TRIS POV

His arms cross his chest, he looks hurt and … absolutely furious. "Why didn't you trust me? We have nothing if we don't have trust!" He turns and walks away from me. My worst fear is happening, it's over between us.

I bolt upright, rattled from my dream. I don't want to lose Tobias but I can't blindly hand the Factionless what they want. I glance at the clock, only a few more hours to make up my mind. I get out of bed, careful not to wake Tobias. I make myself some hot chocolate to help calm me, grab the throw blanket from the back of the chair, and curl up on the couch to sort through my thoughts. I doubt I could go back to sleep. And as if the situation wasn't bad enough the realization hits me that there is a chance that I might run into my father or mother in the Abnegation headquarters.

"What are you doing out here?" Startled, I drop my mug on the floor. The remaining contents spill out as the mug shatters into tiny pieces. Without another word, he leaves to grab a towel to clean the mess while I pick up the broken ceramic pieces.

I throw the broken mug in the trash. On my way back to the couch Tobias stops me. "Tris, what is going on with you? Don't tell me it is nothing because I know better than that. Something has been on your mind for a while now."

I could lie. I've been doing it for a while, but the concerned tone of his voice and the look in his eyes stop me. "I don't know. I guess it's just…something doesn't feel right about the situation." It's not a lie but it isn't the whole truth.

"I've been feeling a little uneasy about it myself." He stares at me, studying my reaction. I try to keep the relief that this bothers him from my face, instead I try to look curious. "I've been thinking. Evelyn, my mother, went to drastic and dramatic measures to get our attention when she could have been more subtle. But when she told us what the information was it was like she was a different person."

"It couldn't hurt to review whatever is on the flash drive before we give it to her." I let the words flow carefully from my mouth.

He mulls it over. "Maybe. The problem is that we didn't plan time to look at the information before we hand it over."

He may not have planned it, but I have. "What if…we used one of the computers…at the Abnegation headquarters to look at it? I mean it would be risky but I think we can manage. Will was already going to give us those ear bud things so he could talk us through it and he can probably hack into the security feed and make it look like nobody is in the room." I take a deep breath. "If it all pans out we can make the drop like we planned."

"I can't believe you just came up with that. It's a great idea." He pulls me close.

The guilt is gnawing at me. "It's nothing," I mumble. "I'll go over to Will and Christina's in a couple of hours to let them know."

I let Tobias lead me back to the bedroom. I lay there, pretending to be asleep until the alarm goes off.

PAGE BREAK PAGE BREAK

"I'll be back in a few," Will calls to Christina and I as he rushes off to remove the virus from the Dauntless control room so that Tobias will be able to go with me to Abnegation.

"At least now you won't be going alone and he is finally on board."

"Not totally. He still doesn't know that we've been planning any of this. But at least I won't be going behind his back."

"It's all going to work out. Soon we can get back to our normal lives."

I laugh. "A normal life? Have you forgotten where we live? This is Dauntless. Nothing is ever normal here." We laugh together.

TOBIAS POV

I knew something was bothering Tris. She was talking in her sleep last night. I didn't hear everything but from what I did, it sounded like she had done something to upset me. She woke up and tried to slip quietly out of the room but I was awake, listening to her.

When I told her that I had my doubts about my mother I expected her to be surprised and wonder why. She seemed curious but only after a flicker of relief flooded her face. Then she made a plan, only it sounded like one that had been thought on for several days.

I followed her silently, hiding in the shadows as she went to Christina and Will's apartment. They were talking as if no one could hear them. I did. I listened through the door as Tris told them that I finally thought my mother was up to something and that they had to rearrange some of their plans a bit so that it would look like the plan was made on the fly. Will mentioned needing to remove the virus he had planted on the computer system that would guarantee that I would have to stay here.

I moved away from the door and down the hall a ways to make it look like I was just walking up as Will goes to leave for the control room. "Where are you headed?"

He looks startled to see me. "I am going to go get the ear buds and do some computer stuff in the control room."

"Great I have some things to do there. I'll go with you." He looks nervous but nods his head in assent. I follow him to the control room and take a computer on the opposite side of the room so he can remove the virus. I will not stay here. "You think you can pull this off?"

"Yeah, sure. Abnegation doesn't get monitored closely here, it is too boring. But I ha-…" He clears his throat. "I just have to find a video of the room with no one on it and loop it to make it look empty while you guys are in there." I'm sure he just about revealed that he already has the video but caught himself before he did. I suspected he had been in on this plan for a while.

"Grab the ear buds and let's get a move on." I tell him.

PAGE BREAK PAGE BREAK

Tris and I are finishing getting ready for the day. I haven't said much to her. Instead I brew on everything. She didn't trust me to listen to her concerns and instead was plotting for me to get stuck behind and leave her without any protection.

"Ready to get some breakfast?" She moves to give me a kiss but I hold her back at her shoulders. "What's wrong?"

"Why didn't you tell me?" I whisper.

For a brief moment she looks like a deer caught in headlights but it changes quickly. "What do you mean?"

"Tris, I know. Don't play games with me." I give her a hard stare. "You and Christina and Will made up this plan a while ago. It wasn't something that you concocted on the spot." My anger starts boil. I fold my arms across my chest. "Do you think that I don't care about your opinion? Do you not trust me?"

"I do trust you!" She pleads. "I just didn't want to be the one to come between your mother and you. I'm sorry. I wanted to make sure that my suspicions were correct before making any accusations."

"You should have told me! Whether your accusations are right or wrong, you should have said something from the beginning. What if someone had caught you? You would have been by yourself. Did you have a plan in the event that it happened?" She stares at the ground in shame and shakes her head. "No. You didn't. It was stupidity on your part. Together we could come up with some excuse."

"It wasn't stupid!" Shame face gone, an angry one in its place. "I care about you. I love you. I didn't want you to doubt your mother without proof!"

My anger starts to subside. She makes a good argument. If our roles were reversed I would probably have done the same thing. I wouldn't want to be the cause of her doubting her family. I sigh. "I love you too. We need to be honest with each other no matter what feelings it may cause the other person. Do you have any idea how much it hurt for you to distance yourself from me? More than being physically harmed, more than knowing that I may never have anything to do with my mother." I pull her tight to me. "I love you. I don't want to be without you."
