Chapter 32

Gaby stood outside of the hospital with Derek. After she, Derek, Melissa, and Rafael found Stiles they took him to the hospital. She was forced to ride with Scott's parents because Stiles wouldn't let go of her. When they got to the hospital Stiles finally let go of the blonde to embrace his father. Gaby got a text from Derek and excused herself claiming she needed some air. Derek had switched her car for his and was parked next to Stiles' jeep. Aiden hopped out of the jeep after he and Derek jump-started it to charge up the battery again. The blonde was only half paying attention to the conversation the boys were having, she was focused on her thoughts but kept an ear on them. "So," Aiden started, "you think he just sleepwalking? Or is there something more to it?" He looked between the pair and quickly noticed Gaby was deep in thought.

"In this town there's always something more," Derek sighed putting one end of the jumper cables onto his battery.

"What if I told you I know something more?"

"I would say," Gaby spoke up causing Aiden to jump "share now or I'll find some way to beat it out of you…probably just use Derek." She heard Derek scoff and gently kissed her temple. She sent him a smile and a wink.

"I kind of overheard…" Aiden cleared his throat and shot Gaby a nervous glance causing the blonde to raise an eyebrow. "Well, I listened in on Stiles talking to Scott and Gaby…" Gaby let out a warning growl and Aiden shrunk back a bit. "How he thinks he was the one who wrote that message in the Chemistry room. The message telling Barrow to kill Kira."

"You think Stiles, skinny defenseless Stiles, is the Nogitsune? A powerful dark spirit?" Derek asked not noticing Gaby fidgeting, but Aiden did notice it.

"I'm not the only one thinking it. I'm just the only one saying it. Right Gaby?"

Gaby looked down and let out a loud sigh. Derek caught his mate's eyes but continued on his thought process "This thing wants to possess someone and chooses Stiles? Why wouldn't it take someone bigger, stronger? Someone with a little more…power."

The blonde shook her head "Maybe it's because he was weaker…three people in this town had the vulnerability that was needed in order for the Nogitsune to get in. Scott and Allison are much stronger mentally than Stiles and it latched on to the one person it could."

"Why isn't he as strong as the other two?" Aiden asked her.

"You don't know him like I do."

She noticed Derek put the two cables together and watched as they sparked. The blonde shot him a confused look and he shook his head telling her he'd tell her later. "What do you think Derek?" Aiden asked him.

He looked up and shook his head "Gaby's usually right about this kind of stuff. I'd trust her logic."

"I'm gonna head back in come find me when you're done," Gaby sighed.

Derek gave her a quick kiss and watched as she ran inside. The blonde quickly found Scott, his parents, and Lydia "Everything okay?" Scott asked her.

She nodded "Derek's working on starting the jeep up again."

They all nodded and looked as the Sheriff came towards them. All of them stood up and looked at him to see how Stiles was doing. "He's sleeping now," the Sheriff told them all "and he's just fine."

"That's good to hear," Gaby spoke up causing the Sheriff to squeeze her shoulders and nod.

"He uh…he doesn't remember much. It's a bit like a dream to him." He looked over at Scott's dad "Thank you."

"I can't speak for Gaby and uh…" Agent McCall started looking at the blonde.

"Derek," Gaby supplied for him.

"Gaby and Derek, but it was that repellent we sprayed in the coyote den to keep other animals out. I couldn't go near it without my eyes watering. It's just a good thing he mentioned it over the phone."

"No, it was more than that. Thank you," Sheriff Stilinski told him.

"It was a lucky connection."

"McCall, can you shut up please and accept my sincerest gratitude?"

The agent held out his hand "Accepted."

"All right, you three. You've got school in less than six hours," Melissa said looking between the three teens "Go home, go to sleep."

"Okay," Scott agreed.

Scott led the two girls away from the adult. "I don't know what happened," Lydia told the two alphas "I was so sure."

"Yeah, I wasn't much help either," Scott sighed "It doesn't matter, if he's okay."

Lydia turned around causing all of them to stop. "Lydia?" Gaby asked the redhead.

"Lydia, do you hear something?"

"No," Lydia told them "I didn't hear anything." Gaby shot the girl a disbelieving look, but didn't respond.

At school Gaby sighed and continued to stare at her locker. Her thoughts were completely on Stiles and she was having a tough time focusing. She almost called in sick earlier that morning, but Derek convinced her to go to school. The blonde sighed and grabbed her biology textbook before walking towards her class. Gaby stopped when she caught a familiar scent. She quickly made her way towards the scent and stopped behind Derek. "What are you doing here?" she asked him.

Derek looked at her but didn't respond. He merely pulled her into a hug and kissed her head. "Scott…wait!" the two heard Kira call out to her friend.

They watched as Kira's face fell when he didn't respond. "You'll have to forgive him," Gaby responded causing Kira to look at them.

Derek nodded "He's a little preoccupied. But I can help you."

The blonde sent him a very confused look but didn't say anything. "Why would you want to help me?" Kira asked him.

"Because I want you to tell me everything that happened at the power station with William Barrow. Actually, I want you to show me."

Kira looked at him unsure of it all. "Kira," Gaby said stepping towards the girl "I'll be with you the whole time there's nothing to worry about." Kira finally nodded and Gaby turned back to Derek "Think we can wait until after classes?"

"No practice today?"

"I'm excused, but seriously we have like three classes left."

"No."

Gaby threw up her arms "You're the one who told me to go to school today. You're lucky I love you." He shot her a smirk and continued to walk out of the school with the two girls following him.

Melissa and the Sheriff sighed looking into the room where Stiles was asleep. "It was the other day," Melissa started "I asked him some questions. Just symptoms and, um….yeah."

"It's okay," the Sheriff nodded "I think uh…" he pulled out a notebook "I think I know what you're talking about. I've been writing these down for the past two weeks."

Melissa took the notebook "Gaby was actually the one to bring it to my attention."

"She was always a smart girl. Gaby was with him that night."

Melissa nodded, "What do you think we should do with Stiles."

"I think we need to do some tests."

Gaby, Kira, and Derek walked through the power station. Kira looked around, "It was around here, I think, but everything kind of looks the same now."

"Gab?"

"I honestly don't remember…I wasn't paying that close of attention. I was a little preoccupied with the psycho cowering away from me in fear," Gaby sighed running her hands through her curls.

She looked over as Derek spotted something on the ground. The two girls shared a look and quickly followed the scuffmarks on the ground. Gaby stilled recognizing the object attached to a control panel. "What is that?" Kira asked "Is that a baseball bat?"

"Not just any baseball bat."

"It's Stiles' bat," Derek finished for her. The beta walked closer to it causing the blonde to shift uneasily. He shot her a reassuring look and tried to pull the bat away from the panel. After a few more pulls Derek finally got it off. He shot a look towards Gaby and Kira, "It's magnetized." The two watched as he put the tip of the bat where the scuffmarks began. The bat started to shift towards the panel and attached itself back to the control panel it was originally stuck on. He looked back at Gaby then at Kira, "Kira, I'm going to need you to tell us everything you know about foxfire." Gaby turned and looked at the girl who shot her a confused look. The blonde nodded to a sign that read danger high voltage.

Around 6 that evening Gaby stood next to Scott in front of Stiles. She hadn't mentioned what she found with Derek and Kira earlier that day to either of them, right now all that mattered was getting Stiles through his tests. "I'm not sure I know how to pronounce this," the Doctor said looking over Stiles' folder. "Or if it's not actually a misspelling."

The three teens shared a look trying not to grin at the way the Doctor stumbled over Stiles' real name. "Just call him Stiles," the Sheriff replied.

The Doctor nodded and shut the folder, "Okay." He looked over at the teen in question, "Stiles, just to warn you, you're going to hear a lot of noise during the MRI. It's due to pulses of electricity going through metal coils inside the machine. Uh, if you want we can get you earplugs or headphones."

Stiles squeezed Gaby's hands that were clutched in his, "Oh, no, no, I don't need anything."

"Hey, we're just on the other side of that window," Noah told his son, "Okay?"

Stiles nodded at him, "Okay." The Doctor, Melissa, and Noah left leaving the three best friends alone before the test began. "You know what they're looking for, right?" Gaby and Scott nodded but remained silent. "It's called frontotemporal dementia. Areas of your brain start to shrink. It was what my mother had. It's the only form of dementia that can hit teenagers. And there's no cure."

Gaby bit her lip and tried to blink back tears. "Stiles," Scott whispered, "if you have it, we'll do something." He looked at Stiles, "I'll do something."

The blonde looked over at Scott then back at Stiles, "We'll figure it out. There's no way we're losing you." The three moved in for a group hug. After a minute the three pulled back. "We'll be right outside." Stiles looked at her and gave her a look. She felt a flash of fear pass between the two of them. She gave him another hug and kissed his cheek, "You're going to be okay, I promise."

"You shouldn't make promises you can't guarantee," Stiles whispered looking down.

"It's a good thing I won't break this one."

Scott and Stiles noticed the determination in her eyes and knew she wouldn't stop until whatever was wrong with him was fixed. "Neither of us will," Scott added. Scott hugged Stiles before he lead Gaby out of the room.

As soon as the two were in the waiting room Derek immediately pulled the blonde into a hug as she let the tears fall she held back earlier. Derek sat her down and occupied the seat next to her. The blonde leaned her head on her mate's shoulder while he rubbed soothing circles on the back of her hand. Scott observed the two of them from his seat across from them. He saw a change in Derek since him and Gaby had become serious and he had never seen her this happy. Scott caught Derek's eyes. "You know the stuff you were telling me about chemo signals earlier?" Scott asked him. "It reminded me of the time you were teaching me to use anger to control the shift."

Derek smirked and looked down at the blonde next to him before looking back at Scott, "I think you ended up teaching me more about that."

Gaby smiled and squeezed Derek's hands. "Are you teaching me again?" Scott asked him.

"Think of it more like sharing a few trade secrets. You know, I took Cora back to South America, right? It's where she spent most of her time after the fire. But that's not the only reason I left. I needed to talk to my mother."

"Your dead mother?"

Gaby snorted at her best friend's bluntness. Derek squeeze her hands back, "She told me something that changed my perspective on a lot of things. She said that my family didn't just live in Beacon Hills, they protected it. This town needs someone to protect it. Someone like you."

"Why not Gaby?"

Gaby smirked, "I don't think I can handle that responsibility."

Scott laughed "So you're dumping it all on me."

"Yup, best of luck."

Both boys snorted out a laugh at her sarcasm. Scott looked at the two in front of him, "I may need someone like you, Derek, to teach me a few trade secrets." Derek gave him a small smile and a nod agreeing to his terms. Scott looked at Gaby. She was staring in front of her, but not really focusing on anything in particular. Their conversation from the night before ran through his head. "Himself…" he whispered catching the pair's attentions. Scott stood up and pulled the blonde up, "You said he was struggling with himself…last night on the roof."

"Yeah," Gaby nodded looking over at Derek wondering what was going through the other Alpha's head.

"He was trying to protect us. Stiles was protecting us."

"From himself," Derek stood up. Gaby shared a shocked look with the two of them and quickly ran towards the stairs. Derek and Scott followed her without hesitation. "What are we looking for?" Derek asked.

Gaby shrugged and Scott answered him, "I'm not sure, but I think Stiles wasn't just up here struggling with himself. I think he was struggling not to do something."

"Guys," Gaby called them over.

She jumped up on a stack of wooden crates and felt around the top of a cage. Derek had his hand on her waist to make sure she didn't slip. Standing on her tip toes, Gaby pushed down a canvas bag causing all three werewolves to stare at the contents as they spilled on the roof. The three shared a look and Gaby started to climb the fence to get a better look at the top of the cage. Scott looked around and nudged Derek when he noticed a cable partial cut.

Melissa, Noah, and Stiles' Doctor all stared at the MRI results. The Doctor cleared his throat and pointed to a red area on the picture, "See this? The tissue here and there, both those spots are showing signs of atrophy."

Melissa closed her eyes at the news knowing exactly what it meant. The Sheriff stared at the scans a few seconds longer before slowly nodding "Atrophy."

"I'm sorry." Noah did everything he could to keep the tears building in his eyes from falling while Melissa placed a comforting hand on his back.

Inside the MRI machine Stiles starting panting heavily and looked around the machine. The metal clinking together was starting to panic him. So he closed his eyes in an attempt to calm himself down. When he opened up his eyes everything was dark and quiet. He heard someone move behind him and the teenager whipped around to see who it was. "Have you figured out my riddle yet?" the bandaged figure asked him. Stiles moved to face the creature, but it kept moving just barely out of sight. "If you answer correctly," the Nogitsune continued. He finally stood in front of Stiles with only the machine's bed between them "we might consider letting them go."

"Letting who go?" Stiles asked the creature.

The bandaged figure turned away from the teenager, "Your friends, your family." Stiles could see the Doctor, Melissa, and his father staring at screens unaware of what was happening. "Everyone who ever meant something to you. We're going to destroy all of them, Stiles. One-by-one."

Tears fell down Stiles' face as he asked, "Why?"

"Everyone has it, but no one can lose it. What is it?" the Nogitsune asked him.

Stiles shook his head, "I don't know."

"Everyone has it, but no one can lose it. What is it?"

"I don't know!"

"Everyone has it, but no one can lose it. What is it?" the Nogitsune screamed as he removed the bandages covering his face. Stiles covered his ears in an attempt to block the creature out. "What is it?"

"I don't know!" Stiles screamed clutching his head.

A new voice whispered, "What is it, Stiles?"

Stiles dropped his hands, "a shadow."

He turned around as the final bandages came off revealing his own smirking face staring back at him.

Gaby hopped back down onto the wooden crates after not seeing anything else on top of the cage. As soon as she landed the blonde leaned forward and grasped the fence for support. She barely felt Scott and Derek grab onto her afraid she might fall, all she could focus on was the change that just happened. Derek and Scott quickly got the small blonde down. Her knees buckled a bit from weakness. "Gabs?" Scott asked kneeling in front of her while Derek kept her from hitting the ground.

Her red eyes glowed in the dark as she whispered "He's gone."

"Who's gone?"

"We have to get downstairs."

Derek shook his head, "No…not until you tell us what just happened."

Gaby looked up at him, "I don't know how to explain it."

"Try," Scott pushed.

The blonde looked over at him and bit her lip. "I…have you ever felt the air pressure drop before a storm? You know like there's something building in your head and it wants to be released so your ears pop to try and relieve some of the pressure." Scott and Derek nodded at her. "It was kind of like that, but it wasn't a weight or pressure, it was a single emotion weighing on me."

"What emotion?"

Gaby shook her head, "The best way I can describe it would be a sadistic sense of pleasure."

"Like orneriness or mischievous?" Derek asked her.

"Worse than that…that's what I'd associate with a five year old trying to pull a prank on their parents, this is far beyond that."

Behind them the transformer in the cage blew throwing sparks into the air. The partially cut cable broke and started flailing around. Gaby gripped Derek's arms as they tightened their hold on her. The three watched in horror unsure how to stop the cable.
