Oberon looked out across the night sky. The stars shown bright as diamonds, radiating the sweetest touch of light, no clouds to be found. Not ten minutes ago, Oberon, the great king of Faerie, had sent his most trusted and loyal servant, the sprite called Robin Goodfellow, on an errand. Of course Robin never went by that name anymore; he instead was referred to as "Puck" by all the creatures in the kingdom. This nickname was given to him by the king himself, as a gentle reminder of how young and mischievous his friend was. To Oberon, Puck was more than just a servant or advisor. He was a friend, perhaps even a son. To this moment, Oberon still remembered the day he met the young sprite.
It was within Oberon's first years as King. Newly wedded to Titania, they still loved each other greatly and rarely argued. They were content with their subjects and pleased with their lives. On a particular afternoon, while Titania was sleeping, Oberon thought he'd treat himself to a stroll through the forest alone. Leaving a messenger Fairy to notify the others, he went deep into the trees. He hadn't been walking long when he heard a rustling noise. Pausing for a moment, Oberon concluded it was the wind or a wild animal. That is, until he heard the rustling again. "Who's near?" Oberon called out. Another rustle. Oberon followed the sound until he came to a large bush. Peering in, he saw a sight he did not expect. A boy.
"Hello there young fellow. Why are you in this wood all alone?" The boy stared blankly at him, not answering. "Come now little one, you can speak to me. I won't bite." The boy continued to stare, wide eyed. Oberon sighed. "Very well little one. Keep your silence. But you look tired, hungry. Wilt you not come with me hence to fetch you some food and a bed?" Oberon held out his hand. Hesitantly, the little boy reached his own arm out towards the faerie king. Oberon swooped the child into his arms. "Come now little one. You are in good hands. I am Oberon, King of Faerie, and I will make sure my servants treat with the upmost respect and care." With that, Oberon started off towards the spot where Titania and the other fairies slept, carrying a silent, dirt covered child in his arms.
