Chapter 5: Meetings and Discussions

"Bruce," Batman scowled as he continued to type. He knew that tone of voice, he honestly disliked that tone of voice, especially when it came from her. Wonder Woman frowned and gripped his shoulder, not hard enough to cause pain but firm enough to make him pause. He turned slowly, facing the Amazonian.

"We need to talk."

"What about?" He knew he was being difficult but as of right now, his patience was wearing thin.

Diana, as usual, took his mood in strides. She merely raised an eyebrow, totally ignoring his brooding aura, "About our young heroes. What are you going to do about them?"

"I told you, all of us are going to meet to decide their fate. It is clear that a majority of you don't approve of my...extreme reaction to the threat they pose."

"Bruce, it's not that we do not agree with you per say, it's just that, well... Maybe we shouldn't jump to such worse case scenarios so soon."

Batman turned back around to face the main monitor, "That is why I called the meeting, to discuss the fates of these young heroes, and how they'll fit into our world. Or at least, how we will go about sending them back."

"You think they'd choose to stay?"

"Anything is possible."

Diana nodded before glancing at what Batman was doing on the main monitor. Her brow rose again when she glimpsed the brief messages he had typed out, "What are you doing?"

"Whether they decide to stay or find a way back to their dimension, it is inevitable that they will be staying in our world for at least a few months. I figure that if they plan to stay here for a while, and eventually interact with our world, it would be a good idea for them to meet their mentor counterparts. In Zatanna's case, I don't want her to be surprised if she suddenly runs into her younger self, or for her enemies to target this young Zatanna without her understanding why. I'm sending a quick message to Aquaman, Green Arrow, and Zatanna, requesting them to come up to the Watchtower for a private meeting. While Green Arrow is ignoring our calls and messages, Aquaman and Zatanna should respond back fairly quickly."

Diana nodded, holding her chin, "Did you explain the situation to them?"

Batman finished typing, closing the files before standing up, "No. It's best to explain the situation to them in person. That way, there would be less room for misinterpretation and they will have proof right in front of them."

"You're going to let them meet?"

"It's faster that way. I'll explain the situation thoroughly before introducing them to their proteges."

A teasing smile graced the princess' lips, "Why don't we explain it to them together?"

Bruce frowned at her, "And why is that?"

She smirked, "I don't trust you to be as...objective about our young heroes is all. We wouldn't want Zatanna, or Hera forbid, Aquaman to meet them with unfavorable impressions, now would we?"

At that, the older Bat snorted, shaking his head as he started walking towards the meeting room.

The younger heroes sat around one of the cafeteria tables, munching away on their respective meals. Once again, they had established a telepathic link in order to communicate without any eavesdroppers listening in. Kid Flash had just finished explaining to them what had transpired during their brief time of unconsciousness.

Finally, a dimension that isn't out to kill us. At least not at every waking moment, how nice. Artemis took a sip of her soda, washing down the sandwich she had just finished.

Our situation has improved but we must not let our guards down. While these older heroes do resemble our own Justice League, it is unfortunate to say that the differences are big enough that we still cannot fully trust them as of yet. Aqualad had long since finished his own meal, his hands now grasped together on the table with his chin resting on top of them.

I hate to admit it, but even at full strength, I doubt we'd be able to take them on. It's no different from us trying to take on the League back home. And we all know how difficult that was. Even if they were fighting at forty percent capacity due to mind control... Zatanna winced, shaking her head at the memory of Vandal Savage's takeover of the League.

But they don't want to harm us, they aren't evil! We don't really need to be so... I don't know, hostile towards them, do we...? M'gann glanced over at her alternate uncle. He looked a bit different from her own uncle, but he seemed to act so similarly, at least in their initial meeting. She couldn't imagine him being her enemy, at least not when someone wasn't controlling his mind.

They were certainly being hostile towards us before... Everyone could practically hear Superboy growl in their heads, earning a few bemused smiles from the team.

Kid Flash let out an awkward cough, cautiously looking at the young Kryptonian, Um, didn't you...attack them first...?

Everyone's eyes turned to look at the boy in question, who merely shrugged at them, Details.

Most of them started to laugh, quite a few covering their mouths to prevent a louder outburst.

Sitting one table over, Superman glanced over at the Team, his super hearing able to pick up their laughter. Green Lantern pushed his tray of food to the side, looking at the young heroes before returning his gaze to Superman, "They're having another telepathic conversation. A handy way to communicate without electronics over long distances, and as we see now, communicating without having to talk aloud."

Superman nodded as he turned back to Green Lantern, "I'm a bit curious as to how they are so casual about letting others in their minds all the time. J'onn avoids going into anyone's mind unless absolutely necessary, even villains."

Said Martian nodded, "I learned early on that those of Earth do not have such mental capabilities and also have very strict beliefs about their privacy. Even among the closest of friends, I have been told that it is prudent to ask for permission."

Lantern nodded, cupping his chin with one hand, "They must have absolute trust in one another, at least as comrades in arms. A team of kid heroes... I wonder what our counterparts were thinking when they formed such a young group?"

"I'm sure we can ask the Team after we earn their trust," Superman smiled, looking at both J'onn and Lantern. He turned to the final member of their table, who had been strangely quiet for the entire meal. What was more surprising, was the fact that Flash was just poking at the food on his tray rather than devouring it like a starved beast, his cheek pressed onto the palm of his other hand.

"You alright Flash?" Superman put a hand on the Speedster's shoulder, causing the man to jump.

"Huh? Oh yeah I'm fine, just thinking, you know?"

Green Lantern smirked, "So that's why you look like you're about to cry." Flash gave the older man a half-hearted glare before shaking his head.

"C'mon Flash, tell us what's wrong. Is it about what Kid Flash said?" Superman quirked an eyebrow, crossing his arms.

Flash let out a drawn-out sigh, "Yeah I guess. I mean, when we started this team, I thought it was such a cool thing to do, you know? Not just heroes who happened to team up once and be done with the whole thing, but a group dedicated to peace on Earth, handling bigger threats and just generally doing good. Then, when we had this amazing idea to include every hero we could reach out to as part of our group, I thought it couldn't get any better than this. But with everything the kid said I just don't know... Do you think people will really be that scared of us? I mean regular people, not the bad guys."

Green Lantern pondered the question for a few minutes before answering, "I'm part of the Green Lantern Corp. We are an intergalactic policing organization that holds the peace throughout multiple galaxies. I suppose, what we are attempting here can be said to be on a smaller scale for just Earth. However, there are a few major differences between the Green Lantern Corp and this larger Justice League we are forming. The Green Lanterns have been around for a long time, and their authority has been recognized by a majority of the galactic populace. Unlike the Green Lanterns, the Justice League is fairly new, fresh. While we do recognize the nations, as well as their laws and borders, we haven't officially been recognized as an authoritative body in the eyes of all the people of Earth. We are not all, strictly speaking, officially government sanctioned. We have no real and official connection to the people we are claiming to protect. At least, in the eyes of the government. The public people may love us, but from a military and political standpoint, I can see Kid Flash's point."

Superman held a hand up, "But the Green Lanterns are not really government sanctioned themselves, you don't answer to any of the governments you essentially police, but you do respect them, same as us."

Lantern nodded, "Yeah, but that leads me back to the recognition, and the validity of the Green Lantern Corp versus the Justice League. The Green Lanterns are led by the Guardians, a race of aliens with the reputation of being one of the oldest, wisest, and most intelligent beings in the universe. They are trusted, for the most part, and the Green Lanterns are a product of their work. From what I understand, the Corp has been around for millions of years, if not longer. They have had the time to establish a foundation of trust and experience with the governing bodies and civilizations. Unlike the Justice League. We've been around for, what, roughly two years? And that was with just the seven of us. People accept us as a group, because they trust in Superman, who has been the icon of our group. Even Flash has a popular following in his own city. You two are the outliers that balance out the caution people have against a vigilante like Batman, or an unknown like J'onn or Diana. It ultimately balances out so that a small group of superheroes, like ours, is seen with a more positive light of good than as a threat."

"But why would that change if we expand a bit? What is so different about having better, positive icons in a bigger group?" Flash sat up straight, giving Lantern a surprising amount of attention.

"Positive icons can only do so much. There is a big different between a group of seven heroes working together to protect a couple of cities, and an organization of fifty or so heroes coordinating together to monitor the entire planet. Imagine that you were the non-powered, regular president of a country. Then imagine how scary it is to think about a small army of people with amazing abilities being in one place, under one cause and working in one organization together. Hell, the kid wasn't wrong, Superman could probably conquer the entirety of the United States if he wanted to, by himself no less. Not to mention the giant laser we have built into the Watchtower. It could destroy a small city if we really wanted it to."

J'onn spoke up softly, "We must also take into consideration how most of the heroes we have gathered together are considered vigilantes in some way or form, no matter how beloved they are. Some heroes may be more...recognized than others, but the fact of the matter is, it is not possible for our group to really be sanctioned by the government, or any official governing body, for the abuse of our group's power would be too damning, for anyone."

Flash's shoulders sagged, his head racing from the whole discussion, "Then what do we do? What can we do?"

Superman smiled sympathetically, patting Flash on the back gently, "It's something we need to discuss, together, as a team. I'm sure Batman has some good ideas on how we can deal with all of this. I don't want to send the wrong message about our group, and I certainly don't want to frighten or fight the people we want to protect."

"The whole thing is complicated kid, but we didn't start all of this thinking it would be easy," Green Lantern smirked, giving Flash a firm pat as well.

"Yeah, speak for yourself. I thought it would just be an awesome get together you know. Kicking butt, shaking hands, kissing babes, making the world a better place. Not...all of this." Flash gestured to nothing in particular, just waving his hand.

Superman laughed, "You mean kissing babies."

"I know what I said!"

"I believe you humans have a saying, 'Nothing worth doing is ever easy'. What we are attempting to do, by forming the Justice League, is certainly on the grand scale of things that are worth doing. So, it should be no surprise that it would be quite difficult to do so," J'onn smiled slightly, his reddish orange eyes glowing warm with mirth.

"I guess..." Flash groaned, placing a hand over his eyes.

"C'mon kid, eat up. Something tells me we are going to be really busy for the next couple of weeks. Get some food in you while you can. We are definitely going to need that energy of yours," Lantern pushed a ham sandwich into Flash's mouth, earning an angry squawk from the man.

Both the Team and the four members of the Justice League were now openly chatting with one another, mostly about random things they noticed were different or similar between their dimensions. The Team was, quite often, fascinated or amused by the slight differences between their world and the world they now found themselves in. More so by their lack of existence. They talked about the reasons for these differences and how the lack of meeting certain people led to different results. The Team listened with rapt attention as Flash told them about how the Justice League of this world formed. The Team listened to every detail, even if they knew some of it was over blemished with Flash's typical flare, they slowly worked out how and why the Justice League of their own world differed so much from this one.

M'gann and J'onn were off to the side, with a protective Superboy only sitting a few feet away with a glare, talking about how drastically different the Mars that M'gann knew was from the Mars that J'onn suffered through.

The young heroes animatedly talked with the old, comparing their various theories and ideas. Some of the topics were more light-hearted, one example being the relationship Superman had with Louis Lane. It seemed that even in vastly differing worlds, Clark Kent would always stumble around the strong headed, beautiful journalist.

"Wait, you don't know who Iris West is?" Kid Flash stared at his alternate uncle with wide eyes, his mouth practically hanging open.

Flash shook his head, "Well, I mean, I know her as a news reporter in Central City, but we've never really formally met before."

Kid Flash frowned, "Doesn't she interview you a lot? Try to talk to you and figure out things about you and stuff, I mean you are the hero of Central City."

"I mean, yeah I guess, but that's every reporter and news outlet in Central City. She isn't the only one." Flash scratched the back of his head, suddenly feeling like he was being scolded.

"But-"

"Wally!" Artemis elbowed the young speedster in the stomach, making him yelp and glare at the blonde archer.

They switched to telepathy right away, the transition now practiced and as natural as breathing to them. What was that for?

Artemis rolled her eyes, stealing M'gann's signature line, Uh, hello Wally? Haven't you seen 'Back to the Future'? It's not time travel, but your uncle obviously hasn't met Iris properly in this world. Do you really want to make it weird and possibly mess things up by telling him who he is supposed to marry and stuff?

Oh crap, you're right. That would have been a total disaster. Thanks babe. Wally grinned at her, making her heart skip for a brief moment before she punched him hard in the shoulder. He yelped again, rubbing his arm, more so out of shock than pain.

Get a room you two. We really don't need to be feeling the aster between you two in our heads. Robin's quip made a few members of the Team suddenly chuckle or giggle.

Hey! I don't know how much more private we can get than telepathic conversations in our minds man.

As another bout of chuckles and giggles wracked the Team, Flash waved his hand in front of Wally's face, "Yoo hoo. I lost you. Are you guys doing that whole telepathy thing again? You know that's kind of rude when we were in the middle of a conversation!" Flash grinned, letting them know he was not being serious.

"Sorry Uncle Barry. Just had to sort some things out."

"I figured, but what was-" A beeping sound interrupted Flash, causing him to reach up and tap the communicator in his left ear, "What's up Bats?"

"I need you all to gather at the conference rooms on side B, now. Level ten. That means our...guests as well. Wonder Woman and I will meet you there. Batman out." The communicator promptly shut off, preventing Flash from asking any follow up questions.

Flash shrugged, standing up and waving his hand towards the Team, "Seems like Batman got things back in order. He asked us to take you guys to some conference rooms, probably so we can all finally sort this out. It's best not to keep him waiting!"

The Team briefly looked at one another before standing up and following the older heroes out of the cafeteria and down a corridor marked Deck B.

"So... are we not prisoners anymore?" Zatanna looked towards Green Lantern who was walking besides her.

He just shrugged his shoulders in response, "I wouldn't say you are prisoners, but we also can't let you just go around free."

"I was expecting Batman to throw us in jail cells..." Robin muttered under his breath, looking down contemplatively.

"He was going to." Superman spoke up, his super hearing catching Robin's words. The Boy Wonder looked towards the Man of Steel with a questioning look, "But he was convinced, in partly by you and Kid Flash, that it wasn't necessary."

Robin smirked, "Hard to believe anyone can convince him, especially suspicious people he doesn't know."

Superman laughed a little, shaking his head, "I don't know about your world's Batman, but ours is a bit of a softie under all that...brooding."

When Batman and Wonder Woman finally saw the group of heroes coming, it was to the sight of all of them, older and younger, laughing among themselves. While Batman couldn't say for sure, he had a strange feeling that he needed to cause Clark Kent some divine retribution.

"Hey Bats, we brought them. So, what's up?" Flash placed his hands on his hips, looking at the Dark Knight with a huge grin.

Ignoring the older speedster, Batman stepped forward, gesturing to a set of sliding double doors, "I need our guests to stay in there while we talk," Before any of the young heroes could protest, Batman cut them off, "I assure you, nothing will happen in there except you sitting down and talking. But I need to speak to my colleagues about something in private first."

Nodding their heads, some more reluctantly than others, the Team made their way inside, grumbling but not refusing. Each of them shuffled inside, Robin being the last. He paused at the door, glancing over his shoulder at the older Bat before stepping inside.

Batman stared at the door for a few seconds, deep in thought before he was interrupted by Green Lantern, "I hope you aren't going to tell us that the room really is a trap, because I don't see that going over well, with them and with us."

"No. Trapping them serves no purpose and seeing as how I am outnumbered five to one now, it wouldn't do me any good to go behind all of your backs." Bruce turned, heading down the hall, "That being said, Aquaman and Zatanna, our Zatanna, are here on the Watchtower. I thought you'd all like to be there when we explain the situation to them."

Superman smiled, making eye contact with Wonder Woman. He knew she was probably the one who convinced Batman.

Shaking his head, Flash followed the Dark Knight, "This is going to so freak Zatanna out. Can we not tell her, and just bring her into a room with her younger double? I'd pay to see that!"

That earned the speedster a slight whack to the head, courtesy of Green Lantern.

"So... alternate dimensions exist. Alternate dimensions where there are different versions of our world, of us, exist. These...kids. These young heroes traveled across two dimensions-"

"Three dimensions. Their own, then two after that."

"Right. Three dimensions. And you say that these young heroes are...the sidekicks of your alternate counterparts?"

"They prefer the term 'partners'."

"Partners, right. And you say that one of these kids is a... younger version of me?"

"Yes."

"I see... One more question, and this is the last one I think. You aren't on something, are you Bruce? Did you get hit by some weird magic artifact that made you go crazy?"

"That's two questions, Zatanna."

"Oh, bite me."

Flash laughed, "Yeah, we were a bit shocked, to say the least, when we first met them. More so when they explained who they were. But trust me, you can see the resemblance to us with some of them. And plus, their stories kind of check out with one another."

Zatanna rubbed two fingers against her forehead, muttering something about madness while Aquaman, who chose to remain standing with his arms crossed, snorted, "I have heard, and seen some stranger things than this. It matters not to me. But you wish for me to meet this...Aqualad? For what purpose?"

J'onn spoke up, "If they are going to be around for, what we foresee, a while. Those who are connected to these young heroes should be made aware of their existence, so as not to be confused or shocked at the similarities they share with you. Much like we did."

Superman spoke up next, "And we think it'll help them adjust to our world better if they met you both. Get a feel for what the Aquaman and Zatanna of this world are like."

Flash nodded, a big grin on his face, "Like, imagine if you were walking down the street and you suddenly bump into your alternate self! You would freak out over seeing a young version of yourself-" Flash paused when Zatanna glared at him, causing the speedster to hold his hands up in surrender, "Uh, a younger version of yourself, and she would freak out seeing a..." When the glare returned in full force, Flash gulped, "More mature version of herself. You know?"

Zatanna sighed, standing up and adjusting her magician's hat, "Well, I guess there isn't any harm in meeting them. What's the worst that could happen? It'll be interesting to say the least."

"I admit, I am also curious about this...other dimension. And about what Atlantis is like in this other world." Aquaman turned, his trident slamming into the ground with a loud clang.

"Sweet. I call taking Zatanna!" Flash whipped next to the magician, earning an eye roll from said girl before the two left the conference room.

Batman made his way out as well, "Zatanna, head to room C. Aquaman, room D. I will ask the other Zatanna and Aqualad to meet you both there."

Superman and Wonder Woman followed close behind Batman, the Man of Steel clearing his throat before speaking up, "Why don't you let me and Wonder Woman tell them that?"

Batman turned his head a little, glaring at Superman from the corner of his eye, "And why is that?"

"Do I really have to say?"

"Yes."

"Boys." Wonder Woman smiled, her hands clasped together behind her back as she walked between them. The two stopped immediately, not wanting to upset the Amazonian.

"Wow. For a few minutes there, I was half expecting them to have been joking around but…" Zatanna stood in front of her younger self, one eyebrow quirked up, one hand on her chin as she moved in circles around well…herself, "This is interesting to say the least."

"Tell me about it. I certainly did not expect this," Younger Zatanna had her hands on her hips, her eyes following the older Zatanna when she was in view before blowing a few stray strands of loose hair up from her face, "At least I still have a good fashion sense, in both a different world and in the future."

Older Zatanna grinned, stretching her arms up in the air as if she were presenting herself to a crowd, much like she did during one of her shows, "Why thank you very much. I was always one for making an impression. Learned it from my dad. I am sure your fashion sense is inspired much the same."

At the mention of her father, the young Zatanna's face fell, her eyes downtrodden. Seeing the girl's sad demeanor, the older Zatanna took a seat, gently patting the one next to her. As the younger Zatanna sat down, the older one took her hand, giving it a gentle squeeze, "Something wrong? Judging by how old you are, our dad should still be around. Did something happen to him…?"

The younger Zatanna had a shaky smile as she shook her head, "Oh…no. He is still alive, it's just…"

"What?"

A sigh escaped younger Zatanna's lips, "Do you have a Doctor Fate in your world?"

"Yeah, arguably the most powerful magic wielder in the entire world. Why?"

"It's a long story but… There was trouble in my world, where a group of sorcerers, along with a Lord of Chaos called Klarion the Witch Boy, used a magical gem to sort of make two worlds. One world had only adults, while the other world only had children under the age of eighteen. To fight this threat on both worlds, and bring balance back, I…put on the helmet of Nabu, and became Doctor Fate. After seeing all the trouble that had happened, Doctor Fate decided he would not give up my body, because the world needed a Lord of Order. Dad…gave Nabu his body in order to free me, and is the current Doctor Fate. Trapped really. Gave his word in a binding magic contract."

Older Zatanna was stunned, her mouth slightly agape. She quickly recovered, her eyes a little wide, "You seem to be treating Doctor Fate as some other entity, like the helmet is alive. Nabu? Isn't it just a magical artifact that gives power to the wearer? It has its own consciousness?"

Young Zatanna nodded, "Well, yeah. The spirit of Nabu, the Lord of Order, resides in the helmet. It is him that takes over and takes action while the wearer takes a back seat in their minds."

"But that doesn't make sense… Our Doctor Fate, Kent Nelson, lives in Fate's Tower with his loving wife, Inza. Kent is in full control and functions with the helmet's knowledge and powers. He has been around for a long while, the helmet and his magic prolonging his life, but he does not lose control of himself or his thoughts while doing so. At least from what I have seen and how he, Kent Nelson, treasures his wife. If it was this so called Nabu in control, would he love and care for Inza like that?"

"I…don't think so. But then…it must be one of the differences in our world. In mine, Kent Nelson quit being Doctor Fate after Inza passed away. The spirit of Nabu in the helmet takes control of the host rather than working together with it, compared to your world. Where the helmet gives knowledge and power and works in harmony with the host, the helmet in my world seems to fully take control of the body and mind."

"That…that is crazy. I can't imagine Doctor Fate being like that… To take over someone's body, not even having to listen to the host's wishes after having the helmet on.. It sounds so bizarre. Some might not even consider that to be a hero but…"

"Like a parasite?" Younger Zatanna had on a small smile, not at all ashamed, "It's certainly how I started thinking of Fate."

"My king."

"I am not really your king, am I now, boy?"

"It does not matter what world I stand in. You are the king of Atlantis. And from what I have known so far, a just man who fights for good. I serve King Arthur of Atlantis. That has not changed, my king." Aqualad had knelt before Aquaman, one arm atop his knee, the other behind his back.

Aquaman stared down at the young man, his eyes scrutinizing him before a smile graced his lips, "Stand, Aqualad. I know not what my counterpart has done to earn such loyalty from you, but if he can inspire a fine young man like yourself, then he must be a brave and noble person, worthy of my respect."

Aqualad stood, but kept his head slightly bowed, "The Aquaman of my world is indeed a magnificent king, a respected hero, and an invaluable teacher. I could not ask for a better mentor."

Aquaman nodded, pointing his hook hand towards the conference table, "Come, sit, tell me more about yourself, and the Atlantis you come from."

"As you wish, my king," Upon noticing Aquaman's missing hand, Aqualad's eyes widened, "Sire...what happened to your hand?"

Aquaman held the hook up, "Treachery, by my own brother cost me this hand. I was forced to sacrifice my hand, lest I lose my infant son."

"Lord...Orm? Lord Orm betrayed you? How? Why? I do not understand... Lord Orm is a trusted advisor and loyal brother to my king in my world. Why would he..."

"I cannot say for your world, but in mine, all Orm wanted was the throne. He was a two-faced traitor that wanted an all-out war with the surface world, and would murder me and my infant son without batting an eyelash. He acts like a loyal subject, while hiding a traitorous dagger ready to strike. He framed surface-dwellers for attacks made on Atlantis, and tried to trick the two sides into fighting each other by hiring assassins. Take heed, Aqualad. When you do return to your world, warn your king. And watch Orm closely."

Overwhelmed by all the information, but knowing what was being commanded of him was important, Aqualad once again bowed his head, "Of course my king. I will make sure no harm comes to my world's king, or his family."

Nodding his head in satisfaction, Aquaman let go of his trident to squeeze Aqualad's shoulder, "Good. Now tell me, is my counterpart also wise enough to have married Mera?"

"Yes sire. In fact, she leads the Conservatory of Sorcery in Atlantis, and trains many talented students in the mystic arts. I myself trained under her, before becoming my king's protege."

"A Conservatory of Sorcery, how interesting. We have no such thing in my Atlantis, but I will speak with Mera about it and see what she thinks. So she is just as talented in your world as mine. Tell me more."

"Of course. I had two great friends that trained alongside me, Tula and Garth..."

Hearing some giggles from the room the two Zatannas were in, as well as the animated conversation going on in Aquaman and Aqualad's room, Superman smiled, "Seems like they are getting along."

"I'd be more surprised if they weren't." Batman turned around, "Lets go. The rest of us need to talk."

"Now?" Flash glanced at the door that the two Zatannas were behind, "Can't we listen in on what they are talking about? This is too interesting to pass up!"

"Now."

"Aw..."
