Author's Note: The 365 Project is an experimental project to write and post at least one short every day for the next year, not including my semi-regular bi-weekly updates. Whether or not that goal can be reached, we'll see... This is The 365 Project, 12 March.

Kakashi goes hunting Naruto when he doesn't come back after storming out of Tazuna's, Zabuza goes hunting Haku when she doesn't return from gathering plants, the two find each other instead and prepare to fight... Inspired by Sheltie's great collection of "One Shocking Surprise" one-shots and posted with their permission.

"A Shocking Surprise For Two"

Naruto hadn't returned to Tazuna's house after storming out the night before. Normally, that wouldn't be a problem since Kakashi knew his student could take care of himself, but they were in hostile territory with an unknown number of mercenaries and Missing Nin, so the 'Copy Nin' had decided - for safety's sake - that he should probably find his wayward student and bring him back now that Naruto had had time to calm down.

Zabuza knew he should be resting and healing for his re-match with the 'Copy Nin', but Haku had not returned from hunting plants to make his medicine. While he knew she could handle herself - he had trained her, after all - she lacked a killer's instinct and could be overwhelmed by sheer numbers if she was caught by all three of the Konoha Genin and without her, there was no way he'd be ready in time to face Kakashi. Deciding to err on the side of caution for once, Zabuza made up his mind to go hunting his tool.

As though Fate were having a laugh, no longer interested by the slavish devotion to it of Hyuga Neji, the seperate trails of Naruto and Haku led each older ninja to the same clearing in the woods where they now faced off. Zabuza lifted his massive cleaver-like sword, preparing for his trademark decapitating throw while the air filled with the screeching sound of Kakashi's 'One Thousand Birds' attack. Before the would-be combatants could make their opening moves, however, they were stopped by the feeling of two foreign chakras flooding the clearing. Kakashi had been there when Kyuubi had attacked Konoha, he remembered how its chakra felt; hot and evil, like the fires of hell coming to devour his soul; just like it felt now... but that was nothing compared to the second chakra he was feeling, cold and harsh, like the black void of death itself, worse than the torture of hell, the nothingness of oblivious.

"Do you two mind?" Naruto snarled, looking at them with his head sticking out from behind a nearby tree, "We were asleep here."

"And if you don't have a good reason for waking us up," Haku added, as her head appeared from the other side of the same tree, "I'm going to freeze off the reason you read those stupid orange books."

Naruto whimpered, "Hey, I like orange, Haku-chan."

"You know I meant the books were stupid and not the color, Naruto-kun."

"You hurt the orange's feelings, though, I think I should take my jacket back."

"Go right ahead," Haku teased before her voice went so soft and low that the two older ninja couldn't hear what she said next, though the sounds that started echoing off the trees gave them a good idea what was happening out of their sight.

"Okay, kill me now," Zabuza lowered his sword and ordered Kakashi, "I'd rather die than think about the fact that my adopted daughter is sleeping with your student."
