There will small elements from Nancy Drew: Silent Spy (which I don't own, disclaimer here), but just bits of the storyline from the game, no actual characters from Nancy Drew will be present.)

Chapter Twenty-Six

"We All Fall Down"

The glass shattered into a thousand pieces.

Evelyn in the same second flung herself across the chair, tackling Lucas with all her might. The chairs tipped over, clattering to the tile floor and their bodies impacted with a painful thud. Showered in broken glass that glittered like diamonds in the light, Evelyn felt her heart hammering against her ribcage ready to burst out of her chest. Her hands frantically grasped at Lucas's face, a knot fear of wedged white-hot in her throat. Lucas reached up, grabbing a cellphone and gun from the tabletop before securing his hand around her wrist. The two of them stayed low, and crawled between the kitchen island and the counter top out of line of the windows.

"Are you alright?" Evelyn gasped, her trembling hands cupped his face. There was no blood and no wound, but it was not enough to quell the terror that coursed through her veins like ice. The crack of the bullet, the shattering glass, vision of death with her mother and Deacon's faces crashed through her mind, stealing all her senses.

"It's alright. It's alright. I've got you." Lucas wrapped an arm around her waist, tightly. "I've got you," he repeated, pressing a quick kiss to the crown of her head while his free hand dialed in a number. He pressed the phone against his ear, his brows furrowed into a deep frown and his jaw clenched tight. "Fornell, we've got a sniper. Where the hell is the security team?"

Evelyn could tell whatever reply was not a good one when displeasure etched onto his face. "We are pinned down. If we make an attempt to escape, we are likely to get shot dead. How soon can back-up arrive?" Lucas demanded, hotly. His jaw was set tight, and his eyes narrowed. The steady thump of his pulse that she felt against the palm of her hand made her breathing ease down and for her panic to ebb away ever so slightly.

"What do we need to do?" She whispered out, palm pressed flat against the cabinet. Her mind started to go through several different scenarios, and trying to unravel the best way to get them out of here. She reached up carefully to pull a knife out of the nearby drawer, feeling more steady with a weapon in her hand.

Lucas flipped the phone shut, and let out an aggravated noise in the back of his throat. "Security team is missing, and back up is about twenty minutes out," he informed her, grim-faced.

Evelyn frowned. She glanced at the three feet of distance between them and the hallway. It would give them cover, no visibility for the sniper to shoot them, but that three foot could be all the sniper needed to take them out. "If we can make it to the hallway, we could make it down into the basement. There is a secondary entrance there, and I have supplies that could be helpful," she replied, her throat bobbed sharply. Beads of sweat dotted her upper lip, her blue eyes were sharp and filled with shadows. "We have to assume they want us dead, or pinned down for a reason. We aren't safe here."

Lucas nodded, after a moment. "We are going to need a distraction. We knock out the chair," he pointed to the chair at the end of the counter along the breakfast bar, "and he'll assume we are heading that way. We will only have a slim window of opportunity."

"I know," she said. The two of them got their feet underneath him, and shared a long look, before Lucas kicked the chair down. Before it even hit the ground, the two of them lunged across the floor towards the hallway. Each sprint seemed to take forever, and her heart slammed against her ribs when the crack of a bullet sounded off behind them. She heard the impact hit the chair, and she held her breath in her throat until they both slid into the hallway. She turned around just in time to see a second bullet slam into the side of the threshold, splintering the wood. If she had been a split second slower, it would have slammed straight into her back. "This way," she breathed out, shakily.

She led them shakily down the basement stairs, and she only paused long enough to gather the bag hidden in the closet. Slinging the bag over her shoulder, Evelyn led him to the back door that led out to the yard and the forest beyond. "Unless the shooter has moved then we should have a clear path to through woods. About half a mile there is a cabin where I have a vehicle stationed, just in case," Evelyn divulged, chewing on her lower lip.

"You didn't tell Fornell that," Lucas said, quietly.

"I didn't tell Fornell a lot of things," she told him, with a pointed look. "All I am to NCIS and the FBI is information. If I gave them every bit of thing I knew, then I'd outlive my usefulness. You know how it is when you live life as a spy. If you ever want a peaceful life afterwards, you have to make sure that the people that you leave behind aren't going to stab you when your back is turned."

Lucas glanced away, a shadow like a veil settled over his eyes. "Let's go. Once we are safe, we inform Fornell of just where we are," he stated, tugging her along gently. The back yard was quiet, there wasn't even the sound of birds chirping, and Evelyn had unsettled feeling pool with an icy intensity in her stomach. She kept waiting for the other shoe to drop as the grass crunched beneath her feet, and when the pushed back the first line of trees, she knew their chances of being sniped increased the further they would push along.

"Do you think that Tarasov sent more than just a sniper?" Evelyn questioned, worriedly.

"Undoubtedly," Lucas replied.

"I was afraid that you were going to say that."

"We should proceed with caution," he said, raking his hand through his hair. He turned his head towards her, a knot of tension ran along his jaw. "Are you alright?"

"I will be," she answered, with a wan smile. Her spine stiffened, her hand grasped his arm when she saw something that didn't belong in the forest. She could make out distant shapes and the sound of footfalls almost soundless against the forest floor. "We have company."

Lucas growled, underneath his breath. "Stay behind me."

"But you don't know the way we need to go," she whispered, urgently.

His nostril with a deep breath, and he gave her a narrowed eyed look. "I'm not arguing about this. You stay behind me. Once we are past whoever is hunting us, we will then worry about getting to the cabin," he told her, his voice a low and raspy voice.

Evelyn gritted her teeth together, and swallowed down the words that bubbled up in her throat. She nodded, knowing that they didn't have to luxury of arguing this out. Mindful of the laser sights that drew every closer, they crouched to the ground and started to carefully make their way further into the woods. Evelyn wished in this moment that she didn't feel like Hansel and Gretel, being led straight to their doom. It was unavoidable to go unnoticed, they were too close, but they could get the drop on their would-be attackers.

Chaos happens in an instant. It doesn't happen slowly, or let anyone prepare for it. The second their paths crossed with the two men, dressed in black tactical gear and with long barreled rifles, it all went to hell in hand basket. It was a blur where gunfire erupted, and she recalled Lucas shoving her behind a tree. He used it as a shield, leaning around to fire shots back at the men. She remembers hearing a scream as one men fell down, hit by a bullet. Needles of fire prickled at her skin, Evelyn felt a noise of horror form a ball of knot in her throat and she threw her hand over her mouth to stifle it.

When the other man charged, Lucas grabbed the barrel of his rifle and shoved him to the ground. Lucas fought with him, and Evelyn felt indecision well up inside of her. She wanted to help, but she knew throwing herself into the fray could make things so much with the two men battling it out. The rifle went sliding across the muddy ground, and that's when hands wrapped around her from behind. She bit a startled scream, not wanting to make Lucas turn his attention away. One second would be all it took for the man to kill Lucas, so she bit back the noise of panic and fear. She flailed and thrashed violently. Her feet slipped uselessly in the puddle, and using a nearby tree root to steady her, she used the leverage it provided to smash the back of her skull against the man's nose.

He released her with a startled groan, and Evelyn whirled around with hesitation, burying the knife into the man's gut. She flinched back at the feel, visions of her own stabbing rippled through her and bile rushed up her throat. The man cried out in agony, falling to his knees in shock and she pulled the knife free. Without giving herself a chance to wallow in her fears and panic, she shoved the blade through his throat and backed away when the man dropped to the forest floor. Blood splattered, mixing in the with the mud and rain puddles.

Her hands reached up, halting in the motion to press over her ears. She felt tears prickle in her blue eyes, the color in them sharper and vivid. She looked up at Lucas who had turned around after he put a bullet through the other man's skull.

For a hushed moment, they stood there staring at one another. It was hard to ignore the ways that they were so broken, made into violent things, standing covered in blood and with dead bodies at their feet. Lucas's chest expanded with a breath, and he held out his hand. "Come on," he whispered out, his voice made harsh with his pants. "We still have a long way to go."

Her lips trembled, with a deep breath. Her hand slid into his, and it was symbolic of the way her broken pieces fit along his, and she clutched his hand tightly. Without delay, they rushed into the woods to outrun their demons—both real and in their heads.

The squad room was filled with the chatter of conversations, and the scribbles of pen against paper while Gibbs's team worked on the reports of the case that they just wrapped up. "What ever happened to noogies and swirlies as a way of hazing?" Tony complained, loudly. He slammed shut the file on the desk, happy to wrap up this case. The instructor had been hazing young petty officers, treating them horrible. When the Admiral's son got beaten to death, several petty officers staged it to look like a suicide and had been arrested.

"Really, Tony?" McGee gave him a dry look.

"What's the matter, Mr. McGoo? Did the terms bring up some unpleasant childhood memories?" Tony questioned, with a lazy smile. A slap on the head from Gibbs as he passed his Senior Agent's desk made Tony jump nearly out of his own skin much to Ziva and McGee's amusement. Tony pouted for all of a moment before he bounced back, and he swirled around in his seat. "So, Boss, how is Evelyn doing? She can't be happy all holed up in that house, though with that Lucas man keeping her company—" He cut off at the blue eyed glare sent his way.

"Or she could not care that he was there. He might mean nothing to her," McGee suggested, helpfully.

Ziva snorted. "The way those two had eye-coitus that is highly unlikely."

"Eye-sex, Ziva. It's called eye-sex."

Gibbs pinched the bridge of his nose. "Are you all quite done?"

Ziva, McGee, and Tony shared a look before the conversation fizzled out. Abby walked into the room, dressed all in gothic black dress and umbrella like she was going to be heading to a funeral. Tony stared at her for a long moment, and when no one else spoke up, he felt compelled to, "Uh, Abby, why are you dressed for a funeral?"

McGee frowned. "Is everything okay?"

"No," Abby pouted, her nose wrinkled. "Frank is sick."

"Frank? There is a Frank? Do we know anyone named Frank?" Ziva asked, visibly confused.

Abby reached up, touching the side of her jaw. My mandibular second molar. It's been killing me for a week. I'm finally going to the dentist," she commented, with a heavy sigh.

"So you dressed up like that?" Ziva raised a brow.

"I'm more curious as to why she names her teeth," Tony countered, with a chuckle.

"You don't?" Abby smirked, and then winced at the motion. She let out a high pitched whine in the back of her throat. "Gah, I hate the dentist and his stupid torture tools, but I hate the pain even more. I just hope he doesn't pull it. I don't want to lose a tooth!"

"You take good care of your teeth, Abby," McGee reassured her. "You won't lose a tooth."

McGee then turned red at the attention that statement put on him. He ducked his head, cheeks red. "Not that I know anything about your mouth or teeth, or—" McGee stuttered out, before he turned resolutely to the computer. Abby grinned at him, and then leaned over to press a quick kiss on his cheek.

"Thank you, McGee," Abby said, accepting his reassurance.

"Called it," Tony whispered, under his breath.

"What was that, Tony?" Abby sent him a look.

"Nothing," he cleared his throat. "Just a cough."

"That's what I thought," Abby smiled, sharply.

"Jethro."

Gibbs looked upward to see Director Shepard standing up above, with a grim expression on her face. The light hearted mood immediately dipped downward, and a tension slithered insidiously in the air. Gibbs stared at her stonily before he set his pen down on his desk, picked up his coffee and made his way up the stairs towards her office. She had already turned around, not bothering to check if he was following or not.

The team all watched on silently.

"Why do I have a really bad feeling?" Abby asked what all of them were thinking.

Gibbs shut the door to Jenny's office behind him. "Is there a reason than you called me up here, Jen?"

"We need to discuss a few things that have come up. I wanted to info you that MI-5 and MI-6 have expressed an interest in Evelyn Matthews, and her connection to Lucas North," Jenny told him, outwardly calm. "Apparently, Lucas North and Harry Pearce have a long history that did not end well. His origins are much like Evelyn. Both betrayed by someone close to them, captured and tortured in Russia, and both came back years later to government jobs that put them in touch with potentially sensitive intelligence. I don't know if you know this, but Lucas North is working with the FBI because he almost traded Great Britain government secrets to the Chinese. For whatever reason, he thought better about and didn't betray the UK but you can understand why they are so worried about the parallels.

"SecNav is concerned that Lucas might influence Evelyn to do the same to NCIS and the US, even though Lucas is beholden to the FBI for his safety and sanctuary from MI-5 taking action against him," Jenny informed him, watching the anger burn white hot in his gaze.

"Evelyn won't do that," Gibbs stated, with conviction. He also didn't believe that Lucas could influence Evelyn like that. If anything, Lucas would do anything for Evelyn. He didn't like the man, but he wasn't blind. Lucas North was in love with his daughter. "She isn't scheming or plotting to use government secrets, Jenny."

"I agree," Jenny told him. "I will try to navigate the politic affairs of this on Evelyn's behalf, but she may end up having to answer a few questions down the line. But there is something else that has come to my attention," she added, opening her desk drawer. She retrieved a silver flash drive and held it up in between her fingers.

"What is that, Jen?" He asked, his voice quiet.

Director Shepard hesitated, setting the flashdrive down on her desk.

Gibbs's gaze lifted, his expression twisted in a scowl. "What is it, Jen?" He repeated, his tone sharp and frigid. There was a ball of anger that wrapped up tight in his stomach when he glanced down at the generic flashdrive sitting innocently on the desk in front of him.

Jenny drew in a deep breath, her eyes flickered away from him. "It was addressed to Evelyn. It was flagged around the days shortly before she was attacked and hospitalized. I think it was intentionally packaged in a way that Tarasov knew would set us on alert and start asking questions," the Director hedged, carefully.

"He wanted to drive a wedge," Gibbs surmised.

"That's what I believe," Jenny nodded. "Tarasov was hoping to limit her allies, and make her more vulnerable."

Gibbs stood there, the line of his shoulders drawn tight. "What is on the flashdrive?"

Jenny pursed her lips. "I shouldn't tell you that. You are too close to Evelyn to look at this case objectively."

"Damn it, Jen, just tell me."

The Director closed her eyes on a sigh. "It is information from MI-6 when Evelyn was believed to be a traitor, and a mole. The fact that is not true is conveniently left out and…" she paused for a split second, and gave him a sorrowful glance. "There are videos, too. McGee was able to break the encryption on them, and they were of Evelyn when she was being held in Russia."

Gibbs felt his blood burn like lava in his veins, and his hands balled up into fists. He recalled the way she spoke of being held in the hospital room, and while he didn't have details, he knew what happened to people captured by a foreign power who had information that they desperately wanted. He swallowed, harshly.

The door to the office burst open, and a frantic agent stumbled through. "Director, there has been an incident…" He went utterly quiet when he noticed Gibbs's presence.

Director Shepard looked at the agent. "What incident?"

"Reports from Fornell of a sniper on Matthews's residence," the agent explained, eyes flickering over to Gibbs uneasily. "Security team has not reported in. We have back up on the way—"

Gibbs stormed past the agent and out of the office, with Jenny hollering at him to wait. He ignored his Director because his daughter was in danger, and he wasn't about to let her down again. He briskly moved through the squad room, and walked over to his desk just long enough to get his gun and badge before he rushed out of the building.

McGee and Abby watched him, wide eyed. "He doesn't look happy."

"He looked scary," Abby added, in a whisper. "I've never seen Gibbs look that scary."

The cabin had seen better days. Isolated and forgotten, it was nearly falling apart. The garage in which she hit the vehicle was still standing, thankfully. It took her a moment to fiddle with the lock and key to undo the padlock, and lift up the garage door. She took heavy and deep breath, wiping the sweat from her brow. She brushed her hair out of her face and grimacing at the blood on her face. "Here it is," she whispered, exhausted. Her body was throbbing with pain from the fight and running. The still healing cut along her abdomen burn and she knew from checking to make sure she hadn't done some serious damage.

"Evelyn," Lucas reached up, his fingers touching her chin silently asking for her to look at him. When she raised her blue eyes to meet his, he continued, "I won't the promise that everything is going to be alright. Things aren't alright, but I will promise you that I will be damned before I let anyone hurt you. Maybe that doesn't mean much given that I hurt you but—"

Evelyn leaned up on her tippy toes, pressing a kiss to his lips. He melted into her touch, his hand softly caressing her jaw and when she pulled away he leaned his forehead against hers. "It means so much more than you think," she whispered out, clenching her eyes tight. She wished things could be like this. So steady and calm. So simple and clean. No danger on their heels, no uncertainty in their future. "I just wish this wasn't happening. Everything seemed so secure and everything seemed safe. I should have known better. Tarasov has ties everywhere, just the right pressure on the right person…it was always doomed. A person was bond to flip and tell him what he wanted for whatever price he dangled in front of them. I hate that I have brought this danger here, to the people that I've come to care about."

"What Tarasov is doing isn't your fault," Lucas stated, firmly. "You are not going to blame yourself for his actions, or for the actions of others. You have done what you thought was right. Bringing the formula and that information to someone who could stop him, and you have a right to your life. You have a right to know your father, and have family, and love. You know that, right?"

Evelyn looked at him, sadly. "I think the moment that I signed up for a life of espionage and spies and secrets that I gave away that right, now didn't I?"

"No." Lucas shook his head. "That is still yours. People can try to take the things you care about, your right, and your life, but you have the power to stop them. You are more stronger than you give yourself credit for, Evelyn Matthews. One day, I am going to help you see that."

"One day, hmm? That sounds like you think everything is going to turn out alright and that we will get that one day," Evelyn smiled, slightly. "I thought you didn't make promises."

Lucas gave her an indulgent smile before the two of them got into the vehicle. Lucas put the key into the ignition, and pulled out of the garage. The truck bounced up along the gravel and unkempt road, and Evelyn searched through the bag to pull out the encrypt cellphone. "I need to call my dad, and let him know that we are safe," she said, softly. Her fingers trembled and she messed up the phone number twice before she finally got it right. Pressing the phone to her ear, Evelyn waited with baited breath.

"Gibbs," he barked out, viciously.

Evelyn felt her breath hitch. "Dad," she whispered, hoarsely. It took everything in her not to breakdown at the sound of her dad's voice, and she clenched her eyes tightly shut.

"Kelly, are you alright?" His vicious tone melted away into relief and worry. "Are you somewhere safe?"

"In a vehicle about a mile south from my house, and heading west on the interstate," Evelyn informed him, when they pulled out off the back roads. Her voice shook and broke every other word, and her fingers clutched around the armrest. "W-we evaded the sniper, but had t-to…to kill two other people that were making our way through the forest. It…it appears we have a mole. Someone h-higher up. Not e-everyone had access to our l-location and knew enough about the s-security to be able to efficiently take them out."

"Go to NCIS. Do not stop for anything."

"Okay. We are on our—"

And a large SUV slammed into the side of the trunk. The world turned sharply, her cellphone went flying across the trunk and her body slammed forward into the console, her seat belt forgotten in their haste. The metal crashed together with a sound as loud as thunder, the shatter of glass that reigned down over her like diamonds and shrill screech of tires was the last thing she heard before the truck rolled into the ditch.

And then everything went black.

END OF CHAPTER!

Another cliffhanger! I'm sorry! I am really about ready to wrap this story up, and can't wait for you all to see the conclusion of it! :D ***I did hate wrapping up the case that the Team was working up off screen, but the game that I was using as a guide through the case wasn't available on my Kindle anymore. My old one is broke because my nephew. So, I really wanted to star more of the cast and develop them better, but it just wasn't going to happen. I had to change where the plot went a bit, but hopefully it will still be very enjoyable.*** (The bit of dialogue about Abby's tooth is from an episode in Season 6)

RRs are appreciated.
