Binky heard the sirens. They were a few blocks away but they were loud. He stepped outside and smelled smoke. He jogged over to the street. He was shocked to see a house burning. He could hear a mother screaming from outside. Her children were inside. Firemen weren't on the scene yet, online the police and an ambulance.

Binky was only 10 years old. He was bulky, big for his age. But he was strong. He ran inside the house while cops yelled for him to stop. He ignored them.

He could barely breathe because of the smoke. He felt along the wall. He learned on television use the walls to navigate. He crawled on the floor to stay out of the smoke cloud. He focused on the sound of voices. Binky crawled towards a back bedroom. Inside were two young girls. They were too short to reach the window. Binky stood and opened it for them. He yelled outside and two cops ran up.

"I can't believe you did that, kid," the first cop said. Binky coaxed the youngest girl into his arms. She was shaking. She coughed as Binky handed her off to the first officer. He went for the second girl. She was older but wheezing. Binky covered her nose with his sleeve. Then he lifted her into the arms of the second cops.

Firemen arrived. One of them helped Binky out the window. A beam in the living room collapsed. Binky watched from the street as the roof caved in. He didn't realize how dangerous it was to be inside a burning house. He just wanted to save the girls. They weren't there anymore; the ambulance took them and their mother to the hospital. Binky decided to walk home and see if his mom was at work. He walked through the door and saw she was in the kitchen making lunch.

"Binky, you smell like smoke!" his mother cried. "Ugh, and you look disgusting! Shower, now," she called, helping him into the bathroom. "Mom, I saved two girls from a housefire. I was hoping you were at work so I could know how they were." "Binky, you...you saved their lives?" "Yeah, so?" Binky shrugged, closing the door.

Binky's mom stepped outside. She smelled the smoke and heard the sirens. She walked to the house. Police were still there. They were searching for someone. Mrs. Barnes asked who they were looking for. The cop Binky handed the first girl to answered, "A little boy was here. He saved the girls but now we can't find him. We want to get his name and thank him." "Oh my god, what he said was true," Mrs. Barnes gasped. She sank to the sidewalk. The policeman thought she was ill and sat with her, "Are you okay?" he asked. "My boy. He's the one that saved them. I used to think he was so timid. He got moved to a new school this year and he was being bullied. He's only bigger because he's older."

"I'm sorry to hear that. What he did today was heroic. The older girl had asthma. Five more minutes and they would've died," the cop said. Mrs. Barnes cried, "I love my little boy so much now!"

The next day, Mrs. Barnes took Binky to City Hall. The girls' mom was there along with the mayor and city counsel. TV news crews were there. They were throwing a ceremony for Binky. They were proud of what he did. Binky didn't understand; he just did what he thought was right. But the town thought he was a hero. Even the bullies at school looked at him differently. Binky finally felt proud, like he could do something. He decided to do something with himself; he told his mom he wanted to be a firefighter. His mom smiled and hugged him tightly, "I'm so proud of you," she cried. Binky smiled. He was proud of himself too.
