Al listened to the beeps of the monitors around him. He took in a deep breathe, he could smell the hospital in the air. He could feel it. That mere fact seemed too good to be true, but it was true. Thanks to his brother. His crazy brother.
Ed had put up a fight when the doctor had kicked him out of his room. He only left when Al had told him he would probably sleep the day away and didn't want him to be bored. Even then, it was grudgingly. The doctor told him he could be back by noon the next day. It was two now, Ed wasn't back yet, it made him wonder where his brother was, but he wasn't too concerned. Al just hoped Ed wasn't causing mass destruction. As Al drifted off to sleep, he imagined Ed creating more of those horrible doors that he always made.
When Al next woke up, he realized it was a knock that had awaken him.
" Mr. Elric? are you awake?" A voice called out to him, "You have a visitor. Shall I send them in?"
"Who is it?" Maybe it was Ed.
"Your brother." Called it.
"Great!"
"I'll send him in then."
"Thank you!"
"Hey Al!" his brother said as he walked into the room carrying a large box.
"Hi brother, what's in the box?" asked Al as he sat up, maybe it was food. Probably not though, the doctors had forbidden actual food, and Ed was not one to fool around with his brothers health.
"Glad you asked Al!" Ed grinned before coming over to his bedside and tilting the box over him.
Al's first reaction was to panic, because well, it was Ed, his crazy older brother. His second reaction was to tentatively reach out and touch the majestic fur balls Ed had dumped onto his lap. Kittens, kittens were squirming and mewling on his bed. His hand landed on a grey one, it was so soft, like touching a cloud.
"Meow." another cat was pawing at his shirt, he stroked it too.
"How did you-?" He looked at his grinning brother.
"While you were knocked out on drugs, I went around looking for cats. I went to all the places you seemed to find them, and others too." Ed picked up a yellowish one that was eyeing the edge of the bed, "Remember this one?"
Of course Al remembered it, he had hidden it in his armor once, a long time ago.
"She actually found me, tried to take my lunch, so I brought her to you."
"How'd you get past the doctors?"
"I gave all of them baths." Ed shrugged acting nonchalant, but Al knew better. His brother really was crazy. There were about twenty cats surrounding him. It would've taken a while to bathe them all, especially with Ed's passive attitude towards them.
"Thank you brother." He whispered as he stroked the cats.
"Don't mention it." Even if washing all the cats had been a chaotic event, and he had gained a few scratches, he would do it all again in a heartbeat if it made Alphonse smile this much. As he watched his younger brother struggle to hold all the cats at the same time, he thought it was the best sight he had ever seen, even if they were in a hospital. Even if that yellow cat was the rudest being on the planet.
