"I still don't see why you couldn't just send me the book," Jean complained.
Jackie took a deep breath for patience so she wouldn't slap the other woman across the face with the stapler. The thought was tempting. She'd already explained this over the phone, and she hadn't eaten lunch yet.
"The books on this floor can't be checked out," Jackie replied. "They can only be browsed in this room, under my direct supervision."
Jean pursed her lips in a sour expression. "You let Creed check out a book on ancient Egypt."
Jackie flushed slightly and hoped the brown shade of her skin would hide the blush. Yes, she had let one Victor Creed, Ancient to Medieval Humanities professor, walk out of the library with a book from this floor which absolutely was not supposed to leave. Ever. But in her defense, she'd been very aroused and flustered, and the man knew how to make an exit.
"And Professor Creed had to fill out fourteen different forms in order to do that." Jackie picked up a stack of papers at random and plopped them on the counter between her and Jean. "Do you want to spend the next half hour of your life doing that or do you want to sit down at a table and read your book in peace?"
Jean narrowed her eyes and considered the stack of papers. Jackie kept her arm slung over the top sheet and really hoped the other woman didn't look too closely. The papers were just a pile of accidental misprints that somehow got sent to her printer. She'd been planning on dropping them in the recycling bin at the end of the day.
"Fine." Jean grabbed her book but didn't move to leave. "So has Logan had to finally put out a restraining order against that poor girl?"
Jackie's hackles immediately went up. Tattle telling to Dean Xavier was bad enough, but now even after Logan had actually pulled through as a good guy and made plans to support Marie and their baby, this bitch still had it out for them.
"What do you mean?" She asked coolly.
Jean tried to shrug and look casual. "Oh, I'm sure you've heard. That girl—what was her name—Marie? She's been going around campus talking about how she's moving in with him and they're going to get married now that she's pregnant."
Jackie stared right back at her and refused to take the bait. "I don't see what a restraining order would have to do with their happy relationship."
"Well, you know Logan," Jean said as if that settled the matter. "He'd never settle down like that. It's just not in his nature. Some men can't be tamed and that's—"
"Such a load of bullshit," Logan growled, stalking up behind her.
Jean turned around and gaped at him, while Jackie smirked. She kind of wished she had some popcorn to munch on while she watched this showdown. Or maybe that was her body reminding her yet again that she hadn't eaten today.
"Logan, I—" Jean started to say, but he cut her off.
"I am in a happy, loving goddamn relationship with Marie, and I'm gonna fucking marry her and raise the shit out of our baby too," Logan told her. "And what you're going to do is march your ass over to that table, sit down, and conduct yourself like a professional adult, because if you don't, I'll tell Scott exactly how long we were fucking before he found out."
Jean's face paled and she walked away without another word. Jackie barely resisted the urge to give a round of applause, but Marie had popped out from behind the far stack of bookshelves and started making her way over. She looked between Logan and Jean sitting at the table with a worried glance.
"Jean's just pissy because I won't let her check out her book," Jackie reassured Marie. "Logan had to remind her that she's supposed to be a professional, not a spoiled five year old throwing a tantrum."
Marie relaxed and smiled a little. "Are you sure these books can't be checked out? Because I heard you let Professor Creed—"
"One time!" Jackie interrupted with an indignant cry. "The one and only time in three years that I let someone leave here with a book, and everyone knows about it!"
Marie's smile turned into a grin. "Not everyone. Just like, most of campus. Anyway, I got the screenshots of that book I needed, so—"
"We can take screenshots?" Jean asked with wonder from her nearby table.
Logan turned around to glare at her, and Jackie snickered. Marie had pity though and nodded.
"Yeah, or use the photocopier," she said. "You can't take the books with you, but there's nothing wrong with pictures."
Jean looked at Jackie. "Why didn't you tell me that?"
Jackie shrugged. "Because you have bad karma."
Jean huffed and took her book over to the photocopier to get started. Logan waited until he was sure she had walked far enough away before he turned back.
"Has Victor invited you to our wedding yet?" Logan asked Jackie.
She shook her head. "No. Why would he?"
"We thought … " Marie paused and frowned. "Won't you be his plus one?"
"Yeah," Logan added. "Why hasn't he asked you yet?"
The elevator dinged and all three of them turned to see Victor step out of it. He walked over, slowing his gait and regarding the group suspiciously as they stared at him.
"Why haven't you asked Jackie to be your date to our wedding yet?" Logan demanded.
Victor's lip curled up in a sneer. "Because you just fucking ruined it, dipshit."
"Oh were you going to—just now?" Marie tugged on Logan's arm. "C'mon, we should let them have their moment."
"Okay, but just to be clear though," Jackie said. "I'm invited to your wedding either way. Give me an invitation."
"I sent you one in the mail last week," Marie told her.
"Did it have Final Notice stamped on the envelope?" Jackie asked.
"No."
"Neither of you get jealous," Jackie began, glancing between Victor and Marie. "But Logan and I sorta crashed at the same apartment for a while, and he knows damn well I don't open any mail that doesn't say Final Notice."
Logan rolled his eyes. "We'll send you a damn e-vite then."
"So go fuck off and do that," Victor said.
"Let us know either way please, so we can get the seating arrangement right," Marie requested. "Sorry for ruining the surprise."
"Let me know if you need anything." Victor said, not unkindly.
"I'm handling it." Logan slung his arm around Marie's waist and started steering her toward the elevator. "Just get your mangy ass there on time."
Victor snorted. "Who else would protect your runt ass from her family?"
Logan and Marie stepped into the elevator, and he gave his older brother a little nod. Marie outright waved, and Victor nodded back. She smiled to herself at their brotherly antics, pretending like they still didn't like each other. She knew how much Logan appreciated having a family member present at this important moment in his life. In their lives.
"What did that mean?" Marie asked her soon-to-be husband.
"The best man started out as the best swordsman the groom could afford to hire to fight off any angry brothers or lovers who might want to stop the wedding," Logan explained. "Victor is really into that history stuff."
Marie smiled. "And you like listening to him talk about his history stuff."
Logan smiled back down at her. "I like how beautiful you look in your dress. I like that we've decided on James or Anna. I like a cold bottle of Molson's with your pecan pie. I hate my asshole brother."
"Love-hate," Marie sing-songed, poking him in the side. "You two love to hate each other, but deep down—"
Logan ushered her out of the elevator when the doors opened. "I love you, and our baby, and my motorcycle."
"Admit you're happy that you have a brother and our baby has a godfather," Marie said.
Logan raised an eyebrow. "You're happy about the baby's god-father?"
"I'm happy about pretty much everything right now," Marie admitted softly.
The wedding plans were going well, especially since they agreed on a small ceremony with only a few guests. Victor would be Logan's best man, and Jubilee, Kitty, and Jackie would all be Marie's bridesmaids. Logan had invited Ororo and her husband Hank too. Marie knew her as Professor Munroe, and it was a little bit weird to now be on a first name basis, but the two women had always liked each other in class.
But best of all was that Dean Xavier had granted Logan paternity leave indefinitely. Right now he was using the time off to help Marie with the wedding planning and adding on a nursery to his house, but he planned to stay home and help after the baby was born too so she'd still be able to attend school as a part-time student. Her graduation date would have to be stretched out an extra year, but Marie was ecstatic Logan was so supportive that he'd do that for her. Apparently his work in the military—that he absolutely could not tell her about—had been lucrative enough that he could afford to not work for a few years and still financially support them. And when the baby was old enough, Logan could return to coaching if he wanted.
"I'm glad this happened," Logan confessed in an equally soft voice.
Marie surged up and kissed him in the middle of the library lobby, which attracted several hoots and catcalls from the students who saw. Maybe none of this had been planned, but she was certain everything would work out great.
A/N: Rain and hail and tornados, oh my! That's the weather for today in central Oklahoma, and let me explain you a thing about how difficult it is to get internet access during a tornado watch.
Anyway. Assuming that I don't die tonight Wizard of Oz style, I'll start the Marie x Victor fic on this Friday. I have three chapters written already, so I'll put chapter one up on Friday, chapter two on Monday, chapter three on Wednesday, and a NEW chapter NEXT Friday. Love Me Do will continue to update as usual on Mondays, but this Marie x Victor story will update on Fridays instead of Wednesdays, which have gotten too busy for me in my personal life to consistently post fic chapters on that day.
So did everyone like this story? Happy with the epilogue? Have more Rogan ideas? Leave a review!
