"Thanks, Danny. I appreciate this."
"I think she will love it, Sheriff. If she does not please let me know. I will make it to her specifications." I tip my hat, "I think we'll be keeping this one." I wave good-bye.
"Let me know how she likes it."
"I will," speaking up over my shoulder, "Thanks again, Danny."
We decided to save our money and not have an engagement party. All the traveling is wearing our budget a little thin so instead we are going to have a fish fry at the station that coincides with our annual Sheriff's Department open house on May 1st. It was Ruby's idea and Ferg has been stocking up on the fish from his weekend outings. His deep freezer is nearly full and ready for the party. There's nothing like a fish fry in our small town.
Cady and Vic made a couple of trips to Denver for Vic's wedding dress and the bridal party. I stay clear of everything and pretty much just say, "yes", call it smart survival mode. Vic didn't want to stress me out too much so I'm wearing the navy blue suit I bought in Philadelphia. Our wedding colors are navy, white and a minty green that Vic calls seafoam. I never saw seafoam that color when I was in the Marine Corp. Like I told you, I just nod and say yes but the truth be told I like it and she will be beautiful no matter what she wears.
A few weeks ago Vic moved in with me after we debated about it for a while and whether we should wait until we were married. In the end, Vic convinced me she wanted a test drive because she was never going to divorce, again. I agreed because I am confident in our doing well and if in the off chance there is something we discover that will break the deal it is better that we do it now and not after our vows.
Our life is good, better than good, it's great.
We decided to keep Vic's little house in town and rented it to a nice young couple just starting out. The rent pays the mortgage and the little extra we put toward the principal. When we have kids we will have something to leave them or as Vic says, if they are shitheads, we will sell the fucker and go spend the money. Only my Vic.
"Hey, babe you want me pack your bag?"
Responding to her voice, I walk toward the bedroom with the dishtowel drying my hands, "I will do it after dinner."
I slide in behind her and kiss her on the neck. She stops packing, turns to face me, and eases her hands into her back pockets, "Are you sure you want to marry me, Walt?"
I nod my head. Looking into her eyes, "Are you sure you want to marry me, Vic.?"
She nods her head.
I step closer and encircle my hands around her waist my hands at either end of the dishtowel. I pull her close and hold her to me.
"I love you with all of my heart, not part of it but all of it and it will be that way forever."
She holds her head to my chest.
"I love you, Walter and I am happier than I have ever been or ever could have imagined."
"Let's go eat dinner. I'll pack after we eat. We will be ready for tomorrow."
When all land in Philadelphia and we rent a car this time so we can have a bit of freedom. All of us take the trip; Cady, Ruby, Ferg, and Henry. I called in favors for coverage. We all stay at the Four Seasons hotel. Things have been better with Vic and her parents since our last trip. When Vic called Lena to tell her she wasn't pregnant they had a heart to heart. Sometimes it is easier on the phone, I guess, than face to face. In the end, Vic understood they were just scared for her and she really relaxed when Vic the senior and I came to an understanding; meaning he finally understood that I am the man in Vic's life and that I am a man.
"Are we going to keep our hotel tradition?" She asks in the elevator. My face flushes just a bit, even though no one knows what she is talking about. I put my hand on her side, "Yup."
Once inside our suite, we take our bath together, and make long slow sweet love. Afterward, we eat lunch and head to the wedding rehearsal. Vic and Lena decided the Merion Tribute House would be the perfect spot and after seeing pictures I agreed. The rehearsal was loud and rambunctious and full of Moretti's.
After the rehearsal, we have dinner and drinks at McGillin's, in my honor. The only Irishman in sea of Italians. It was rather wonderful especially since they had Rainier on tap and the Moretti clan has really warmed up to me. I'm sure it's because of the influence of senior and what Michael had to say. He's a good kid and I like him. I promised Vic I wouldn't overdo it and end up being hung over at our wedding then next day. I don't think she would forgive me nor should she if I did show up three sheets to the wind. She volunteered to be designated driver and stuck with club soda. She didn't want to risk anyone drinking and driving just before our wedding or any day for that matter.
Stuffed from dinner and drinks we all pile in the rental and head back at the hotel. Vic gets her things ready to stay with Cady in her room for the night. I guess we are keeping one thing traditional.
"It's going to be hard not sleeping with you tonight." Vic whispers in my ear.
"You will have the rest of your life to make up for it."
"I like the sound of that."
"So do I." I smile.
My fingers trace the length of her arm and I take her hand in mine. "I know some of what we are doing is tradition and some isn't but there's one tradition I wanted to keep. I have a wedding gift for you and I want to give it to you now."
She smiles, it's bright, and her eyes are glistening. I reach into my bag and take out the beautifully wrapped box that Danny put together for me.
Vic turns away and comes back with a gift wrapped box of her own.
"The paper is the same!." She exclaims.
"Danny Silver Eagle?"
"Yeah, that sly old man."
"Well, we know he can keep a secret."
We both sit on the bed next to each other.
"Ladies first."
Vic, slowly and carefully unwraps the silver lined paper and gently glides the tips of her fingers down the length of the black velvet box. She opens the box and I hear her gasp and her other hand immediately covers her mouth. The desired effect achieved.
"Walt!"
"Judging by your reaction you like it."
"Yes." She turns to me, "Will you put it on for me."
"It matches your engagement ring."
The necklace is made of 21 small horseshoes all set in platinum except for two, those two are in blue sapphire encased in platinum, and the center piece of the necklace.
"The two sapphire horseshoes belonged to my mom, Vic. My dad gave her sapphire horseshoe earrings for their 45th wedding anniversary. You know he was a farrier and horseshoes were a significant part of his trade. There's also folklore about horseshoes bringing luck and good fortune. Danny was able to recast the stones in platinum so you have something old, something new, and something blue for tomorrow. If I know my daughter you will have something borrowed tomorrow."
The tears are streaming down her face. "Oh, and Danny said the colors will make your seafoam wedding dress pop whatever that means."
"I just love that old guy I can't believe he didn't tell me."
I screw the posts together and it hangs perfectly on her neck it glistens on her olive skin.
"I love you so much." Her fingers rest on the sapphires, "I will always have a part of you with me. Your mom and your dad."
Wiping her tears, "Open yours."
I remove the paper with the same care Vic exercised and twisted the box open to reveal a thick raised silver bracelet. It's hand stamped with the same bear symbol as my belt buckle. Inscribed on the underside in Latin, "Amor vincit omnia, et nos cedamus amori." I smile and can feel the tears in my own eyes, "You quoted Virgil." Its a statement and not a question.
"Yup, I had a library card, too growing up you know." She laughs. "It's like the one the Duke had. You said it was cool one night when we were watching True Grit that's what gave me the idea."
"Love conquers all things, so we too shall yield to love." Our eyes connect. "He may have well written those words just for us Vic because I love you so." Vic slides the bracelet on my right wrist and it fits perfectly and compliments my watch.
"It won't get in the way when you draw your Colt, either."
Our kiss lasts what seems like forever and even then I didn't want it to end.
"You better get to Cady's room or there's no way we aren't going to end up together tonight."
"I know."
I walk her to Cady's room and kiss her outside of the doorway, my hands pressed against the wall just behind her head.
Her eyes are wide and expressive, "I have one more gift for you. Originally, I wanted to wait until our honeymoon but I don't think I should."
My eyes are focused as I wait for her to finish her thought.
She moves my hands and puts them in her own and presses them to her stomach.
"My other gift to you is here. We are having a baby. Doc confirmed the rabbit if dead for real this time."
Without saying a word, I kiss her lips then her stomach, and her lips again. My arms wrap her up and I don't want to let her go.
I whisper because I'm choking back the tears, "Is this what you want?"
"More than anything in the world."
"Me, too."
I feel the wetness on my cheeks and it matches what I see before me. My voice is soft but its deep, "I will see you tomorrow as you walk down the aisle. My heart will be bursting with love as it is now."
We kiss once more, my hand holds her face and she reaches up to wipe my tears she says, "Good night, my love."
"Good night, my life."
