Seven Years Later

Sam sighed and pulled the papers into his briefcase. This case was a total lost cause. The prosecution had video surveillance of the defendant committing the crime. In the morning he would try and convince his client to take the generous plea deal, but tomorrow he could deal with that, because tonight was a special night. He smiled at the thought of going home. He had been putting in some over time since they had recently lost one of their lawyers to paternity leave for the next four weeks, so he needed this little celebration. Sam stood up from his desk as one of the partners walked into his office. The man was slender, shorter than Sam, and had a full head of gray hair.

"Hey, Sam, I needed to talk to you about something."

"Sure, sir, anything."

"Saraqeal has forbidden any work talk tonight." Remiel smiled and Sam smiled back.

"Funny, Gabe said the same thing." The two laughed.

"Well, we don't them upset right?" Remiel clapped his hand on Sam's shoulder. "I'll see you later, alright, son?"

"Yeah, six-thirty. Sharp. I told Dean and Cas the same thing."

"Sara and I will be there on time. See you then." Remiel waved and then walked out. Sam logged off his computer, grabbed his briefcase, walked out and locked his office. Sam knew that a lot of people around the office thought that he had been given this job due to nepotism, but he and Remiel knew that wasn't true. In fact, Remiel wasn't even involved with the hiring process anymore and the firm was huge. He didn't know that Sam was going to be working for him until Sam's first day on the job.

Sam walked to the Impala. He drove to the house he and Gabriel had bought when they moved back to Lawrence three years ago. It was a two story, white house. It had four bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms and their dream house. They loved it and planned living there for a while. Sam pulled into the driveway, next to Gabriel's red Ford Focus (don't get Dean started). Gabriel had opened his own bakery shortly after the move back to Kansas, and business had started picking up quickly for the last year or so.

Sam got out of the car and walked through the front door. He could see a small girl with blonde ringlets sitting at the dining room table, coloring something. She glanced up and a huge smile spread across her face.

"Daddy!" She ran over to Sam and wrapped her skinny arms around his legs. He bent down and picked her up.

"Hi, sweetie. Where's Papa?" She giggled. Her blue eyes with the golden flakes around the pupils danced in the late afternoon sun that was coming in through the windows.

"In the kitchen! He said I can't be in there cuz the oven is on."

"Mary, where are…? Oh." Gabriel walked in and smiled. He had an apron wrapped around him and had some flour on his cheek. "Well, Mary, it appears that there's a mysterious stranger in the house." Mary giggled again.

"No, Papa! It's Daddy!"

"Oh that's right. Welcome home, Daddy." Gabriel stretched up and kissed Sam.

"Hi, sorry I'm a little late. My boss had me look over one more case before I left."

"Well maybe I should have a talk with him." Gabriel raised an eyebrow. "He knows how special today is."

"Hm…what makes today so special, huh?" Sam tickled Mary and she began to giggle and squirm.

"Daddy! Hehehe…stop it! Hehehe! It's my birthday!" Sam stopped and smiled at her.

"Wait, it's your birthday today?! Is that why Papa made you a cake?"

"I helped with it!"

"You did? Well then I bet I will be perfect." Sam kissed Mary's head and set her down.

"Papa said I can even help with the frosting!" Sam shot Gabriel a bitch face.

"Oh did he now?" Gabriel smiled.

"Come on, Daddy, it's her birthday. She deserves to have some fun." Gabriel bumped Sam's hip with his own as Sam rolled his eyes. Sometimes he could swear that he was raising two children instead of one.

"Okay, fine, you two have fun. I'm going to put my work away and change." Sam smiled and walked up the stairs to his and Gabriel's bedroom. He set his briefcase down near the bed and then walked into his closet. He chose jeans and a flannel shirt. He sat on the bed to change and thought about how quickly these past four years had gone. It seemed like just a few weeks ago he and Gabriel were filling out the adoption papers, and now, here they were, her fourth birthday. They had adopted Mary when she was seven weeks old and she had been so tiny. She could practically fit into one of Sam's hands. She had been named Mary before Sam and Gabriel had gotten to her, and Sam figured that was a sign that she was meant for them. As she grew into her features people were surprised to learn that she had been adopted. She had the same blonde shade that Gabriel had had when he was younger and her eyes were a cross between the two.

Sam walked back downstairs and heard Mary ask who all would be coming.

"Well, Uncle Dean and Uncle Cas and Grandma and Grandpa and maybe Uncle Kevin and Aunt Channing and Isaiah."

"Icky, why does Isaiah have to come?"

"Aw he's not that bad."

"Yeah huh, he picks on me." Sam chuckled as he walked into the kitchen. Gabriel held one of his frosting bags and Mary held a smaller one. They both were filled with purple frosting. Mary was sitting on the counter next to the cake.

"Well, you could punch him. Boys respond to that."

"Gabriel! Do not teach our daughter to hit people." Gabriel spun around.

"What? Uncle Dean does." Sam rolled his eyes.

"Uncle Dean is…not her father." Mary giggled.

"I like Uncle Dean." She commented as she began putting frosting on her yellow cake.

"Well I'm glad somebody does." Sam kissed Mary on top of her head. "So, what time should I start cooking?"

"You can wait until everybody gets here."

"Daddy, I want hot dogs!" Sam smiled.

"I know baby girl, I'll make you some on the grill soon."

"Yay! Thank you, Daddy."

"Of course, now why don't you go change? Your uncles and grandparents will be soon, okay?" Sam snatched her up off the counter and set her on the floor. She took off running for the stairs.

"Babe, where's Bones?"

"Out in the backyard." Gabriel went back to decorating the cake. "I didn't want him in the house while I was baking."

"I'm going to get him." Sam slipped out the back door and the golden retriever came running towards him. "Hey buddy!" Sam ran his hands through the dog's fur as his tail began to wag. "Ready to go back inside? Come on!" Sam and Bones walked into the house. The dog walked up and sat next to the counter. He breathed heavily and looked up at Gabriel.

"No, Bones. Go see what Mary is up to." The dog looked from Gabriel to the cake and back again. "No, Bones." Gabriel repeated, not taking his eyes off the cake. He had changed his frosting to a baby blue color, Mary's second favorite. The dog yipped and then ran up the stairs, presumably to Mary's room.

"So, Daddy, what do you think?" Gabriel took a step away from the cake. Sam walked behind Gabriel, wrapped his arms around his waist and laid his chin in the crook of Gabriel's shoulder. He looked at the cake. It was covered with purple frosting, but there was a large number four in blue, along with 'Mary'.

"Looks good, Papa." Sam placed a kiss on Gabriel's temple.

"Uncle Dean do it again! Do it again!" Dean smiled and tossed the girl in the air and caught her. She giggled more and more.

"Alright, sweetheart, I think that's it for Uncle Dean. I'm going to go help your daddy with dinner, alright?" Mary nodded and began running around the backyard, Bones chasing her happily. Sam flipped over the burger patty and heard one beer bottle open, then the other. A bottle appeared in front of his face.

"You done good, Sammy." Dean smiled as Sam took the beer bottle.

"Thanks, Dean." Sam turned around and sighed. He watched Mary and Bones run around the yard. Gabriel, his parents and Castiel were sitting the table on the patio. "Gabe made a cake, we should probably eat it before he thinks nobody wants it."

"Hey," Sam looked up to his back door opening and smiled. There were the Trans; Kevin, Channing and little Isaiah. He looked just like his father and was just a little older than Mary. "Sorry we're late. I just got out of surgery a little bit ago." Isaiah didn't spend much time before running after Bones and Mary.

"It's fine, man. How are you?"

"Great, busy, all the time. You know nothing out of the ordinary. How about you?"

"Same around here."

"Hey, Kev, you want a beer?" Dean offered as Channing walked over to the patio table. When Sam finished grilling, they all went inside to eat, with protests from Isaiah and Mary.

"Happy birthday, dear Maaary, happy birthday to you!" The whole house sang as Sam brought the cake from the kitchen to the dining room. Bones was already under the table, waiting. Mary had a large grin on her face as her family sang to her. She closed her eyes and then blew out the candle. Everybody clapped. Once cake was given out and eaten, the adults fell into easy conversation while the children ran back out into the backyard. Gabriel stood up and began to clear off the table. Sam did the same and followed his husband into the kitchen.

"That cake was amazing." Sam walked behind Gabriel and reached over him to put everything away in the sink. "Tasted almost as good as this." Sam whirled Gabriel around and pressed their lips together. They broke apart and Gabriel smiled.

"Almost as good, huh? Well, maybe I should try a little harder next time." Gabriel turned back around looked out the window above the sink at Mary, Isaiah, and Bones running around. Sam placed his hands on Gabriel's hips and pulled him back slightly. Gabriel sighed.

"They'll make a cute couple one day, don't you think?" Sam widened his eyes and looked at Gabriel.

"Who? What are you talking about?"

"Mary and Isaiah. Someday, they would make a cute couple."

"Are you really already talking about our daughter dating some boy?"

"Not some boy." Gabriel spun around and placed his hands on Sam's chest. His amber eyes looked up and met Sam's. "Isaiah. You know, your godson? They could fall in love, get married, have our grandkids, et cetera, et cetera."

"Gabe, they're four years old."

"So?"

"So, I don't want to think about our four year old getting married yet. Plus, she could meet other guys and fall in love with them." Sam looked out the window to where Isaiah had just thrown a ball and Mary and Bones were chasing after it.

"Hey," Gabriel pulled Sam's chin down so that their eyes met again. "Four years old is the perfect age to meet your soul mate."
