I'd like to begin this with an apology. I haven't been on in a long, long time and I'm very sorry for not updating. I've been dealing with really big news that requires most of my time and energy. I've also had a lot with school and such. I found out I'll be moving shortly. It wouldn't be such a big deal, but considering its Canada and I currently live in in America, the move will be all but little. Your patience and understanding on updating would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all and I'm sorry once again.
The room was silent, and Mello's question lingered in the air. Fate squirmed under the immense amount of tension in the room.
"Have you gone deaf? Do I need to repeat myself? "Mello was persistent, Matt knew that. But Matt also knew Fate was not one who enjoyed being interrogated.
"Mello-"
"No, Matt. I'm not letting her get out of this one. It was L. L came to see Fate, You can't tell me he didn't need something." Mello was quick to snap at Matt. It was something Matt was used to, yet he still felt a slight sting at the fact the he hadn't been able to start his sentence, let alone finish it.
"And why should I tell you?" Fate voiced in. "You've been nothing but rude to me. Rude and arrogant and just plain insulting. What did I ever do to you?"
"YOU DON'T DESERVE HIM!" Fate went silent at Mello's outburst. Mello was beyond furious; his chocolate bar lay forgotten on the floor, while his fists were clenched and slowly turning white.
"Excuse me?" Fate knew Mello had a temper on him, but she had never seen him so angry just because somebody called him rude. She was only telling the truth.
"You always get it all. 2nd in line at Wammy's, you get Matt as your best friend even though he was mine first, and you get L showing up at your damn door. How the hell is that fair?" Fate stayed silent, watching as Mello took deep breaths, attempting to calm himself.
"I didn't realize you felt this way, Mello." Fate replied quietly.
"Of course you didn't." He spat. "Never mind, I'm out." With one final glare, Mello exited the room. Matt looked on after him.
"Go. Be with him." Fate spoke.
"Fate." Matt protested.
"No," she looked up at Matt. "He needs you right now. He needs to know he still has you. Go, reassure him." They stood like that for what felt like forever, looking into each other's eyes, both looking for something unknown to either of them. Finally, Matt looked away and headed towards the door.
"Fate?" He paused at the doorway.
"Yeah?"
"You're pretty amazing." And just like that, Matt disappeared down the hallway. Fate fell back onto her bed readjusting her signature goggles. She couldn't help the slight smile that crossed her face.
Matt ran his hand through his hair. He'd been searching for ages, but still no sign of Mello. He'd just about given up when he turned the last corner of Whammy's, but there sat Mello with his eyes closed and his head against the wall.
"Mello?" Mello's eyes snapped open to look at Matt. Matt stood awkwardly; he was never good in tense situations.
"I'm not going to apologize to her." He closed his eyes again.
"That's not why I'm here."
"Well that's a surprise." Mello muttered.
"Is that why you hate her so much?" Matt inquired.
"Obviously." Even in his saddened state, Mello never lost his snarky attitude. Matt moved over to Mello and slid down the wall to sit alongside him. They sat like that, neither of them saying a word. It was a comfortable silence. A reassuring one.
Nothing had changed by the next morning. In fact, it was as if Mello's outburst hadn't happened at all. Fate, Matt, and Mello all sat at their usual table while Fate and Matt chattered on with Mello adding in his usual sarcastic remarks. Mello hadn't asked about L again, but Fate knew he wouldn't let it go that easily.
"Matt," she turned to look at the redhead. "I need to show you something."
"What is it?"
"Just, c'mon." Matt got up and began to follow Fate. She glanced back to see Mello continuing to sit. "You can come too, if you'd like, Mello." He hesitated, but then got up and followed as well. Fate led them all the way up to her room and commanded them to take a seat.
"Anywhere you'd like, there's a bit of a mess." It wasn't far from the truth; papers were scattered on the floor while other supplies littered the entire room. Matt sat on her bed while Mello took a seat on the neighboring desk chair.
"Matt, I always see you eying my goggles. I know you envy me for having them." Mello snickered. Matt stayed silent as a light blush crossed his cheeks. "We are gathered here today, in my room, to give Matt an honorary pair of his own." Mello cracked up at this point, laughing so much he wasn't able to breathe. Fate held up a pair of orange goggles, only slightly different from her own blue ones. She walked over to Matt and held them out.
"See, I wear them on top of my head, but I think they'd look better worn properly on you." So, Matt took the googles and put them on. After adjusting them, he looked back up at Fate and Mello.
"Are you shitting me?" Mello continued to cackle, thoroughly amused with the situation.
"I shit you not, Mello. And that's not all." Fate held out her hands adorned with black gloves. The kind where the cut off at your wrist and just before your mid finger.
"Now, I present you with your very own pair of gloves." Fate turned and dug around for a bit before handing Matt a very different pair of gloves. They stayed black, but instead of cutting off, they covered his fingers and reached up to his elbows.
"Matt, you look like a proper mess, just as you should." Fate grinned.
"A proper mess? How the hell do you even come up with these things?" Mello quieted his laughter but continued to smirk.
"I think I like it." Matt spoke.
"Do you really?" Fate looked down at Matt. He sat on her bed while she stood in front. He was usually taller than her, so it was different seeing her from this angle. She looked….nice. In that moment, Matt realized he felt something for Fate. Something much more than friendship. When he looked at other girls, he didn't feel the butterflies like he did when he saw Fate. She was something else entirely.
"Absolutely."
Yes this is another A/N *cringe* but I feel as though I started the chapter on a rather heavy note. So I suppose I'm here now to make it better? Also, I do still need a disclaimer.
Matt: Okay but when do we find out Fate's name?!
Me: Oh right welll you'll just have to wait and see. Good job on all of your guesses, though :D.
Also, a special thanks to Sandafairy for giving me the push I needed to start writing again, one chapter at a time (: .
Near: Mea does not own Death Note or any of it's characters, only Fate.
Me: Gosh dang it Near you're too cute.
