When the Last Leaf Fell

It was a late evening of a stormy All Hallows Eve, the first anniversary of the death of You-know-who. Wind was blowing fiercely, rattling the fallen leaves against the boarded windows. A whip like branch was hitting the house repeatedly, lashing and crunching against the wooden wall.

"…and now we will hear a new single from the ever so lovely and talented Celestina Warbecks called-"

The radio went dead all the sudden and the wind ceased. The candles flickered and burned out like all the oxygen was suddenly gone. But it was suppose to be over! They held their wands in a firm grip and waited.

Everything was silent. Their eyes were wide on the darkness, trying to see but failing.

Thud.

She turned her fearful honey eyes towards her husband. Neither was breathing.

Thud. Thud.

There!

Thud. Thud. Thud.

No!

They were here, on their backyard. Their heavy steps cutting through the silence, dry leaves grumbling under their expensive boots, dragging their feet's across the peddled path.

Thud. Thud. Thud. Thud.

They were coming!

"Take him and run! Don't look back!"

She was already on her feet, look of pure determination on her pale face.

"I love you"

"I love you"

Neither looked at each other, he was facing the back door and she was holding their baby by her chest. Both had their wand's drawn, ready to fight.

"I'll be waiting for you, my love." She heard him whisper.

There was a murmur of a spell but the thick wooden door dulled the words. She heard the door handle turning.

She ran. Don't look back!

She reached the front hall just as the door was blown of its hinge's.

She turned and ran up the stairs, burning the stairs behind her with an Incendio.

Thud. Thud.

They were coming!

No! The library fireplace was a pile of grumbled stone and dust. The windows were too high from the ground to jump from.

Thud. Thud. Thud. Thud.

She heard her husband scream.

We can't get out!

She ran.

There was a dark, tall figure standing by their bedroom door, wearing a dark cloak and a hood drawn to cover their face.

We can't get out!

She climbed the attic stairs stumbling in her panic, smoke burning her throat with every breath.

Thud. Thud.

They were coming! We can't get out!

She ran all the way to the other side of the attic where the house elves use to sleep. Where is it?! Where is it?! Dear Merlin, where is it!

Thud. Thud.

There, under the cot!

She quickly crabbed a handful of the floo powder and threw it in the small fireplace. Large enough for a House-elf, large enough for her baby. Too small for her.

"Goodbye my beautiful son. Mommy and daddy will always love you, remember that. Grow strong my love, my Neville." she murmured kissing his soft cheek and placing him in the tiny fireplace.

"Emmeline Vance residence!" she shouted.

Thud. Thud.

Stay strong my son.

She would soon join her husband.

Thud. Thud. Thud. Thud.

But their son, their brave little Neville, would live.

Soft footsteps halted behind her and she heard a cruel, cold laughter. Alice turned to face her murderer with an accomplished smile on her face.
