Chapter 21

Planet Remnant

Beacon Academy

The battle for remnant had been going on for two days now, Batarian pirates were still fighting in various pockets of resistance across remnant however thanks to commonwealth, council and Remnantine forces Batarian forces have been all but purged from most of the city and all of Beacon. Beacon itself had been converted into a command and control centre and refugee holding centre for the citizens of vale, it was still in a state of disrepair after the orbital strike but most of the infrastructure had been repaired.

Ruby Rose walked down an empty hall way 'a rare thing at this time' she thought to herself as she looked back on everything that happened. She had seen her father get carried in on a stretcher by her uncle, his arm missing bellow the elbow seeing him like that, it hurt her. Not only that but she was still reeling from the loss of her friends; Jaune and Nora had died in the orbital attack on beacon, team CFVY had been down town during the invasion had and come back carrying their team leader in a body bag, Velvet was devastated and had a faraway look in her eyes, her team mates fared little better. Team SSSN had been hit hardest, they had been fighting down town helping evacuate refugees when a Batarian gun ship strafed them, sage and scarlet were cut to ribbons and Neptune was seriously wounded and was currently in a coma, Sun was by his side most days weeping for the loss of his friends.

What's more Weiss had received word that the Schnee manor in Atlas had been bombed and there were no survivors, her sister was heading to Vale with reinforcements from atlas at the time but her Mother, Father and Brother had been killed. Ruby was depressed, her team were all in mourning none of them knew how to deal with everything that had been dropped on them and they were doing the best they could to support each other while also helping and receiving help from the remainder of their friends. She was about to head back to her room when her scroll chimed she had got a message, she looked at it and saw it was from Glynda, after the bombardment Ozpin had been found unconscious and the various other leaders of Vales defence dead leaving the coordination of Vales defence to their subordinates including Glynda, they also had to coordinate with commonwealth and council forces to help secure the rest of vale. Snapping out of her reverie Ruby read the message.

"Miss Rose please bring yourself and your team to the war room there is something that we would like to discuss with you." Wondering what the hell this was about she quickened her pace to her team's dorm room. She opened the door to her team mate's dorm room and ducked immediately when a flying lamp nearly smacked her in the face.

"-What do you know they're dead; my mother, my father even my brother they are all dead!" screamed Weiss clearly Ruby had walked in on something

"I realize that Weiss but drinking isn't a good or healthy way to deal with grief." Blake calmly answered holding a bottle of alcohol away from Weiss.

"Yeah Weiss we understand you're hurting we all are but we can-"

"Shut it Xiao Long I don't need a bloody comfort talk I just want to be left the fuck ALONE!" Weiss screamed clearly this had been building and Weiss was letting it all rip at once

"Weiss you need to calm down and think rationally" tried Ruby but Weiss whirled on her

"I am Ruby and right now I am rationally telling all of you to just leave me alone and let me drink my sorrows away." She tried to reach for the bottle but was stopped when a hand grabbed her.

"You need to stop this Weiss" Ruby ordered, she said this in a cool and steely tone so unlike her usual sweet childish one that it momentarily froze everyone in the room.

"We know you're hurting, we all are but only by helping and supporting each other can we get through this, drinking won't help you any it will just make it worse, so please Weiss leave the bottle alone and let us help you." Weiss looked at her friend and partner and nodded before moving away from Blake who threw the bottle in the bin. Ruby enveloped her partner in a hug whispering 'it will be okay' her teammates decided to join and soon team RWBY shared a comforting group hug, it was in this moment that a silent agreement was made, no matter what they would face in the future they would stay together forever till the end as; comrades, friends and sisters. Ruby pulled out of the hug and remembered why she came here.

"By the way Glynda messaged me and asked that I bring all of us to her office." Getting themselves composed the girls nodded and followed their leader each feeling a little better knowing they could count on each other.

Glynda Goodwitch could feel the fatigue building in her as she tried to help detective constable Gallows and Colonel Marsh coordinate a unified defence between the Valean huntsmen, police and militia with the relief forces from the commonwealth and citadel council not only this but she was worried for her old friend Ozpin, then there was this new problem that had arisen. The doors to the war room opened allowing team RWBY to enter the room each of them looked a little worse for wear but all of them had a determined look on their faces.

"Good evening girls, I hope you are all coping well with… everything."

"We'll manage professor" Ruby replied in a slight monotonous tone, so unlike the chipper childlike tone Glynda was used to from her.

"I see, I called you girls here because you are currently the only full hunter team available in vale all others either are deployed or have lost members in the war and so are not at full strength." The girls exchanged looks before looking back at Glynda with fierce expressions on their face.

"We're getting deployed aren't we?"

"Yes"

"What do you need from us?"

"The white fang has used the chaos of the Batarian attack to sneak into Vale and kidnap the council, if their demands are not met they will execute the councillors. We need you to head to the white fang outpost, usually I would send a more experienced team but you girls are all that's available" the girls nodded and turned to leave but at that moment Alucard walked in

"Ah hello girls, Professor I couldn't help but over hear your assignment for the girls and I do believe that the commonwealth has some troops it can spare to aid them in this task."

"Any aid you can send would be appreciated"

"Of course now girls how would you like some super soldier reinforcements?"

"Are we getting Blackguard or Blacklight reinforcements?" asked Weiss, Alucard smiled flashing his 'fangs'

"Something much more dangerous."

Down town vale

Night settled down over the kingdom of vale and as it did 4 teenage girls were embarking on a dangerous mission. They approached the warehouse in the abandoned industrial district which the white fang was using as a base of operations for their operations in Vale. Team RWBY lay down on the roof of an abandoned office building across the street, they were watching as fang operatives conversed amongst themselves outside while on their patrols clearly on the lookout for any human or council forces.

"Okay so how should we proceed girls?" asked Ruby.

"There is a skylight on the roof of the warehouse we could use that to sneak into the higher levels then sneak downwards."

"Okay but we could use a distraction"

Blake thought for a minute before a light bulb popped in her head "Weren't we supposed to get some 'super soldier reinforcements?" Ruby Nodded before putting a finger to her ear where her earpiece was placed.

"Alucard can you read me over?"

"Loud and clear what do you need"

"We would like to call in those reinforcements you promised could they pose as a distraction?"

"I think they'll do more than distract them" the radio was silent for a moment before a new voice was heard.

"Deploying Tyrants" there was a loud crack followed by a whistling sound, team RWBY and the white fang guards bellow looked up to see two orbital drop pods entering remnants atmosphere.

Down town vale

The pod rattled and shook as it descended through the remnantine atmosphere towards its destination, the 'thing' inside was deathly calm and didn't seem to move as it breathed in and out calmly awaiting the moment it hit the ground

CRASH

In one fluid motion it grabbed its rifle from its harness next to it before pulling the helmet over its head the mechanisms whirring as it closed over its face and then with a hiss and a bang the pod door was blown off its hinges crushing an unlucky grunt who was stood too close there were 6 white fang members surrounding the crash and they all stepped back in fright as the ten foot armoured monster stepped out of the pod and then raised its rifle they tried to take aim in return but were too slow as the monster opened fire with a hail of green plasma covered bullets from its large rifle the bullets blew massive chunks out of anyone unlucky enough to be hit by them sending them to the ground where they quickly bled to death, two of the grunts stupidly charged the monster who simply swatted one breaking their neck instantly and sending them careening into a nearby wall before grabbing the last one by the face lifting them into the air and then clenching its fist crushing the grunts head like an egg, all the while small arms fire pinged off the things abnormally strong shields it strode forward opening fire again sending more corpses to the ground, it glanced to the side as it's 'brother' wreaked a similar path of destruction through the enemy lines, before long the front of the warehouse was covered in blood and guts with the disfigured corpses of dead white fang and brass shell casings littered everywhere the two figure turned to see more white fang guards emerging before skidding to a halt at the site before them, the two 'things' raised their weapons and charged heavy footsteps echoing and gunfire roaring as they went in for the slaughter.

Down town vale

Team RWBY couldn't help but stare from their position on the rooftop, they had asked for a distraction not a massacre but that's what they had to deal with now, they looked on as more white fang guards exited the building in an attempt to take down what could only be described as an angry Blackguard on steroids, snapping out of their staring the four girls quickly and quietly made their way to the roof of their target building studiously ignoring the sound of screams and gunfire coming from their right as the latest wave of white fang grunts walked into a massacre. They arrived at the rooftop and looked down through the skylight easily spotting a quartet of tied up prisoners with at least a dozen guards still there to guard them and not outside in the massacre that was taking place not 100 feet away from them hidden behind a simple metal door,they were clearly nervous fidgeting and holding their weapons in shaky grips while their eyes were riveted to the door where the sounds of screaming, gunfire and what sounded like crunching bones were coming from.

Team RWBY's resident ninja quickly but silently unlocked the lock on the skylight before they all slipped in unknown to the traumatized guards down below, they silently took up positions surrounding the guards before moving in for the attack.

Ruby swung her scythe's blunt end down on the head of one fang guard knocking him out immediately before bringing the scythe round in a backwards swing into another guards face sending him flying backwards before slamming into a large shipping container, he was out cold. Weiss dropped in the middle of two guards and used her dust to freeze two of them up to their neck before charging at another guard. Blake dropped down on another one her two feet driving his head into the ground before delivering a spinning heel kick into the head of another surprised guard before readying her weapons as another guard charged her. Yang dropped down fist smashing into the ground creating a shockwave which sent three guards flying before slamming into various objects knocking two out, the last one righted herself before charging at Yang.

The white fang grunts fought desperately but their lack of an active aura put them at an immediate disadvantage which was their ultimate undoing as they were decimated by the four huntresses, before long the warehouse was silent as the fighting ceased, the sounds of battle from outside had faded long before leaving agonized cries and groans which were quickly being silenced. The 4 huntresses untied the councillors before leading them out of the warehouse to safety, they were greeted by the mammoth 'things' that had wiped out a majority of the white fang security who simply escorted them as a commonwealth drop ship came into land.

"How can we thank you girls" asked one of the councillors who was extremely grateful for their rescue.

"There's no need for that we're just doing out job" replied Ruby modestly as they flew over Vale towards beacon, the moment they arrived the councillors were escorted away by Valean militia. As Ruby watched them go she couldn't help but think about the future and what would happen. She was so deep in thought she didn't notice a familiar figure approaching until she was waving a hand in her face.

"Ruby, Remnant to Ruby… you there?" Ruby shook her head and looked up to see Pyrrha the crimson Spartan had a forced smile on her face, she hadn't been able to smile properly since Jaune passed, the memory was still too fresh.

"Yeah I'm fine just…thinking is all"

"About what?" asked Yang, Blake and Weiss just stood there listening for now.

"What's going to happen in the future, how it's going to affect us… how it's going to affect Remnant" the girls all looked down in thought as different scenarios played out in their heads.

"Well whatever happens we'll face them together and we'll get stronger to face it" Ruby declared.

"Yeah" they all agreed. Alucard who was a few feet away listening in couldn't help but allow what could pass for a smile appear on his mechanical face before turning around leaving the 5 friends to themselves.

Two Weeks later

In the two weeks since team RWBY rescued the Valean Councillors, the citadel council and the commonwealth announced that they would be sending in relief workers and ambassadors, the relief workers would be tasked with helping restore infrastructure and aiding those in need, while the Ambassadors jobs were only apparent when they arrived on Remnant.

Convincing the people of Remnant to join their respective organizations

The now unified councils of Remnant chaired by a now recovered Ozpin listened to all the different advantages that were put forward by both organizations but he also read between the lines looking into things that would not be beneficial to Remnant and how much they would harm its people, so far both Organizations presented what appeared on paper to be good deals but that was on paper.

If he sided with the council Remnant's technology, economy and culture would be dominated by the councils own, their technology couldn't compete with the councils, their economy might as well not exist and their culture was merely a foot note. Not only this but they would be watched and observed by the Turians who would be responsible for protecting them from outside threats who were severely over tasked due to the still lingering damage dealt to their numbers by the commonwealth, as well as this they would have to let spectres into their territory, agents who could act with impunity and do whatever they pleased so long as they accomplished their goals.

Ultimately Remnant would be nothing but a puppet who's strings would be pulled by the council.

Admittedly the situation was rather similar when it came to the commonwealth, their superior technology, economy and culture would completely dominate Remnants own however where the council would be responsible for policing Remnant's systems the commonwealth has offered to loan the remnantines starships to help them protect their planet until they could build themselves a suitably sized Starfleet, this was a plus in the commonwealths favour, as well as this when it came to the commonwealths version of the spectres, the Blackguard, while they did only answer to sir Integra, the prime minister, they could also be held accountable by planetary governors if their actions pose a significant threat to public health or security, so they were much more tame and had less collateral damage with their methods. As well as all this the commonwealth also offered something surprising which the council flat out denied.

Acceptance into the Blackguard.

He understood why, Remnatines were the only people out there capable of producing an aura and semblances so obviously they would want them as part of their best group of soldiers, but while the council ambassadors refused them spectre status stating that they were too young to join the elite group, the commonwealth actually offered them positions in it, this is significant to Ozpin because with people in the Blackguard those people had the ear of the Prime minister they could bring up issues which Remnant might be facing and help to make Remnant's voice heard, the final minor issue which would affect only a small number of people but would make integration a whole lot simpler, the commonwealth was human, they were familiar and so they would be much easier to understand then the alien council… in the end there was only one choice.

Later that evening

"This is RNN here live in downtown Vale where head councillor Ozpin is about to give a speech about the future of Remnant" People all across Remnant tuned in to watch what their leaders had decided, the ambassadors and relief workers watched with veiled interest as well curious about which path the planet would take.

"My fellow Remnans this past month has seen the most destructive conflict since the great war that Remnant has ever faced, we have all lost so much family, friends, loved ones… all of us have lost so much to those who seeked to enslave us" the people around the world listened with rapt attention as their new leader continued his speech. "But in our darkest hour, in our time of need, help came from the heavens. The Citadel Council and the Terran Commonwealth, galactic superpowers came to our aid and saved us from our fate… in the days following the war they have helped us rebuild, picked us up when we were beaten down. We owe them our very lives" the various off worlders felt touched when he said this and when the locals all gave them looks of gratitude, some locals were indifferent to them but most showed some form of gratitude for the help they have rendered. "But now the time has come where I fate will be changed for ever a decision must be made on who we will join… both have been invaluable in helping us and we owe both societies our very way of life… but we can only join one of them in our rise to the stars… and that society is…"

Everyone on Remnant held their breath waiting for the declaration which would change their lives

Integra Hellsing watched back on Earth the speech being broadcasted to her by her on site agents.

The Citadel council waited with baited breath on the Citadel their STG spies monitoring the speech closely

"…The Terran Commonwealth"

The Remnantines cheered at the declaration hugging each other and even some of their now fellow citizens.

The Citadel council hung their heads in disappointment as an opportunity to level the field was pulled out from under them

Integra smiled before picking up a chess piece from the board in front of her and placing it on the board.

"Checkmate"
