"I'm going to ask this one last time, where is he?"
His teeth gritted together, holding back the hisses desperately wanting to escape his lips. "I swear I dunno anything. We just get the orders and—"
Another bullet shot into his leg, a shriek leaving his lips but he bit his tongue hard enough that he could taste blood in his mouth. Crimson eyes narrowed down at him, a spiked tail pressing against his neck as he peered upwards, trembling against the cold wall, not daring to swallow the lump stuck in his throat.
Bloodlust tilted her head slightly, glancing across the warehouse, inhaling the blood scented air as she tugged the gun back into its holster. "Where," she began dangerously, shooting the man before her a dull, withering glare, "is the Joker?"
He stared, hands pressed against the bullet holes, trying to slow the leakage of blood from his legs as his eyes searched around hopefully, his face pale upon the sight of his allies, now nothing but corpses lying on the blood tainted concrete. The sharp tail on his neck shifted, his breath hitching as he felt it push hard against his Adam's apple.
"I'm tellin' you," he uttered, "we just get the orders. I dunno where he is!"
"The Joker escaped from Arkham with his little girlfriend a week ago," she mused loudly, scrutinizing him. "You're one of his best men, Skylar. So how can it be..." The point of her tail slid across his throat gently, sending chills down his spine.
Bloodlust set her hands on her hips, "that you don't know where he's hiding, hmm?"
"I-I heard that he's got some hideout near crime alley!" He responded, sighing inwardly as he peeked up the monster before him through tufts of black hair. "That's all I know, I swear. Now can you please let me go?"
Red eyes went flat, fixing him with a pressing look as the woman hummed thoughtfully, but blinked as sirens of police cars disrupted the silence of the cold night, closing in quickly. Her gaze drifted towards the enormous ajar door of the warehouse, red and blue lights flashing and her dark tail jerked forward, the man on the floor releasing a gasp as it slit across his neck like a knife cutting smoothly through butter.
With a mere flick of her bloodied tail behind her, Bloodlust stuttered off, the cold air greeting her scaly skin as she trudged outwards and away as the police cars halted neared the crime scene.
The faint clicking of a door was heard, a frown marring her face but she continued folding the stack of clothes before her neatly, placing them on the foot of her bed when someone cleared their throat loudly, and she spared a glance over her shoulder, then resumed her work.
"Ever heard of knocking?"
"Where are you going?" Jason countered, observing the open suitcases resting on the floor. He narrowed his eyes when the blonde bounced her shoulders, her back facing him. "I'm leaving."
"Yeah, right." He scoffed, leaning his back against the wall and crossing his arms across his broad chest. "Like Bruce is gonna let you."
"I already talked to him. He said I can leave if I want to."
He blinked, arching a brow. "You're lying, right? 'Cause last time I checked, Bruce doesn't want you going telling everyone about he's Batman."
"Like I said, I've got permission. I can leave whenever I want."
Jason paused, settling her with a curious look, "so you're really leaving?" He inquired again, and Kate rolled her eyes, putting away the folded clothes over one another as she turned around, hands shifting on her hips. "I'll keep visiting Blake in the hospital and anyway," she shrugged, "he's a lot more safe with you guys."
"Where're you gonna go?"
The question rang in her ears, and she raised her brows, dropping on the foot of her bed and set the male before her with a cheeky grin. "Don't tell me you're gonna miss me, Jason."
He gazed down simply, the ends of his lips curling upwards into a smirk as he fished something out of his pocket, then tossed the object at her. Kate's eyes widened momentarily and she quickly caught whatever it was, then blinked once, surprised that they were a pair of silver keys.
"Since I doubt you've got some place arranged," he mused, tipping his head back. "You can crash at my apartment 'till you find some other place to live later."
Sky blue eyes peered upwards, meeting his dark green irises and he shrugged nonchalantly. "The place is pretty clean, if that's what your worried about, and you don't have to be scared of anyone robbing you there too. It's pretty safe."
Kate fumbled with the cool keys, observing them keenly. "Wow," she grinned, "never knew you cared about me, Jason."
He released a snort, but then smirked cockily, "it's the least I could do for a girl who used to have a crush on me since I was a kid."
Amusement flickered in his eyes as the blonde before him stared owlishly, letting his words sink in when the corners of her mouth tugged downwards. "Did Blake tell you that?" She asked, annoyance clear in her voice.
A cheeky grin split his lips, and Jason clicked his tongue. "Maybe."
"Oh, my God," Kate let out a frustrated sigh, thrusting her hands through her golden locks, combing the strands of hair back with her fingers. "I don't have feelings for you anymore, Jason."
"Is it because I came back from the dead?"
"What? No! It's just that..."
An unrecognizable emotion flickered across his features, and Kate gripped the keys tighter in her hand as he strolled closer, standing infront of her, leaning his torso forward with his hands stuffed into the pockets of his jacket. Mossy green eyes gazed downwards into pale blue hues, and Jason cocked his slightly, "just what, Rapunzel?"
Her gaze, however; flicked upwards, briefly eying the tuft of snowy white locks between his ebony hair when she grimaced, leveling her gaze with him once more. "I'm a monster, Jason."
"Really?" He snorted, unamused. "Didn't know monsters could look so pretty."
"Appearances can be deceiving."
"Hey, you don't have to make shitty excuses like that if you don't—"
"I do like you, Jason." He blinked, adjusting to the sincerity of her words as Kate sighed deeply, leaning back on her palms, settling him with a cold, steely stare. "But you don't wanna get involved with a monster like me."
He frowned, "stop calling yourself tha—"
"You don't know me at all, Jason."
"Then I'll like to know you."
Kate halted, pale blue eyes flaring up with surprise, nails digging into the mattress beneath her as Jason scowled slightly, his brows scrunching together. "What's wrong, Kate?" He inquired softly, "what's got you so troubled all the time?"
Her hands curled into fists, a shuddering breath leaving her as a numbness rose in her chest. "What if I told you," she ran her tongue across her bottom lip, "that I did something— something that I shouldn't have done..." She chewed the insides of her cheeks, gazing upwards. "Will you forgive me for it?"
Sharp green irises stared flatly, Jason contemplating his answer. "It depends," he responded honestly, his gaze smoldering. "If it's worth forgiving or not."
The brutal honesty of his answer wasn't surprising at all, a strange feeling curling in the pit of her stomach as she squeezed her eyes shut, her hand reaching outwards and spreading flat against his chest, the rhythmic beat of his heart under her palm as she gently pushed, "that settles it then," she shoved him backwards, letting him stand straight with taut shoulders and knitted brows. "We can't make this work, Jason."
She refused to break eye contact as pale blue hues gazed upwards, while he stared down at her, his brows creasing ever so slightly when he nodded, turning on his heel and Kate watched as he retreated, twisting open the doorknob but then paused in the doorway, giving her one final glance.
"Dickhead's birthday is coming up this week, try to stick around 'till then, kay?"
And with that, the door clicked shut, Kate waiting for the heavy footsteps to disappear in the hallway, until once again silence descended upon her and she leaned backwards, resting on the king sized bed, the warmth and coziness of the sheets suddenly so foreign for her as she kept her icy gaze on the ceiling, her grip on the keys loosening.
