Nearly half an hour after her conversation with Barba, Olivia was pacing the apartment, Judson held strategically in her arms. There was something in just thinking about Jack Sutton that made Olivia feel on edge, William Lewis had the same effect on her, even now that he was dead. It made her feel the need to have Jud close and secure in her grasp.
There was a knock on her apartment door ten minutes later. Olivia pulled the door opened and Barba walked in, no invitation needed.
Liv laid the baby in his swing, as he was now fast asleep, and gestured towards the couch. "Please have a seat Barba."
"I know I probably really freaked you out with that call, I'm sorry for that."
Freaked out didn't even begin to explain how Olivia had felt. The last time she had gotten a call during or after a trial had been from William Lewis himself when he escaped from prison. Nothing had been more terrifying than having a serial rapist and murderer, who had a vendetta against her, out free. And now knowing that there was again another matter involving a psychotic criminal, it had put Olivia and all of her post-partum hormones over the edge.
"You could say that." Liv told him.
Barba sighed. He knew that there were other more important things happening in Olivia's life, but he needed her to know as soon as she possibly could. "I really didn't want to bother you, but it's important and I didn't want you finding out any other way or from any other person."
"No, I understand that." Olivia assured him. "But can you tell me what it is?"
"We got a call this morning about an incident in the yard at Ricker's involving Sutton and another inmate." Barba started. "I would have called you sooner, but we didn't find out what actually happened until later today."
Olivia could feel her chest tighten as he spoke to her. Lewis had gotten free after being transferred from the prison to the hospital, if something had happened to Sutton that took him to the hospital, there was a good chance that he would try to make the same escape as his mentor.
Her hands began to shake and there was a slight tremble in her voice when she tried to talk. "You know, I'm not sure if I can handle this."
Barba could hear the fear in her voice, it was such an obvious change from Liv's always calm and cool demeanor. "Oh no, Olivia, I promise, you can handle this."
When Olivia opened her mouth to tell Barba he could continue with what needed to be said, Judson let out a cry that was much louder than anyone would expect to come from such a small person.
"Excuse me." Olivia got up from where she sat and took the baby out of the swing. The infant's screams ceased almost immediately after he was back in his momma's arms and Liv returned to her spot across from Barba.
"You know, I guess I haven't seen you, but congratulations." Barba stared at the tiny human Liv was holding. It was funny to him, Olivia had always been Detective and Sergeant Benson, a strong, demanding force, and a serious bad ass, but now he watched her with her son and it was such a change. But a good change, he thought, she deserved something that was unrelated to pedophiles and rapists and murders, something that would make her happy after everything she had been through.
"Thank you." Liv let a soft smile cover her face in that moment. Anything related to Jud made the new mom happy.
"Umm… wow, nothing changes the subject like a hardened criminal, does it?" Barba could feel both his own demeanor and Olivia's change when he brought Sutton back up.
Liv sighed. "Yeah, I guess it does."
Barba took a deep breath and started back in on Sutton. "So, we got the call this morning, I did and your team did, too. Apparently, Sutton had tried to start something with another one of the prisoners and it got physical, of course. But the other guy happened to have a shiv in his pocket. So you can only imagine how that turned out. After breaking it up, they took Sutton to the hospital at Belleview. He had multiple stab wounds."
Olivia nodded, she felt like all if it was déjà vu.
"But umm… He didn't make it, Liv."
The Sergeant did a double take in her mind. "Wait… didn't… didn't make it?"
"He died almost right after arriving at the hospital."
"Sutton is… he's dead?" Olivia asked him.
"He's dead, Liv."
"Does this mean… What does this mean?" Olivia couldn't believe what she had been told.
"It means that there will be no more trial. You won't have to finish testifying, nothing, it's all over Liv." Barba had never realized how great it could feel to tell someone about another person's death.
"It's really over?"
Barba laid a gentle hand on her shoulder. "It is all over, Olivia. He got what he deserved."
Without even realizing she had been holding it, Liv let out long breath. Sutton was dead and it was the last thing she had been expecting. But it was also, quite possibly, some of the best news she had ever received. All the extra weight that had been dragging her down, instantly lifted from her and she felt an instant release.
"Thank you, Barba." Liv was so grateful for the DA.
"It's nothing Liv. I didn't do anything."
"Didn't do anything? Barba you fought against this guy and William Lewis. You helped me find closure more than once. You have done more than you'll probably ever know, Barba, for a lot of people."
"Well then, I guess you are welcome." A grateful smiled graced the face of the typically stern DA.
For a moment the two sat there in each other's company. Both of them felt somewhat at ease with the way everything had ended. Barba was happy to earn what he thought of as a win for his case and to finally help Olivia find something similar to closure. And of course, Liv was simply thrilled to feel safe and to know that maybe sometimes the good guys still win.
An annoyed and loud cry from a certain baby, however, brought both of them back to reality.
"I'm probably going to need to feed him." Olivia said.
Barba stood up quickly from the couch. "Don't let me interrupt that; I'll get going so you can attend to the new man of the house."
"Man of the house if a very accurate description of this one." Liv chuckled, looking down at a very unhappy and tearful Jud.
Barba laughed along with her as he walked towards the door, reaching for his coat on the rack and grabbing his briefcase from the floor, even when the item wasn't necessary he found himself carrying it, almost like it gave him a sense of comfort.
Olivia stood in the middle of the living watching the man prepare to leave. "And Barba, really, thank you for everything you have done. It means a lot to me."
"Anytime for my favorite sergeant, Liv." Barba opened the door, but turned to briefly make eye contact with the woman. "Have a good night and congrats again on the little guy."
With exhaustion creeping up on her a few hours later, Olivia finally made her way to bed. Checking first on Judson, who was sleeping soundly in his bassinet, Liv slipped into bed under the covers. Now that she was finally alone and relaxed, she realized just how tired she still was and that she had been home for only twenty four hours from the hospital. Everything had changed in what seemed like the blink of an eye. In a matter of three days she had become a mom and was no longer a victim.
When she heard a small fuss from the end of the bed, where he son laid, Olivia jumped at the opportunity to snuggle her little boy. With Sutton no longer a threat to herself or Judson, she finally felt like she could enjoy every moment with the baby without constantly looking over her shoulder, wondering how much like Lewis Sutton was and whether or not he too would find a way to get to her one more time.
"Oh, my sweet boy." Liv cooed at Jud, who gurgled in response. "Your daddy would have loved you so much."
Every time she thought of Brian now, all she could imagine was what a wonderful father he would have made to their son, but if course he would never get the opportunity to do that. Though, now she felt like Sutton got what was coming to him and at least Brian would have been thankful to see the asshole, who took him from his family, brought to a little justice.
"I think we're going to be just fine, buddy." Liv admitted to herself. "Everything is going to be okay, just the two of us, Jud."
