Chief Aaron burst into his quarters, tossing the device on his desk. He paced around the room, mind swirling, trying to figure out what to do.

"Chief?" a voice— Council Member Todd came from behind the cloth that acted as his door.

"Not now!" he snapped, "I need a minute!"

"B-but Chief," Todd stammered, "we need to assess Gem's score!"

"I said I need a minute!" Aaron shouted. He heard the council member scurry off, not asking any further questions— just how he wanted it to be.

Taking a shaky breath, he looked down at the rectangular device once more. The girl's high score was still on the annoyingly bright screen, mocking him.

Best: 100

It completely blew his own score of 50 out of the water. He would have to give up everything— his position as Chief, his nice dwelling, his clothes. He would have to live in those small, disgusting tents that did nothing to keep out the cold in the winter. He would have to give up all the luxury that the gods— nay, his raw talent— had blessed him with.

"No." he said to himself, teeth gritting in anger.

He walked back over to the curtain, glancing out of it to see if there was anyone nearby. There wasn't.

Rushing back over to his desk, Chief Aaron picked the testing device back up. He knew little about the device, but he did know the basics of how to run the test— including resetting the scores for the next assessment.

"Sorry, Gem," he muttered to himself, "but this is how it has to be."

He closed the test. Reopened it. The high score was gone.

Knowing that his council members would be back to check on him soon, he quickly began to take the test to give her another score, any other score than what she had. Though not one too similar to his, of course— he'd heard her whine about the uselessness of the test before, he knew that she would be a danger to his position if she was close in rank to him. No, giving her a low score would keep her in her place. Putting her to work in the fields would be the best way to keep her quiet.

"Chief!" Council Member Jacob entered the dwelling suddenly, causing Chief Arron to startle and lose the test. "What's going on? We need to give Gem her test results."

Chief Aaron looked at the screen, the bright lights shining the new score. Taking a deep breath, he turned to face his colleague.

"I'm sorry for the delay," he said, trying to make his voice sound sorrowful, "I just needed a moment to… Well, to process what happened."

He held the device out towards Council Member Jacob so that he could see the test results. Jacob let out a small gasp.

The other council members began to crowd around the entrance of the dwelling.

"What's taking so long?" one asked, "What's the girl's score?"

Jacob looked at Chief Aaron with a pained expression, then at the other Council Members.

"Gentlemen," Chief Aaron said gently, "I'm afraid our little Gem didn't receive any points."
