Sarah opens her eyes, feeling a bit queasy after the ride of her life caused by a… trophy? That's what a portkey feels like, she thinks as she rises slowly to her feet. She rubs her hip as she feels something sharp prick her side. She reaches into her pocket to find Cosima's glasses shattered seemingly beyond repair from the rough landing.
Sarah sighed. She doesn't remember the spell Cosima showed her earlier in the year, and it wasn't as if she needed them anyway. She puts the pieces back into her pocket as she analyzes her surroundings. Was this the winner's circle? A graveyard?
"Cosima!" an accented voice shouts.
Sarah whipped out her wand and looked around for the source of the voice, "Who's there?"
For several moments, the graveyard was silent, leaving Sarah to question whether she heard anything at all, before she was tackled from behind, her wand flying from her hand. She tried to wrestle with the figure behind her but they were much stronger and had her immobilized in an instant.
"Who are you?" Sarah said into the dirt.
"It doesn't matter," the voice said as Sarah felt something sharp poke the base of her skull, "Good riddance, Cosima Niehaus-"
"I'm not Cosima!" Sarah shouted frantically.
The pressure of the knife went away and she was flipped over onto her back, the attacker still forcing her into the ground.
Sarah looked up and saw herself looking back at her, with wild blonde hair and a very pale face. Sarah squinted in confusion, causing her attacker to frown.
"You are. You are lying," Her attacker said as she put her knife back to her throat. Sarah felt its pressure ass he swallowed hard.
"No! I swear, I took a potion. Cosima is sick. She couldn't compete."
Her attacker's eyebrows raise as Sarah feels the potion losing effect, her hair uncoiling from the tight (and slightly painful) dreadlocks. She sighed at the great timing.
"Who are you?" the girl asked curiously.
"I asked first," Sarah said defiantly, gaining more confidence now that the knife was off her neck.
"It doesn't matter."
"Are you the one who attacked Rachel? The one who put a knife through her eye?"
"Yes. She was supposed to die."
"I'm sure," Sarah said, "But she didn't."
The girl frowned, baring her teeth slightly, "I won't fail twice," she said putting the knife to her a third time. Sarah was growing tired of this, she needed to distract her enough to get her wand.
"How many have you killed?" She asked her
"Four."
"Of us?"
"There is no us!" The girl yells slashing at Sarah's cheek and leaving a small gash. Sarah was suddenly brought back to the reality of the situation at that moment.
"Why are you doing this?"
"You and your sestras are abominations. God will not allow it."
"God?" Sarah said incredulously, "What are you some kind of chosen one?"
The girl smiled coldly, bringing her hands over her head, "I am light."
Sarah uses the small window to pitch the girl off of her, making a mad crawl and run over to her wand. The girl was picking herself up along with her knife when Sarah pointed her wand and shouted "Expelliarmus!"
The girl's knife flew from her hand as she looked at the wand in fear. She dropped to her knees as she silently whimpered.
Sarah walked closer to the girl, wand firmly in hand, "I'll ask you again, who are you?"
The girl just shrunk more into herself as Sarah demanded, "Answer me!"
A flash appeared in front of Sarah, and for the second time that night, Sarah's wand flew from her hand. She followed its path into the hands of-
"You..." Sarah said in disbelief, "You're behind all of this?"
Igor stepped from the shadows. "You could say that, yes."
Sarah looked back at the girl who seemed even more scared of the man who had just appeared, "You're the one who's got her killing her own-"
"Don't say it!" Igor exclaimed. "You all are abominations. You should never have been born. Helena has been chosen to set it all right. She will be the only one left after she finishes her mission."
The last words seem to spur the quivering girl into action, as she scrambles for her knife and points it at Sarah, her hands less steady than before.
Sarah scoffs, "Of course. It was you who put her name in the bloody cup."
"Oh not me. The age line would have detected someone older than the age of 18. No, I had to use someone… undocumented," Igor said with a smirk as his gaze shifted to Helena.
Sarah looked over at her as well, causing Helena to flinch and hold her knife higher, "How did she even get into the castle?"
Igor laughed, "There were two exceptions to the castle wards this year: a carriage, and a ship."
Sarah cursed internally. He had the whole thing planned out. "Why do you care what happens to us?"
"The less of you there are the better."
"Why? What did we do, we were just born, we didn't ask for all this shit."
"Just that you were born. You've done enough. All of you copies will be disposed of." Igor looks at Helena once more, "Go, child. Finish"
Helena laughs and lunges for Sarah, Sarah barely escaping a second gash along her side. Helena swiped again and Sarah grabbed her hand, trying to wrestle the knife from her hand. Helena used her momentum against her and tackled her to the ground again. Sarah felt the back of her head hit the hard ground and was dazed for just a moment, long enough for Helena to plunge the knife into her chest-
-if it hadn't been for someone summoning the knife right from Helena's hands.
"No one's killing anyone," a man said.
Sarah wrestled out from under a weaponless Helena yet again. Helena did not seem to care, as she was focused on the new face.
"Who are you?" Sarah asked, silently thankful that this man had saved her life.
"Well that's the question isn't it?" The man said with a thin smirk.
Sarah's eyes followed him as he exited the gazebo like structure into the flat of the graveyard, standing at a respectable distance from both girls, his bald head reflecting the light of the full moon.
"Oh Helena, what have they done to you?" he sighed.
Sarah looked over to the girl, wondering if her face looked as confused as Helena's did. It was safe to assume that Helena had no idea who this man was. Looking over at Igor, Sarah could not say the same for him. Igor's face was distorted in apparent disgust.
"What are you doing here, Leekie?" He spat.
That name reverberated around Sarah's brain, but she was too nervous to focus on it. She just wanted her wand back. She looked over longingly at the trophy, wondering if it would take her back to Hogwarts.
"I came to stop helena from killing anymore of her sisters."
Helena shook, either in rage or fear, Sarah couldn't tell.
"Only I can do this," Helena mumbled.
"And what exactly is it that you're doing Helena?"
"Doing right by god. Getting rid of abominations."
"And what makes you think you aren't one of those so called 'abominations?'" Leekie inquired smoothly, rubbing the handle of Helena's knife.
"I am original. These are copies," Helena hissed, gesturing to Sarah.
Sarah gave her a well-chosen finger.
"And who told you this? Igor?" Leekie continued.
"Yes."
"Mm," Leekie acknowledged, nodding his head, "And if I told you that you weren't the original, would you stop killing your sisters?"
"That is lie."
"It isn't. I know the original, and she's not here in this graveyard, I assure you."
Helena looked at Igor for explanation. Igor seemed to be struggling for a response.
"Don't listen to him Helena, he lies-"
Leekie scoffs silencing him with a spell, Igor fell silent and frozen like a statue onto the cold dirt, "You know nothing igor. You stole one of my subjects and trained her to hate and kill her own kind."
Leekie walks over to Helena, who seemed absolutely terrified of the man at this point. Leekie put his hands up innocently. "Helena, killing your sisters doesn't get you right with god. In fact, you don't need to get right with god. You haven't sinned. By being born you
were already accepted by him."
"I wasn't born," Helena spat, "I was made. With magic."
"I know. I made you."
"What?" Helena and Sarah said simultaneously.
Leekie laughed lightly, "How do you think I know who the original is?"
Sarah remembered where she heard the name before. McGonagall had told them when she was 11 that she had shared a soul with
5 others, and that the soul was split by Leekie and his acquaintances.
Sarah shuffled in place, "What about our birth mum? You knew her too?"
Leekie nodded.
"Who was she?"
Leekie smiled and walked past the two girls, stopping after a few moments at a particular grave stone.
Sarah read the name, "Amelia Balewa."
"Not the origin of your genes, but your birth mother nonetheless."
"And we were all born from her?"
"Yes. You, Cosima, Alison, Rachel and Helena were born from Amelia."
Helena's eyes widened, "I have... sestras?"
"Yes helena. You all are biological sisters. Whether I had interfered or not, you all would have truly been sisters from the beginning. Quintuplets."
Sarah frowned, "If we're all there is then who has she been killin'?" she asked pointing over to Helena, who seemed to be deeply contemplating something.
Leekie sighed, "Amelia was not the only surrogate, Sarah. There were others, born one at a time. Not five at once. You all shared one part of the soul that I had split. There are others around the world, with a part of your soul. Twins, Triplets, or maybe just a single child,"
Sarah's jaw dropped, "There's more of us out there?"
Leekie smiled and walked away, "Come with me, Helena."
Helena frowned and shuffled uncomfortably.
"I won't hurt you like Igor did. I'll guarantee your safety."
Helena looked at Igor, still petrified on the ground, then at the wand in Leekie's pocket. She started to walk towards him.
"Wait.. what will happen to her?"
"I'll educate her properly, on who she is and where she could be."
Sarah thought for a moment and said, "Well… can't Hogwarts do that too?"
Leekie frowned.
Sarah cursed herself internally and she hoped that she wouldn't regret her next decision. "Look Helena, we're your family. Why don't you come back with us?"
Helena looked unsure, "Why would you let me live. I tried to kill you."
"You thought you were doing something good. Now you know better, right?"
Helena blinked then shrugged. "He told me I was light"
"We're all light, yeah? We were all born together. We can help you."
Leekie interjected, "Now Sarah, I honestly don't recommend taking her back to Hogwarts, there could be all kinds of-"
"Look I would take your advice but I just remembered you were supposed to be in Askaban."
Leekie nodded, "I am. I don't recall if I've mentioned before that I am currently in multiple places."
Sarah frowned, "Wait.. Does that mean that.. You.."
Leekie smiled, "Yes. I have split my own soul."
Sarah smiled tightly and nodded once, "Right, well the way I see it, that's illegal. And you're a criminal. So thanks for saving my hide, and hers, but I think we're gonna go now." Sarah put her hand on Helena's shoulder, that twitched violently under her touch, "Come on Helena. We'll take care of you."
Helena looked back at her as Sarah walked toward her petrified companion, retrieving her wand from his frozen hand, but not before providing a well placed kick to his groin.
"Sarah, beware what revealing her could mean to the magic community." Leekie chided.
"How bad could it be?" Sarah said walking to the trophy still shimmering on the ground. She beckoned Helena over to the cup, who still seemed unsure about the whole ordeal. "When we touch this, we'll go back to the castle. Our family will be there, okay?"
"The sestras?"
"Yeah."
Helena wrung her hands, "What will happen to me?"
"We'll figure it out when we get there. Take my hand," Sarah said, holding out her palm.
Helena wringed her hands together, looking back at Igor once more, the man that had beat her many times, but was also a consistent source of food and shelter as long as she did what she was told.
"...Will there be food at this castle?"
Sarah chuckled, "Yes plenty of it."
Helena gave half a smile, and took her hand
Cosima heard them more than she could see them, but the blur of black and blue was unmistakable. She had done it. Had she done it?
She heard Alison shriek with joy and felt Delphine squeeze her hard, but she was trying to figure out who the hell was with Sarah. It was all a blur, but a very distinct white blur.
"Who is that with Sarah?" She heard alison ask
Cosima shrugged, "I can't see."
"Some girl with frizzy and blonde hair?" Delphine inquired.
"With sarah?"
"Yeah."
Alison shuffled to the edge of her seat, "Wait Cosima, is that… it looks like…"
"What?"
"She looks like us…" Alison said hesitantly.
Cosima squinted harder than she already was but she was right, the girl was the same height, even though she seemed a bit slimmer and paler, there was no doubt that the girl had the same build as her and her sisters.
Alison watched as Sarah helped the girl up and thought aloud, "Cosima, you don't think that could be the girl Rachel was talking about…
Cosima didn't, but the more she thought about it, the more it made sense for the girl to be there. The question was, why wasn't she attacking Sarah like she did Rachel?
Cosima stood up and put her hand on Delphine's shoulder, "I'm sorry, sweetness, but we gotta go."
Delphine nodded, "No, please. I will see you later."
Cosima gave her a small smile and a kiss on the cheek before grabbing Alison's hand, starting towards bottom of the stands.
So I said end of the week, but somehow that turned into Tuesday during class. I meant for this to be much longer, but I realized that I have a fuckton of things due within two weeks (as it is time for finals now omfg), so I wanted to give y'all this before I disappear again.
Bear in mind I probably won't have any time until right before Christmas, or the end of January. So I'll try to go crazy before Christmas time.
I love you guys. Thanks for sticking with me for so long and I hope you enjoyed this chapter and I hope it made sense!
