AN: This chapter was redone because I felt that the other version wasn't well written. So I hope this gives it a little more class.
Night looms over the little village of Berk. Along with the darkness also came Berks not so friendly neighbors "DRAGONS!" Yep dragons, as in the flying, fire breathing, lizards. These dragon don't steal gold or princesses though. No they steal food, not as interesting but hey, it sucks starving you know.
Either way I'm Hiccup. Why should you care though, no one else does. If anything people despise me and wouldn't even blink if I disappeared. But sometimes the gods like to mess with fate as I have now learned. So now I am the Volkin and this is my story.
I pulled open the door and quickly shut it as a nightmare shot its flame at me. I pressed my back up to the door keeping it shut. After several seconds I opened the door to see that it was completely destroyed "Great another thing for me to get in trouble for." I muttered bitterly.
I stepped out and started to run in the direction of the forge and was met by rather pleasant remarks "Get inside!" "What is he doing out?!" "Leave this to the real vikings." 'Well gee, hello to you too.' I thought sarcastically as I continued on.
I felt myself get pulled back as a nadder flew over firing at the path I was taking. I was lifted off of the ground and I saw my dad, Aka the chief "What are you doing out?! What is he doing out!?" He asked everyone around us. He sighed and rubbed the bridge of his nose "Just… get to Gobber." He said shoving me in the direction of the smithy.
I made it there within a minute. I walked in and quickly grabbed my apron "Ahh you showed up. I about thought you were carried away." He said as he pounded a sword straight "Wouldn't everyone love that." I mumbled out knowing that there was a partial truth to it "What was that?" I shook my head "Nothing Gobber."
I grabbed an axe and started to sharpen it "So I've been meaning to ask, what is in the back?" I turned around and grinned "This Gobber… is my bola launcher." I said walking over to it "Please tell me you have at least tested it?" I shook my head "No… but I know it will work. All I need is a chance." I told him. He shook his head no "No Hiccup, I don't want you to get hurt or anyone else." He said referencing to my other failures.
"Please Gobber, one dragon and I might get noticed in a good way." I begged him. He shook his head once more "Maybe in the future Hiccup, but not today." I looked down in defeat "Ok." His eyes softened a bit before he put a hand on my shoulder "You'll get out there one day I swear, just not now." I nodded before grabbing the axe that I was previously working on and continued to sharpen it.
We continued to take orders until Gobber turned to me putting on his axe prosthetic "They need me out there Hiccup. You stay put… there." I looked at him funny "You know what I mean." He said before letting out a war cry and joining the fight. I walked over to the pile of weapons and stopped looking at the bola launcher 'Screw it'
I grabbed it by the handles and wheeled it out of the smithy "Hey, where are you going?" "Get back here!" I turned my head to the crowd "I'll be back later!" I called before running up to a quiet hill when I got there I quickly set it up and got on the launcher "Come on give me something to shoot." I mumbled.
After a couple of minutes I heard the most terrifying sound to viking kind. It was the sound of the night fury. The sound was a very sharp whistle followed by an explosion of the catapult in front of me. I watched a figure fly through it and back up to the star filled sky. I put a lead on it and pulled the trigger.
I was thrown off of it but I stood back up quickly looking up to the sky. Then I heard a screech before watching it fall towards Ravens point "I hit it… I hit it! Did anyone see that?!" I said turning around. No one was there. Then I heard the sound a breaking wood and I sighed knowing what it was "Except for you." I said bitterly turning around to meet a nightmare.
I evaded a shot and took off back to the village. I was almost there while narrowly evading a couple of flame shots along the way. But as my luck has it I tripped on a root and the nightmare pinned me between its claws. I turned upwards and look at the dragon.
It looked down at me "Do it." I said wishing for it to be over. I closed my eyes waiting for the burning feeling. A couple of seconds later I cracked open my eye to see it looking at me weird "I said do it!" I shouted at it now fully prepared to die. It reeled its head back "Why would you want to die?"
My eyes widened and I blinked several times "D-did you just talk?" I whispered out. I watched its eyes widen as well "You understand me?" I nodded my head. It blinked a couple of times as well before asking "So… why would one as young as yourself wish for death?" I stayed silent not wanting to express my feelings to a dragon.
After a few seconds passed the dragon got the message. It took its claws away from me and leaned down "Remember young one, everyone has a purpose in life even if it's not clear at first." It told me before taking off. I sat there for a few more seconds in confusion before getting up and brushing myself off.
My dad showed up a few seconds later and looked at me with a worried look "Are you ok?" He asked me "Just peachy dad." I muttered brushing off the dirt on me. I saw relief flash across his face "Good… get back to the house and keep yourself out of trouble." I nodded and walked back to our house with my head down thinking about what just happened.
When I reached the house I looked over in the direction of the forest and remembered the night fury. I looked back at the house and then to the forest 'I can't just leave it out there.' I thought before running off in the direction of the forest. I went in the direction of Ravens point.
After about an hour of searching I was ready to give up "Some people lose a knife or a mug but not me, no I lose an entire dragon!" I said angrily smacking a branch just for it to his my back in the face. I glared at the branch before seeing a destroyed tree behind it "What the…?"
I looked behind the tree to see a large gash in the ground. Walked up to it and knew instantly that this is where the night fury landed. I looked back at the destroyed tree and then back to the hill that the gash went over. I walked up to the edge of the hill and peeked over it. I gasped when I looked over.
There was the Night Fury in all of its glory
AN: The chapters do get longer and better written, I just didn't have a lot to work with on this one when I redid it. Also I do get better at writing the further along I got in the story just because I gained experience as I continued along.
