"Wake up Wren! I know you can hear me. Wren! Oh come on you lazy bum!" A voice yelled in my ear impatiently. Next thing I know I was on the hard cold floor of my bedroom feeling much more awake, and irritated. I looked up through glaring eyes to see my best friend Natalie Cane smiling innocently back at me. She gave me a little wave and wink but frowned as she realized I was not happy to see her. After a few more seconds of absorbing the wrath of my glare she sighed and flopped onto my bed bouncing a few times. "You were ignoring me," she whined out the excuse as though it were obvious.
"I was asleep!" I yelled in disbelief.
"Well you've been asleep long enough and I'm ready to play!" She said gleefully. "Now go and have a shower, I'm taking you out," she said wiggling her eyebrows suggestively at me as she hung over the side of my bed to meet my eyes. I rolled them at her before standing up and stretching unconsciously rubbing my sore bum.
"Wait, how did you get in my apartment?" I asked finally realizing I had changed the locks on my flat last week since there was a string of robberies in the neighborhood. She simply ignored my question and gave me a mischievous grin as she pushed me towards the adjacent bathroom.
"I landed in your living room with my big blue Tardis," she said opening her arms wide to show the size amusing me to no end. "Now go and get ready before I take off and leave you here on Earth." I gasped dramatically placing my hand over my heart in pain.
"You wouldn't dare leave behind your best friend in the whole entire universe would you? "I asked in distress and she just smiled.
"Of course I wouldn't," she answered rolling her eyes amused.
"Promise?" I asked suspiciously.
"Cross my hearts and hope to be shot by River Song," She replied honestly making a fist and bringing her right arm across her chest. I mirrored her movement and we both stood there silently for a moment staring at each other with serious expression. I don't who broke first but we both burst into laughter pulling each other in a tight hug. Natalie and I are so much alike. Two nerdy, hyper, scifi enthusiasts who didn't know how to have a normal conversation without Doctor Who or Lord of The Rings references. Once we parted she gave me a pat on the bum and sent me on my way to the bathroom. After I shut the door I cut the water on scold and began undressing. "Oh and Wren by the way!" She yelled over the running water.
"Yeah?" I yelled back.
"Happy Birthday!" She screamed before bursting into song. I grinned to myself as I stepped into the shower happy with my incredible life.
After my shower I quickly got dressed in some jeans a T-shirt, and converse lastly applying a light swipe of red lipstick; my favorite. I then headed into theliving room to see Natalie slumped across my couch watching Doctor Who with what I was sure was my last bag of popcorn. I excitedly dropped down beside her making her have to scoot over much to her dismay.
"Which episode is this?" I asked seeing a commercial was now on.
"The Time Of Angels," she replied and I shivered before flipping the tv off and earning her fiercest glare. "Bloody hell Wren I was watching that!" She shouted reaching for the remote which I held out of her reach.
"So. You know that Weeping Angels give me nightmares, plus you said you were taking me out Jack," I retorted channeling my inner Kate Winslet. She groaned and rolled her eyes before standing up and slipping on her jacket mumbling a few words that would make Cybermen blush.
"Only you could be afraid of monsters on a television show Rose."
After defending my right to be scared of statues that could kill me if I wasn't looking, we ended up at the local fish n' chips shop my boyfriend Nicolas worked at for lunch. Once we were seated he immediately walked over to us with a huge smile and quickly stole a quick kiss from my lips leaving me breathless and grinning from ear to ear.
"Ew, can't you ever just come over and take our order like a normal waiter?" Nat asked with a frown earning a glare from Nick which she happily returned.
"Oh come on," I whined already exaspharated, "its been four years can't you two finally get on?" I asked frowning.
"No."
"Never."
They answered simutaniously in such complete synch that I had no idea who said which. I rolled my eyes giving up and looking over the menu, they were more than welcome to continue the Nick N' Nat show while I stuffed my face with delicious chips.
The Nick N' Nat show started exactly four years ago when I met Nick at a party and wrongly assumed that he and Nat would make a perfect couple. They were both loud, crazy, stubborn, and completely annoying but you couldn't help but love and want to be around them. So I Serenity Jessica Loagn with my excellent match making skills decided to hook them up and it was a complete disaster. The entire date they were just trying to one up each other and everything became a competition so it was no surprise when the night ended with drinks being thrown, an insult about someone's mother, and something about growing balls. Like I said, that was four years ago and they still hated each other like it was just yesterday and they still competed against one another except now it was for things like my time and attention and it definitely got annoying really quick.
"Wren I don't even know why you waste your time reading the menu you get the same thing every time. Besides, the idiot already went to put the order in," Nat said taking the menu from me and tossing it to a waitress passing by.
"Have you always been this rude?" I asked and she smirked.
"It's one of my best qualities," she joked.
"And you don't have many of them," Nick added as he walked back over to our table took a seat next to me slinging his arm around my shoulder squeezing me against him.
"Don't you two start at least not today," I said sending them a warning look.
"Fine," Nat said glaring at Nick who chose to ignore her.
"Of course love and Happy Birthday by the way," he smiled pulling a neatly wrapped present from his back pocket and handing it to me . I bounced in my seat excitedly and wasted no time tearing away the purple wrapping until I reached a box which I quickly opened. I stared at the gift confused turning it over in my hands and examining it.
"It's a belt," I said simply.
"No," Nick said as he rolled his eyes and took it from me getting up. "Stand up," he ordered and I did curious about what he was doing, "arms out," he ordered and I obeyed letting him strap the belt around my waist and then the gun holster that he hooked to the side of the belt and then around my right upper thigh.
"I look so badass!" I yelled excitedly which earned me crazy looks from various people sitting in the shop.
"No not yet you don't. You're just missing one thing," Nat said with a smile as she handed me her present from her jacket pocket. I squealed before taking it and quickly unwrapping yet another box and opening it to see a replica sonic gun.
"Oh Jack! My one true love!" I yelled as I jumped on her hugging her tightly and ignoring all the strange looks we were getting.
"Anything for you my Rose. I was going to bring you a painting of you naked but didn't want to show up your loser boyfriend."
"If you two are done on the Titanic I could aslso use a thank you," Nick said with a pout which I quickly kissed away before also pulling him into a tight hug whuch he eagerly returned. "I love you," he whispered.
"I also love you," Nat added quickly.
"You two are the most amazing people in the whole universe," I said as tears filled my eyes, "I love you both more than anything."
"Alright alright none of that," Natalie said pulling me into another hug.
Regardless of all the fighting and the constent competition I was so incredibly lucky to have her and Nick in my life as they were technically they only people in my life. Nat and I grew up in an orphanage together and while Nat's distant aunt eventually came for her when we were about seven, I remained until my eighteenth birthday. I knew little to nothing about my birth parents, only what the orpahnage wanted me to know and I'm sure they twisted the facts and gave me whatever version would hurt me the most. The orphanage fed and clothed us and never laid a hand on us but they knew other ways to be cruel. They loved to tell me how happily married and in love my parents were when they dropped me off, that my mother had unknowingly given birth to twins and was surprised when I, the second born, came out. They were surprised but quickly decided that one baby was enough for them and dropped me off at the orphanage before fleeing with my twin brother. I swallowed the lump in my throat and blinked back the tears trying to shake the memory. I squeezed Nat tighter for another moment to reagin my strength before pulling away and giving them the best smile I could muster.
"I'm ok," I said placing the gun in my holster, "do I look badass now?" I asked with a smirk and they both smiled back nodding in approval.
"Ok now there's one more present from the both of us," Nick said handing me an envelope. I looked between the two of them shocked that they got along long enough to get me something together. My hands shook as I opened it slowly unsure what more they could possibly give me. I froze as I looked at three plane tickets to America and I covered my mouth not knowing what to say.
I was speechless.
"You two did this for me?" I whispered and they smiled.
"Don't you know we'd do anything for you," Nat responded and tears filled my eyes again.
"We know how much you want to travel so we got together and decided lets the three of us do it together," Nick added.
"I love you two," I said not being able to form any other words. I took a deep breath and steadied myself. "Ok, I'm going to go cry in the bathroom," I said half jokingly as I stood up from the bathroom. I did our normal salute and crossed my right arm across my chest my fist against my heart. They returned the gesture and I headed off towards the restroom.
"Oi! You lazy bum go get our food!" I heard Nat's loud voice yell at Nick before I entered the bathroom making me chuckle.
Once I was alone I immediately swallowed back my tears and wet a paper towel to dab my eyes and face with. When I was done I checked myself over in the mirror and couldn't help but smile at the mirror approving of what I saw. A petite, brown eyed brunette who just turned twenty two, had her dream job at a bakery, a loving boyfriend, and the best friend anyone could ask for. Yes, I considered myself very lucky. As I threw the paper towel away I noticed a small present wrapped in blue paper with a white bow on top. I bit my lip deciding whether I should go anywhere near it. In the end I walked over and picked it up. I was taken by surprise to see it was addressed to me but from whom was not written. I hesitantly opened the present to find what I believed to be a time manipulator watch, something Doctor Whoish and I assumed it was from Nat. I immediately put it on and checked myself out in the mirror smiling, I looked like a real bad ass now. I pulled out my gun and aimed it at the mirror pretending to shoot, blowing on the end and slipping it back in my holster. I shook my head realizing how much of a nerd I really was.
As I went to throw the box away I spotted a small note laying inside.
"You want an adventure? Then press the red button Sunshine."
"Sunshine?" I asked aloud as the bathroom door opened revealing Nat.
"Hey your foods getting cold, you ok?" She asked before disappearing into a stall.
"Yeah I'm ok," I answered before rereading the note again and tossing it and the box in the trash. "Hey Nat, did you leave me another gift wrapped in blue paper?" I asked.
"No," she replied.
"I found a gift in here addressed to me and it had a time manipulator watch and a note that said press the red button," I confessed slightly confused.
"It's probably Nick teasing you," she offered.
"Yeah," I said not really believing it.
"Go on then push the red button and check out the future for me, let me know if I'll be a success and marry a stud," Nat joked and I laughed finally deciding and pushing the small red button. I waited for a few seconds and rolled my eyes as nothing happened, I felt dumb for actually thinking something was going to happen. "Back from the future already?" Nat asked as she opened the stall door and proceeded to wash her hands.
"I got good news and bad news," I said playing along, "you are going to be successful but about that stud you wanted to marry-" I trailed off making Natalie laugh. She turned to face me with a smile that immediately turned into a look of fright and surprise. "What's wrong?" I asked confused.
"You're-" was all she said as she continued to stare. I rolled my eyes and looked into the mirror to see my entire body glowing gold and my mouth immediately fell open. "How are you doing that?" she asked worried.
"I don't-" was all I could get out before I fell back against the wall from the unbearable pain in my head.
"Wren!" Natalie yelled as she reached out to touch me only to be shocked and sent flying across the bathroom hitting the wall.
"Nat!" I yelled worried she was hurt.
I watched desperately as she tried to pull herself up. All she was able to do was reach her hand out to me and I blindly reached back. My vision slowly turned white and the pain in my head became worse. Right before our hands met everything flashed like lightining and vanished before I hit the ground hard. I groaned rubbing my head to get rid of the dizziness that lingered.
"Ow!" I heard a woman's voice hiss in pain.
"There you see, I lied. It's a viro-stabiliser, stabilises your metabolism against radiation, drive burn, anything. You're going to need it when we get up to that ship," an unmistakable voice reached my ears.
I heard footsteps approaching and I quickly stood up only to be met face to face with the one and only River Song whom had a huge smile on her face.
"Hello Sunshine."
