes and turban.
The teen blushed.
Come to think of it, I use to dress just like him!
"Any sign of your father yet?" Piccolo's infamous devilish smirk appeared on his features. "I've been looking forward to seeing how much his Other World training has paid off." The Namekian knew he was no longer on par with Goku's strength as he once was, but his formal rival always left him in awe at just what he was capable of.
Gohan shook his head. "Nope, but-"
"Hiya, guys!"
Suddenly sensing an extremely large ki, Gohan's heart dropped and the entire group turned slowly around to see just who they knew it was. There, in all his Saiyan glory, was Goku, donning a golden halo above his head. "D-Dad..."
"GOKU!" Oolong shouted, his fists clenching in order to contain himself from running over to the big lug. He, too, had grown quite fond of the once little boy that use to be his strongest enemy.
The tears of joy ran down the faces of Bulma, Chi-Chi, and Krillin who just couldn't control himself. Gohan's eyes were beginning to water, and he was thankful they were hidden behind dark sunglasses. He quickly glanced over at Vegeta, whose eyes were hard but there was still a tint of relief in them. Gohan knew he would beat his ass if he ever said anything, but Vegeta truly missed his ol' pal Kakarot.
Looking at all the expressions, Goku chuckled loudly, the sound of it filling certain hearts with warmth they haven't felt in a long time. "You guys look like you've seen a ghost or something!"
Trunks, standing alongside his father, rolled his eyes. "Oh great," he muttered. "Five seconds of meeting him and he's already cracking Dad jokes. A dork just like his son..." Still, Trunks was slightly in awe at the power level he was sensing from this man. Could it be true what Gohan's been saying, how he's the strongest in the universe? The lavender haired boy rolled his eyes. No, of course not.
That was his father.
Chi-Chi was the first to run towards the man, the tears falling down her face with no control. "Oh, darling!" She wrapped her dainty arms around the muscular Saiyan, and cried into his chest. "I've missed you so much!"
Gohan watched as his father wrapped his arms tightly around the small of her back. "I've missed you, Chi-Chi." The two held each other for a moment, before the woman in his arms withdrew from him. As Goku began making his way towards him, Gohan felt a tug on his pants. Looking down his shoulder, he saw Goten shyly hiding behind his legs.
"Hi, my son." Goku smiled warmly, proudly, at his eldest child he hadn't seen in seven years. The look in his eyes made Gohan feel weak, not sure what he was suppose to feel. Instead of speaking, he reached his arms out to embrace his father who returned it just as strong for a brief moment. The sweet sight of a father and son reuniting was all that Krillin could take before breaking down into a sob.
After they released each other, a strand of spiky hair caught Goku's attention. "Hey, Gohan. I think there's a little me behind your leg!"
"Say hi, Goten!" Chi-Chi called to her boy, and he obliged albeit nervously. The boy fully popped his head out from the side of Gohan's legs, and Goku knelt down so he was a little more closer to the boy's height.
"Hi, my name is Goku!" The Saiyan said gently, a goofy but sweet grin on his face. "What's yours?"
"Hi," Goten fully revealed himself, standing inches away from Goku. "My name is Goten."
The two looked at each other for a moment before Goten's eyes swelled up with tears. He had fought every urge in his body, but it could no longer be contained. He ran towards the adult version of him, his arms wide open and waterworks spilling from his eyes. "Dad!"
Goku caught the miniature one in his arms. Standing up, he held Goten high above his head. "You wanna be an airplane, Goten!?"
"Yeah, yeah!" Goten cheered, and Goku raised his youngest son up higher and spun him around gently. The laughter that came from the small boy captured Goku's heart completely, shaking away the doubt he had held inside him for so long. It would take a lot of time, but Goten would learn to love the man.
Baba, sitting high on her crystal ball, interrupted the moment. "Remember, Goku. You have twenty-four hours starting now. I'm sorry, this is all I can do."
The Saiyan brought Goten down, holding him tightly to his chest. "Thanks, Baba." With a nod, the gypsy took off into the sky, the crowd of people too busy focusing on Mr. Satan to notice to odd woman.
Still holding Goten in the same way he held Gohan at a young age, Goku motioned with his head for his old friends and family to follow him. "Come on, guys! We better get checked in!"
Gohan watched as everyone but his father began walking ahead, and he realized Goku was waiting for them to be farther ahead so the three could talk. Finally placing Goten on the ground, the father began to speak. "So, Goten. Tell me the truth." Goku winked at Gohan, a look of embarrassment and puzzlement at what was going to come next filling his entire face. "Does Gohan have a girlfriend?"
"Yes!" Goten laughed evilly, rubbing his hands together. Gohan groaned, wishing the boy's shyness lasted longer than what it did. The small boy stuck his hand inside his gi, pulling out an infamous red card.
"WHERE DID YOU GET THAT!?" Gohan yelled, stamping his feet for the nth time today. "GIVE IT TO ME!"
"No!" Goten beamed, handing the card to his look-alike father. "Dad, this is the mushy letter from Videl that Gohan sleeps with every night!"
Much to Gohan's misery, the laughter of his father caught the attention a girl coming their direction. She had long, black tresses pulled up in a pony tail. Wearing an all-too familiar white tank top and shorts. Wearing an all-too familiar scowl on her face. Videl began marching her way towards Gohan like she was getting ready to kill him. Something she had promised in the very beginning if someone ever read that card...
"Adorkable!" Goku wiped a tear away from his eye. "She called you 'adorkable'! I guess you kinda are, son!" His father and little brother howled, tears falling from their eyes as Gohan desperately tried snatching the card away from his father.
"GOHAN!"
"NO!" Gohan began backing up, not realizing Videl was closing in on him. "VIDEL, NO! I CAN EXPLAIN!"
The beautiful blue eyed girl lifted up her foot to remove the heavy boot attached to it. With his eyes widening, he realized what was happening.
She's going to beat me to death with her shoe!
The teenager took off, his madwoman chasing after him screaming things he would rather not have repeated. Watching the two disappear through the crowd, Goten looked up at his stranger father.
"Dad?"
The huge smile that Goku had since first seeing the boy had remained on his face. "Yes, my son?"
"Do you think they'll get married?"
The Saiyan laughed, kneeling down so he could tickle the small boy. "Seeing the way she screamed at him? I wouldn't be surprised!"
Somewhere, high in the sky, Baba looked at her crystal ball as soon as Goku said that. Seeing a vision, she winked down at wherever the half-Saiyan boy named Gohan and his feisty human girlfriend Videl had disappeared to.
As fate would soon have it, Goku was spot on.
I hope you guys enjoyed this! I had the time of my life writing this fic! :-) I have another story up called "Walking Towards the Sunset". It's a Bardock and Gohan centered story, and of course knowing me there is going to be Vihan mixed in there, too! So if you need your fix, I still got ya covered! Lmao. Thanks for reading my weird story.
Thank you all for everything :). I'm truly going to miss updating this.
