Chapter 28
As soon as we clashed, I knew I was in trouble. Despite Zeros assurances that I could match him with the King, it quickly became obvious that that was a big fat fib. Or at least, inaccurate in this case. How do I know? Well, considering the gauntlet on my arm was now cracked with reddish glowing fluid leaking out of it was a pretty good indication.
"What now Zero?" I demanded as I drew my sword and forced Anderson back with wild swipes, "Hes clearly too strong for this armour!"
"Recalculating new information," said Zero, "It appears that the reason for the lack of projected effectiveness is due to the Holy nature of the Sacred Gear in question."
I ducked under a swipe from Andersons massive arm.
"So what, this thing is Demonic?" I asked through gritted teeth.
"Not exactly, but it has taken on a demonic leaning due to it being within you," said Zero.
"Great, so what do we do?" I growled.
"Dodge until I think of something."
"THATS NOT HELPFUL!" I yelled.
Unfortunately, it seemed that my anger was too much of a distraction or maybe Anderson got tired of playing. Whatever the case, the mass of thorns suddenly imploded and my armour was pierced in multiple places, including a couple that passed right through the cockpit.
"Automatic ejection active," said Zero, "Initializing self destruct."
"Wha...WHOA!?"
Before I could react, I was yanked back and spat out the back of the mecha, right before it exploded.
"Ow, that hurt," I groaned as I pried myself out of the me shaped crater I'd left in the ground, "Did we get him?"
My answer came in the form of a massive, thorny arm that nearly crushed me.
"GOD DAMN IT!" I roared as I took to my heels and sprinted through the streets, making it a point to stay well away from where Sam and Jake were fighting it out.
"REN, GET DOWN!"
I instinctively hit the deck, just as a beam of light shot over my head and sliced off one of the Monsters arms.
"Huh, nice shot," I said as Irina landed beside me, "So I take it you beat Freed?"
"Yeah, a heathen like him was no match for my Holy might!" said the Angel, "Now I can help you with him."
Before I could react, she took off and flew towards the rapidly regenerating monster with her Excalibur held at the ready.
"Wha...NO, IRINA, DON'T!" I shouted.
To late. While Irina was much too quick and agile for the Monsters clumsy limbs to hit, the individual vines that made up its form were another story. True, each one was at least the size of my arm around, but they were more than quick enough to catch Irina out. The Angel yelped as one of them managed to snag her leg, before that yelp became a scream of pain as more erupted and started lashing her mercilessly, quickly turning her pure white wings red.
"LET HER GO!" I roared, summoning a huge amount of flame around my sword and releasing it in a surprisingly strong blast of fire that disintegrated the vines holding Irina.
Before the Monster could grab her again, I activated my Knight armour and poured on the speed, catching Irina and getting her to safety before she could be harmed any more. I skidded to a stop inside one of the few remaining buildings that were standing and gently lay Irina down on a clean patch of floor. She was in terrible shape, the cruel thorns of the Monster having torn her flesh to ribbons. Her leg was broken, as were her wings and most of her feathers were gone. I gritted my teeth. I'd had it. It was one thing to drag me to the other side of the world and force me into a death game, but it was quite another to hurt my friends and, Angel or not, Irina was my friend.
I stood and made my way back outside, feeling my fury roiling within me. I glared up at the Monster that was looking around for us.
"I've had it," I growled, drawing its attention.
"What was that Monster?" sneered Anderson, "Are you giving up?"
I ignored him.
"I was just getting used to my life," I continued, "Sure, it wasn't exactly normal, but I could roll with it. I could take everything that was coming and give it back with interest. I even relished the idea of adding more strong foes to fight...so long as they only came after me."
I looked up and glared at the Monster, my eyes blazing like suns.
"But now...NOW I'M PISSED!" I roared, "I'M THROUGH HOLDING BACK, I'M THROUGH TAKING IT SAFE, HELL, I'M EVEN THROUGH WITH MAINTAINING THE TIMELINE! IF IT MEANS MY FRIENDS ARE HURT, THE TIMELINE CAN GO SCREW ITSELF AND SO CAN THAT BASTARD OF A REAPER!"
CLICK.
I froze as I felt something inside me suddenly shift. It felt similar to the first time I'd activated my Sacred Gear or used my magic, as if something that had been sealed was unleashed. However, if those two events were like dams bursting and letting out lakes worth of power, this felt like someone had somehow released a galaxy's worth of power into my body.
My entire form lit up with a brilliant, golden light that rivaled that of Michaels wings and, for a brief moment, I saw everything. I could see Sam and Jake fighting further in the town, I could see Dean and Bobby rushing to Sams aid, I could see Koneko and the rest of my friends arguing with Azazel and Castiel. Then, it went further. I could see the Underworld, Heaven, Hell and even Pergitory and out and out and out, past Mars and the rest of the Solar System, through the cosmos, past a multitude of alien ships engaged in a vicious war until my perception left the Galaxy entirely. And yet, it still didn't stop. Out and out, past Andromeda and beyond, even reaching past the edges of the Universe and into the shifting void beyond.
Thats when things got really interesting. It was like I was suddenly seeing an impossibly large bubble bath or something, with small (relatively) pockets of bubbles focused around what appeared to my senses, to be large, bronze coloured orbs. However, while I could see countless such orbs in the distance, I was unable to go any further. It appeared that I had reached the edge of my expansion, anchored on a particular orb bearing the name 'Dis Lexic'. I blinked. Wasn't that the name of that Watcher guy?
"Indeed it is."
"GAH!"
I nearly jumped out of my skin (metaphorically as I currently didn't have a body) as said Watcher suddenly appeared beside me.
"Hmm, interesting," he mused.
"Whats interesting?" I asked.
"The fact you are here," said Dis, "Then again, I suppose it does make a certain amount of sense…"
I blinked.
"Whenever you're ready to make sense…" I said, "What the hell is going on?"
"You are tapping into the ultimate power of the Outsider," said Dis, "You also happen to be the first to reach that level, fitting seeing as you are the first Outsider. From a metaphysical point of view anyway."
"Huh?"
"Don't ask, it'll just give you a headache," said Dis, "So anyway, I'm sure you're eager to find out what this new power is, right?"
I nodded slowly.
"Alright then, Outsider Mode is actually pretty simple a concept. It allows you to tap into the Outsider Multiverse and borrow your fellows powers."
I frowned.
"Whats that supposed to mean?" I asked.
"Well, lets use this as an example," said Dis, indicating to one of the bubbles that surrounded his orb. Immediately, we seemed to zoom in until my vision cleared and I could see what was below us. A large lake with a castle sitting on the hill and a massive, ominous looking castle beside it. I blinked at the sight.
"Wait, isnt this..?"
"Hogwarts? Yes. Now, can you see your fellow Outsider?"
I frowned and looked around. Down below I could see a group of kids running around the Lake, although they didn't appear quite...normal. One of them was swimming with unnatural speed, while another had dark green hair and a third had spiky blue hair. However, as I looked at the blue haired kid, an odd sense of familiarity washed over me and I suddenly became aware of exactly what his powers were.
"There, you see?" said Dis.
I nodded slowly, wide eyed at the feeling.
"Think of Outsider Mode as something similar to the Avatar State," said the Watcher, "While in it, you can tap into your fellows powers, past, present or future, and use them as your own. However, this mode is not something that can be controlled or tapped into deliberately, so don't try it. It is the Outsiders final defence to prevent themselves from behind destroyed and it is that power that allows them to survive where most would die. Now, thats all I can teach you for now, so tap into your fellows powers and kick that Monsters ass!"
I steeled myself and nodded.
"Got it," I said.
Dis grinned.
"Excellent."
There was a jerk and I suddenly found myself back in my body as if nothing had happened. However, I could tell that the Outsider Mode was still active because my hair had turned into what appeared to be a shifting nebula, my eyes were glowing like neutron stars and I somehow knew that my pupils had transformed into eight pointed stars. Apparently, I was just in time too as Anderson swung a massive arm, aiming to crush me in one shot. To bad for him, I had just the ability to deal with him. My eyes stung slightly as I reached across the multiverse and touched the owner of the power.
Across the Dimensional boundary, a young Leaf Shinobi suddenly stiffened as he felt something brush against his Soul.
"Is something wrong Sasuke?" asked the Hokage.
"No...its nothing," said the Outsider.
Back with me, I smirked as I felt the new ability activate, creating a spectral ribcage around my body that easily blocked Andersons attack with an equally spectral, skeletal arm.
"WHAT THE HELL!?" spluttered the Paladin, "What is…"
I was happy to answer the unasked question.
"SUSANOO!" I shouted as the skeleton rapidly expanded, gaining a second arm and a skull as muscles appeared over the bones as its hands slammed into the ground and seemed to push itself up, lifting me with it as armour began to form over its body.
Unlike the Full Body Susanoo depicted in the Naruto Anime, this Susanoo was clad in western style plate armour, with a winged helmet, a sheathed, western style longsword and a diamond shaped kite shield on its left arm, bearing a crest depicting six wings on the front in a circle that seemed to be hiding something. From its back emerged three pairs of massive wings that seemed to be on fire. Once again, I found myself stood level with Anderson, but this time, I had the advantage as the borrowed sword flashed out and cleaved off one of Andersons arms. He howled in pain as greenish fluid dripped from the wound.
"W-what the...I can't regenerate!" gasped the Regenerator, for the first time with fear in his voice, "What kind of sword is that?!"
"The kind that is your DEATH!" I roared as I swung the sword again, this time cleaving the monstrous minister in half.
Anderson let out a roar of agony as his Balance Breaker fell apart at the seams, coming apart into countless chunks of thorn that quickly dispersed, leaving nothing but an unconscious Anderson on the sidewalk. I let out a breath as I allowed the borrowed Susanoo to fade, even as I felt the massive power boost of Outsider Mode fade with it. I stumbled as I hit the ground, but was able to maintain my footing enough to get back to where I'd left Irina. Unfortunately, there wasn't really anything I could do for her at the moment.
"Man, I'm beat," I groaned as I flopped down against the wall, "I really hope Castiel finds us soon. I don't feel like dealing with Dean and Bobby right now…"
Apparently I should stop tempting fate as my sensitive ears picked up the sound of a car speeding up to the entrance of town. I groaned and peaked out the broken window, confirming that the car in question was indeed Deans Impala. I groaned again and stumbled to my feet, intent on preventing Sam from dieing. Hey, its basically what sets off the entire debacle for the rest of the series, so if I can prevent that…
"REN!"
I barely had time to react before a small missile impacted my stomach, knocking me onto my back with Koneko wrapped tightly around me, sobbing into my chest. I blinked in complete bewilderment, before I realized that my girlfriend, along with the rest of the crew, had just teleported in behind me.
"Man, you sure look like you took a beating," said Azazel with a smirk.
I flipped the Fallen One off as Asia hurried to Irinas side to start healing her with a worried looking Xenovia accompanying her, while Rias hurried over to me with Sirzechs following a tad slower.
"Are you OK Ren?" asked my Master without preamble.
"I'm fine, for once," I said, "Just really worn out."
Then I remembered what I was about to try and prevent and moved to try and get Koneko off so I could save Sam. Unfortunately, the scream of grief that rent the air a moment later put paid to that idea.
"GOD FUCKING DAMN IT!"
Em, I literally just wrote this in under an hour when I'm supposed to be in bed. I've been planning to introduce an Outsider Mode for a while, but haven't been able to figure out what it could do. Then I had this idea while musing about some other plans and it literally took me by the lapels and wouldn't let me sleep until I wrote this.
I hope my explanation of Outsider Mode makes sense because I literally can't think of any other way to put it. It is a VERY situational weapon though and not one he can reliably call upon. It requires him to basically accept that he's going to bone the timeline one way or another. The Outsider he tapped into this time was Sasuke from Breaking the Curse.
And with that, I'm done and going to bed. Hopefully I'll be able to do more work on this now I've broken through the writers block that was causing me trouble...eh, make sure you review!
