~oOo~

Kuroko remembers watching the ball fly through the air in awe and landing neatly into the hoop. Her father cheers and her novel lays abandoned in her lap, unable to tear her eyes from the men on the TV playing basketball. Her father cheerfully explained the basics of the game and players and statistics and special moves some players used.

It's love at first sight and it doesn't take Kuroko much effort to convince her parents to get her one. At school the next day she goes to her school library and checks out a book on the in depth basics of basketball, afterwords she goes to an empty court in her neighborhood that everyone forgets is there.

The feel of leather slapping back into her hand has her marveling at how right it felt. She tries to shoot, misses and watches as the ball rolls to a stop at the foot of a boy with what looked like cookie crumbs on his round face.

Ogiwara is all smiles and cheers and basketball.

And at that particular time, he is everything.

They spend many afternoons and weekends at the small basketball court; drinking cold lemonade, pouring over glossy basketball magazines, (sometimes incorrectly) playing basketball. And unlike her mother, Ogiwara doesn't care that Kuroko is a girl trying to play basketball.

The brunette tilted his head in confusion, "Just because you're a girl doesn't mean that you can't play! Besides its lots of fun playing with you, so anything else doesn't matter!" He declared fiercely, eyes hard with determination and conviction and Kuroko couldn't help but admire him for it.

"Yes, lots of fun."

~.~

"Sucks that we can't go to the same school, but hey we can call each other every day!" Ogiwara said, spinning the ball absentmindedly as they walked back from their usual court. "We can join our school's teams and we can play against each other."

Kuroko sipped her milkshake, "They won't allow boy and girl teams to play on the same court."

He shrugged, grinning widely. "Then we'll meet at each other's games, you'll go to my games and I'll go to your and we can cheer each other on. Simple right?"

The blunette huffed lightly, reaching over and carefully wiping away the crumbs from their lunch off his face. "Then we'll see each other on the court." Kuroko breathed her hand dropping down to her side. Her fingers warm and tingly from the warmth on Ogiwara's face.

~.~

"Hey Kuroko! Happy Valentine's Day! Just wanted to say thanks for the chocolates, they were really cute and were delicious! J XOXO~~"

Kuroko smiled at the short text message, pleased that the chocolates had made it to Ogiwara in time. Since their schools were pretty far apart and both were busy with their teams she'd made the chocolates early and carefully packaged them so that they wouldn't go bad during their three day trip to Ogiwara's address.

The blunette had been worried that the chocolates would have accidently gotten crushed during delivery.

.-.

"Happy White Day! How was practice? Did you get my package yet? It should've come in today!" Ogiwara's questioned, his voice ringing with excitement.

Kuroko giggled slightly, placing the small cardboard box in front of her. "Yes I just got it right now. You didn't have to get me anything thought."

"Eh? I wanted too! Besides this probably doesn't compare to the chocolates you sent me. They were delicious, especially considering you can't cook beyond boiling eggs."

Ogiwara really was an honest fool. "Stop or I'll hang up."

"No! Alright, you're an awesome cook, now open it!" The brunette wailed; Kuroko could imagine his lips tilting into a pout.

"Alright, I'm opening it now." Kuroko balanced her phone in-between her shoulder and her ear while she carefully opened the box.

Kuroko couldn't help the small breathy gasp as she gently pulled out a glass rose ornament. It was nothing like the glass rose (store bought) she'd seen Midorima carry once as her lucky item, or the ones (professionally) displayed in window shops.

The clear 'stem' wasn't completely straight and the 'leaves' looked like lump triangles. The 'rose' part was open and looked more like crunched paper, but the soft baby blue was clear and sparkled prettily when Kuroko held it up in the sun.

It was the most beautiful thing she'd ever seen.

"…Kuroko? Uh listen I know it looks kinda bad and all and it probably would have been easier if I just bought one but my school has this Glass Crafts Club and I thought it would be cool if I just made one instead! You can send it back and I'll just but one that looks better!"

"I love it. It's so beautiful, i- Th-thank you very much." Kuroko reassured, hoping that her voice didn't choke enough for Ogiwara to notice that she was crying a bit.

"Y-you like it? That's great! Uh you're not crying are you?"

"No I'm not, you did a great job."

"Happy White Day Kuroko. Thanks for everything."

Kuroko was really glad that the brunette couldn't see her face.

"I'm the one who should be thanking you. I'm looking forward to seeing you on the court."

"Yeah, I'll see you on the court. Bye~!"

~.~

Ogiwara can't help but stare at Kuroko, holding her at arm's length. "Whoa…you've really changed!" Eyes taking in his friend's chin length hair and even though she wore a loose Teiko t-shirt he could instantly tell that she had grown.

Kuroko's lips tilted into what he recognized as a (cute, since when…?) pout, "You haven't changed much. You've got rice on your face."

Ogiwara laughed slightly, plucking the rice into his mouth and held his hands up in surrender. "Sorry, I just meant that…well you've gotten…pretty. N-not saying that you looked bad before! Aww crap I couldn't wait for today and now I don't know what to say." He finished lamely, one hand scratching the back of his really warm neck.

To his credit Kuroko didn't laugh at him, she smiled fondly.

"It's fine; I don't really know what to say except that we're going to move up."

Ogiwara nodded, "And we'll meet you there."

~.~

"Teiko's amazing as ever," Mochida commented, watching as reporters shoved and pushed to get a picture of the all-girls starting players.

Ogiwara nodded, his eyes trailing over each of the Miracles before smiling at the last one. "I'll be back, gonna say hi to a friend!"

"Hey Kuro-!" He trailed off and stopped as Kuroko came walked by him. Her eyes, last year so warm and full of pride and promise, were so cold and dark with emptiness. Her eyes bore into the ground in front of her, never once looking up.

~.~

"Excuse me, is Kuroko Tetsuya in there?"

A pink haired, surprisingly good looking, boy stood in front of the double doors and looked at him in surprise. The boy nodded, "Yes she is, but she hasn't woken up yet."

"Who are you?" A voice commanded, leaving no room for disobedience.

He came face to face with a beautiful (Kuroko was prettier, his mind whispered) red haired girl with desolate eyes. Just like Kuroko's when he last saw her. Akashi Seijuro, a chill went down his spine.

"Do you have something for Tetsuya?"

"I'm Ogiwara Shigehiro from Meiko Middle School; I just wanted to see how she was doing."

She regarded him coolly, "Ah our opponents in the finals, unfortunately Tetsuya won't be in the next match. Not that it'll change anything, the results will be the same. Good luck."

Akashi swept past him.

"Wait," He called out, "Do you think basketball is fun?"

.-.

"I want to play in the match." Kuroko demanded.

"No, the doctor ordered that you keep resting." Akashi replied. "Ogiwara left a message."

Kuroko's eyes widened slightly and Akashi was somewhat surprised that the blunette would show that much interest. It had been awhile since Kuroko had shown an emotional interest in something.

"He said 'We'll make sure to play again next time'."

Kuroko clenched the bed sheet in her hands, "Akashi, please go full out."

Momoi winced, "You sure about that?"

"He'd hate it if you didn't play your absolute best. So please play with no reservations."

It truly had been a long time since Kuroko was serious.

"Fine, we'll respect your wishes. However I hope you are aware of the outcome of that kind of match."

Kuroko nodded slowly, "I'm sure."

-.-

Momoi smiled at the screen, "At least our third championship will be a bang."

Kuroko's blood froze at the sight of the match. "No something's wrong. This match is wrong." They wouldn't, Akashi had given her word... Kuroko ran, ignoring Momoi's calls.

She was too late.

Her eyes briefly took in the line of 1s before landing on Ogiwara. The brunette stood frozen in the middle of the court.

"Ogiwara!" Kuroko called out.

He turned, fixing his wide, dark, broken eyes on her.

"…Kuroko…"

Tears began to fall from glassy eyes and Kuroko could feel her own begin to water.

She glanced at her teammates.

They were already walking away, their backs tall and strong and already chattering about their individual weekend plans. As if they hadn't just stomped all over Kuroko's promise. As if they hadn't just destroyed Ogiwara and Meiko down to the very bone.

As if they could call this…game a victory.

It was getting hard for her to breath. Her body already shuddering with the effort of keeping her sobs in, rivers already cascading down her face.

~.~

"Why did you play like that?" Kuroko demanded. Why did you hurt my friend?

Akashi sighed, "I don't see why you're so upset. The match was a success, everyone actually performed better than before."

"That isn't the point."

Akashi's eyes narrowed slightly, a slow smile creeping on her face. "Aren't you being a hypocrite? Where was this protest when we faced the dozens of other teams before Meiko? The only reason you're even saying anything is because we were facing your friend, if our opponent was not Meiko we wouldn't be having this conversation."

"Kurokocchi had a friend on that team? Which one was it?" Kise asked, never once looking up from her phone.

"So what? If we didn't control the game then we would have just kept making points. At least this way wasn't boring." Murasakibara cut in, "Right Mido-chin?'

"Don't drag me into this, how you all play is none of my business." Midorima sniffed, pushing her glasses back into place. "As long as I do my absolute best, I don't care about anything else."

"It's impossible for us to play full strength; it's not our fault that the opponents are weak. How the hell are we supposed to have a game where both sides had fun?" Aomine drawled lazily.

Kuroko flinched, "I don't know. But what happened was unacceptable for me."

…I can't do this anymore.

She can't...

How was she supposed to play basketball now…?

Kuroko can't.

She would quit basketball.

~.~

Voicemail again.

None of her emails or text messages had been responded too either.

It was like Ogiwara had dropped off the face of the Earth, not that Kuroko could blame the brunette for refusing to speak to her. Not after that game.

It wasn't too hard for her to find Meiko's gym, Ogiwara's captain Mochida meet her outside. The raven haired teen looked at her uniform, "You must be Kuroko, Shige always talked about you."

Kuroko nodded her head, "Yes, is Ogiwara here? We need to talk."

The boy sighed, "Sorry, but that last game was pretty hard on us, especially Shige. He transferred to another school."

Kuroko blinked up at him, not quite sure if she'd heard him right.

"He said he was gonna quit basketball too." Her eyes widened in shock, Ogiwara loved basketball. He couldn't just stop. Kuroko didn't even get the chance to apologize-

"Like I said that game was hard on all of use, especially Shige since he loved basketball the most on our team." He paused and he locked his gaze with hers.

"But I don't want you to quite basketball."

"Why…?"

"Because you're like us, like the people who've been crushed. Even though you're on the winning team, it's like you feel the same despair. Shige believes in you, so I will too."

Mochida reached into his pocket, "He left this in his locker." Kuroko carefully took the black wristband, the same one he'd worn when they reunited the year before. The same one she'd given him just before they separated for their separate middle schools.

She clenched it tightly, "Thank you."

~.~

Kagami glanced at Kuroko, watching her snap on her customary black wrist band. Her gaze locked on the other side of the court, Rakuzan and Akashi waiting.

"Is that the one from him?"

She nodded, her fingers brushing its worn fabric.

Hyuga gave the call for the starters to meet on the court.

~.~

"Nervous?" Kagami guessed, nudging the exhausted bluenette's arm gently. "I thought you wanted to talk to him."

Kuroko leaned on him, "I do, he had a basketball and he looked happy. But what if he still…?"

The red head rolled his eyes and clamped his hand on Kuroko's head, gently ruffling her hair. "Idiot, we went over this yesterday. He doesn't blame you I promise. And if I'm wrong then I'll go out there and punch him in the face. Quite beating around the bush, go." Kagami ordered, face burning red as Izuki and Koganei snickered about how protective the red head was.

Kuroko really was blessed to have met Kagami Taiga.

Ogiwara was waiting for her outside the stadium.

The two stared at each other in silence, how many times had Kuroko dreamed of getting the chance to talk to Ogiwara over the past year? And now that he stood in front of her, Kuroko didn't know what to say.

Ogiwara rubbed the back of his neck, "Congrats on the win, your team was great." He began awkwardly, what was he supposed to say to his best friend that he'd ignored for a year?

Kuroko smiled lightly, "Thank you, i-I'm glad you came to watch, I would have given up before it was over if it wasn't for you. Are you playing again?"

Ogiwara grinned and held up a basketball, looking every bit as happy as he was when they were children and still learning how to dribble properly. Her heart raced at the sight, it had been so long since she saw the brunette look so happy.

"Yeah, I even joined my schools team. Maybe we'll play next year?"

Kuroko could have cried, "Yes, next year."

Ogiwara's grin grew wider, "I should get going," He jerked his head to a point behind her. "You should too; you got a team to celebrate with."

Kuroko glanced behind her where Seirin waited; everyone had turned away when they noticed her looking back. As if they hadn't been watching the pair. Except Kagami, he just waved.

"I'll call you later okay? We can meet up and talk more then."

Kuroko nodded, "Okay."

Once the brunette had disappeared into the crowd, Kuroko released the breath she didn't realize she was holding in.

"Considering I didn't have to hit anyone, I'm guessing that went well. Told you that you didn't have to be nervous." Kagami boasted, grinning wide as she drifted back to Seirin.

~oOo~

Harasawa looked at the regulars lined up in front of him. After a week-long of exams, it was time for the moment of truth. The regulars stared anxiously at the slip of paper in his hands; he wasn't looking forward to the faces some of the regulars would make once they received their results.

"Relax Dai-chan I'm sure you did your best." Momoi comforted, squeezing his friends hand gently. For once not badgering the dark skinned girl about her (nonexistent) love life like he'd been doing for the past week.

Harasawa handed the paper to Wakamatsu and the team instantly flocked to the captain's side. Predictably Momoi had the highest scores out of everyone followed closely by Sakurai. Some of the bench warmers had groaned about having to take remedial classes while others cried in happiness over barely being able to pass.

Aomine and Wakamatsu were oddly silent.

"…There's no way you could score that high." The blond teen muttered in disbelief.

"Read it and weep idiot! I passed!" She grinned widely, "I even scored higher than you."

Wakamatsu growled, "You beat me by a few points! Don't get so excited!"

"A few more points than you! Ha I knew I was smarter than you, Imayoshi owes me 2851 yen (approximately $25)!" Momoi steeped in between them before either one could get closer, taking the paper from the captain's hands.

"This is defiantly the highest you have ever scored Dai-chan, those study sessions with Imayoshi really did you good." He added the last part slyly, not that Dai-chan was listening to him anyway.

Aomine snatched the paper from his hands and almost ran out the gym doors. "I'll be right back! I got a bet to win!"

"Dai-chan where are you going!?"

~.~

"Shouldn't you be studying instead of staring at the clock?" Susa commented, not bothering to take his eyes off his notes. He could feel Imayoshi pouting at him, "I'm just taking a break, you really are a slave driver aren't you?" Susa rolled his eyes at the typical comment, "Don't blame me when you score lower at the aptitude test."

Imayoshi chuckled, "But I won't, both of us know that, regardless if I put all my effort into studying."

"The rest of us normal people hate that part about you."

"I know~" The raven haired teen replied happily. "It's my best quality-"

There was a loud bang as the doors flew open a black and blue blur raced towards their table.

Aomine, grin stretched wider than Imayoshi or Susa had ever seen slammed a paper in between the two boys.

"I passed! I even scored higher than Wakamatsu, read it and weep!"

Susa groaned, "We're gonna get banned."

The raven haired teen picked up the paper, ignoring the other's grumbling. "Impressive Aomine, your study efforts paid off. We should celebrate, instead of paying you 2851 yen, how about I buy dinner instead?"

Aomine shrugged, the grin still present on her face. "Sure, but I need to go home after practice."

"That's fine, text me when you're ready and I could meet you at our usual place or I could pick you up."

Susa stared between the two.

"Pick me up so you can see the new shoes that came in."

Imayoshi nodded, "Alright, it's a date~"

The blunette snorted slightly, "Yeah, sure, whatever you wanna call it. See ya later. Bye Susa." Then as fast as she came in, she swept out of the library.

Imayoshi hummed and turned back to his studies. Susa stared deadpanned. "…Did you just…get a date? With Aomine of all people?"

Imayoshi smirked, "Did I? Aomine and I have had plenty of dinner outings before now."

"Once again, this is why everyone hates you."

"Susa you're so cruel to me~!"

It might be awhile before the next chapter, finials are coming soon.
