"Uuuuugh" Elphaba groaned for about the hundredth time that morning.
"I know, I know," Glinda tried to comfort her.
Elphaba was sick. Not just a little sick, she was really sick. She could only thank Ozness that it was winter break and she wasn't missing any classes.
"I hate being sick!" Elphaba exclaimed (also for the hundredth time)
Glinda reappeared with a cup of tea. "I know, Elphie. Here, drink this. It'll help." Glinda helped Elphie to a sort-of-sitting position, and handed her the warm mug.
"Thanks," Elphaba replied, trying her very best to smile. Glinda was an Oz-send. She'd been helping take care of Elphie for the past two days whilst trying to break Elphaba's ridiculous fever, which was rivaling Elphie in terms of stubbornness. Glinda was doing what she could to make sure Elphie was hydrated and not too miserable, but Glinda had found out the hard way that Elphie could be a terrible patient, as well as impatient with whatever bug she'd caught.
Elphaba sipped at the tea Glinda had brought her, and wrapped her blankets even more tightly around her. She hated being sick. It was the absolute worst thing ever, in the green woman's opinion. And this bug was even worse, because every time she tried to read, she got a splitting headache. This was just no fun at all.
Glinda went over to her dresser and pulled out a deck of cards. "Hey Elphie, let's play Uno. Maybe it'll take your mind off being sick for a while."
"Uno? What's that?" came the reply.
Glinda stared at her roommate in silence. "You mean, you've never played Uno?!"
"No…" Elphie responded as she took another sip of tea. "How do you play?"
"Well," Glinda explained, "you have to match either the colour or number of a card to play, and the black cards are wild, which means that you can change the colour with them." Glinda said, holding up a wild card to demonstrate. "The +2 means that the other person has to draw two cards, the skip skips the next person, and a reverse reverses the direction."
"Oh. I see. But since there are only two of us, what happens with the reverses?" Elphie questioned.
"They just function as skips. The person who played it goes again," Glinda stated. "Oh, and one last card: the draw four." Glinda made a dramatic motion and pulled the aforementioned card out of the deck. "You can only play it if you have no more of the colour that you're playing on, and it makes the next person draw four and you get to change the colour!" Glinda exclaimed. "C'mon, I'll help you the first couple of times,"
"Okay," Elphaba conceded, as Glinda began to deal. She and Elphie picked up their hands and Glinda turned over the first card, which was a yellow eight.
"So, I could play any yellow card or an eight, right?" Elphie clarified.
"Yep!" Glinda giggled, "or you could play a yellow eight!"
Elphaba smirked and put down a yellow 3. "Well, it looks a little bit like an eight," she joked.
The game continued on, with Elphaba and Glinda alternating cards with the occasional skip and draw two thrown in. When they were both down to 'Uno', it was Glinda's turn to go first.
"Ozdamn it, I have to draw," Glinda sighed. She picked up a card, and it was a green zero. Not much help when the card on top was a blue four. "Alright, Elphie, your turn,"
Elphaba looked at the card in her hand. "Yes!" she exclaimed, putting down her final card, a red four. "I win!" She grinned at her roommate.
"Good for you, Elphie! But it's my turn to win next time," Glinda warned, laughing.
"I can't believe I'd never played this until today," came a muffled voice from under the pile of blankets.
"Neither can I," Glinda replied, "but now that you have, we can play it whenever you'd like."
"Let's play it again right now," Elphaba suggested.
"Okay," Glinda agreed, "but I get all the green cards this time!"
"Hey! You're just jealous. Green's my colour!" Elphaba laughed.
