"Sitwell said you needed me." Natasha said as she came into Maria's office. "And did you notice that he seems to have picked up a nervous tic where he keeps turning his head to look behind him every five seconds? He's going to sprain something if it keeps up much longer."
"That isn't a nervous tic. That's fear that Director Carter might be sneaking up on him." Maria grumbled. "Rogers suggested that she might try to hide in plain sight so I need you to make a discreet search of the building."
"There's a chance she could be in here?" Nat said. "I hope Rumlow doesn't find out that's a possibility. He was actually researching flights to Antarctica after the last Red Fedora incident. I'm pretty sure that if he thinks there's any chance he might be in the same building as her, he's going to stow away on one in the hopes of a few months of safety."
"That's why I need a discreet search of the building, although if we get out of this with the only thing we have to deal with being Rumlow fleeing in the mistaken belief that Peggy Carter couldn't find her way to Antarctica if she wanted, I will count it as a minor miracle."
"Sitwell said something about running some exercises, so hopefully that will keep any potential fleeing limited for awhile. You would think that the Director or Sharon would have figured some way to signal us if Peggy amused herself dragging them in here, though." Romanov said with a frown.
"It's Peggy Carter, with Agent May's mother along as an accessory. I can't rule anything out with Peggy alone and with who she has helping her…."
"True. Does Melinda know what her mother's been up to?"
"Oh, yes, since our merry senior citizens amused themselves stealing Andrew Garner's car as part of their growing crime spree. And they did this after kidnapping Rosalind Price. One of her underlings is lurking around here somewhere, wanting information. Avoid him if you can. I had someone escort him to the break room and lock him in. Hopefully he's still there. In case Peggy actually is in here somewhere, I would very much like to try to keep Mister Banks out of her potential clutches."
"Makes sense. What about other possible locations if she isn't here?" Romanov asked, getting down to business. "Sharon's apartment, maybe? It would make a certain kind of sense with Rogers next door, or he would be next door if he wasn't off at the Hub. I could see Peggy wanting to drop in on him if she didn't know he was gone."
"And I am suddenly very thankful for Tony Stark and his idea of personally delivering supplies because Peggy does not need any more accomplices and Rogers would become an accomplice for sure." If not for his little ice encounter, Maria was pretty sure those Peggy and Stark clauses in most insurance policies would have been joined by a Rogers clause. "At least Stark prevented that. That's one good thing he's managed. Sharon's apartment would make sense, though. If the search here doesn't turn up anything, try there."
"Any other ideas for where she could have gotten off to? Have you thought about the British embassy?" Nat asked. "I heard Wisdom might be in town."
"We have eyes on it, although Wisdom isn't there at the moment. Keep an eye out for him, and if you run into him before you find Peggy, warn him off, please, because I am not sure if the property insurances ever dropped the Peggy clause and Washington does not need a reenactment of the War of 1812."
"So you want me to find Director Carter and her victims, make sure she doesn't hook up with Pete Wisdom and set the town on fire and…."
"And get them back here! Do not try to divert her. Do not try to humor her. Do not try to play along with her! Just get Director Carter, Melinda's mom and their three victims back here before they somehow make this disaster any worse!" An although she wasn't sure exactly how things could get worse at this point, Maria knew that with every second Peggy was on the loose the odds of disaster were mounting.
"Find Peggy and apprehend her. Got it. Here, Sharon's, possibly wherever Pete Wisdom's got himself off to, which I'm guessing is some place that will have alcohol involved. Any other ideas?" Suddenly something occurred to her. "Could she have snuck back into the nursing home? That's where she's supposed to be, so who would think to check there for her and a few prisoners?"
"Check it. And Rogers and Stark are trying to come up with some other ideas. I'll call you with any updates. Just find her and do it quietly!" Natasha was the best they had when it came to this sort of thing. Surely if there was anyone who could locate Peggy and get her and her victims back without a disaster it would be the Black Widow.
"No, we're fine for the moment, but if we decide that we do need air transport I'll let you know. If you could just arrange to pass that message along to Mister Wisdom, please. I'm sure he'll have an idea for how to handle things." Peggy said as she talked on the burner phone. "Just have him arrange to get her out and let her know to stay off the grid until I get in touch. I'm not sure where I'll need her yet, but she will be helpful. Oh, and tell Wisdom he might want to ask her about Kennedy. She always said she knew who really killed Kennedy and I know that Harold was always curious about that. No, I'm not sure if she actually does know but I'm sure Wisdom's father will have fun with it. Yes, love to the family!"
"Such a good girl." Peggy said as she ended the call and shot a look at locked door, that said without words that the niece she had trapped was definitely not in that category.
"So she's going to help?" Lian asked as she finished pulling together a meal out of the supplies on hand, and topped it off with glasses filled from Dottie Underwood's rather interesting looking liquor supply.
"Katie's more than happy to pass along any messages that I need. She's going to get a message through to Wisdom and arrange to have Dottie collected." Peggy told her as she dropped onto the couch and picked up the glass. Really, she didn't know why it hadn't occurred to her earlier to swing by and pick up Dottie but that was a little oversight that was easily corrected.
"Any ideas for what to do with her?" Lian asked.
"I'm tempted to set her on those news stations that have the idea that Nick's the one in charge here for some reason, but for now I sent a message to stay off the grid. She'll either do that or possibly show up here. Either one will work."
"I'm not sure that her showing up here will work for your niece, not that Melinda would be any better." Lian said with a shake of her head as she looked at the locked door for a moment before turning to food and drink.
"I know. Honestly, I don't know what Nick's teaching the agents these days. So nervous." Peggy told her. "Things were never like that in my day."
"Which is why I'm not checking my messages. I can just imagine what Melinda's saying."
"At least she hasn't tried to take away your guns." Peggy grumbled. Not that taking away said weapons had worked, of course, but still, it was the very thought that annoyed her.
"Melinda does seem to have better sense than to try that so far." Lian said. Although she had a feeling that if she checked her messages there would be at least one who would be a threat to do exactly that. "So, Dottie's handled then. That's good. She's always interesting to work with, and I heard Stark isn't home at the moment so there won't be anything on that front to distract her."
"Howard did have a way with making people want to kill him." Peggy agreed. "Dottie's handled. And from what my friend Ruthie said, it seems like no one in Washington has a clue what's going on, so for the moment we this location should be secure. Katie did offer to send her husband over if we decide we need air transport. And his brother. Such a nice boy. He knows how to drive tanks. We probably should see where the nearest supply depots might be in case it turns out we need them."
"If we do, I vote that we visit the base Glenn Talbot's in charge of." Lian said. "Such an annoying man."
"Not as annoying as that Ross that he was playing flunky to a few years ago, but still annoying." Peggy agreed. "I'm sure that Dottie has the equipment to do a little checking on what Talbot's in charge of. Might as well get the information now in case we need to pay him a little visit."
