Seven months later

Reid blew bubbles and grinned happily as Hazel clapped her hands with glee. Garcia also giggled as she recorded Hazel enjoying all the bubbles. Henry was staying with a friend for the day and over night which left Garcia and Reid to have a day with their god-daughter. The BAU workload had been heavy over the last few months but the next few days were free for him to enjoy and relax with the team. The last seven months had thankfully been peaceful when it came to Norton's attack haunting him. He was managing the nightmares and attending a support group after Garcia had discussed it with him. The group helped him understand that he wasn't alone. Morgan had even joined him on a few occasions and had begun to talk more about what Buford had done to him. They still lived together and enjoyed being roommates. Reid had even been there when Morgan and Savannah had ended their relationship. Savannah had cheated on Morgan after having a huge argument with him over their relationship and Morgan's reluctance to go further. They both had each other as brothers and Reid had been there for Morgan through the tough times as Morgan had been there for his.

The protective nature of the team had never gone away. JJ made sure he came over for dinner at least twice a week when work allowed. Hotch kept a watchful eye over him at work and invited him to have coffee in his office once a week to make sure everything was going well. Rossi had asked him to help him with a new book and Reid loved working so closely with Rossi, especially if they did enjoy a few drinks while discussing past cases. Garcia had made him pack on a few pounds after making him lunch everyday and giving it to him in the morning. He always went home with a dessert too. She also invited him to movie marathons when they were not busy. Morgan always went with Reid when in the field. The situation with Eric had caused the team to worry about him more and more.

His relationship with his god-children remained stronger than ever. Henry was now a magician in training after asking Reid to teach him lots of magic tricks. Reid promised to teach Henry two tricks for every top report card that Henry brought home. An agreement that Henry was sticking to. JJ was so proud of her son bringing home good grades. Hazel was eleven months old with beautiful blond curly hair. She adored her godfather and always wanted to be cuddled by him when he came over for dinner or to babysit.

Life was nothing but great and he wanted to keep it that way.

He blew another set of bubbles before realizing that the bubble liquid was all gone. He rose up from the blanket on the grass in JJ's back garden and walked over to the table to get some more toys. Reid took a few teddy bears and turned around. He gasped at what he saw. "Garcia, I think she's about to walk."

Garcia squealed with delight and brought up her phone again. "JJ! Will! You have to hurry. You won't believe this!"

JJ and Will came to the back porch and both grinned with pride as Hazel stood on her feet. Reid walked a little closer and held out his hands. Hazel cooed and began to take her first wobbly steps towards him.

"Oh my god," JJ smiled. "She's walking. Her first steps."

"She's really doing it," Will said with joy. "Look at her go."

Hazel almost fell but stabled herself and walked with her hands held out to Reid.

"You can do it, Hazel," Reid encouraged. "You're almost there."

Hazel stumbled to Reid and giggled as he swooped her into his arms. Reid kissed her cheek. "You're such a big girl. Well done, you did so well. I'm so proud of you."

"Spe-Spe," Hazel cooed before leaning against him. JJ came down and held her daughter's hand.

"I'm such a proud mommy," JJ said. Hazel began bouncing in his arms at all the attention she was receiving. Reid passed Hazel to JJ but JJ let out a small chuckle as Hazel's face scrunched up and her little arms reached back for him. JJ passed her back to him and sighed. "She loves you and she's got you wrapped around her finger."

"Hazel means commander and I'm hers to command," Reid said happily before turning to a now beaming Hazel. He brought up his free head and touched her nose causing her to giggle. "You're the best little angel ever. Yes, you are."

Two days later

Reid stirred the sauce that Rossi had prepared. He grabbed a small spoon and tasted it. He placed the spoon in the sink and called to Rossi. "I think this needs a little more pepper."

Rossi came into the room and tasted the sauce. "I think you're right. You're learning, young apprentice," Rossi smirked before going to the oven and checking on the chicken that was roasting. He rubbed his hands together. "That is cooking to perfection."

Reid placed down the spoon and looked to Rossi. "Thank you for doing this."

"What do you mean?"

"Everyone in the team has supported me and it means so much. You all include me in your lives more and more. You invited me to help cook dinner tonight for the team and you've been doing cooking lessons with me for months. Thank you for making me live properly. Even before Norton, I was very withdrawn from the world. Now, with all your help, I'm finally learning to live life to the fullest."

Rossi came over and put both his hands on Reid's cheeks. "You're always welcome in my home and soon, I will tell you my secret recipe for my famous lasagna. I consider you my son."

Rossi kissed Reid's cheek causing the genius to laugh.

"Siete preziosi per la famiglia," Rossi said.

"Non avrei potuto chiedere per una famiglia migliore," Reid replied in Italian.

A week later

Henry smiled with glee as he performed the card trick. "I did it, Uncle Spencer."

"You're getting good," Reid nodded before bringing out an unsolved rubix cube. "The trick I'm about to show you is very difficult and you won't be able to do it till you're a little older. I can teach you a lot more things leading up to this and I promise to teach you it when you're ready. Watch."

Reid showed Henry the rubix cube before placing it in his hand. He threw it up in the air, clapped his hands and caught it as it came down. He showed to it Henry to reveal that it was now solved. Henry grabbed the cube and gasped. "How did you that, uncle Spence?"

"Magic and it is magic I will eventually teach to you. For today, we're going to learn how to make things disappear. Did you get a good grade on your presentation?"

"I got the top grade," Henry assured Reid. "What are we going to make disappear?"

"This key," Reid said. "You ready?"

"I'm ready to be the amazing Henry!"

Reid chuckled and ruffled his godson's hair.

Two weeks later

Morgan watched as Reid began assembling the new book shelf they had brought for the rest of Reid's books to go on. Reid dropped the screwdriver and let out a small growl. "Reid, you have a Ph.D. in engineering and you're getting angry because a bookshelf is getting the better of you."

"Don't mock me," Reid sighed before letting out a small laugh. "The screw just won't go."

Morgan bent down and took the screwdriver from the Reid's hand. He brought it up and began to screw it into the wood easily. "This is how you do it. Sit on the couch and I'll finish this off."

"Show off," Reid said playfully before bringing out a box of books. "Thanks for letting me put up another bookshelf."

"As long as the living room doesn't turn into the world's biggest library, we're fine," Morgan said before bringing up another piece of wood and screwing it in. "How are you feeling, kid?"

"I'm fine," Reid assured him. "Why do you ask?"

"In all the time I've known you, I think this is the happiest I've seen you. You're socializing more and I haven't seen you shrug away an invitation to a night out with the team in ages. It's just great seeing you do so well. You looking forward to Hazel's birthday party in a few days?"

"I am. She's turning one and I've brought her lots of gifts. JJ is probably going to tell me that it's too much but you only turn one once and one of her gifts is something for her future."

"What have you got her?" Morgan questioned.

"You'll have to wait and see."

Hazel reached out and let out a babyish laugh as Reid made the teddy bear walk towards her with his hands. "Te-te."

"Look, teddy wants to wish you a happy birthday," Reid said in a funny voice. He brought up the bear and made it kiss her cheeks. Hazel grabbed it and hugged it close to her chest. He laughed as she began to pat the bear's head. He looked up as JJ gave the signal.

Rising to his feet, he brushed himself down and then picked up Hazel. Garcia already had a her phone out as JJ came through the back garden door with Will and a cake in her hands. The rest of the team began to sing. Hazel let out a small 'oooohhh' noise before clapping her hands.

"Ma, ma, ma, ma," Hazel repeated as she pointed to the cake.

"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday, dear Hazel. Happy birthday to you!" the team sang before all clapping together.

"Blow out the candle for mommy," JJ smiled. Hazel tried to blow out the candle but couldn't. Reid made sure she couldn't see and helped her blow it out. She laughed as the flame went out. Hazel put her hand on the frosting of the cake before JJ or Reid could stop her. Her hand came away and came to Reid's cheek. Hazel giggled as she smeared the frosting over her godfather's face.

Hotch brought up the camera and snapped a picture. "Frosting looks good on you, Reid."

Reid moved Hazel to one arm and used his free hand to bring some frosting on his finger. He put it in mouth and tasted the frosted before facing Hazel. "Yummy."

"Yum, yum, yum, yum, yum," Hazel repeated she tasted the frosting on her hand.

"What are we going to do with you two?" Will shook his head with a smile.

Reid watched as Hazel finished pulling the paper off one of the presents he had given her. It was a set of plush toys with each having numbers and the alphabet on. Hazel brought the ladybug toy up and began to poking the dots on the top. JJ was surprised when Reid gave an envelope to her. She opened it and pressed her hand over her heart when she looked inside the card. "Spence, this is too much."

"What is it?" Rossi asked.

"A trust fund," JJ explained, her eyes still wide. "He started a trust fund for Hazel."

"Henry too," Reid said before picking up his soda and taking a sip. "I'll be adding to it every year and by the time they are ready to go to college, they'll be able to do what they want. They both saved my life and I want to help them follow their dreams. Each fund has five thousand dollars in it already. It isn't too much for them."

JJ rushed over and hugged Reid with all her might. "Thank you. This means so much."

Reid came away from the hug and held her hand. "They mean the world to me and I'll do anything for them. You all mean the world to me and I wouldn't be here without all of you."

Will raised his cup of soda. "To Spencer Reid. A survivor, a brother, a son, a godfather and brilliant friend."

"To Spencer," the team said in unison.

Reid brought his own cup up and smiled. "To all of you, my family."

The rest of the team felt their heart warm as Reid took a sip of his soda. Hazel hit her juice cup against his cup causing the team to let out a gentle laugh. He kissed the top of her head and raised his cup again. "To Hazel, the birthday girl!"

"To Hazel!"

Laying in his bed, Reid felt content and calm with his mind and body. He turned his head to look at all the pictures on his bedside table. Every photo a reminder of what he had almost thrown away when he had tried to take his life but also a reminder of what he had to live for. His family watched over him while he slept and watched over him while he spent time with them. Norton had tried to take him away from his family but he had failed because his family had saved him. He had tried to take himself away from his family but they had rescued him from the dark chains of death.

He touched the photo of the team. "Thank you for never giving up on me."

He turned off the light and brought his thoughts away from Norton. The monster from his past couldn't hurt him again. Snuggling into his pillow, he thought about the next day.

Another day that he was with his family and not alone.
