A/N: Here is the part 3 to my story. It kind of ends in the same place it began: with the episode. The dialogue is directly from the episode (I'm sorry!), but my original piece chapter/part 2, kind of ties them together so it makes more sense then in the actual show (in my opinion). So, I hope you enjoy this final little snippet of a great episode.
"You wanted to know why I became a cop," Jamie said, looking at Danny as he came up to lean against the car, "You don't get a feeling like that making partner."
"Yeah," Danny mumbled. He shifted his gaze to the asphalt, glanced briefly at Jamie, and sighed. "Look, I was out of line. I've got no right to tell you whether you should be a cop or lawyer or anything else."
Jamie felt a slight moment of triumph, but his mind immediately went to what Linda had said. "We were both out of line," he corrected his brother, willing to share in the blame.
Danny nodded. "Maybe," he agreed. He had to gather his strength to continue. "I know you and Joe were close. I miss him. I miss him every day." And I missed my chance to tell that I respected him, that I loved him, Danny thought to himself.
"I know you do," Jamie said. "He loved you, Danny."
Danny paused at that, his eyes blurring with tears. He didn't trust his voice and had to swallow a couple times to gather his emotions back in. "I mean, you were his best friend," he said, almost regretfully.
"So, how come you and I are just brothers?" Jamie asked.
"I don't know," Danny admitted. "Maybe that's something we could work on, huh?"
"I'm up for that," Jamie said.
Danny looked like he wanted to say something else, but he just said, "Better get home for dinner."
"Yeah," Jamie agreed.
As they started to get in the car, Danny couldn't stand the heavy emotions that engulfed him. He shoved them aside as he tried to regain his usual composure. "By the way," he said, "that was my collar yesterday."
Jamie rolled his eyes. "Oh, here we go." But he smiled as he slid into his seat.
The two brothers glanced at each other, grinning. Maybe they could figure this out.
