Chapter Twenty-Three: Journey's End: Part 2
Meanwhile on the other side of the Crucible, Mickey, Sarah Jane and Jackie were watching though a window, watching the prisoners turn into golden dust. They turned around when they heard a bang and saw Jack rolling out of a vent and stood up with a sigh of relief.
"Just my luck. I climb through two miles of ventilation shafts, chasing life signs on this thing," he said, looking at his vortex manipulator. "...and who do I find? Mickey Mouse!" he added, staring at Mickey with a small smile on his face.
Mickey however, had a straight face. "You can talk, Captain Cheesecake."
Then they broke out in laughter and gave each other 'manly' hugs.
"Good to see ya!" Jack chuckled and looked down at Mickey since he was taller. "And that's 'Beefcake'."
Mickey suddenly felt uncomfortable. "And that's enough hugging," he said and let go of Jack, noticing Jackie's smirk.
Jack then saw Sarah Jane and gave her a salute. "We meet at last, Ms. Smith."
Sarah Jane pursed her lips. "There is something we can do. You've got to understand - I have a son down there on Earth. He's only fourteen years old. I brought this," she said and pulled out what looked like to be a diamond necklace. "It was given to me by a Verron Soothsayer. He said... "this is for the end of days"."
Jack gently took the necklace with wide eyes. "Is that a Warp Star?" he asked in awe and Sarah Jane nodded.
Mickey and Jackie were confused. "Wanna tell us what a Warp Star is?"
Jack smirked. "A warpfold conjugation trapped in a carbonised shell. It's an explosion, Mickey," he explained as he looked at Sarah Jane. "An explosion waiting to happen."
….
Back inside the vault, Davros, The Doctor and The Master watched as the prisoners turned into golden dust.
"What the hell is that?" The Master breathed.
The Doctor groaned. "Don't get any ideas."
Davros smirked as he turned his wheelchair to face the two Time Lords. "Every atom in existence is bound by an electrical field. The Reality Bomb cancels it out - structure falls apart. That test was focused on the prisoners alone. Full transmission will dissolve every form of matter," he said.
The Doctor's eyes widened in shock. "The stars are going out. The twenty-seven planets. they become one vast transmitter. Blasting that wavelength..." he muttered.
"Across the entire universe. Never stopping. Never faltering. Never fading. People and planets and stars will become dust. And the dust will become atoms and the atoms will become... nothing. And the wavelength will continue, breaking through the Rift at the heart of the Medusa Cascade into every dimension, every parallel, every single corner of creation," Davros added with a smirk. "Doctor! The destruction of reality itself!"
A holographic image appeared with a familiar face to The Master.
The Master sighed heavily. "It has to be the Jones child," he muttered.
"This is Martha Jones representing the Unified Intelligence Taskforce on behalf of the Human Race. Can you hear me?" she asked. "This message is for the Dalek Crucible. Repeat: can you hear me?"
The Doctor turned to Davros. "Put me through!" he growled.
Davros chuckled. "It begins as Dalek Caan foretold."
"The Children of Time will gather... and one of them will die!" Dalek Cann giggled.
The Doctor turned to Dalek Cann and glared at the creature. "Stop saying that! Put me through!"
"Rose! I'm sorry, but I had too…" Martha trailed off and looked at The Master. "Where's Rose?" she asked him.
"Stuck in the Tardis with Fire Head," he replied. "And how are you on this fine day… or will it be night?" The Master muttered making The Doctor and Martha sigh in unsion.
Davros wheeled his chair in front of the screen. "Rose Tyler is unavailable and The Master is my prisoner. State your intent," he growled.
Martha held up what looked like a black computer piece. "I've got the Osterhagen Key. Leave this planet and its people alone, or I'll use it."
"Jones…. What the hell is an Osterhagen Key?" The Master interrupted.
"There's a chain of twenty-five nuclear warheads placed in strategic points beneath the Earth's crust. If I use the key, they detonate and the Earth gets ripped apart," Martha explained.
The Master's eyes widened. "And you… of all people want to use it! Do you know what will happen if you survive?"
Martha glared. "Don't argue with me Master! The Osterhagen Key is to be used if the suffering of the Human Race is so great, so without hope... that this becomes the final option. And besides… there's more than that. Now, I reckon the Daleks need these twenty-seven planets for something, but what if it becomes twenty-six? What happens then? Daleks? Would you risk it?" she argued.
The Doctor grinned. "She's good. No wonder Rose chose her as a companion," he said, impressed.
Martha turned to him, confused. "Who're you?" she asked.
"I'm The Doctor."
Martha's eyes widened and gasped quietly. "Oh dear God… she found you," she whispered making him smile.
Another holographic image popped up and showed Jack, Sarah Jane, Mickey and Jackie with a diamond necklace hooked up to some wires.
"Captain Jack Harkness calling all Dalek boys and girls! Are you receiving me? Don't send in your goons or I'll set this thing off," Jack said with a grin on his face.
The Master groaned. "Reminds me of when I tried to take over the Earth as Prime Minister for a year. All I need is Rose and its déjà vu."
The Doctor raised his eyebrow at The Master. "I need that story later," he told The Master before turning his attention to Jack. "Captain… what the hell are you doing?"
"I've got a Warp Star wired into the mainframe. I break the shell... the entire Crucible goes up," Jack said.
The Doctor stared at them as if they have gone insane. "You can't! Where did you get a Warp Star?" he asked in shock.
Sarah Jane pushed her way to stand next to Jack. "From me. We had no choice, we saw what happened to the prisoners," she explained.
Davros eyes widened in shock as he wheeled in front of of the Time Lords. "Impossible. That face... after all these years…"
Sarah Jane's eyes widened in fear. "Davros," she whispered before she stood up straight. "That's been quite a while. Sarah Jane Smith. Remember?"
Davros chuckled. "Oh, this is meant to be. The Circle of Time is closing. You were there on Skaro at the very beginning of my creation."
Sarah Jane glared. "And I've learned how to fight since then. You let the Doctor go or this Warp Star… it gets opened!" she hissed.
Everyone was too busy glaring at each other that they didn't notice The Doctor looking away. They were all going to die and there was nothing he could do to save them.
"I'll do it. Don't imagine I wouldn't," Jack said in a threatening tone.
The Master snorted in amusement. "That's the worst ransom I've ever heard of," he muttered before he glanced at the Time Lord next to him. "Doctor?" he asked when he got no reply.
Davros chuckled, seeing The Doctor's dark expression. "And the prophesy unfolds."
"The Doctor's soul is revealed!" Dalek Cann sang. "See him! See the heart of him!"
The Master pursed his lips. This wasn't The Doctor he knew. This was a darker Doctor. The one that was filled with guilt and sorrow, a burden that he never felt.
"The man who abhors violence, never carrying a gun. But this is the truth, Doctor, you take ordinary people and you fashion them into weapons. Behold your Children of Time transformed into murderers. I made the Daleks, Doctor. You made this," Davros snarled.
The Doctor shook his head. "They're just trying to help…" he protested weakly.
Davros smirked. "Already, I have seen them sacrifice today for their beloved Doctor. The Earth woman who fell opening the subwave network," he added.
The Doctor closed his eyes tightly. "Harriet Jones," he whispered.
"How many more? Just think. How many have died in your name?" Davros taunted.
The Doctor had his eyes closed tightly as he remembered all of those who had died for him. Jabe, The Controller. Lynda, Sir Robert, Mrs Moore, Mr Skinner, Ursula, Bridget, Jack and even The Master on occasion.
"The Doctor... the man who keeps running, never looking back, because he dare not, out of shame. This is my final victory, Doctor. I have shown you... yourself," Davros continued.
The Doctor just stood there, eyes closed and unable to move. He was shaking and to what The Master could see, he was trying to fight the dark thoughts that were swirling around in his head.
"Enough. Engage defense zero-five," The Supreme Dalek shouted.
On the hologram screen, Martha held up the Osterhagen Key. "It's the Crucible... or the Earth," she threatened.
"Transmat engaged!" A Dalek shouted.
Suddenly there was a bright blue light and Martha, Jack, Mickey, Jackie, and Sarah Jane appeared in the room.
Jack helped Martha up from the floor. "Martha! I've got you, it's all right…"
The Doctor held out his hand and it touched the cell, which rippled. "Don't move! All of you! Stay still!" he warned.
Davros wheeled his chair in front of The Doctor and The Master. "Guard them! On your knees, all of you. Surrender!" he demanded.
With the Daleks floating around them, Martha, Jack, Mickey, Sarah Jane and Jackie went on their knees and held up their hands above their heads.
"Jackie, I told you not to," The Doctor hissed. "What about Tony?"
Jackie bit her lip. "Yeah, well I could leave you after all that's happened. And I needed to see Rose again."
The Master sighed. "Now that the merry band is here, why are we all alive?" he asked sarcastically.
Davros pursed his lips. "Dalek Cann commanded it. The final prophesy is in place. The Doctor and his children all gathered as witnesses…"
The familiar sound of the Tardis made The Doctor's eyes widened in shock.
Davros's eyes widened in fear. "Impossible," he muttered.
"It can't be…" The Doctor muttered, staring at The Tardis as she became more solid.
The doors of the Tardis opened and a teenage girl with ebony black hair and storm grey eyes stood in the middle, holding some sort of gun.
"Jenny?" The Master spluttered in shock. "How the bloody hell are you here?"
Jenny glared. "Lovely to see you too dad."
The Doctor turned to the Time Lord next to him. "Dad?" he snorted.
The Master sighed. "Jenny is my generated daughter. I didn't even name her, Fire Head did," he explained before turning to his daughter. "But you died in my arms!"
Jenny rolled her eyes. "Honesty dad, how thick are you? I am your daughter. Surviving is in our blood. I regenerated, left Clive and the Hath behind and was trying to find you and Rose ever since."
"Enough of this," Davros barked before he raised his arm at Jenny and shot electricity at her. It hit her square in the chest which made her drop the gun. "Destroy the weapon!" he demanded and a Dalek fired at the gun, destroying it into pieces. "Now the end of the universe is almost upon us…"
"Not yet, Lord Creator…" Dalek Cann giggled.
Davros turned to the damaged Dalek. "What are you talking about?" he snarled
"There is another line of the prophecy. The Goddess of Time will make things right, everything must turn to dust, silence will fall…"
Davros growled. "What does that mean?"
Suddenly there was a golden light which made all of them turn around. It was Rose and she was standing in front of the Tardis, gold dust was flowing around her and her eyes looked a lot older than she looked.
"Rose," The Doctor stuttered. What the hell are you doing?" he spluttered.
"I'm the Bad Wolf, my Doctor. I come when I'm needed," Rose replied in a daze.
The Doctor's eyes widened. "But I removed that side of her!"
Rose snorted. "Not when the Tardis commands for help, all evil must be destroyed," she growled looking at Davros who wheeled his chair backwards, scared.
"But, my Lady. I was only doing what you told Dalek Cann to do…" he pleaded.
Rose glared. "I did not say murder innocent people or remove planets from their destinations. You have failed me Davros and now your time is up."
"EXTERMINATE HER!" Davros screamed.
"NO!" Jackie yelled, eyes wide as she watched her daughter.
A Dalek fired at Rose who just blocked it with her hand.
"Do you really think you can beat me Lord Creator of the Daleks? I was the one who destroyed your emperor. And now… I will destroy you and the contamination that you caused throughout the universe," Rose said as she raised her hands.
Everyone watched in shock as the Daleks simply turned to dust. Davros screamed before he disappeared.
The Doctor bit his lip. "Rose, the Daleks are gone, you need to stop this!"
"Deactivate holding cells," Rose replied, ignoring The Doctor as the he, The Master and Jenny are now free. "Planets can now go back to where they were originally. Silence wall fall."
The Doctor walked up to Rose and placed his hand on her cheek, caressing it lightly. "Please Rose… let go of this, for me," he whispered before he placed his lips on hers.
Rose seemed to freeze on the spot before her lips moved against The Doctor's. The gold dust faded as Rose raised her arms and locked around The Doctor's neck. They kissed for what felt like a life time when a voice interrupted them.
"OI, LOVEBIRDS! HATE TO BREAK THIS HAPPY REUNION BUT DO YOU THINK WE COULD LEAVE THIS BLASTED SHIP?" Donna shouted making Rose and The Doctor jump apart, both blushing heavily at the smirks of their friends.
"Right, everyone let's go!" Rose said before she made a dash to the Tardis, hiding her blush by her blonde hair.
Now it was time to go home.
….
They dropped Sarah Jane off first, Rose gave her friend a tight hug.
"You know where to find me," Sarah Jane whispered in Rose's ear.
Rose smiled. "Thank you, for everything," she said before she walked back inside, leaving Sarah Jane with The Doctor.
Sarah Jane turned to the Time Lord with a grin on her face. "You know... you act like such a lonely man. But look at you! You've got the biggest family on Earth! And you can't call yourself the Last of the Time Lords anymore," she said with a grin as she hugged him. "Look after Rose. She needs you."
The Doctor smiled in her hair. "I will. Goodbye Sarah Jane," he whispered as he pulled away.
Sarah Jane grinned. "Goodbye, my Doctor," she said before she walked down the path, a slight bounce in her step.
….
They next dropped off Jack and Martha near Torchwood.
The Doctor sighed heavily as he fiddled with his sonic and Jack's vortex. "No more teleporting for you," he scolded.
Rose shook her head fondly and turned to Martha. "Hey Martha, get rid of that Osterhagen thing. we don't need the wrong hands to get at it and blow up the Earth," she told her friend.
Martha grinned. "Consider it done," she said happily.
With one last salute from Jack and a hug from Martha, the two began to walk down the path.
That was when Mickey suddenly burst out of the doors.
"Oi! Where the hell do you think you're going?" Rose asked.
Mickey looked sheepish and shrugged. "Well, I'm not stupid…I can work out what happens next. And hey, I had a good time in that parallel world but my Gran passed away. Nice and peaceful. Spent her last years living in a mansion. There's nothing there for me, now," he explained.
Rose bit her lip and gave Mickey a hug. "I'll miss you," she whispered.
Mickey smiled. "I'll miss you too."
"So what will you do now?" The Doctor asked when they pulled away.
Mickey took a deep breath with a grin. "Anything! Brand new life. Just you watch," he said before he ran off after Jack and Martha. "Oi, you two!"
"I thought I got rid of you," Jack sighed in mock annoyance as the three of them disappeared from view.
Rose pursed her lips before she gave her tongue in teeth grin. "Five quid that Mickey and Martha will get together?" she bribed.
The Doctor thought about it and nodded. "Deal," he said as they walked inside, missing Rose's smirk.
….
The last one to say goodbye was one of the hardest for Rose. She had to say goodbye to her mum. The Tardis landed and Jackie walked out of the Tardis, confused when she found out that they landed in front of the Tyler mansion.
"Oh Rose, you have to come inside, just for a bit. Meet your brother. He's three now and a ball of energy, though I think he learnt it from skinny stick over there," Jackie babbled.
Rose bit her lip as tears started to fall from her eyes. "I can't mum," she whispered.
Jackie's eyes widened as she turned to face her daughter. "Why not?"
"The walls of the universe are closing down mum. The reality bomb never happened. I can't stay," Rose explained gently.
Jackie bit her lip. "But… I thought after all this was over, we could be a family again," she said quietly.
Rose wiped her tears away. "Mum, you have a new chance at a family. You've got dad back and a baby to raise. I've got my boys, my goddaughter and Donna to worry about," she said with a watery laugh.
Jackie sighed sadly before she pulled her daughter into a tight hug. "I'm so proud of you. My baby girl," she whispered.
Rose snorted. "I'm not exactly a baby girl anymore mum."
Jackie pulled away and wiped away Rose's tears away from her cheeks. "You will always be my baby girl," she said, chuckling.
Rose gave her mum one last hug before she walked back into the Tardis. Not seeing Jackie cry.
….
"Rose?" Donna asked quietly. "You alright?"
Rose raised her eyebrow. "Why wouldn't I be? The universe is safe and the Daleks are destroyed. What's the worst that could happen?"
The Master snorted. "Cybermen taking over and upgrading the universe?" he asked sarcastically.
The Doctor was unusually quiet which made Rose nervous. "Doctor?"
"It's just… Dalek Cann said that one of us will die. None of us are dying," The Doctor pointed out.
"Um… Dalek Cann is not entirely wrong…" The Master said.
"What do you mean?" Donna asked.
The Master shrugged as he clutched his stomach tightly. "Before Rose turned into Bad Wolf, and you guys were busy talking, A Dalek shot me."
Donna grabbed his arm tightly as he groaned and his legs started to buckle.
"Donna… stand back," The Doctor said as he grabbed Donna's hand while Rose grabbed Jenny's.
Donna turned to Rose. "What the hell is going on?" she snapped.
Rose gulped as she turned to look at the red head nervously. "Time Lords have this way of cheating death. They change what they look like, but they keep their memories," she explained.
The Master groaned again before his whole body turned gold. Rose, The Doctor, Donna and Jenny shielded their eyes as The Master changed. When the golden light faded, a man stood that wasn't The Master.
This man had dark curly hair that was styled, high cheekbones and cool piercing blue eyes.
The Master raised an eyebrow as everyone stared at him with their mouths opened.
"What? I know I probably look handsome, but do you have to stare?" he said sarcastically which made them turn away, except for Donna.
"WHO THE HELL ARE YOU?" Donna snapped.
Jenny bit her lip. "Dad… is it really you?"
The Doctor and Rose looked at each other and sighed.
"Here we go again," they muttered.
