Author's Note: Zhurrick Week, day 4: dancing (My day 3 entry was more of a headcanon)
Disclaimer: I don't own Legend of Korra or its characters. I am not looking to make a profit off of this.
Zhu Li didn't dance, except when Varrick convinced her to.
Like that one time in prison, when the guards listened to the radio to stave off their boredom. He had leaped off his chair, cutting a brainstorming session short. His eyes had lit up and he had pulled her to her feet. "I love this song!" he had exclaimed, starting to dance erratically. Ignoring her attempts to explain that she wasn't one to dance very often, he had swung her arms around until she was reluctantly sidestepping with him. They had continued to move like that, Varrick bouncing around with lots of energy and Zhu Li trying to keep up until the song changed. Her boss stopped moving, staring at her with a quizzical expression on his face. "I've got to teach you how to move!"
Or like that time in Zaofu, when Varrick decided that it was time to become a student of Suyin's in dance. She had merely raised an eyebrow when he broke the news, so excited after seeing Bei Fong's troupe perform. "It's so amazing, Zhu Li! You've got to do the thing with me!" he had cried, dragging her by the arm down to the studio. Suyin had taken one look at them and asked why they were there, and Varrick's explanation seemed more than acceptable to the master earthbender. Their first lesson had ended with Zhu Li and Varrick lying on the ground, their limbs tangled together. While he had laughed, she had merely tried to ignore the pain in her elbow. "We'll teach you how to move yet, Zhu Li!"
Their wedding had been a rare time when Zhu Li had actually been excited to dance. It had been her idea to ask the band to play the song they had been listening to their first time they danced together for their first dance as a married couple. As they swayed across the dance floor, eyes only for each other, Zhu Li smirked at her husband. When he asked her why she looked so smug, she immediately replied. "You've finally got me moving properly on the dance floor." He laughed in response.
At the wedding of Bolin and Opal Bei Fong, the groom requested a dance from Zhu Li while the bride was energetically swung around by her twin younger brothers. Zhu Li smiled politely and declined, saying "Sorry, I don't dance," and leaned her head on her husband's shoulder. Later that evening, Bolin had the biggest expression of shock on his face as he watched Varrick and Zhu Li dance energetically to the upbeat music, joyful expressions on their faces. Zhu Li focused on her husband, though, ignoring everyone else.
Upon returning home late at night, Zhu Li carefully stepped out of the dress she had worn to the wedding and was about to slip on a nightgown when Varrick wrapped his arms around her waist from behind. They had their own private dance that night, one that lasted until the sun's morning rays touched the horizon.
Zhu Li would dance now, but only for her husband.
