Seth's POV
The newborn sat stiffly in a chair by the window, the churning grey sky behind him, silhouetting his figure. Here, I might have imagined he was just an awkward boy, just as human as I had once been. But as Carlisle opened the door and he turned to us, the tart redness of his eyes met mine and those of my imprint. Impulsively, I hid her behind me, my heart beating fast. I felt the swell of the beast inside me beckon to be released, the stretching of my skin, the snap in my bones.
"Seth." Said Carlisle, and I blinked, breathing in, trying to remain composed.
Daniel turned, a bit too fast for human eyes, but remained seated in the modern leather chair that matched the one behind Carlisle's desk. Sitting on the ground aside from him was Emmet, whose dark auburn eyes kept a close eye on him.
"Evelyn," said Carlisle, moving into the dimly lit room, "come have a seat."
I grabbed her hand as she moved and she smiled with reassurance to me as she sat down in a chair three or four metres away from the newborn, on the opposing wall. I stood, ignoring the chair next to her, holding her hand as tightly as I knew she could bare.
After a moment of looking at her, Daniel spoke. His voice, now unrestrained, was undoubtedly smooth and gentle.
"I... am so glad to see you Evelyn." He whispered. I noticed how he didn't breathe, and the only air that escaped his lungs was when he spoke. He was so still, unnervingly so.
"I'm glad to see you too." Evelyn said, squeezing my hand. "Seth," She said quite suddenly, but I couldn't look away from the vampire. "Seth." She tugged on me and I blinked, looking to her. Her eyes were hard slate now. "Sit down, you're making me nervous."
"You should be nervous." I muttered and she sighed, pulling me down to sit beside her.
"Seth is right." Said Daniel, and my eyes snapped back to him.
"Of course I'm right. You tried to kill her." I tried to stop the onslaught of memories, seeing a dark figure pinning her up against a wall, teeth inches away from her throat. "If you so much as think of moving I'll tear you limb from limb myself."
"Seth." Evelyn snapped, releasing her hand from mine and linking her hands together in front of her. "Daniel, don't mind him." She murmured and smiled at him. It made my stomach churn. "How are you doing? Are you feeding well?"
He nodded stiffly. "I don't remember who I fed on before, but I know they tasted better than bears and cougars." He murmured.
"Could it have been... someone from the home?"
"No." He said quietly. "I ran away that night. Elena found me near the Sound."
Evelyn sighed softly. "I so wish you spoke to me or texted me. I could have helped."
"Evelyn." Daniel murmured. "It had been a struggle for me since before you came. It's not your fault."
"Even so." She shifted in her seat, rubbing her tired eyes. An overwhelming urge to pick her up and go home washed over me, to let her sleep away all this madness that surrounded us. I bit my tongue, crossing my arms. "It is what it is." She said softly, a sad smile on her face as she looked at him. "You must make the best of it."
"I will try." He said. "I... am blessed in the fact that Elena wants to help me."
She nodded. "She deserves a companion that can be there. She deserves someone to dote on." She glanced to Carlisle. "Is she here?"
"She's talking to Esme." Said Carlisle, who leant on his desk gently, his arms crossed. He wore a dark blue suit with a waistcoat- he must have just come back from the hospital. "She'll be along."
Evelyn, nodding, turned back to Daniel. "What is it... that you wanted to talk to me about?"
Daniel watched her, his piercing eyes almost glowing in the dark.
"Are you happy?"
The question was sudden, and Evelyn sat back for a moment. "I am."
He glanced to me. "You are happy with the werewolf?"
"Shapeshifter." I hissed but he looked back to her.
Evelyn nodded, and I felt my heart swell up a bit with pride.
"I am so incredibly happy with the werewolf." She said and I sighed. Daniel smiled a bit at that and I hated it. "Daniel, you will be okay."
"I think... with you not hating me, I will be." His smile flickered to something more warm, perhaps a remnant of his human life, but it quickly faded. "One day, when I am strong enough, I would like to take a walk with you like we once did."
Her eyes moistened and she nodded. "I would like that too."
Sadly, he looked down to his marble hands. "It would be best for me to leave now."
"It would be. I'm... so sorry, Dan."
He looked up to her, giving her a sad smile. "Never be sorry for anything, Eve."
That tore through my heart and I swallowed, gripping the chair tightly. Her hand took mine again, to try and calm me down. She looked to Carlisle, and he nodded. I stood, pulling her up to my side, away from the vampire and marched out of the room. I pulled her into my arms without a second thought, and she gasped, looking around to the door as I jogged down to the stairs.
"Seth-"
"I'm not sorry." I snapped, unable to stop myself, stepping downstairs and into the backyard within moments. Once we were near the river, I let out a sigh, setting her down on her feet.
"Jeez." She muttered, straightening her dark grey jeans, giving me a look. "Honestly, I'm not some china doll Seth."
"You are human. He's a newborn, he's stronger than me, how could I not be tense?!" I barked, and instantly regretted it. Evelyn, however, sighed softly, moving over and abruptly reaching up to kiss my cheek, gently hugging my neck.
"Don't be afraid. I'm alright." She said in that soothing voice that had coaxed me out of anger many a time. She was the only one that could do that. Jacob tried, but Evelyn was above him. Her voice was above an alpha to me. Whereas it scared me sometimes how obedient I was to Jacob, it didn't scare me at all when it came to my imprint.
I breathed in the scent of her neck, my arms around her, assuring myself that she was perfectly fine. I could feel her heart thudding against mine, so rapid for a being so small. Her blood rushed through her veins, and oddly it comforted me.
The smell of an unfamiliar vampire made my eyes open and I glanced around, recognising the slight, fair headed woman who stood up the bank a bit from us. She was wearing grey clothing, and it made her even more pale than she already was. It made my heart jump. She looked so much like Evelyn that it was unnerving.
"Elena." Eve said, and the vampire smiled, light collecting in her burnt orange eyes. She was beautiful, in a renaissance painting kind of way. It was like some master painter had spent years creating her to be perfect. Again, unnerving. But I suppose all vampires were like that.
I swallowed; my hand tight on Evelyn's arm as she gestured to move. A flicker of hurt entered the vampire's eyes and she pressed her lips together, her smile turning morose.
"Seth, I have been a vampire for almost two decades now. I've surrounded myself with humans from the beginning. I have been in Evelyn's shadow her entire life. I would never hurt her."
"You still feed on them." I muttered, and she shifted uncomfortably.
"I have a mixed diet as of late. I haven't fed on a human since before Evelyn came to my house." She looked to Eve. "The person was dying anyway, I wouldn't-"
"Enough." I mumbled, turning to my imprint, crouching down a bit to look her in the eye. Her irises gazed back at me with a hint of curiosity that I loved so much. "Eve." I said softly. She smiled, a hand reaching up to my cheek.
"If you love me, you will trust me." She murmured. I swallowed, closing my eyes and leaning ever so slightly into her palm.
"I do trust you Eve." I whispered. I felt her lips brush against my forehead and my eyes opened.
"And I love you." She said, her words ever so simple, and her hand left my cheek as she stepped back.
"I'll stay close." I warned, straightening as she moved to embrace Elena. The vampire nodded to me before beaming at Evelyn. I sunk back to sit awkwardly on a boulder by the river.
I tried to block out their voices, not wanting them to think I was intruding. Instead I listened to the gush of water, remembering glints of summer memories when I would go white water rafting in canoes we borrowed from Old Quil. It had been before I met Evelyn, which felt like a very long time ago.
"You're growing up Seth." Said a familiar voice, and I didn't have to look over to know that Edward was sitting next to me. I heaved a breath, looking behind me to see Evelyn laugh with Elena as they walked slowly by the riverbank.
"It was bound to happen." I murmured.
"She turns even lovelier every day." Edward said, and I smiled, watching her, feeling warmth within my chest. It was a strange kind of pride, to know that she was my imprint, that I was so lucky. Gazing over to him I couldn't help but grin a bit.
"Do you miss the incises of humans, Edward?"
He laughed, looking down to his white hands, shaking his head. "In ways I miss the thud of a heart, the breaths of Bella as she slept. But I will always remember them. Besides, I have Ness." He fiddled with the delicate silver ring on his finger. "Humans are such strange creatures." Said Edward, somewhat remorseful.
"One day, when I ask Evelyn to marry me, will you help me with the ring?"
Edward chuckled, his dark yellow eyes meeting mine. "Of course, and more, Seth. Anything. I'd pay for you to get married in Paris if that made you happy."
I rolled my eyes, sitting back and remarking the river. "I don't think that would happen, somehow."
"No, it won't. Evelyn's already planned it all."
"What?" I looked over, but he was gone. I gritted my teeth, kicking a rock. It wedged into a tree across the river. "Goddamn vampires." I huffed.
