File 03 : Welcome

Between the small, peaceful town of Namimori and the capital Tokyo lies the almost forgotten town of Gokuyo. The town have seen its prosperous and thriving day when an ambitious entrepreneur opened a theme park that used to symbolise the glory of Japan Economic Boom. However, with the bubble and economic decline, the park fell into obscurity, and so did the town of Gokuyo.

Apart from the theme park , the region is arid and not good for agriculture, so most people prefer to live in the more prosperous Namimori or the capital Tokyo. The town is therefore almost uninhabited. By civilians, to be exact.

While to the civil world, the town is a symbol of decay. To the underworld, it is a breeding ground and a mecca for delinquents. Also, home to the infamous Gokuyo High, where broken teenagers got easily lured into delinquency and beginning their rite into yakuza and mafia.

The theme park, once the town's symbol of glory, is not yet demolished and now serves as a HQ for the up-and-coming new Clan, the Rokudo. Their leader is...

"Rokudo Mukuro..."

The man with said name froze as he heard someone called his alias– no one knows his real name– behind him. Deciding not to even spare his intruder a look, he remains facing the window.

"For the leader of a clan with growing influence like you, your guard sucks," the voice continues insultingly.

"Well, you're the guest we are expecting after all," Rokudo Mukuro turns around to face his intruder.

"So what do you want?"

"That would be ¥7,XXX, sir. Thank you."

The brown-haired newbir cop sighed deeply as he reluctantly handed his bills. It had just been his first day and he had already 1) met a infant superior 2) almost got shot 3) learnt that he would succeed the Director 4) forced to cross-dress 5) seen his colleague bloody in the toilet and so on... Not to mention he had to use his money for his colleague's medical bills in advance. He's starting to...

"Hate this job already, yeah?"

The brunet almost said 'yeah' and then realised that was not his inner voice.

"Devil Bra— I mean— Chief Reborn!"

He then felt a hard kick on his head and a mumble of "Newbies are so disrespectful these days..." His chief then flashed him a smile that promised pain, "well, luckily we're in a public place right now. Otherwise, your corpse wouldn't look human."

Tsuna laughed dryly at that. Wait, did he just get mind-read again?

Then his devil-from-hell superior said the unexpected, "I'll pay in your stead. Just head back to the HQ now. Otsukare (Good job)."

Not wanting to deal with the unpredictable chief anymore, Tsuna quickly said "Otsukaresamadeshita (Thank you, sir)" hoping to grab his stuff and have a nice PRIVATE time in his bath at home after a long day.

But heaven was not on the newbie cop's side as he entered the office.

He was greeted with...sparklers and party ribbons

Puff!

"Inspector Sawada Tsunayoshi, Welcome to D.E.C.I.M.O!"

The said inspector only laughed dryly. To be honest, he's happy with everyone's friendliness. But he'd be more up to it had he not be so tired. Yeah, last time he checked it was like 4 A.M on his watch!

"Ha ha, Otsukaresama, Tsuna!" the grinny cop, Yamamoto – he thinks – suddenly hugged his sholder in an overly friendly manner.

"Ha ha," the newbie laughed dryly, "Otsukaresamadeshita"

"We're really sorry that you have to work long hours!" the Haru girl he met this morning bowed in apology, "D.E.C.I.M.O is the busiest department but understaffed so we have no choice."

Tsuna asked "So you're part of this department too, Haru-san?"

The black girl shook her head "No, there is only Yamamoto-san here, then the absent Gokudera-kun, then..."

"That's why we're EXTREMELY happy to have you!" said a loud voice that could break Tsuna's ears.

The brunet looked up only to see a crewcut hour guy. It was bleached, but had it been green it would look like... Well, he shouldn't be disrespectful to his senpai, right?

"Woah, Sasagawa-senpai! You're back!" the cop Yamamoto greeted his senior officer in delight.

"Yeah, Africa was quite fun! We ate anaconda every day!"

Another wild weirdo appeared.

Suddenly, the lawn– no Sasagawa-senpai– attention turned back to the new officer, "So your name is Tsuna, huh? You look so lanky~" with a disappointed look...

That got on Tsuna nerved, yeah right. He knew he is 'lanky' or as slim as a girl sometimes but he kind of hates people commenting on it. Pissed off, he forgot to hold off his sarcastic self, "Sometimes looks can't tell you everything, senpai. Lanky people may be more than they look"

That got his senpai interested, "Woah? That means you must actually guts! I challenge you to the ring!" The muscle-building officer was excited as he (could drag) someone into his passionate hobby.

Of course, without hesitation, Tsuna said "NO"

Twenty minutes later, the new officer was blushing red and smiling as if having just heard the funniest joke in his life. His hand on his seventh (or maybe more) glass.

"So, alright then. Meet me after work tomorrow, at the basement training gym, k?"

The blushing newbie replied in slur, "Okay, O-nii-san!"

His senpai laughed loudly, "Oh, I'm your onii-chan now? No one except my sis call me that so far HA HA"

The newbie cop woke up to the door bell with a very bad headache. Oh, he was really reeking of alcohol. Not caring about his unbuttoned shirts and the creasy clothes he walked the door with a pained face.

Opening the door with a slam hard enough to crush someone who destroys his sleep "What do you want!" he barked in the most irritated throaty voice he ever made with the a death glare.

"I'm very sorry of I destroy your sleep" said a gentle voice. The owner was a gentleman almost seventy dressed in neat and crisp grey suit with a matching grey fedora hat.

As he realised who it is, Tsuna instantly got over a hangover and made an instant dogeza, "D-D-Director! I'm really sorry!" Shit, this could get him fired on Day 2!

The old man, or the Director of Japan Metropolitan Police Office, chuckled, "It's ok. Raise your face. Mind if I have a brief talk with you?"

"To such a h-humble lodging! I'm very sorry, sir!" the brunet said handing his 100-yen cup of instant green tea.

"Oh, it's fine. Don't bother this old

man!" the director laughed off a his actions before saying almost in reminiscence, "You've really changed, Tsunayoshi-kun"

"It's thanks to you, sir" Tsuna smiled back. He was really grateful that he met Director Timoteo. Had he not met him he would still be living his old lifestyle in his family business...

"You must be very tired, working with Reborn-kun. He's like... that, but please understand him."

Tsuna sweat-dropped as he thought of his hellish chief.

"Anyway, Reborn-kun read your report about yesterday's incident."

Tsuna froze and his smile faded at being reminded of the incident. Now he knows why the director came all the way here.

After a pause to glance at Tsuna's reaction, the director continues "Who would expect 'him' to show up there out of all places."

Tsuna nodded and smiled sardonically, "Well, it was the first time I go against him."

Timoteo sighed, "I mean, if this sort of work is too hard for you then you can quit, but I wouldn't recommend it. Though I know you know it the best," the director stood up and patted the frozen officer's back, "Anyway, you mustn't let anyone know your history. Not even Chief Reborn.

"Understood..." then Tsuna remembered something. Crap, Gokudera! Tsuna paled.

"Well, then, Tsunayoshi-kun. No, it's Sawada now, right?" the director bid farewell before closing the door behind.

"Ohayogozaimasu, Sawada-sama!" his colleague bow almost on his knees at him, giving him chills.

"Erm, Ohayo," the so-called 'Sawada-sama' sweat-dropped at the 360-degrees flip of his colleague's behaviour.

"Woah, isn't this EXTREMELY amazing!?" a weird senpai with a loud voice remarked, "Right, Yamamoto?"

"Yeah," Yamamoto chuckled.

"Yup, for an arrogant officer who come from the very prestigious Hayato family who have served the enforcement since the establishment of Meiji government to respect someone. Way to go, Tsuna!" Did that chief just praise him? And wait, is Gokudera actually a bochama (young master)!? Well, that explains his cocky attitude. But wait does someone that famous know his super-duper top secret!?

That means... "Gokudera-s-san, we need to talk..."

"Yes! What is it, Sawada-sama!" said the bocchan with puppy eyes... err...

"Ahem," the chief clearly did not enjoy his subordinates slacking off, "That'd be for later. For now, I have work for you guys."

"HUHH?" everyone said in a disappointed voice.

Appearing with a board out of nowhere, Chief Reborn jumped on the projector to elaborate on the new mission. The headline went on with the cheesy "Save our country with your power of EXTREME friendship (*´꒳`*)" Which made every cop in the room shudder at the lameness.

"Let me explain this to the EXTREME!" Sasagawa-senpai then made his (annoying) presence beside the chief.

"You don't have to always add EXTREME to everything" Gokudera said with an eyeroll. But Gokudera's imitation of EXTREME was quite... extreme too...

"Shut up, Octopus head!" Wow, Tsuna almost laughed out loud but the damn chief was here. "Ok, let's begin. To the extreme. So I was in Africa these extreme past weeks." The slides then move to the picture of Ryohei looking like he's having extreme fun in Africa doing extreme thing and whatever. "We're having an extreme time catching anaconda and grilling them. Bunjeejump and Canoeing in Amazon was cool too. Boxing with the kangaroos was the best"

Gokudera eyerolled once more, "We don't want to hear about your fun there! Also, Amazon is in South America. Not to mention Kangaroos belong to Australia! I think you had your geography confused!"

Ignoring the arrogant officer, the officer who had been Africa- or maybe South America? or Australia? or nowhere? - continues, "Well, as you know, I'm in charge of tracing the underworld move abroad..."

"A job, so unsuited to you" Gokudera added.

"Just ignore the octopus head to the extreme, guys," Sasagawa smiled, "I found a strange activity of the Gesso with the Rokudo lately there."

"He found a record of large transporting of people into America and Australia lately, basically," Chief Reborn concludes.

"So you're saying that there could be a large-scale human trafficking," the usually cool black-haired officer made a surprising sharp conclusion.

"That's right, Yamamoto," Chief Reborn smirked.

"B-But! Chief!" Gokudera looked unconvinced, "There is no evidence that it's true. Besides..."

"The Gesso family has always had a clean record so far under the beacon of the new leader, Yuni. So it's weird to be linked to such a notorious Rokudo yaguza family." Tsuna made an observant comment, which took everyone in surprise. Not okay with the stares, Tsuna blushed, "Wh-What?"

"As expected of you, Sawada-sama!" Gokudera said in admiration.

"Well, if that's true then Japan will be in big trouble," a sexy woman voice came from behind. Making the previously confident (and cocky) silver-haired officer cringe crying "A-Aneki"

"As expected of the eldest daughter of the Hayato," Chief Reborn smirked, "The Rokudo are infamous for their human experimentation and human trafficking. If they were to expand overseas then it could tarnish our country's reputation."

"So this is pretty serious, ha ha ha" said a not-so-serious-looking officer Yamamoto.

Jumping on top of his office table, Chief Reborn then announced, "That's why we'll all cooperate together on this case."

Flashing the next slide, the chief described everyone's job, "Since Tsuna and Ryohei haven't worked together yet, you'll be on the same team. You're to interrogate the suspects."

Ryohei beamed brightly, "I'll be in your EXTREME care!"

"S-Same here," Tsuna said with a sweatdrop.

"But! Chief Reborn! Can't I work with Sawada-sama because we've already worked together?" Gokudera immediately voiced his discontent.

Chief Reborn only shrugged uncaringly, "You're to gather information with Yamamoto. You'll be in Bianchi's care."

"No~" Gokudera paled at his sister waving at him affectionately.

"So it was your first time going into an interrogation room, huh?" Sasagawa-senpai asked him, which he nodded too.

Noticing the nervous newbie, he patted the shorter officer friendlily, "Don't be so tense! It's nothing to be afraid of. Just observe me and you'll know what to do in a wink!"

Tsuna want to correct his senior that no one learn things in a wink. But as the metal door opened to a dimly lit room where there is a metal table with three chairs with one opposing the two just like in police flicks, the newbie officer was surprised to find who is in that one seat.

Before he could get over the shock, his senior whispered in his ear, "Just sit on the left and see how I do things." Tsuna nodded and tried to act indifferent.

He's a new person with new identity after all.

And he'll protect it with all his might.

"A–hem! You– Gamma –the Gesso, yes?no?" said his sempai in a broken English.

Yeah, he could see why Gokudera said he's quite 'unsuited' to the job.

"What if I say yes," the blond European said back in fluent Japanese, which surprised Ryohei, but not Tsuna.

Ryohei quickly changed into his beloved language of Japanese,"Well, then you're quite a thing. After all, you're Gesso boss right hand man yourself, right?"

The Gesso right hand man sighed as he wondered how someone like him got caught by the likes of Japanese police. Must be because he was in a hurry. He hissed, "Just get into the point."

Ryohei's eyes darkened at that, his voice also more solemn, "Is it true that you get involved with the Rokudo lately?"

"I'll not say anything" Gamma closed his eyes refusing to let anything on.

"Omerta, huh? Western mafia are so..." Ryohei sighed "We know your family record has been clean most of the time so we can let you go to do 'what you want' if you cooperate"

That got Gamma's attention. It's true that he needed to do something before just dying in vain behind bars. But he didn't want to break his silence code either...

His glance then fell on the by-standing weak-looking newbie cop. Well, if it's him, then it should be okay.

Right?

Meanwhile, in a large Japanese mansion somewhere in Kanto

"I'm back," a gorgeous blond-haired man who looks almost European only that he's wearing a traditional yukata and keta shoes walked through a big gate.

"Okaerinasaimase" A younger girl with long orange hair in a complementing blue yukata draped in red gold fish patterns came out to bow 45-degrees in greeting to her young master, "Master is waiting in the tea hall."

Her young master nodded and made a hand sign to dismiss the girl. Then he remembered something.

"Oh, Kyoko, I just found 'him' yesterday," the blond said as he walked away.

The girl named Kyoko froze at that before tears slid down her face. She quickly turned away to hide them from her master and dismiss herself.

The superior watched the girl's receding back and said as an aside without her hearing, "in a very unexpected place..."

"We would like to now make a extreme report!" shout a certain, ever-so energetic officer, glancing at the brown-haired newbie next to him.

"Erm... I, Inspector Sawada, will report my interrogation with suspect Gamma," the new officer is quite nervous to stand in front of everyone in his department, though as small as 5-6 people.

"Suspect Gamma specifically asked to talk with me alone."

"Seriously?" said Yamamoto cheerfully (and somewhat suspiciously). Chief Reborn raised his eyebrows slightly at that, and Gokudera greatly concerned.

"Y-Yeah... Even so despite Ryohei's absence and my persuasion, Gamma didn't really talk. Anyway, I am sure they have nothing to do with Rokudo! They are just scapegoated!"

"..." Everyone went silent for a couple of minutes.

Then it was the chief who broke the silence, "Inspector Sawada, we asked you to report your interrogation, not your opinion."

"S-Sorry..."

The chief sighed and turned to issue Gokudera and Yamamoto an order "Detain Gamma until further notice."

"Yes!" Both officers responded unanimously.

"W-Wait," the newbie panicked at his superior order, "He– Gamma-san– probably didn't do anything wrong!"

The greenhorn then received a death glare (which look more like a cute kid pout) from his infant inspector, "I said your opinion is not relevant here."

Everyone except Tsuna himself sweat-dropped and kept a distance from the angry chief.

"But my intuition is pretty good..." A bullet. Bang! "Erm, ok, I will now shut up..."

After teaching the newbie with a couple, the chief decided to dismiss them "Sawada, Sasagawa, Go have a rest."

"Y-Yes"/"Yes to extremeee"

As the brunet packed his stuff and about to head home for a rest (finally!), he felt a pat on his back.

It was Gokudera.

"Tenth," Gokudera said with a slight bow.
"What's up, G-no Hayato-san?" Tsuna is surprised to see his senior officer who is supposed to do OT shift today here.
"Just Gokudera is fine, Tenth, I mean Sawada-san. Erm I have something to ask you..."
Tsuna wondered what Gokudera would have needed from him. Then Tsuna realised. He was supposed to talk to Gokudera about THAT! "Oh, yeah, Gokudera, I really, really have something to talk to you!"
"Y-Yes?" Now confused Gokudera

"Can you keep my background a secret from everyone, even Chief. Okay?" said the junior officer with his best puppy face (just like how Gokudera used against him. Oh, how ironic).
"Alright, I will do whatever you ask of me, Tenth!"
"Erm, don't call me Tenth or Sawada-san then!" "No, I insist."
Thinking this will lead to nowhere, Tsuna decided to slip away, "See you!" with a lightning speed.
"W-Wait, T-Tenth!" Gokudera tried to stop him but he was too late.
He forgot his police badge on the table... But well, he is having a break now so it shouldn't matter, right?

Right?
Well, this is not Yamamoto we're takki Gokudera is one helluva a paranoid kind of guy when it comes to someone he admires, though.

"Please come back again~"
The brunet walked out the store with a takeaway bento and a bottle of water. As he was walking back to start his dinner, however, he noticed something in the alley.

"Hey, wimpy. Put up a better fight~"
"Why don't cha hand over your expensive wallet~"
"You foreigner must be ruch, riight~?"
"Hurry up or we will kill ye~"
"Do it, Bro~"

Oh my god, Tsuna thought. He just saw someone getting ganged up. A man, probably his age with messy hair, were surrounded by huge tatto-and-suit-clad rough looking 4-5 guys.

Should he just ignore this? Moral Tsuna went... he is a cop so he should do something... Then cynic Tsuna was like... 4 against 1 is a bit... It's also his break now... (The I Am now a Civilian Time) Moral Tsuna... But he is a cop!

Hey, can't he use the fact that he is a cop to rescue the poor guy?

So here goes Officer Sawada Tsunayoshi!

"Stop there! This is police! Assault on civilians is a crime!"

It actually worked... the gangsters froze... well for 10 seconds before they notice the weak-lookingness of the brown-haired officer.

"Tsk. About wimpy posing as a cop? Do you think we will believe a wimp like you to be the f*cking cop, HUH?"

Tsuna sweat-dropped at that. Well, luckily "I had a badge with me" so he reached for his... empty pocket?

Oh crap...
"Nothing to prove your police-dom right? You f*cker for fooling us!"
As Tsuna was about to get kicked, he reflectively evaded it by a hair's breath. "You are just lucky there. How about this?" A punch. And again Tsuna evaded it. This repeats for several times. The man's lackeys and the victim guy looked in confusion.
Tsuna then saw a decisive loophole to the bro boss's attack. This is a chance for someone of his body build to make an attack... while the lunch is about to be launched at him... 1...2...

"Tsuna!"
Getting distracted, Tsuna missed his timing and landed his face right into the fist (ouch).

Everyone's attention is now on the newcomer in the scene (not the injured Tsuna. Poor guy...). The black-haired officer smiled genuinely as if he is not seeing a scene of crime but an old friend (how could he be so calm?)

"Would you please let my friend go," the man said with the most gentlemanly smiled.

"Huh?" The thugs made sure they didn't hear it wrong, "What did you just say?"

Now with a glint in eye, "Would you please let Inspector Sawada Tsunayoshi go. Otherwise, I'll have to arrest you on the ground of assault and resistance to cooperate with a public officer." The raven-haired officer then took out his police badge.

"H-Hey, Bro. He's not kidding after all."
"Let's run..."
Instantly, the four thugs fled the scene.
"You got hit, Tsuna. Are you okay?" the black-haired cop who was so scary a moment ago now smiled at him jovially.

"Erm, not really (Because of you!)" said Tsuna, spitting out some blood in his mouth.
"You forgot your badge. Gokudera was worried. I finished my OT early so I was asked to bring it to you."
"Thanks," then Tsuna realised, "Anyway, what about the victim!"
"Hm? Is there someone with you" Yamamoto was confused as he only felt Tsuna's presence in the dark. He is pretty good at sensing presence.
"A guy I was trying to rescue!"
"Didn't you try to rescue yourself?"
"No–"
"Erm... I'm here," said a voice in the dark. As the man stepped into the light, his fiery red hair and eyes became visible. His build is almost feminine (probably why he was targeted by muggers). Yamamoto was surprised why he didn't notice the guy's presence earlier. Maybe he is too worried about his colleague?

"Woah, a foreigner? Ha ha" the taller cop laughed (somewhat racist?) "N-No, I'm Japanese," said the red-haired man, fidgeting uneasily.

Tsuna sweat-dropped. He had to do something with the awkwardness his friend caused (before his friend asked things like you dyed your hair?) , "Er.. Erm, sorry for my friend! He spoke without thinking sometimes!"

Absent-mindedly, the red-haired said, "You know martial arts..." That is where Tsuna really thought this guy is weird. But he smiled sheepishly and said, "Well, I'm a cop after all I guess ha ha."

Looking at the brunet passively, the red-haired man shook his head as a sign that he couldn't care less, before saying "I'll be going then."

"O-Ok, be careful!" Tsuna said and waved an awkward goodbye to the man they just saved. Not a word of thank you? And it's not even on his duty that he helped him. Ah, well...

On their way back, the two cops stopped by a convenience store for breakfast (which Tsuna noticed to his deep regret... His morning shift will start soon...). Yamamoto went on about stuff like being a newbie cop is hard while patting his junior college gravity-defying hair, "Wow, what do you use to make your hair like this every day?"

As they were laughing, Yamamoto decided to ask something that has been on his mind,
"Anyway, I was curious why that Gamma guy would like to converse with you alone..."

Tsuna froze at that, which Yamamoto noticed.
Well, it does have to do with his background.. So Tsuna laughed dryly...
"Glare contest would be a more fitting description than conversation..."

Fifteen minutes have passed with complete silence. Shocked to see Gamma and ashamed, Tsuna was rendered speechless and deep in thought.

Surprisingly, it was the suspect who broke the ice with a sardonic smile, "Very surprising to see you here."

Not expecting to hear something positive, Tsuna looked up at Gamma with wide eyes before looking down in shame again.

"Erm... I..."

Gamma scoffed at the brunet's uncharacteristic shy and soft behaviour, "What are you being embarrassed about? This is not very like you."

"Nothing really..." Tsuna still looked down on the cold metal table.

It was an ironic situation where the inspector is looking down like a guilty suspect and the suspect is smiling genially.

"Anyway, who would expect you would pose at a cop this time. Ha ha!". Gamma was dying with laughter.

"That's not it..." Tsuna said in a serious tone, indicating he is not joking.

Noticing the cues, Gamma knew the boy was speaking the truth and he was taken aback. And the awkward silence reigned the room again.

Having calmed down, Tsuna decided to break the tension this time, "I'm really one now..."

Suddenly, Gamma made a 360-degree flip in his attitude.

"If so, I have nothing else to say to you."

His tone became harsh and cold. His face, emotionless.
What a loyal guy to his family and the omerta... Tsuna thought in slight admiration.

Knowing Gamma, Tsuna understood giving up would be the best option now. He sighed. He didn't like to see one of the few people he had good relationship with in the past to turn so sour against him. But, well, he made his choice.

And he is very resolved.

In the end, Tsuna decided not to tell his colleague about it as he would break his promise with Director Timoteo. His carefree colleague simply laughed it off and did not pry further, which he really appreciated.

Suddenly, a phone rang. It was Chief Reborn.

"Good morning, Inspector Sawada, Inspector Yamamoto" said the tyrannical infant -erm.. the great Chief as he saw who was entering the room.

"Good morning, Sawada-sama!"

"Hey, I'm also here, you know?" said Yamamoto with feigned sadness, which the silver head cop ignored.

Tsuna was surprised that both cops are still working there, "Guys, you're still working?"

"Yes! Since Chief Reborn has not left at all. We've been working overnight!" Gokudera explained, trying to appear energetic.

Tsuna turned to look at his small boss. For an infant like that to work so hard... He's actually a good leader?

"What are you staring at, Dame-Tsuna? Get back to your work!"

Maybe he's still an annoying brat after all...

Bang! "I can read your mind, Sawada."

"Yes, sir" Gone my mental privacy.

Ignoring his subordinate's offensive inner thought for once, Chief Reborn jumped on this desk and make an "Ahem, I have an announcement to make."

Everyone's attention turned to their Chief and a red-haired man next to him who suddenly appeared.

The man's presence seemed to surprise everyone.

"When did you-" Gokudera was surprised he couldn't notice the guy entering the room at all.

Tsuna was surprised, but for different reason from Gokudera, "Aren't you the guy last night?"

That intrigues his Chief. "Sawada, do you know him?"

Tsuna nodded but said "not really though. Why is he here?"

This might be interesting now that dame-Tsuna met him before but did not know his identity. Reborn smirked.

The red-haired man then made a courteous bow and introduced himself, "Pleasure to meet everyone of the Tokyo Organised Crime Division. I am the superintendent of Gokuyo region, Kozato Enma. I'll be in your care in a few weeks."

"EHHHHHHHHHHHHHH?" cried everyone in surprise.
