Hey guys, I did not realize it had been so long!
I'm so sorry, but I've been a bit preoccupied with my other stories, hopefully you guys won't have to wait that long again :)
Please enjoy! xD
I was beyond grateful that it was too dark for me to see Percy clearly; I couldn't stand to see the hurt in his eyes.
Guilt wasn't a strong enough word to describe what I had felt when he said that he couldn't trust me either, that I was just going to send him back to Olympus when this was over.
Because it was true. I had planned to arrest him after I had taken care of Luke. If I didn't, then who else would. And if I let Percy go, Olympus would know that we had been working together and I'd end up behind bars myself, without my career to return to.
I knew how selfish of me it was to do that to him.
"Fine, just get me out of here." Percy said, and I heard him shaking his head.
Trying to distract myself from the guilt I was feeling, I imagined ways to get him out of the tunnel.
There was no pulling him out; the space was too small and his shoulders were too broad, if anything it would make it worse. And I'd already established that I wasn't going to leave him.
"Do you have a knife on you?"
I could imagine the look he was giving me. "Uh, no. Do I even want to know what you were going to do with it?"
"I was going to try and cut away some of the beam," I said with a roll of my eyes. Sure, it probably wouldn't have worked, depending on how thick the wood was.
"These beams are too thick," Percy said, confirming my doubts. "Besides, you'd end up cutting me with it, not the wood."
I sighed, rubbing a hand over my face. "Can't you find any way to make yourself fit?"
"I'm trying, alright," Percy snapped back, clearly starting to get frustration. "It's not my fault that I'm not as tiny as you."
"I could just dislocate your shoulder and pull you out-" I said jokingly, secretly finding his situation a little bit funny.
Percy scoffed. "Haha, that's very funny, Annabeth." His voice dripped with sarcasm.
"Actually, would that work?"
"Maybe," Percy agreed. "But good luck trying to do that in here, and I'm not particularly eager to try."
I couldn't believe him, this could be the only way to get him out. "It might be our only option, besides, I know how to pop it back in."
"That's really reassuring, but what if it doesn't work? I'll be stuck in here with a dislocated shoulder, no thanks."
"Look, unless you have any other ideas, you don't have much of a choice."
He stubbornly remained silent.
"Don't be a wuss, Percy. I know they hurt but would you rather by stuck in here?"
"Ugh," He let out an annoyed huff. "How exactly do you plan to do it then?"
I shrugged, knowing he couldn't see me. If I was going to do this, may as well do it before he had the chance to change his mind. I grabbed his shoulders, making sure they were securely in place before I reached behind him and wrenched his arm to his opposite side, hard and fast.
Percy choked out a gasp, impressively holding in a yelp.
Without his shoulder blocking the way, there was now significantly more room for him to move through.
"Sorry," I said, helping him keep the weight of his arm.
I heard him grit his teeth. "You could've at least warned me."
"Finally!" I cried in delight, exiting the tunnel in front of Percy.
Four miles or so away from the safe-house, the tunnel had dropped off into a sewer pipe, which wasn't particularly pleasant but it was more comfortable than crawling. Though the sewer pipe enabled us to walk instead, even I had to stoop to avoid hitting my head, and it was just as dark in there until we reached the end. Not to mention the thick sludge we had to walk through.
Percy let out a loud sigh of relief when he felt the sun on his face.
The tunnel came out into a deep ditch, it was maybe a two meter climb to the top, and it looked too steep for Percy to climb with his shoulder. Other than climbing out, the only other option was walking for god knows how long until the ground leveled out.
Percy had been following my line on sight, before he turned his gaze to the incline. "I can make it," He said, obviously knowing what I was about to say.
Using tufts of grass as anchors, Percy started to move up the hill, and he made it up surprisingly quick. "Come on, we have to move."
Raising my eyebrows, I followed him up. Looking back in the direction of the tunnel, I couldn't see the house, but I could hear a highway some distance to the west.
"So, which way?" I asked, looking up at Percy.
He considered, looking back to the house. "They wouldn't expect us to go back to the house, and we had to leave our stuff behind," Realization turned his face dark. "Shit! The passports!"
Goddamn it! I cursed. Those passports may possibly have been our only chance of getting out of the country. And now they knew exactly what we had been planning to do.
Percy looked at me. "What do we do?"
"How long will it take your friend to make a new one?"
"Not long, but I have no way of contacting him at the moment; something happened and he has to hide for a while."
I huffed in annoyance. Things really couldn't get much worse, unless we were found again. "It's ok; we have to get back anyway. Maybe they didn't find the passports."
Percy nodded. "Mind fixing my arm before we go back?"
"Oh, yeah, of course."
I told him to stay completely still as I grabbed his wrist with one hand and placed the other on his shoulder. Maintaining eye contact with me, Percy only winced slightly when I popped his arm back into place.
"You ok?"
He nodded, grimacing as he rotated his shoulder. "Let's go."
The thought of walking back when we'd crawled all this way out put me a bit of a bad mood. What if our attackers hadn't left, then all the trouble we went to so we could get out alive would've been for nothing.
"It was the Titans, wasn't it." I asked, looking sideways at Percy.
He nodded slightly, his black hair hanging in his eyes. "Them or the Giants. I don't know how they found us," He added, anticipating my next question.
"Your friend isn't involved with them is he?" If he was, then he might have sold us out to them.
"Absolutely not."
I hoped he wasn't just trying to defend his friend out of blind trust. There was a definite possibility that whoever Percy's friend was had been working for Luke.
Thinking of trust, the guilt I'd been suppressing since our argument in the tunnel started to grow. Before it had been easier to ignore it because I hadn't seen the look of hurt on his face, but now I could make out the anger and bitterness in his eyes.
"Percy, I-" I started, unsure of how to apologize. "I'm sorry, for what I said."
Percy let out a sigh. "It's fine."
I'd learnt by now that pushing Percy into talking in this kind of situation was pretty much useless, and it really only made him angrier. I could only hope that he understood how sorry I was, but there was nothing I could do. I had a duty to the community, and Percy had broken numerous laws just in joining the Titans, let alone murdering someone. However many times he claimed that it wasn't him who killed Porphyrion, that didn't clear him of the many other crimes he'd probably committed.
I looked down at my feet. Why was I even feeling conflicted about this? It should be a simple decision, but I had clearly become more attached to Percy than I'd thought.
Back at the house, I let out a sigh of relief when we found that it was empty.
There were a few shattered windows, bullet holes in the walls and many pieces of furniture had been knocked over. I ran to the drawers where I'd put the fake passports.
Those passports were our lifeline, we needed them to get out of the country before the Titans found us again, or worse, before Olympus found us.
"Oh thank god." I sighed in relief and held up the papers for Percy to see.
Percy smiled, walking over to me. He took the passports from me and put them in the bag he had been filling with the things we'd need. Most it was ammunition and guns.
"How exactly do you expect to pass customs with fake passports and a bag full of guns?" I asked with a raised eyebrow.
Percy rolled his eyes. "We'll get rid of the guns before we get to the airport, but we'll need them for now, trust me."
I gathered some of the food from the cupboards and put them in the bag, and then we went back out to the car parked out front. Our hijacked car was relatively unharmed, which wasn't very smart of the people who attacked us; if I was in their position, I would've at least disabled the car in case they did come back.
I slid into the driver's seat before Percy could get there, and he shot me a grudging, very childish, look as he walked around the front of the car to the passenger side.
Once Percy was inside, I turned the key in the ignition and put the car into reverse, before turning around back towards the highway.
We knew we'd have to be especially careful for a while, they would still be looking for us in the area, and with Olympus' technicians on our tail, if one camera spotted us and we were identified, we were done for.
"Should we just lay low for a couple days? Find somewhere to hide and then get out of the country?" I asked, glancing at him quickly before looking back at the road.
Percy let out a long breath and sunk into his seat. He ran a hand over his already messy hair. "Yeah, that would probably be a good idea. But where do we go?"
"Hmm, the Titans would know your usual hiding spots.. I think I know a place. I used to go there a lot when I was little, only Thalia knows where it is, but she would never think that I'd tell you where."
"You have a secret hideout? From when you were little?"
"We were exploring," I explained. "And I kinda fell in there."
Percy raised an eyebrow, but then he just shrugged a shoulder. "Ok then, to your hideout we go."
OMIGOD I AM SO SORRY!
I didn't even realise how long its been! And this chapter was pretty uneventful, too, hope you guys will forgive me for basically neglecting this story for so long :P
Please R&R, I'll try to keep track of time better ;D
