So anyone who follows me (webuiltthepyramids) or Roxanne (untiltheveryend) on Tumblr knows that we have been writing a TON of Wega drabbles in response to prompts we've been sent (mostly by each other but shoutout to you other wonderful people that have sent me stuff!) from a list we reblogged. I was sent "you're the only one I trust to do this" and kinda really liked the idea I came up with it for it and decided to turn it into a multi-chapter fic.

This doesn't take place in the same timeline as If I Can Leave Off Burying The White – think of this story as being set in a world where Vega is shot, but she makes it and returns to work in a limited capacity after a couple of weeks. This first chapter is a slightly more detailed version of the drabble posted on Tumblr, and will continue forward from there.

Happy Wega Wednesday!

Vega stood behind him for several minutes by the time she got up the courage to speak, and even then, her voice didn't hold the same clear, get-it-done tone that she tended to strive for in the work place.

"Hey Wylie?"

He spun around in his chair, his face instantly lighting up with that smile that she somehow knew he saved for her. "What's up?"

"I…" her hands went to her stomach, and she forced them back down to her sides. If she peeled off another bandage, her doctor was probably going to start charging her extra. "You need a new nervous hobby," he had told her the last time she was in.

Vega cleared her throat, looking at Wylie. "I have something to ask you."

"Shoot."

She wrung her hands, glancing around to make sure no one else was listening. They were the only ones in the bullpen. She still wasn't sure this was a question that she could ask him...but if she didn't ask him, he couldn't say yes, and she needed him to say yes because otherwise she couldn't go. But his expression and tone of voice showed he clearly didn't have any idea of the magnitude of what she was going to say. "You know that since I've left the hospital, I still get tired really easy. And I'm not totally healed, since I'm restricted to desk work for several more weeks, so…" she trailed off. "The anniversary of my father's death is coming up."

"I'm sorry. Is there anything I can do? I don't know, like…well, anything?"

"Actually…" she rubbed the toe of her shoe against the floor. "I usually fly to Florida…to visit his grave. But I can't make the trip by myself this year…I'm not strong enough..." she was looking down at the ground, struggling to not tug at her bandages through her shirt, and as she lifted her eyes to meet Wylie's she blurted it out. "Will you take me?"

He blinked. "Of course."

"Really?"

"Yeah."

"It's a really private thing for me," she said quietly, hoping he understood how hard it was for her to ask him. "But…but I need to go. And I'm not well enough to do it alone and it'd just be for a couple of days on a weekend and…" she put a hand up to her face to shield her tears from him, her voice cracking. "And you're the only one I trust to do this."

"Hey, Michelle, hey." Wylie got up, closing the distance between them and pulling her into his arms. "Of course I'll take you. Of course."

"Really?" she repeated as he rocked her.

"Yes," he said firmly. "When do you want to go?"

She stepped back and looked up at him. "There's a cheap flight Friday night. Saturday is when I'd go to the cemetery."

"I'll be there." He was nodding. "We should probably get back to work before Cho walks in here."

He understood. She smiled. "Thank you."

As she finished up her day's work, Vega tried without much success to push down her conflicting emotions. On one hand, she hated being vulnerable and she'd been practically naked around them in the days after the shooting; with doctors and nurses getting updates to them almost before they told her what was going on. But she was overwhelmed - overwhelmed at how quickly and easily he'd said yes. Overwhelmed with relief that she would not break her tradition of spending the day with her father. Overwhelmed at how lucky she was that Wylie had come into her life.

This is moreso going to be a Vega fic than a Wega fic. Vega's past, Vega's continued emotional healing over her father's death as well as her healing from her injury. But there'll be Wega in there, for sure.
