Luke

Luke was starting to become concerned that something was wrong. He hadn't felt pain since a little before school started. And it was now December

Not that Luke was complaining, it was just pretty weird. He had gone through the entire football season and taken some massive hits. And he had never felt a thing, not even a mark had been left. He was almost willing to start intentionally hurting himself to figure out what was going on.

He hadn't quite gotten to that point yet though.

Luke got out of bed at 7:00 as usual. He looked around his room. Basically the same it had been all year. Well, except the football gear had been replaced with a basketball jersey.

He started dressing himself. Left leg followed by right leg. Pulled his t-shirt over his head. Life kind of just seemed like one large boring routine.

"Luke, Lucy; it's time to get up for school." He heard his mom's familiar call from downstairs.

"Coming." Luke yelled back.

He stepped outside of his room to see the door to his little sister's room still closed. That was weird for Luke. His sister was always ready before he was.

He walked into the dining room to see his mom, dad, and pancakes. A familiar scene with one thing missing, his sister.

"Is your sister okay." His mom asked.

"I don't know." Luke responded.

His mom and dad got up from their seats at the table and started walking towards his sister's room. They opened the door to see Lucy lying in her bed coughing and sneezing.

"Mom, Dad, I think I'm sick." Lucy croaked.

"It's okay, sweetie, you stay in bed." Her mom felt Lucy's head. "I'll bring you some soup in a little bit okay."

"Okay." Lucy said.

Luke's dad looked at him, his face as serious as always.

"Luke, you should probably get heading to school before you're late."

"Alright, goodbye, guys." Luke wasn't really paying much attention anymore.

He started to walk away thinking about how life was so repetitive. Luke was longing for something more fulfilling.

Walking out the front door, he noticed how dreary today looked. There were so many clouds in the sky, the sun hadn't come out yet. He opened the door to his 2004 BMW, really glad his parents had gotten him a car for his 17th birthday. Especially one this fast.

Driving down the road he felt pretty comfortable. He was alone with his thoughts. No one could tell him what to do while he was here.

As if to prove him wrong, his phone started vibrating in his pocket. He stopped at a traffic light and pulled it out to see what had come up.

Kat: Hey babe, i missed the bus this morning could you give me a ride to school? Pleeeeaase

Luke smiled, yeah he could probably give his girlfriend a ride. Or at least he thought he could until he looked at the time. He had like 6 minutes to go and pick her up and then get to the school. The road was kind of empty right now. He thought about it. If he drove a little bit over the speed limit he could probably make it.

Luke: yeah ill be there in a lil bit.

Luke looked up at the traffic light. It was still red. Come on hurry up. Luke started tapping on his wheel, getting really impatient.

A car pulled up next to him. Luke could hear it was something loud. He didn't really care who it was, he was in a hurry. He looked to his right just out of curiosity and saw that it was an old firebird. It was being driven by one of the punk asses of the school. Luke thought his name was something weird, it was Ponyboy, maybe. He didn't have any problems with him, after all he tried to get along with pretty much everybody, even if they did live different lifestyles.

Although, there was somebody Luke didn't like sitting in the passenger seat of the car. The guy next to Ponyboy was Johnny, Kat's ex-boyfriend. Luke and him had never really talked to each other but it still bothered him at least a little, (even though he'd never admit it), that his oh so perfect girl had dated this permafried hippie. He really hoped that they didn't want to talk to him for some reason.

Ponyboy rolled down his window, looking at Luke. And judging from the movement of his mouth Luke guessed that he wanted something. Against his better judgement Luke rolled down his passenger side window.

"Yo, pretty boy." Ponyboy taunted him. "Think your daddy's beamer could stand up against some real muscle."

The Firebird revved. Admittedly it sounded a little intimidating. The two of the morons laughed and Luke started feeling a little heated. He was planning on driving a little recklessly this morning anyways, it was a two lane road, decent spot for a race. Besides, what better way to show up Johnny and his friend's then to whoop them at their own challenge.

Luke revved the M3's engine hoping that it would sound at least a little menacing. He knew it was fast even if it wasn't super loud. One thing Luke loved about newer cars. Luke looked over at Ponyboy and smiled.

"From here to the school, see ya there." Ponyboy stated while Luke was rolling up his window.

The light turned green and the two of them sped off. The two of them held it neck and neck for almost a mile but Luke started pulling ahead inch by inch. He started feeling a little bit of glee. His car was faster, even if just barely. He was shifting through the gears as if he was a racecar driver. He could see the hood of Ponyboy's car in his peripheral vision which only gave him more incentive to drive faster. He knew that he couldn't win, the race ended at school and Luke still had to pick up Kat. He was hoping to prove a point by gaining a lead before turning away from the race to pick her up. He didn't think he had enough of a lead to humiliate the two of them properly.

Trees were flying by extremely fast. Luke took a short glance at the speedometer, 99 mph. Luke was starting to feel a little nervous. They were about a minute or two from Kat's house when luck came Luke's direction. In the right lane of the road a minivan was coming up. The two of them were still neck and neck, but the vehicle was going to be in Ponyboy's way, he would have to slow down. Ponyboy did something Luke didn't expect however. The Firebird shifted gears and started hauling down the road even faster, even starting to pull an inch or two ahead of the M3. Luke wasn't sure what Ponyboy was planning but he wasn't losing this. He put his foot all the way to the floor. No more pussying around. Right when Luke started to realign the hoods of the cars, Ponyboy became even more reckless. He started turning into Luke's lane slowly. Luke glanced over at him and Ponyboy wasn't even looking in his direction, his focus was on the road and the quickly approaching minivan.

The Firebird was about an inch from Luke's car and still getting closer before Luke gave up and hit the brakes. Ponyboy was obviously stupid enough to hit either him or whoever was in that minivan. The car pulled completely in front of Luke and kept widening the gap.

Luke was going about 100 when he realized that the turn to Kat's neighborhood was coming up. He immediately got the brake pedal to the floor to start slowing down and ended up drifting into the neighborhood at about 50 miles an hour. Narrowly missed crashing into a car and then again into a mailbox before finishing the descent to the speed limit of 25.

He pulled into Kat's driveway to see her standing there with her head in her hands. She did not seem to be very impressed by his entry.

Samantha

Samantha was sitting in the back of her English class texting, not at all paying attention to the professor drone on about the importance of the Canterbury Tales. She had been having a bad day at home and her parents wouldn't leave her alone with the texts.

Her parents were once again using her as a tool to "win" the divorce they had just gone through. First her mom bought her a brand new Iphone, then her dad had to go out to buy her a new car. The entire time asking who she liked better.

Dad: Hey, I was thinking you and I could go into the city and get dinner at Reggie's.

Reggie's was a pretty nice italian restaurant. It wasn't a place you just casually went to.

Samantha decided to ignore the text, She was just too sick of it to care anymore. She needed something else to think about, anything. Professor Kelly was going on about math, clearly not about to offer anything interesting.

She looked at Mason. He was quickly starting to become known as one of the most social guys in Brookeville. It seemed everyone loved him, even the emos. She would assume that he had dirt on just about everybody.

They hadn't talked a whole lot since homecoming but Samantha was hoping to change that. She wanted to know the secrets inside of his head. If only she could get him interested in her.

She just wanted him to look at her. Give some kind of hint that he was attracted to her.

Strangely his head snapped up from his paper and he looked back towards her. His eyes sparkled just below his curly brown hair. He smirked at her for just a second before looking down at his paper again.

Did he do that because I wanted him to. No that would be impossible. But this hadn't been the first occurence like this. Just the other day her mother and father had been arguing, bad. With just the hope that peace would befall them, shortly after her parents had both been apologizing profusely. It seemed she had control over people's emotions. She just needed to test it.

She scanned the classroom and found some easy targets. She took notice of Ponyboy texting in the back of class laughing quietly. She willed Mr. Kelly to get furious with him. If a teacher lost it that would be enough proof that something not right was going on.

"Tate, I am so tired of you treating this class like a fucking joke." Mr. Kelly yelled at him seemingly from nowhere. Holy shit. "Seriously if you don't want to be here, leave. You're probably gonna fail this class anyways. So why don't you leave and go live the lowlife way you were so clearly meant for."

Samantha was so focused on what she had done she didn't even notice Mason staring at her when everyone else looked between Mr. Kelly and Ponyboy. Samantha tested her control even further now focusing on Ponyboy. She hoped he would laugh, to be entertained with the teachers opinion of him. A laugh after a ridicule like that, something's up.

"Alright, I'll leave." He seemed as ready to crack a joke as always. "But I'm taking your wife with me."

Ponyboy slowly started walking towards the door.

Mr. Kelly seemed very confused about what was happening. He appeared much less angry than he had a second ago. "Goodbye." Was all he managed to say to Ponyboy as he left.

Samantha's hand shot up into the air. She had to get outta there.

Mr Kelly regained some of his bearings. "Yes, Samantha?"

"May I go to the bathroom?" She squeaked.

"Yeah. Sure." He sat down at his desk. Everybody else settle down and get back to work.

As soon as Samantha was out the door she ran to the bathroom went to a stall and started to have a small panic attack. She had a superpower

One that could potentially destroy Kat.
