Prologue

Laying outside one of the many high schools in Tokyo, Japan, grey eyes were locked on the large front door, muscles tense in anticipation. The sound of a bell ringing, had ears perking up and a large form raising itself from a laying down position. Heedless of anyone passing by, Shadow bolted forward the moment the doors opened, her form easily slipping between bodies and ducking under bags.

Tail wagging, the large black dog quickly located her companion and slipped into place beside her, nudging the hand that was within easy reach. Shadow gave a doggy grin as Kagome looked down with a smile for her before running her hands thru the fur on her head and neck. "Hey Shadow, good to see ya girl" Kagome said lightly with an easy grin of her own.

Trotting beside and slightly ahead of her human, Shadow kept her senses on alert, constantly watching the surroundings and very nearly darting forward to look into every alley they passed by. Shadow knew why she was so protective but knew that her human didn't fully understand it but put up with it since it had saved her in the past.

Shadow moved silently, despite the fact that she was unable to retract her claws she made hardly a sound on the pavement under her paws. Not paying attention to the conversation that was taking place between Kagome and her friends, Shadow felt her muzzle twitch as she felt one of the friends place a hand between her shoulders when she returned to Kagome's side.

Holding back a snort, she let it be as she knew that Kagome was less likely to keep a dog that was aggressive towards her friends around, despite having known the dog for four years. Letting her mind wander, Shadow reminisced on how Kagome had found her, when she was merely a puppy. She had been in an alley near the Shrine, her front leg injured and starving for food.

Kagome had found her and taken her in, showering her in love and affection. Shadow repaid the kindness with protection and a form of love of her own.

Laying down outside the well house, Shadow huffed out a breath of air, her eyes half-lidded as she waited for Kagome to emerge from the house in order for her to escort her to school. Her head raised slightly as she heard running feet moments before Souta, Kagome's younger brother, came running out of the house after the cat, Buyo. Shadow watched as the stupid cat bolted across the courtyard and into the well house.

Yawning, Shadow wondered what Souta would do as the young human stopped outside warily. She twitched her muzzle in amusement as she saw him glance at her for a few seconds in contemplation before he seemed to dismiss the idea of calling her. She wouldn't have answered him anyway, she only ever obeyed Kagome.

Speaking of Kagome, Shadow perked her ears as the girl finally emerged from the house, ready to head to school. Huffing out a breath as she watched Souta waylay his sister into looking for the cat, Shadow heaved herself to her paws and followed after her. Walking down the steps after her human, she settled herself beside the well and waited for Kagome to find the cat.

A scent of something passed her nose followed by the sense that there was something watching them, Shadow felt her hackles raise as she stood up. Her muscles were tense and ears perked in alarm as she scanned the area, looking for any and all threats. She heard footsteps a moment before she felt Kagome's hand on her head "what's the matter Shadow?" her human asked. Growling in displeasure, Shadow scanned the area once more but couldn't pinpoint any reason for the scent or sense of presence.

Shadow turned and gently nudged Kagome towards the door, wanting her human away from the well house as quickly as possible. They had barely taken two steps away from the well, Kagome's hand gripping her collar, when something grabbed the girl from behind and pulled her into the well. Shadow let loose a yowl of surprise before she twisted and latched her teeth into her humans shirt.

She wished that she could help her human as she heard her screaming in fear but couldn't very well do much. A flash of blue light swallowed the two of them along with whatever had grabbed Kagome followed by a feeling of weightlessness. Looking around, Shadow growled as she spotted a centipede creature keeping a tight grip on Kagome, screaming "the jewel! Give me the jewel!"

Letting loose an aggressive bark, Shadow lunged forward and snapped her jaws closed over the creatures shoulder, a growl vibrating thru her entire being as the creature started screeching and thrashing, letting go of Kagome in the process of trying to get Shadow to let it go. Shadow let loose a howl as her human disappeared from sight, causing her to lose her grip on the creature and disappear herself.

Shadow huffed in annoyance as she reappeared at the bottom of what appeared to be the well, Kagome right beside her. Sitting up, she looked up and spotted stars, letting her know that they were not in the well-house anymore. She grumbled as she realized that it would be an uncomfortable next few moments as they figured out how to get out of the well, especially with her.

After what seemed like hours, Shadow stood next to the well, shaking out her fur, dislodging the vine harness that Kagome had made in order to haul her up. She was just glad the vines had held long enough for her to be pulled up and out of the well. Looking around, Shadow felt her excitement curl in her belly as she took in the scents and sights, realizing in a moment where exactly she was. She was home.

Pushing those thoughts away for the moment, she focused on the immediate issues, including the incoming villagers who had obviously heard something and had come to investigate. She moved herself so that she stood in front of Kagome as the villagers emerged armed with few actual weapons and a handful of farming tools.

Shadow waited for them to make the first move, though she wished she hadn't as the villagers rushed forward and grabbed Kagome, tying her human up with ropes. Shadow growled as they wrapped a noose around her own throat and pulled her away. Turning with her fangs bared, Shadow locked her gaze onto the human holding the noose and took a step towards him, intending on eliminating him.

She froze a moment later as Kagome caught sight of what she was doing and screamed out "Shadow no!" Whining, Shadow turned her gaze to her human and could only watch as they were both dragged to the village. When they arrived, Shadow growled as she was tied to a tree while her human was taken to a hut. Pacing back and forth, she let loose growls every now and then, her gaze locked solely on the hut, intent and focused on where she wanted to.

When Kagome finally emerged, Shadow was happy and let loose a bark. She forgot about the rope and tried to lunge forward, only to yelp and be pulled backwards and end up on her side gasping for air around the noose. She heard footsteps a moment before she felt gentle hands soothing her sides and extracting the rope from around her neck.

"Easy girl, it's okay, you're okay" Kagome soothed in her ear. Taking a few moments to breath, Shadow flexed her throat, relaxing as she realized nothing was damaged, only sore and aching from the sudden movement. Raising her head, she let loose a huff of irritation as she spotted a villager a few feet away holding what looked like a sword.

Deciding to let Kagome deal with him, she turned her attention to standing up and shaking her fur out and letting her tongue hang out of her mouth. She was vaguely aware of Kagome telling off the villager before he walked away, still casting uneasy glances behind him. Nose twitching, Shadow looked up at Kagome and tilted her head in question.

Kagome looked down at her "come along Shadow, we're not in any danger anymore" she told her before walking back towards the hut she had just left. Shadow stood still for a moment, looking after her human in thought before grinning and bolting after her, a sharp bark seeming to bubble up as she ran circles around her human before they entered the den.

Then their biggest adventure began.
