Summary: And so, he decided his plan: bug Nikki until she fessed up. A little cliché, but it'd do.

...

Some people said they never knew when they first fell in love. He knew exactly when it happened.

He was fourteen, just hitting puberty. The girls had (for the most part) already taken that first step towards adulthood. But he and the other guys had just started. He's awkward and his voice squeaks and he's really starting to notice girls, even more than before.

So he sits in the corner during the schools latest dance. They all do. None of them had wanted to go in the first place, yet here they were. In monkey suits. You couldn't say they weren't good friends.

He remembered seeing Nikki irritably pick at her dress, venting to Jen about how she'd been unwillingly dragged along by the brunette and thinking she looked really pretty in said dress.

He did a double-take, almost spitting out his punch. Pretty!? When did Nikki suddenly become pretty!? Nikki was a sarcastic pain in the butt, not one of those girls who wore the makeup and clothes that made themselves look good. But the thought stayed, no matter how much he tried to get rid of it.

And then on, he finds himself noticing things. Little, unimportant things. How she looked when she was stuck on a hard problem on a test, the way her hair fanned out when she was sleeping, the smile she wore whenever she put a jerk in there place. He'd known her for years, but now he was noticing things he never had before.

You know the rest. Dating Nikki is actually a lot more fun than one would expect. It's like hanging out, only better. He doesn't have to dress up or take her someplace super fancy that doesn't even have good food. He doesn't have to worry about buying her a gift she doesn't like- not that he ever has to buy gifts- and he doesn't have to worry about her using him to get back at some ex. This was Nikki, the person he'd been with since he was four. They'd seen each other through there worst times and celebrated there best. What did they have to worry about? It's fun even if they don't agree on much because the arguments are fun and (usually) friendly and he doesn't have to worry about her trash talking him to the others or complain on some website. It's all fun, what was there to complain about?

And then... she dumped him. Took one look at the idea of being in a real relationship and ran for the hills. And, for the first time ever, a girl had dumped him, and he hadn't been the real problem.

The look on her face, regretful but determined, sealed the deal. He wasn't gonna be hung up. He was gonna move on, date lots of girls, find one who wouldn't drop him like a dime. But, he was, however, going to find out why she dumped him.

Because it wasn't alright that she didn't explain. Nikki always had a reason, always. She wouldn't dump someone because of one bad anniversary neither of them were prepared for. No, something wasn't right.

And so, he decided his plan: bug Nikki until she fessed up. A little cliché, but it'd do.
