A/N: It's the last chapter! Hold on while I wipe a tear from my cheek...
Anyway, lots of thanks to you all. Tell me if you want to read something else in this fandom from me! Now let's get on to Teddy and Victoire because it's a really important day for them. Let me just tell you...I took far too long trying to choose the colors. It wasn't even my ceremony!
Chapter 16
Teddy slicked his hair back in the mirror. He was changing it constantly in between his natural brown and his usual turquoise, unable to decide. Appraising his reflection, he sighed and began to go down a mental checklist. Hair combed, robes unwrinkled, bowtie straight, all his buttons were done up properly (something he'd had to fix three times), and his brown shoes were suitably shiny thanks to a quick Impervious charm.
"Ready yet?" James Potter poked his head into the room, grinning madly. His hair was combed and gelled nicely as well and, with a couple charms, it was actually lying mostly flat and in order. He slipped into the room and closed the door behind him. "Merlin, it's like you've been messing around with your hair for ages. Not getting cold feet are we?"
"Of course not," Teddy scoffed. James stuffed his hands in the pockets of his dress robes. He, like Louis Weasley, Albus Potter, and his best friend from school (who was a curly-haired Muggleborn called Archie), was wearing a nice set of light-colored dress robes with a pale turquoise bowtie and an orange calla lily boutonniere that matched Teddy's.
"Go with the turquoise, Teddy," James said. "We're not all matching like this for nothing. I mean, Vic specifically chose the color scheme so that you could wear your hair like that and not clash." Teddy nodded and his hair turned a shade of turquoise that matched the bow ties.
"How do I look?" Teddy turned to face James and waited to the onslaught of teasing.
"Sharp," James said simply. Teddy raised an eyebrow at him.
"Really, that's all you're going to say?" James contemplated him.
"Well I don't think you can morph the 'scared shitless' expression off your face. But I can't fault your dress robes. After all, I went to pick them out with you!"
"Have you seen Victoire yet?" True to tradition, they had spent the previous night apart. He hadn't heard a word from her since yesterday afternoon and he hadn't seen the dress she was going to wear.
"That would be telling," James replied. "I will tell you, however, that Molly and Aunt Fleur were crying together earlier."
"That hardly means a thing, anymore," Teddy said with a scowl, but he was secretly pleased. He had no doubt that Victoire would be absolutely stunning. He looked at his reflection in the mirror again, wondering how he could've ever deserved her.
Teddy was playing a waiting game now. There was still a good hour or so before the ceremony was to start and, while he was growing more and more nervous as the seconds ticked by like they were moving through molasses, James was growing increasingly bored. Sitting on one of the chairs without a care to the wrinkles that were sure to appear in his robes, James began to list all of the horrible hat choices various guests had made.
Both Teddy and Victoire had wanted a bit of a smaller wedding, but even with just family and close friends invited, there was going to be a good crowd of people. After all, the Weasleys had a large family, and 'close friends' included everyone from Hogwarts' Herbology professor to the Minister for Magic himself.
"We'll have a great security detail," Teddy had joked as he and Victoire wrote up the guest list. There would be at least a dozen current and former Aurors in the audience, not to mention the one who was getting married.
They had spent many long months wrapped up in more wedding plans than Teddy had ever dreamed of dealing with. There were matters to settle with the cake, the music, the venue, and the dress robes and that was only the tip of the wedding iceberg that buried itself deep into their accounts at Gringotts. Teddy suggested eloping no less than three times, but with everyone already knowing about the engagement and the wedding plans having already started, that was no longer an option unless they wanted Fleur to hate them for all eternity.
Still, as he walked around that morning, Teddy was happy with how things had turned out. Chairs had already been set up in neat rows with the aisle running down the middle marked off with turquoise and orange ribbons and flowers. They were going to get married just down the beach from Shell Cottage, not so much for tradition but for the beautiful location. The spring day was sunny and only a little breezy, ensuring warmth and no chance of rain.
"Oh, almost two o'clock," James said as he checked his watch. "We'd best get down there."
James led Teddy through the house, making sure the coast was absolutely clear from any blonde Weasley brides before escorting him down the steps and across the beach to where the ceremony would take place. All the guests had already arrived and were huddled together talking and laughing.
Teddy greeted a few people as he and James navigated through the crowd to get to the front altar where soon he would be bound to Victoire Weasley. Harry, who was in the front row with Ginny where Teddy's parents would normally be, gave him a big smile.
"Oh, finally decided to show up, Teddy?" Louis joked. "We thought you'd run away."
"Never," Teddy replied. He shook hands with his soon-to-be brother in law. Albus and Archie, his other groomsmen, greeted him as well before slipping back up the aisle for the processional to begin. Only James, as best man, stayed up there with him and the wizard who would officiate the marriage.
The officiator raised his wand in the air and music began to issue from seemingly nowhere, a light little tune that made everyone's attentions turn front. Silence fell and Teddy could feel the press of two hundred eyes at least upon him. James knocking him in the ribs with his elbow and gave him a look. Teddy suddenly realized that he hadn't been smiling and quickly endeavored to change that, lest someone question whether he really wanted to be married.
Fleur walked down the aisle looking radiant as ever in a pale pink dress, alone when she should've been joined by Tonks. Teddy and Victoire had toyed with the idea of commandeering Ginny Potter for that role or even Andromeda Tonks, but Teddy vetoed each option. He didn't want anyone to replace his mum.
After she took her seat, the groomsmen began to file in from the side so that they all stood in a line with Teddy at the front. They created a line, starting with Teddy, then James, Archie, Louis, and Albus. The bridesmaids, dressed in pale turquoise with bright bouquets, followed them to stand on the other side- Lily Potter, Roxanne, Victoire's best friend Naomi, and Dominique.
Butterflies erupted in Teddy's stomach, knowing who was to follow. If he hadn't been smiling out of nervousness at that moment, when he saw Victoire, he was suddenly beaming. There was a collective gasp of appreciation as everyone watched Victoire walk down the aisle, echoing Teddy's thoughts. She was absolutely stunning.
Her hair was done up so that light curls cascaded to her shoulders from a pretty bun. She had foregone the Weasley family tiara in favor of a few flowers tucked in her hair, and Teddy thought it suited her splendidly. Her dress seemed simple but, Merlin, it clung to every curve before dropping to her sandaled feet and swishing around her legs as she walked closer and closer at a steady pace, her arm wrapped around Bill's.
She gave him a shy smile as her father deposited her at the altar. He shook hands with Teddy firmly and went to sit by Fleur, who was crying already. Teddy took Victoire's hand with a smile and they turned to face the officiator.
As far as Teddy knew, he could've said a bunch of nonsense. In all honesty, he was too enraptured with the woman beside him to give much of a care what the grey old man said. He thought Victoire might've felt the same because they met eyes many times over the course of the long speech and laughed silently with each other.
Finally, the officiator asked Teddy to hold out his hand for Victoire and he bound them together for life, through all hardships, etc. etc. and on and on and he called Teddy 'Edward' yet again, which made Teddy want to groan. Teddy slipped the little golden ring onto her finger and started to feel rather giddy staring into Victoire's eyes. He was waiting anxiously for the last moment to come to finally seal everything.
"I now pronounce you husband and wife," he announced. "You may now kiss the bride."
"Don't mind if I do," Teddy murmured as he leaned in a captured Victoire's lips with his. Overhead, flower petals were falling everywhere and sparks were literally flying. He could hear raucous wolf-whistling, no doubt started by George Weasley. All Teddy cared about was the woman in his arms who was now his wife. Victoire kissed him back passionately, their hands cupping each other's faces. They smiled against each other's lips.
"Cheeky," Victoire whispered to him. And they turned to the raucous applause that greeted them as a new couple. Arm in arm and stumbling in the sand with the sheer joy of being together, they walked back down the aisle arm in arm between the people who were in equal parts crying and cheering.
A couple of the catering wizards instructed everyone to stand as they waved their wands and the chairs were rearranged around circular tables, a new dance floor spreading underneath. The music started, the food was brought out, and the party commenced.
Teddy didn't know how many people they must have greeted, but every time he thought they had gotten through everyone, there was someone new coming up and wishing them the best of luck together. It was exhausting work when all Teddy wanted to do was be alone with his new wife. He wondered if it would be rude to skip the reception, but Victoire wanted to dance and there was that cake they picked out to eat, so Teddy was persuaded to stay.
Before they lost too much light with the late afternoon sun hanging low in the sky, the wedding party and the Weasley family gathered for what must have been a thousand pictures. The groomsmen eventually divulged themselves of their robes, leaving only the bow tie and the shirt, and most everyone had taken off their shoes, enjoying the feel of the cool sand.
"The light's really pretty here," the photographer told Teddy. "How about a sunset one?" he indicated an area over by the edge of the water. Teddy grinned and took Victoire's hand, leading her down to the water.
"Mind getting a little wet?" he asked. She shook her head and together they splashed through the gentle waves until they were both standing calf-deep in the chilly ocean. They both shivered. It was only early September, but the water was less than pleasant even for wading. Teddy knew how to warm the both of them up and brought her to him in a deep kiss as they heard the camera snap away. They pulled away to light applause.
Soon James and the other groomsmen were running into the water as well, trousers rolled up to their knees. Lily led the girls' charge into the surf as well and soon everyone was sopping wet. Laughing as they all performed drying charms on one another, they headed back to the dance floor where Teddy and James were supposed to make their speeches and then the real dancing would begin.
"Hello, ladies and gentlemen," Teddy began, his voice magically magnified. He stood in front of everyone; the guests were all seated at the table enjoying the food. "First, I'd like to thank you all for coming out here to help celebrate Vic and my wedding. It turned out to be a lovely day, so I hope you all enjoy yourselves. You could even brave the water if you'd like. It's a bit chilly, though; I tried it already." There were a few laughs at that.
Teddy said all his thanks to various people who helped pull everything together and then passed everything over to James, who was obligated to do a best man speech, though Teddy was a bit apprehensive about what he would say.
"And now, here's the man who, when I asked if he would be my best man, only smiled and said, 'Mate, I'm going to give you a stag party to remember.' Without delay, here is James Potter."
James got up and hugged Teddy. His hair was ruffled from running through the water and he looked a bit disheveled.
"I've known Teddy Lupin my entire life," James said. "I've also known Victoire my entire life. Teddy's sort of like a brother to me and Victoire is my cousin…So…." He trailed off as people began to laugh. "I was told that this wasn't illegal, though, because they're not technically related by blood.
"I'd like to say I had a lot to do with this lovely relationship. In fact, I'll give you an example. On September 1, 2017, I caught them snogging on platform 9 ¾ and told everybody. Without me, they wouldn't have been plagued by every member of the Weasley family constantly asking how they were doing and when they were getting married and how many kids they wanted etc. etc.
"I'd also say that this relationship might've been meant to be from the beginning. I mean, they were playing with each other in diapers. If that's not the cutest thing, I don't know what is. And Uncle Bill, you always tried to protect your daughters from the horrible boys out there. But little did you know, that little scoundrel sitting half naked with your eldest daughter in the bathtub when they were toddlers would be the one to steal her away."
Teddy and Victoire burst out laughing at the sight of Bill's face.
"I know I'm supposed to tell a few embarrassing stories about Teddy, but honestly there are so many that I couldn't pick. Plus, I'm pretty sure he probably tripped over all of you at one time or another so you all have your own embarrassing memories of him. So, I'll only say that Teddy Lupin is a great man. As my dad's godson, he's been adopted into our family, and I guess he liked it so much he decided he had to marry into it. Welcome to the family officially, Ted, and best of luck to you and Victoire."
Teddy and Victoire danced for a while together to a slow song before Bill took over for him and Teddy commandeered his grandmum. She was beaming at him the whole time and had tears in her eyes and whispered how proud she was of him and how much his parents would have loved the ceremony. As the song ended and the Weird Sisters began to play, Teddy agreed adamantly with her.
As the day grew into night and the party started to wind down, Harry found Teddy and called him over for a walk along the beach.
"Well, this is romantic," Teddy quipped. Harry elbowed him in the ribs. In the background, he could hear the Black Keys' 'Howlin For You' and smiled to himself.
"You seem to be channeling James," Harry said. "I wanted to talk to you seriously, though."
"Oh? What about?" asked Teddy.
"A package arrived for you," Harry said. "It didn't come by owl, though, and looked rather suspicious, so I opened it to make sure it was safe. I didn't look at anything too closely and I certainly didn't read the letter but, Ted, it was from your father." Teddy stopped in his tracks.
"What?" he said.
"It was sent from Remus, all prepared in the past of course. I'm not sure what spell he used, but I'm sure Hermione would know. It's in the cottage waiting for you. I thought you should know before you went off on your honeymoon." Teddy nodded, lost in thought.
"Thanks for telling me," Teddy said. "Hey, if you see Victoire, tell her where I went."
Teddy hurried off towards the cottage without another word. He was glad that he had kicked off his shoes long ago because he was almost running through the soft sand.
It must've worked, he thought. He must've actually found the letter.
It seemed so long ago when he had traveled back in time and met his parents. It seemed a lifetime ago since the whole mishap was hushed up. Teddy had taken a dock in that month's pay for the laws he broke, but it went no further thanks to Harry's interference. Ginny had James suspended from Quidditch for a couple weeks and he ended up not starting during the first friendlies of the season.
Now, he was getting a message from across time, sent on his wedding no less.
He ran into the kitchen without bothering to clean off his sand-crusted feet. There was an open cardboard box on the table with Teddy's name on it. He opened it carefully and found inside an envelope and a tray of vials filled with swirling silvery vapor.
Memories, he thought as he picked one up. He set it back down though he itched to see what they were of. He would have to wait to use someone's pensieve. Teddy moved on to the letter and opened it with shaking hands.
Dear Teddy, it read.
I am writing this as you and your mother are taking a nap. You're only a couple weeks old, now, and it's rare that you're so quiet. I got your letter. You were born by that time, but it was still quite the shock. Your story intrigues me and saddens me deeply. I wish that I could somehow bring back those memories, but that is impossible.
Since you've said that you're getting married, I've decided to charm this letter to go to you on the day of your wedding. I don't have much, so this will be my gift to you. From your letter, I assume that I do not have much longer and since that is the case, I have decided to hide it from Dora (If I am wrong, we can laugh about this later).
My knowledge of marriage is limited. I myself have been married for less than a year. But I do know one thing; marriage is full of ups and downs that you have to go through together with your wife. You've entered into a partnership, now, so you must truly work together on equal terms.
I am happy with the knowledge that the world is a better place in the future and I hope that it stays that way. I know I've made my mistakes and I hope you can forgive me. Whatever happens, know that your mother and I love you so much and we will never stop loving you. Remember that we will always be with you in your heart. Looking down at you, so tiny, asleep in your cot, I can imagine the Teddy that wrote to me and I am so proud of him.
I can't tell you how much you mean to me, son. You and your mother are the family I've always wanted but never thought I'd ever have. Live a long and happy life for the both of us.
Your father,
Remus John Lupin
"I will, Dad," Teddy promised.
A/N: Oh my gosh. It's over! I actually finished a story!
Thank you to all you lovely readers, everyone who favorited, followed, and especially those who reviewed. You made this experience very enjoyable and I'm glad you all stuck with me through it to the end.
Maybe I'll see you again later? We'll see what comes down the road.
