It was past curfew again when she entered the Gryffindor common room, hoping to find it empty. It was not. But there was only one person standing there, and she was surprised to see that it was Remus. He was standing right inside the portrait, and she almost walked into him.
Dread filled her when she saw what he was looking at, though. The friggin Marauder's Map.
She panicked, so she did the first thing that came to mind. Which was completely idiotic. She tapped the map with her wand. "Mischief Managed."
They just stared at each other for something that felt like hours. Hermione had no idea what to say.
Remus blinked. "What..how? Who told you?"
Hermione sighed while inwardly scolding herself for being so completely and utterly stupid. She also realised she needed time to think before she could answer his questions, so she decided to put off the inevitable for just a little while longer. "It is too late, Remus. I am not having this conversation until I have slept. The first lesson is at noon tomorrow, so we have time before then. Meet me in the Shrieking Shack at eight. Bring the Marauder's Map so the rest cannot find us. And do not tell anyone about this. It is crucial that you don't. I know I sound melodramatic, but you will understand tomorrow. Do not tell anyone, or so help me God I will obliviate you all. That is how important this is. Do you understand?"
Remus just nodded with a shocked expression, and Hermione headed for the dorm. "Good night, Remus. See you tomorrow."
-o-
Hermione was a bundle of nerves the next morning. She had woken up around six am, and given up on the idea of sleeping anymore. She was at the Shrieking Shack at seven.
She had spent twenty minutes cleaning. Ten of them were spent on two chairs and a table. They were by now almost presentable, at least good enough for sitting in.
Hermione picked up her shared notebook.
I screwed up. I blew my cover, and I am now waiting for Remus to meet me. It was just him, though. But still.
In little under a minute, text appeared in her book.
How did you blow your cover? And I understand your anxiety, but it had to happen sooner or later, don't you think? Just tell him the Remus-version of what you told me. I hate to admit to this, but Remus is the most reasonable of the marauders.
Severus' relaxed tone actually calmed Hermione down quite a lot, and she sighed
Thank you. The anxiety level was at a thirteen on a scale from one to ten, and is now down to a nine. And I am not being ironic. I will explain everything later. I think I hear him coming.
She quickly stuffed her notebook in her bag, and listened to the approaching steps.
When Remus entered the Shrieking Shack, Hermione was sitting on the edge of the chair, looking like a bundle of nerves. A bundle of nerves that had just seen a ghost. A horrible ghost.
Remus stopped to look at her. "Are you alright?"
Hermione shook her head. "Not really. I have dreaded this since I arrived here. Sit down please?"
Remus sat down, and looked at her. "I did not tell anyone. Should I fear for my life?"
The last thing was meant as a joke, but Hermione's brain was not really cooperating with her. "Not unless you try to kill me first. Luckily we are not even close to the full moon." She instantly slapped her hand over her mouth. "Merlin, Remus, I am sorry. I did not mean it like that. How about I start from the beginning? I will give you the summary at least."
Remus' hurt expression turned curious, and he nodded. Hermione took a deep breath.
"I am from 1998, and I am here to change the timeline. Too many awful things will happen, and I will try to prevent as many as possible. Time-travel is a one-way ticked kind of thing, though. So I am staying here. I know you from the future. And I have proof."
She opened her bag and pulled out her Marauder's Map. Pulling out her wand, she tapped the map. "I solemnly swear I am up to no good." Remus reached inside his pocket, and she shook her head. "No, I did not steal yours. This is the same map as you are holding there. I just brought it with me from 1998."
Hermione took a deep breath, and continued. "Your boggart is the moon, and you turn it to a deflating balloon. Your patronus is a wolf, and Fenrir Greyback is who turned you into a werewolf. I killed him by the way, with a little help from Sybill Trelawney. James and Sirius learned how to become animagi to help you through your monthly ordeal. James is a stag, and Sirius a black dog. Oh, and Peter is a rat. Not very helpful if you ask me. You are the reason why everyone thinks the Shrieking Shack is haunted. With no humans to bite, you hurt yourself, and the screams could be heard miles away."
She looked at Remus. "Do you believe me?" Remus just nodded, so Hermione continued. "If something should happen to me, and I am unable to prevent one of the awful things, remember this. The one to blame is the one who faked his death. The one that owns the finger."
When Remus looked at her with a confused expression, Hermione just sighed. "I know. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. But it will, if the worse should happen. Oh, and I am not sure if I should tell you this, but Severus is one of the good ones, despite appearances. Any questions?"
It took him a moment, but finally he seemed to snap out of it, giving Hermione a curious look. "Where were you yesterday? You disappeared from the map, and suddenly appeared again. With Severus."
Hermione burst out laughing. "That is what you choose to ask me? And I am sorry, but I won't tell you that at this point. I need to talk to Severus first." Remus just nodded, and Hermione leaned forward and looked at him. "You cannot tell the others. Not now. I should not even be telling you this."
Remus did the nod again, and Hermione was ready to give up. "Very well. Since I think you need some time to process this, perhaps we could continue this later? My birthday was yesterday, and I have paperwork to take care of. I need a Gringotts vault among other things."
This got his attention. "Your birthday was yesterday? And you did not tell us?"
Hermione shrugged. "I forgot my own birthday, actually. But Severus didn't. There was cake and presents. Oh, and napkins with unicorns."
Remus looked perhaps more shocked at this than anything else she had told him. "Unicorns... What? I mean, Severus Snape, Severus Snape gave you cake and presents?"
Hermione nodded with a smile. "Indeed. Told you he was one of the good guys. I will see you later, Remus."
Hermione headed straight for Albus' office. She had already told him that Severus knew, and now she had to tell him about Remus.
She found the headmaster behind his desk, and he smiled as he saw her enter.
-o-
Hermione was relieved when she left Albus' office. He had not been too concerned with Remus knowing, seeing how Remus was somewhat used to having secrets.
Still, though, Hermione did not quite know where to go from here.
The room knew you, when you arrived, she thought. Maybe you can find some answers there?
