Chapter 1
Éclair Restaurant is one of most famous and elite five star restaurants in the world, with its main building stationed in France; it has many branches in the major cities around the world. In Japan, Éclair restaurant has two branches in the Kanto region, the bigger branched is located in central Tokyo and the smaller branched is sits in Chiba.
In the Chiba branch is where a vibrant and innocent yet clumsy protagonist of our story is working as part timer, Yuya Shiina. Working enthusiastically with a warm smile on her face as she greets customers and talks to other staff members, though little did they know that this cheerful young lady was in the middle of fighting her shattered body. Her usual schedule for the month now consists of working 16 hours a day and sometimes up to 5 hours of night shifts alongside her day shift. As she tries to stop her body from collapsing with a headstrong and stubborn mind she continues to work professionally, however her close colleagues begins to notice the fatigue in her.
"H-hey little Miss! How about going for a break huh?" said a middle age man with brown ponytail hair, a well shaved face and hazel worried eyes, with frowning eyebrows that emphasised his forehead wrinkles. This man was in the bar serving several stressed out men in suits, that which all the lunch time staff would always conclude that these men have either been fired or promoted and so were mere minutes away before proceeding to the Plaza, known to the staff as the "Chuchoter Avec Plaisir" (Whispers of Pleasure).
"Eh?! ... Ah, I'm alright Henry-san, honto!" replied Yuya carrying an empty tray in her left hand, smiling at an even more worried Henry and before he could speak she interrupted him noticing the lifeless men.
"Ah, soka! What's the bet for today?" she asked trying to desperately divert Henry's attention to the men instead of her. The natural blonde had her hair plated and then placed in a high ponytail with her fringe almost covering her tired emerald eyes hidden behind thick rimmed round librarian spectacles. Why she wore that particular type of glasses was something beyond henry's comprehension. Along with outfit she wore long sleeved white shirt with the restaurants logo tucked under black trousers paired with black plain loafers.
"Alright but after your shift promise to take a break alright?!" replied Henry taking an order from one of the salary men*.
"Okay I promise... so come on what's the bet this time, I'm feeling lucky today" she winks before turning round to place her tray on of the tables collecting the plates and cutlery.
"Hmm, I'll have to ask Megumi, I think their betting right no-"
"Nane?" Yuya interrupted as she quickly placed the filled tray on the bar table.
"H-hey wait up Megumi-san, hedoi Megumi-san" running towards the staff room almost out of breath and opening the door.
"Ah, Yuya-chan you made it!...eh...Yu-yuya-chan...are you alright?" Megumi asks with a worried face, but is suddenly surprised when Yuya slumps on the floor outbreath and grabbing onto Megumi's leg for dear life. "I-I'm fine…but that…you're so me…mean Megumi-san…wait for me." On the other hand the other staff members witnessing the ordeal were thinking of the cuteness of the young girl whilst others thought how good it was to be young again.
"Mataku, whoever told you we were starting without you!" Megumi exclaimed as she pinched Yuya's cheeks and heaving the girl up from the floor.
"Eh?! Honto?" Yuya says inhaling a deep breath and gulping as sip of the water that was handed to her by another staff member.
"Ah, seriously, so childish you're like a lost puppy" Megumi now patting her head gently "Hai, hai, so hayaku, we don't have all day it's almost time for the end of our shift."
"Hai!" Yuya yells enthusiastically punching the air.
As the door opened the man sees a group of staff workers gathered around a circular table placing bets as if they were inside a casino. With an annoyed look he was about to scold the fools however he sees an even more incompetent fool spying the 'particular' men from the bar and reporting back to the table the information he has gathered.
"Mon dieu" whispered Henry to himself smacking his head just as when Yuya noticed him.
"Ah, Henry-san why don't you join us. Megumi-san just bet that the man with a bald patch on his head will be going first and I bet that the man with the beard will go first I bet my cheese cake for Megumi-san's hagendaz ice-cream then for the second round I bet the chocolate cake that I found earlier and..." Yuya says hardly taking any breaths, but Henry stopped listening to her halfway as he thought that once she starts off it's a little difficult of her to stop. It is known as one of her side effects when she lacks sleeps.
Yuya continued to ramble on without consciously knowing herself that she's rambling on and on "...and then and then for the 4th round I bet the apple pie which I also found along with the chocolate cake, though I think it might be tiramisu rather than a cheese cake it did somewhat smell vaguely of wine, but anyways see Henry-san I told you I was feeling lucky today, anyways for the-". However at that moment one thought passed through Henry's mind- tiramisu cake!
"EHHHHH?!" Henry yells to the top of his voice as the thought sunk in.
"Yu-YUYAAA!" he angrily says holding onto Yuya's head successfully turning her head so that she was facing him.
"H-hai?" Yuya replies innocently batting her eyelashes.
"Don't "h-hai" me, what did you do with the cake?!" he says drilling Yuya's forehead with his knuckles.
"W-wait a minute Henry-san, calm down first of all…see funny story-" Yuya began faking an innocent smile but as she looked at Henry what she saw immediately made her drop her act.
"Okay let me explain, but first let go of my head Henry-san. Alright…see I didn't know it belonged to you Henry-san I mean I thought it was the cake that I won during the raffle draw since they said we'd be getting our prizes this week. I'm really sorry Henry-san you can have it back I can just withdraw from the fourth betting." Yuya explained sombrely as she handed the cake back to Henry. But seeing her pitiable appearance Henry couldn't bear to take it from and instead exclaimed "Fine! Then that means when you win I get half the share."
Henry states backing down and stated to the staff in a serious manner "Listen up! A valuable customer will be coming today and should a member of that family ask for the regular order of tiramisu cake and a bottle of sake. Tell them we haven't ordered a tiramisu cake as the regular pâtissier is close for the week. Understood?"
"Wait! If that's the case then please Henry-san you must have it back I insist, it's for the customer" said Yuya hurriedly, as she began to worry. But Henry refused insisting that it will good for the customer to cut down on alcohol and there was nothing to worry about as Henry personally knew the customer.
After the commotion in the staffroom with the bets settled, everyone went on their own way finishing their shifts and the others back to work with great patience as they waited for the results. Yuya on the other hand was busy greeting and serving the customers, smiling happily whilst bearing the fatigue in her body. Megumi was busy cleaning the tables and going back and forth from the second floor and back down to the first floor again.
Henry also went back to the bar serving drinks and taking the orders when the Manager approached him. The Manager was in his early 40s with auburn coloured hair in a long ponytail and sky blue eyes that seems to be filled with mystery. Although all the staff knows him to be somewhat doting and childish for a manager, because no matter how serious he may try to look it always ends up comically. The manager is also known to care a lot about the restaurant, its customers and especially the workers whatever their status.
"Henry..." calls the manager
"Manager...?" answers Henry turning his head to face him.
"We have just received a call that the Mibu family is on their way here. Please prepare the table for them" he says kindly.
"Yes, sir" replies Henry.
"Oh and Henry, it would seem we are going to need some more...sakes, plenty more" he says looking at anywhere but Henry.
"More? There's a whole barrel left ... I'm afraid were out of them that was the last barrel for today. I ordered last night and they said it won't be delivered till tomorrow afternoon" heaving a sigh Henry continued on drying the glasses and explained calmly to the manager.
"I see...Hmm that is quite problematic" the manager says whilst trying to think and looking around at the bar for any alcohol drink that might substitute for sake.
"Umm sir is it really necessary... I mean doesn't he justnormally drink about half a barrel?" interrupted Henry setting a clean glass on the bar table.
"Yes, that is the usual, but I have just been informed he didn't have such a brilliant day today. Well it ever rarely is a good day for him but today in particular, well this is just between you and me, but it seems the lotus flower is back" said the manager in whispers for Henry's ears only with worried look on his face "I can only hope that nothing will happen today to spur his temper".
"Hmm that is a problem and today isn't exactly a quiet day for our restaurant. We've got five different celebrations going on so the restaurant will be full and to make matters worse one of the celebration is the engagement party of the heir of the Tokugawa clan and I heard a few relatives of the that certain clan is attending. Of course I made sure to sure place them on separate floor. But because there are over 100 attendees I have placed them on the second floor as the ground floor will be occupied by the Taishirou clan and the first floor cannot hold over 100 guests" Henry sighed feeling a headache coming, this was probably the most stressful day of his life ever since he started working at Éclair 5 years ago.
"Well this is truly problematic; his favourite place is the second floor! Oh no what do we Henry-san! S-should I just call Muramasa-sama and tell him about the situation I'm sure he can understand, he has always been understanding. Oh but I'm sure they would feel as if the restaurant does not value them enough that we had to ask them in particular to cancel today's reservation but then the Tokugawa clan-Oh this is a disaster what do I do Henry-san! This restaurant is known for its excellent service and high standards as well as exquisite cuisine including first class drinks and it's only a matter of minutes before they arrive and of course Muramasa-sama is one of the most esteemed patron of this branch!" the manager started heaving after bursting and clutched onto Henry's arm for dear life sporting a petrified look on his face.
"C-calm down Manager!" Henry began and collected the manager in his arms then pulled him at arm's length "Take a deep breath. I'll deal with Muramasa-sama when they get here it's too late tell them now they'll be here any minute. I'm sure he'll understand and besides he might not even show up with them this time, think about it for the last 2 months he hasn't been coming along with them and even more so that lotus flower is back. Doesn't he normally leave town when he's in an incredibly pissed mood?! So relax manager we can deal with this!"
With the two men deep in thought staring at each other and wearing equally worried faces, they failed to notice a confused Yuya standing in front of the bar wanting to take an order but didn't know at which point of their conversation to interrupt. So she ended up listening to the whole conversation unintentionally until she could find a moment to stop them.
"Anu..." she quietly says getting the attention of both men now staring at her and clearing her throat placed her order before profusely apologizing for unintentionally hearing some of their conversation and swore never to tell anyone of what she hear. Then as Henry and the manager were reassuring her that it was fine it her, Yuya had a way to solve one of their problem. She might not be able to solve all of them but at least there was something she could do as she thought "I know a great place that has the best sake ever and it's not that far from here actually about 10 minutes away, 5 if I run it."
"Ah, anu, Manager-san" she interupted gaining the two'attention. "Well, you said you needed sakes right? Well I know a great place that has sakes-oh don't worry it's the best sake ever...and well I was wondering if it would help I mean I can go to that place and ask- I mean buy a barrel if it's alright...I mean you don't have to...see I was just wondering if I could help and then I had this idea, but it's alright if it seems-oh but I know the owner you see, jii-san only makes homemade sake that's been passed down for generation..so umm I figured…" her voice faded as she waited for the verdict of the two.
"Alright Yuya-san" the manager replied at length and instructed Yuya to take Megumi and drive to the place to order the sake.
"Eh?" Yuya exclaimed looking up to the manager in surprise.
"You can buy those sakes you were talking about" he smiles at her feeling strangely more relieved than earlier.
Yuya in her surprise walked up to the manager "Re-really? I mean are you sure Manager-san? I mean I know I was the one that suggested it but this isn't just some ordinary restaurant, I mean-"
"Well those sakes aren't just ordinary sakes right? It will be fine I trust your judgments Yuya-san" interrupted the manager as he noticed Yuya was about to ramble on again.
"Ye-yes of course yes I'll go right now I mean it's not that far probably about 10 minutes tops I can just run but I think it would be best take Megumi and the van" she spoke enthusiastically as she began to clean her hands with her apron and raced to find Megumi.
The manager chuckled and shouts "Alright! We will try and divert them for as long as we can until you arrive. I'm counting on you Yuya-san"
"I won't let you down manager-san" pumping her fist up in the air she reached the staff room all the while shouting Megumi's name.
A moment later the manager and Henry were laughing at the site of Yuya dragging a confused Megumi in her left hand whilst buttoning her coat on her right hand. Although that uneasiness still crept inside of them of what will happen today as they could only hope the best.
