Suddenly, Maura feels like her head is spinning. She wonders if she is in some treacherous nightmare. She begins down the rabbit hole, but the sound of Jane's voice brings her back into reality.

"Maura."

"Jane I am not understanding what is going on here."

"It is incredibly complicated," she begins.

Maura reaches out, and takes her hand, "Okay," she notes the IV in her opposite hand.

"Korsak is the only one who knows. I didn't tell him all the details."

"I am listening."

"I'm scared," she admits, with tears in her eyes.

"That's okay."

"Maura, you don't understand. This isn't how this was supposed to go. None of this is right," the tears do not remain contained.

"Jane, I know that this is scary, but I need you to talk me through what is going on right now. I am in the dark."

"The baby," she blubbers.

"What baby? Jane, what are you talking about?"

Jane pulls down the covers, which were previously tucked under her chin.

Her hand moves her abdomen, "This baby."

Maura swallows hard, and does her best to keep her non-verbals neutral.

"Jane, how long have you known about this?"

"Months," her nostrils flare.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I didn't know how to tell you, or anyone," the tears sting her cheeks.

Maura reaches for the box of tissues on the bedside stand, and hands them to her.

"That's okay," Maura says in a soothing tone.

"It's not okay. None of this is okay. Maura it is too early. I don't want it to go like this. I never wanted this in the first place. I don't want it at all, but that doesn't mean that I want something to go wrong."

"Jane, you're rambling."

"The baby is not due for another six weeks. What if it doesn't have enough surfactant?"

"Jane calm down."

"It's too late for them to do anything. I waited too long. I thought I was just dehydrated, so I drank more water. The cramping didn't stop, and it got worse, and now it is too late. They can't make it stop now."

"Jane how long have you been in labor?"

"A few hours," she admits.

"I am sure that they will have plenty of time to stop the contractions."

Jane shakes her head, "You don't understand, Maura. I am already dilated eight centimeters."

"Oh."

"They are going to want to put the baby on my chest. I don't want that. Just let them take it. I can't…"

"Jane, why didn't you tell me the extent of what happened?"

"It made me feel weak."

Maura wipes tears from Jane's face with a tissue, "You are the strongest person that I know."

"I need you to go with the baby. Stay with the baby. There can't be any paper trail."

"Jane, what are you talking about?"

"He can never know where this baby went. He will track it down."

"Jane he is in federal detention."

She shakes her head, "That won't stop him."

"You can stop him."

"Promise me that you will stay with the baby. Do not let it out of your sight for a second."

"I promise. Jane should we call anyone else?"

She shakes her head, "No one else can ever know."
Within an hour the room is filled with medical staff. Jane writhes in pain with every single contraction, without an epidural. Maura watches at the bed is transformed. She feels her hand being squeezed, as Jane pushes. Jane's face is beet red, and her face is covered in sweat. Her dark hair is secured in a ponytail. Maura expects the delivery process to be rather lengthy. By the second push she can see the baby's entire head. By the third push she can see shoulders. The OB/GYN grabs the shoulders, and the nurse quickly suctions the baby's mouth. The newly born baby is grey. After a second round of suctioning the newborn begins to turn pink, and then red, as it lets out a shout. Jane's attention is shifted to the crying baby that the doctor is holding in his hands.

"Welcome to the world, little boy," the nurse greets.

"Give him to me," Jane utters.

Maura watches as they place the baby onto her chest. The nurse continues to simulate the baby's breathing, as he rests on Jane's chest. They whisk the slimy baby over to the incubator. Maura suddenly finds herself snipping an umbilical cord. The baby is measured, weighed, and vital signs are checked. The baby continues to wail the entire time. After assessing him, the nurse slaps on an ID bracelet, and bundles him up. She returns to Jane's bedside. She presents the squealing newborn to her. Jane reaches for him, and the nurse carefully situates her into her arms.

"Hello," she greets. The newborn stops crying, and begins searching for the sound of Jane's voice.

Soon the staff has left, and it is only Maura, Jane, and the baby left in the room. Maura looks over at Jane.

"Talk to me. Jane what do you want to do?"

"Maura, I can't do this. I don't want to turn him into a monster. I don't want to be responsible for another monster running around in this world."

"What are you saying?"

"I can't keep him."

She nearly falls off the couch, when she is awakened by the sound of someone pounding on her door. She saunters to the door, and pulls it open. She finds Maura standing on the other side. Maura enters the apartment. Jane looks disheveled, and disoriented. She looks as if she is on the verge of tears.

"Are you ready to go?" Maura questions.

"I'm sorry, I just woke up."

"I am not in a hurry," Maura reassures her.

"Maura have a seat," Jane insists.

"Okay," Maura agrees.
