Chapter 12

Darkness.

"…"

Is it like this when you die? Not at all bad, though. It was a confusing-mixed-up feeling. Dizziness, lack of sense and direction, flowing through nowhere at all, Ciel found himself floating in darkness. What a short life. He thought. Thirteen years of living, hatred and selfishness. His life was wasted. Inside his head, thoughts were rushing through. No. Memories.

He was a little boy. A boy who had everything. His mom, his dad, and Elizabeth were sitting in the living room with him. He was playing toys with his lovely cousin, wearing a sailor costume, running around all over the place with joy on his face.

"Mommy, look! I made this!" The young Ciel said climbing onto the sofa between his parents, showing his mother a wooden boat made out of small bricks. Lady Phantomhive smiled, and she patted his head.

"You did well, Ciel. Just like your father, you're so smart and cute." She pointed her finger at Ciel's tiny nose. "And so naughty." She added. Earl Phantomhive laughed, and he lifted Ciel up, while the boy pouted.

"Come here, Lizzy. You two did well." Then he picked up a book on the couch, and opened it. "And today, I shall tell you a very interesting story about Santa Claus." He smiled. His smile was just as bright and similar as Ciel's.

"Ooh! Santa! Isn't that a kind old man who dresses in red and gives you gifts on Christmas?" Elizabeth said enthusiastically, her eyes sparkled.

"I know, I know! Santa gives you presents only if you're nice and kind to other people! Mom, am I good?" He asked Rachel Phantomhive with excitement. His father, Vincent Phantomhive, giggled and hugged both him and Elizabeth.

"Yes, yes, you are. Ciel and Lizzy are both good and nice children, isn't it Lizzy?" He winked at the little blonde girl.

"Yup, yup!" Lizzy nodded, smiling brightly.

"Say…it's Christmas in two weeks' time. And Ciel's birthday is on the 14th, which is next Saturday! Wow, I think we should celebrate!" Rachel said, clapping her hands together. Ciel and Lizzy looked at each other, delight on their happy faces.

"My birthday! Ooh ooh, so can I have gifts? A big bunny one? The real big one, daddy?" He looked at his father. Vincent smiled, and patted his head.

"Only if you are a good boy!" He chuckled.

"I will! I will, daddy, so when you give me my Mister Bunny, I would share him with Lizzy, so we can play with each other, right, Lizzy?" He turned to Elizabeth.

"Yes, yes!" She laughed, and they all laughed, cuddling inside the warm living room.

The vision blurred, and Ciel found himself lying on the ground. What he was looking at was a frozen river. Snow was still falling, but it seemed like it was not cold at all. He was inside of his soul once more, and this time he knew for sure that he was not going to return. Tears were trickling on the edge of his eyes. The memory about his happy family was pouring back, invading his mind. He missed them. The days when he was so innocent and happy. He would have had been like that for now, but God took them away, and so that was how it is.

"Mother, father…now that I would see you again soon…I have avenged you…" He gritted his teeth. But then he remembered, he cannot go to heaven with them. He had been bounded by a demon. Living in grief and sins, about all the crimes he had made…he wouldn't see them. The memories started to stream through the river once more.

"Just how long are you going to play dead like a raccoon?" Ciel asked. He was being abducted by Master Vener, the head of the Ferro family. Sebastian had just been shot, lying still on the floor. Ciel remembered this part of his memory.

"This is an order: save meee!" Ciel yelled. BAAANG. Venor took a shot, and at that time Ciel thought he would have been dead already. But now looking back at it, he could see clearly himself, being tied up by the wicked man, and Sebastian appeared suddenly behind him, catching the bullet just in time.

"As long as the young Master has the sign of the 'contract', I am his faithful servant. 'Sacrifice', 'desire', and thus, I am bound to my Master through the contract." Sebastian said, showing his left hand where his mark laid on. Ciel remembered those words.

"It's a shame, but…this is game over." He, himself said. Ciel stood grounded for a moment. The day when Sebastian made a contract with him, Ciel had been really scared. He was hesitating before making a contract. He knew that demons were wicked, and sometimes they lied to humans. Ciel didn't even think of this day, when he had already fallen in love with the demon. Was that also a lie? He did not know. What was the purpose of demons? Tricks. Fools. Deceiving. What can guarantee Ciel of Sebastian's honesty?

He shook his head. The visions flickered fast, showing all kinds of memories from him, all the people that he had met in his life. Ciel just grinned when he saw Soma and Agni, the two Indians.

"…wonder what they are doing now?" He asked himself. He saw Grell, William and Undertaker in his visions. The three of them made him sick, but he had his time enjoying them fooling around. And he saw Sebastian. Ciel staggered. He wouldn't want to see his butler. No, he wasn't his butler anymore. Ciel wasn't an Earl anymore. He's a dead person.

The images showed Grell flirting with Sebastian, wearing the weird costume that Ciel saw earlier. Ciel giggled, his eyes getting heavier. Then he saw Sebastian hugging him tightly, and kissing him. His heart thumped, and he laughed.

"Wahhahahahaha! Oh this is so funny! Did I look like that when he was force-kissing me? Whoa, I looked like an idiot, hah! Hahahaha! Hah…hah…" Tears were streaming down his face, and Ciel didn't even notice. He bit his lips, bitter.

"WAHHHHHHH!" He cried. He missed Sebastian. He hated Sebastian. Ciel wished he never fell in love with that wicked demon in the first place. Now he felt like Sebastian was leaving him behind. Did Sebastian survive? What would he do, now that I was dead? Ciel thought to himself, his visions got blurry because of tears.

"Sebastian…you jerk! I hate you! I wish I never see you again! Wahh!" he yelled. His voiced echoed through the space, and the wind swooshed past him.

"Is that so…my Lord?" A voice came out. Ciel froze. Did I just hear…?! No, no, never. Ciel shook his head. He turned over and saw a dark figure, standing on a chunk of stone beside the frozen lake.

This figure, again. These crimson eyes, again. This black hair, again. The look on his face, again.

"Se…Sebastian!" Ciel exclaimed in shock. "How…who…when…" His voice got stuck inside his throat. He dashed forward and hugged Sebastian.

"You! Why are you here…I thought you lived! Wait…are you just my imagination? Yeah…probably…I always get hallucinations…" He lowered his voice. Sebastian lifted his head and smiled.

"Yes, I did indeed survive, my Lord. But no, I am not an imagination. I am a memory, Master. A memory from which you recalled the most of." He bowed. "And also, I am the part inside Sebastian's soul, deep inside him, that stores all of the deepest secrets, and feelings."

"So did you take my blood then? Did you kill the other demon?" Ciel asked, for he felt surprised that Sebastian could be here even though he did not die.

"Ah." Sebastian said. "The truth is…you have been mistaken, my Lord. It was you who took my blood, and I was the one who passed away, not you."

Ciel frowned. "What?" His ears just didn't work. "Can you repeat that?" He asked stupidly.

Sebastian flicked his hand. "Ah. Let me take you back to that day, my Lord." Then suddenly, the lake, the snow, everything disappeared. Ciel was left amongst darkness. He lost his balance.

"Wait…what, wahhhhhhhhhhhh!" He fell freely down the pitch black space, and it went on forever. He did not see Sebastian, so he screamed.

"SEBASTIAN COME BACK HERE! WHAT IS THIS MESS?! ARE YOU TRYING TO- OUCHH!" He landed a thud on the ground. "…Eh?" Ciel looked around. He was back in his mansion. He saw Sebastian cooking in the kitchen.

"Oi, Sebastian, what is this? Why are you taking me here? And why is this mansion not ruined? I thought…hey, Sebastian!" He growled, being annoyed because Sebastian ignored him. He walked nearer towards him.

"Oi, do you hear me-" BOOOOM. There was a big explosion. The ground shook and both of them fell onto the ground.

"WHAT THE-" Sebastian exclaimed as he heard an exploding sound upstairs. He opened the kitchen door. Smoke came flowing in everywhere. Then he rushed upstairs. Ciel followed him. As he recalled, the present Ciel now has been changing his clothes in his room, then someone just blew the window up.

"Master!" Sebastian yelled. Then suddenly, Ciel saw someone in the darkness, raising a blade from behind him.

"Sebastian…look out!" Ciel yelled. But too late, Sebastian did not hear him, and he laid onto the floor. He had just scrambled up when another foot stomped him down onto the ground again.

"Do not move, demon. I'll kill you." Came a voice. Ciel recognized this.

"Claude Faustus?" He was shocked. Claude came to Ciel's mansion, for what? Ciel knew the both of them couldn't hear him, so he watched.

Sebastian attempted to turn over, but Claude raised his knives and stabbed him on the back. Ciel cried "Nooo!", and blood came flowing out.

"Tie him up, and locked him away, Annie." Claude said. There came another demon, and she put chains on Sebastian's body. Then she touched the chains and hummed in a low melody, and the chains seemed to glow.

"Huh, you think these could keep me in?" Sebastian mocked. He attempted to lunge out, but then let out a groan of pain.

"Urghhhhhhhh!" He yelled. The chains seemed like they stung him, his coat was being melted and his skin went red.

"Hah, you can't get away. These chains were enchanted. You can't get out until I let you. If you tried to, you'll just burn yourself up." Claude smirked.

"What….what do you want from me?" Sebastian glared at him.

"Um…nothing, really. I just couldn't let you claim the boy's soul so easily. He's downright delicious. Now just leave everything to me, and I shall let you go." Claude simply said, he instructed Annie to get Sebastian away, and himself raised his palm and covered his face. Then he mumbled something, and black smoke came out between his hands. When Claude was done, Ciel was shocked.

He looked exactly identical to Sebastian.

"Oh my Lord…" Ciel gasped. Claude has been disguising Sebastian all those times?

"Hmmm…how do I look?" He asked.

"Hah, you two are like twins!" Said Annie. "Now what I have to do is just finish off this jerk." She laughed.

"That is up to you." Claude said, in the face of Sebastian. "Oh, I almost forgot, my glasses." Then he took them out, and put them in his pocket.

"Geez…I have to change my clothes." And as he said, he raised his hands. Black smoke again covered his body, and for a moment, Ciel thought Sebastian was coming out from the smokes.

"Right then." He said. Then he lunged up the stairs, and banged open the door that led to Ciel's room. Ciel saw himself lying on the floor, a bit unconscious. Then everything seemed to twist, and the next thing Ciel realized was that he saw Grell.

The shinigami was humming in his red-decorated room. And also he was polishing his nails. There came a loud bang on the door, and he jumped, that ruined his polish.

"Good heavens! What now, don't you see the 'No disturbing sign'?!" He stomped towards the door, and opened it. Ciel saw Annie standing right there.

"Uh…excuse me, but do I know you!?" He growled. Annie smiled, and her eyes glowed red.

"Ewwww! A demon! What the-? What is one of you doing here?!" He tended to slam the door, but the girl blocked its path with her gun. They pointed towards Grell's forehead.

"Ehhh!? O…Okay…easy, easy. I didn't say that you can't come in, though, but-" Grell winced.

"I don't have much time. But I have a request." She said. "I'm asking you to co-operate."

"Co-operate? What? You sounded serious." A drop of sweat trickled down Grell's face.

"I believe you know a demon called 'Sebastian'?" She asked coldly. Grell's eyes sparkled.

"Ooh yes, I know him pretty darn well! What's with him?" Grell asked.

"Well, his 'Master', the little boy, we are in our way of stealing his soul. So we tied the demon up, and now my…friend, is disguising as him, to deceive the boy. I just want you to keep your mouth shut and stay silent." She explained.

Grell seemed confused. "But why though? I don't have any business of you people! Why should I? Besides, how long do you think you're gonna take before everyone realize? And why me?"

"Well, I don't want to quarrel, so I'm just saying this: I know you shinigami's hate demons. And as myself, I hate others who block my way. So I'll kill you. But I'll tell you this. We just want the boy's soul, so we won't mess with you." She insisted. Grell hesitated.

"What about the others?" He asked. "Won't they allow demons in this territory?"

"That." Annie stood straight up. "Is your business. Persuading, begging, and do whatever you may please. But I'll kill anyone who stands in the way. If you want to protect them, explain it to them."

The redheaded shinigami swallowed, and he looked away, sweating. "Fine, whatever, I just want my Sebas-chan, so I don't really care, as long as I got paid for my work."

Annie smirked. "Huh, you're easy to persuade." And she held up a golden key. "And as a reward, you can take charge of your love, or, whatever you call that. Key's right here." She tinkled the key.

"What?" Grell raised his eyebrow, confused. Annie put her palm on her face, shaking her head.

"Ugh, I said, you can come to my manor right now. Sebastian's been locked up, and you can do whatever with him. But if you don't want to be shot in the head, don't remove the chains. I've enchanted them"

She said. "Oh, and I have this for you." Raised her hand with a suit: glittering red shirts and shorts, red high heels and…make-up stuff?!

"Oh WOW! Can I take those? Please?" Grell's eyes sparkled like stars.

Annie laughed. "Claude told me that with these, you can hardly resist. And it actually worked…" She smirked. "Well, the rest is up to you. And swear: you never talked to me."

"Oh yes, yes, certainly. Now I've got some business to do, mind me~" And as he said, he slammed the door. The vision twisted again, and Ciel saw the scene that happened just not very long ago.

Ciel-from-the-past was lying on the ground, bleeding. He saw himself crawling next to the-fake-Sebastian, Claude, and just as Ciel told Claude to take his blood.

"Take it…hurry…my blood." Claude was actually smirking at that moment, and Ciel saw him glancing at Annie. The demon girl nodded, and grinned evilly.

"Finally..." She said. But the door banged open. And Ciel saw Sebastian-the real Sebastian. So that wasn't his imagination that he saw two Sebastians. One was actually Claude in disguise.

"I think you got the wrong person, Master." That was what he said. Then Sebastian shot a knife that knocked Claude away from Ciel. Annie raised her guns.

"You! You bas-" Before she could say anything, Claude interrupted. "No need to, Annie. The boy's dead." Sebastian looked down on Ciel horribly.

"Master! He cried out. Then he lunged forward and tugged Ciel in. "No. NO! You can't DIE yet!" He shook Ciel's body.

"Hah, let's go. End of the game. Stupid, I've waste my time into nothing. But then, this demon couldn't take his soul, either. HAH!" The two of them mocked sarcastically. Sebastian shot a deadly look at them, and he mumbled.

"No…there's still another way…" He said. The look on Annie's face changed.

"What?!...You, you're, joking, right?" She said. A drop of sweat trickled down her head. Sebastian stood up.

"No. That's exactly what I meant." He pierced through her eyes. "I'm going to revived young Master, by my blood." He said.

Annie's eyes widened. "Are you crazy? That's breaking the rules! You'll DIE doing that, you lunatic demon!" She shouted.

"Why do you care?" Sebastian retorted. "Demons' blood could cure humans, because they turn humans into demons. But I'll die, sure. But I don't care, because I love my Master!" His eyes were persistent. Annie swallowed, and she just turned away, without saying anything more. The look on her face was disgusting, and she exited the door.

Sebastian sat down and hugged Ciel. "Master, you lied. You told me that you'll never leave me. But I keep my promise, I'll never leave you." He bit hard on his hand. Red blood poured out.

"This is breaking the rules, and I broke the rules twice, so I guess I'll really die… But don't worry, as long as you're alive, young Master…I don't care." Sebastian sucked the blood in his palm, and placed his lips onto Ciel. That was a passionate kiss, and the present-Ciel felt like he was useless. He couldn't say a word. The last thing he saw, was Sebastian dissolving into black feathers, and the vision blurred, leaving Ciel back onto the frozen lake.

He was so stunned. Everything was terribly wrong from the very start. From the part when Sebastian insisted they go to the shinigami's, all had been fake.

"Se…Sebastian…I…" Ciel said blabbering. Sebastian put a hand on his cheek.

"I am so sorry, Master. But it was true that I have been locked up. I couldn't escape from the chains, but then when I saw Grell coming, I had just a plan." Sebastian said.

"It was easy to trick Grell into loosening the chains, but it was really the part when I sensed that you, were being possessed by Claude, that I broke out and landed immediately onto the ground of the building." Ciel shuddered. He was in the middle of doing 'that thing' with…Claude when he heard the explosion coming from the ground. He knew that the dark figure he saw was Sebastian, but before Ciel could think, Claude pulled him away. Now that he's done it, he felt despair.

"Damn it!" He cursed. "I should have realized it was Claude long ago! I should have felt weird when he was able to reverse the broken ceiling back together, and when he pinned between his nose, I would have known that because he was used to wearing glasses!" Sure, people who wear glasses always do that. Ciel leaned his head on his palm, looking terrible.

"Really…what have I done…" He said. Then he just realized that Sebastian should have been dead, he asked. "Wait…you're...you're not really, dead, are you?" He asked, hoping Sebastian was just kidding. Ciel would wake up with Sebastian next to him, and they could return to the mansion, as if nothing ever happened.

"No. I am a memory, and in reality, the Sebastian you know, is already…dead." This disappointed Ciel. Then suddenly Sebastian started to dissolve into black feathers too.

"No. NO!" Ciel yelled, grabbing Sebastian. "I demand you: stay with me!" Teeth clenching, eyes stinging, he shouted. "Do you hear me? This is an order!" He was panic, as Sebastian started to disappear faster and faster, his legs were no longer visible.

"YOU PROMISED ME!" He shouted, fighting back his tears. Sebastian clutched Ciel's face with both of his hands, and said. "Master…I…"

"CALL MY NAME! SAY IT!" Ciel yelled desperately. The last time, he wanted to hear Sebastian call him. Sebastian smiled, and he placed a kiss on Ciel's forehead.

"Ciel…Phantomhive…I love you."

He woke up. And he saw the white ceiling. He smelled alcohol, like the smell you often smell in a hospital. His visions were blurry. Ciel was crying.

"…" He raised his right hand. It ached, and he had to put it down again because he didn't have enough force to hold it up on the air. What came flowing into his mind now was that he was back to three years ago. The same old feeling.

It feels like he had lost something vital and important to his life. It was exactly like when he lost his parents. Now there was no one else: no demons, no revenging. He just don't want to get involved anymore.

"… I'm so despising myself… why didn't I die already?" Ciel said, almost whispering. Why live, though, when I already lost everything? The first thing Ciel thought was that to kill himself.

Yeah… it would be better. I could see Sebastian again. A voice rang inside his head. He smiled. Yeah, why not? Ciel sat up, wincing as his wound on his right chest ached. He looked around.

It was the infirmary inside the Shinigami Dispatch Group. And he still couldn't escape from this reality. He walked, nearly crawled, towards the double-door window. And he accidentally walked pass a mirror. Ciel glanced over, and looked at himself.

Both of his eyes were blue.

"What…" He touched his right eye. "What…no…this can't be…! No!" The contract mark was already gone. What's left of 'Sebastian', was gone. The proof that Sebastian existed, was gone.

"No…" A drop of tear streamed down. His eyes were swollen. The moments of his past life, the moments he had with his butler, Sebastian, all had disappeared. All felt like a dream to Ciel. A really long and miserable one. Ciel yanked the double-doors open, and walked forward. He was out on the balcony. Fresh air tapped his face.

Ciel looked up at the sky. The sun was shining bright, as if mocking him. He couldn't help but let out a smile.

"Since when did I feel so peaceful?" He tried to push all the memories out of his mind. And for the first time in ages, he really laughed happily. His dead parents, his beloved who died…all was gone for a moment.

"How long can I feel like this again, huh, GOD?" He opened his arms widely, and shouted out loud. Then he switched to giggling. His stomach hurt, but he didn't care. Ciel wanted to cry, for the sake of Sebastian, but he would just feel worse, so then he chose laughing instead. The laughing ceased, and Ciel found rows of tears streaming down his face.

"Sebastian…you promised me…you wretched demon…" He laid onto the concrete floor under the sunshine. He raised his hand, blocking the bright light. He clenched his teeth and sobbed. And he stayed there for a while.

Hours pass, or even, centuries, to him. He laid there thinking about his life. What have I really done? What have I achieved? Nothing. This life is hopeless. Maybe…if I died and be born again, I would be better somehow…Ciel had this crazy thought. He stepped onto the handrail and spread his arms. The wind was blowing, one wrong move, and he would fall five floors right down onto the ground. He laughed for one last time, and…leaned backwards. His back hit the floor again with a thump. It hurt, but he didn't mind. That was crazy.

Ciel opened his eyes widely, and looked upon the clouds. His eyes were determined.

"Sebastian…just wait for me…I will come after you. But, I promise, that I have to make everyone remember about you." He grinned.

And for forever, the Sebastian in his heart, never dies.

"Ringg…ringgggg…!" The school bell rang. Students were emerging from classrooms, filling the hallway with chatter and voices. Summer time.

"Woooo-hoooooooooo!" A student called Aleister said jumping up and down with joy. Next to him stood a blonde little guy who was paying his full attention to the book he was reading, despite the fact that classes were over, and now it was time to celebrate the summer holidays.

"Oi, you bookworm Finley! Classes are over! Get off that book!" Then Aleister snatched the book out of Finley's hands.

"Hey! I was reading! It's an interesting stuff! Really!" He reached for the book, was Aleister was taller, so he raised it higher, and making Finley pout.

"Just kidding." He giggled, and handed the book back. "So…what are you reading then…let's see…The Day I became a Demon…by Ciel Phantomhive…isn't that like a fiction?" Aleister asked. Finley nodded.

"It's a classic, and it was written in the early 1900s…we've just learnt about it in Language Arts, but it's a real hit. I heard it was the best-selling title at that time period." Finley explained.

"Yeah…I've heard about it a coupla times. Meh…but really I never read it, isn't it like about a demon or something…?" Aleister put his hands behind his head, walking with his friend Finley.

"Well, not really." He said. "It's more like about a little boy, who had a contract with a demon, and he fell in love with that demon at the end. But eventually the demon died, and the boy lived his days in despair and regrets, and hoping that one day they would be united together."

"WHOA…! A demon who fell in love with a human? That's rare. Anyway it's kinda interesting! What makes it so popular?" Aleister asked.

"Well, I guess because the author describes the details of the story really well, and if you read it yourself, I bet you'll have this feeling that it was you who was the little boy." Finley nodded. "Really, it is that good 'cuz this author invents all sorts of things that people at that time never thought of, like Grim Reapers, and Bizarre Dolls…yeah, kinda like zombies I think. And what people liked more about it was that what was written at the beginning of the book makes a real mystery. Here, look." Then Finley turned his book and showed it to Aleister.

"To you, my beloved, that I may never forget you, Sebastian Michaelis…Hm…who's that?" Aleister raised his eyebrow.

"Well, that's the point: no one really knows who that was, and people said the author was not an open person. He literally didn't have any friends at all, and when it was too late, the author died in his house due to a heart attack, and this was the only masterpiece that people recall him." Finley explained.

"Well… that makes sense. Interesting. Guess I'll read it some time this summer. Then…see ya! Have a nice summer!" Aleister smiled, and he ran off, waving his hand.

"Sure. You too, bye!" He smiled back.

Ciel Phantomhive was right. For centuries, and the people still tell the story of how a demon, who fell in love with a human, made a miracle. Their journey just keeps on going.

At least Ciel could sleep well now.

_The End__

A/N: Thank you for the people who followed me through this story. To be honest, I felt like I didn't really do a good job, but thank you once more for keeping reviewing and reminding me of my mistakes. I hope that I could improve my writing in the future, and here it is, the first completed story.
