It had been about a week since the fiasco at Scatter Canyon, since the last of the sirens had finally been entombed and kept at bay from invading Ninjago. A serene calm had swept over Garmadons Monastery.

No more frantic research about old Ninjago legends.

No more crazy searches for a lost brother who had wandered off for a night time walk.

No more… nothing really.

Not much could be done.

An eerie silence accompanied the calm.

Something had happened after the battle against the last siren…

And it had affected everyone.

After the battle, the group of brothers ran to their downed leader. Zane lifted the limp body of the black ninja, resting him slowly against the side of the pillar.

Everyone crowded around Cole, blocking out the sun, casting him into shadow.

His raven black mane of hair was plastered on his forehead with cold sweat. His skin was clammy, cold and pale. His hands had severe burns on them from where he had touched the wall of the unknown tomb. They were red raw and had small streams of blood flowing from the deeper wounds.

His ninja garb were ripped in places and also smelt of burning.

His chest neither rose, nor fell. He wasn't taking a breath.

Zane lifted his wrist, inspecting for a pulse whilst his hand fell forward limply.

The snowy ninja stayed silent and showed no emotion through his wooden like face.

Jay was staring down with tears bordering his eyes. "Zane," His voice shook wildly. "Is Cole okay?"

Zane sighed, abandoning his calm demeanor. "I… am not quite sure…"

Kai let the rest of his anger bubble to the surface. "How can you not know?" He shouted.

Zane didn't flinch at his brothers reaction, "He seems to be breathing but… my scans indicate the lack of a pulse."

Lloyd stepped forward, "If he's breathing, he's alive. We need to get him back to the Monastery."

No one argued with the green ninja. Kai and Zane carefully lifted Cole up, off the hot sands of the canyon. They each slung an arm over their shoulders to make sure that Cole didn't carry his own weight.

Cole did weigh quite a lot, but to the worried brothers, he was as light as a feather.

They carried him the long way back to the Monastery.

Now, days later, the team leader was in a stable state. He had spent the first lot of days in bed, recovering very slowly from his injuries.

He never moved an inch, his unconscious, weakened body didn't have the energy to spare.

Zane had made it his objective to assure that Cole was well at all times. For the days that Cole was in bed, Zane didn't rest once. He was up all night and the day that followed.

Zane's POV

I sat in a chair at the side of Cole's bed. Our black garbed brother lay on a pile of cushions, elevating his burnt arms and keeping his head propped up. A thick duvet was lain over his still form, keeping the last of his warmth in his body.

Anyone who may have looked at Cole would think that he was… long gone, but I knew different. Each day Cole showed signs of improvement, maybe it was deeper intakes of air or the slight flutter of his eyelids, but it was always something more than the day prior.

Today Cole had started to slightly move his fingers on his right hand.

It was a petty thing to be happy about.

But it showed that Cole was soon to wake up.

Sooner than I had expected.

I was about to leave Cole's side for a short while, in order for me to stretch my strained back and maybe see how each of my brothers were doing.

But a groan echoed from the bed.

I turned around with hope, a smile growing on my face.

"Hey, Zane. You better have not been watching over me for he past few days," Came a small whisper. "Because according to the date on this clock, i've been out for a while."

I walked to my brothers side. "You should not be talking so much, it would be a strain on your body."

Cole laughed weakly. "Maybe, but I'm the one who gives orders. As the leader, it is my duty."

He tried to sit up in his bed. I placed a hand onto his shoulder and pushed him down lightly. "Do not sit up brother, you do not have the energy." I negotiated.

Cole sighed slightly, but it turned into a heaving cough. It rattled through his body, making him gasp for breath.

I frowned slightly, worriedly looking to Cole. "Are you alright brother?"

Cole lay back, resting his head on the pillows that were placed there. "I'm… fine Zane." Cole gasped. "Don't worry about me."

I sat in a clear space on Cole's bed, "I must worry about you, you are my brother. You would worry about me if I were in your position." I answered, pulling the quilt over Cole.

"You must rest, Cole. You will recover faster." I said, falling silent so Cole could get to sleep.

Cole gave the first sincere smile I had seen him do in a while. "I will soon. But first, could you tell me what happened with Emily and I, my memories are a little fuzzy."

I returned myself to the chair next to Cole's bed and turned so I was facing my brother.

"Of course, what was the last thing you remember?" I asked as I prepared to reminisce the story of Cole and the Siren.

I just finished my first story! OMO!
