Chapter 40

I wake up back in bed wearing one of Tobias's T-shirts. I have no idea how I got here, I know I wasn't dreaming because I'm sore and my hair is damp. Tobias is tangled around me like a vine with his face in the crook of my neck. I close my eyes and try to remember exactly what happened last night, we didn't fight or anything. Usually when we fight I wake up and he's curled around me like he is now. I feel him raise up so I open my eyes to look at him.

"Hey." He gives me a wary look, "How are you feeling?" I pull myself up and throw the covers off of us.

"I'm good."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes Tobias, there isn't a scratch on me."

"Don't be so sure about that," he holds my hands up in front of my face and both of my wrists have deep purple bruises.

"You have them on your ankle too."

"Tobias, that isn't your fault."

"Yes, it is. I'm the one who tied you up."

"I liked it."

"You were bleeding after…" He looks down at the sheet underneath me and there is a bloodstain about the size of his palm.

"I. Am. Fine." I try to sit in his lap but I wince in the process. He puts his hand behind my back trying to steady me. "Tobias, I'm fine, you didn't hurt me, I'm just a little sore but last night was so…worth it. I'd love to do that again." He inhales sharply and his eyes get wide.

"Really?"

"Yeah, I mean I don't think I would want to do it every night because honestly my whole body feels like jello, but it was so worth this." I raise my arms up in front of me, showing him my wrists. "But I have one question, what brought that on?"

"Honestly, I'm not sure, I just woke up in the middle of the night and I was thinking about how…physically frustrated you've been lately and I figured it'd be a nice surprise."

"Well I'm glad," I lean down and kiss him slowly.

"We have to get to work." Tobias groans and gently sets me back on the bed, going to get dressed.

Tobias leads me down to lockup to get Eric and Bryce. I purposefully trail behind Tobias and Eric so I can talk to Bryce.

"Four told me about the pregnancy, and we got Max to agree to let you stay with us for the time being, if you want."

"Can Eric come too?"

"That's the catch, he has to remain in lockup until initiation is over, then he has to go on trial. So no, he can't come with you because he is a criminal in the leaders' eyes until he is proven not to be."

"Can I talk it over with Eric first? I really don't want to leave him to sleep alone all the way down here."

"Yeah, you can talk to him about it if you want."

Eric and Bryce mumble to each other throughout breakfast and when we get to the fear landscape room Bryce stays outside with me and the other initiates and Eric goes into the testing room with Tobias. The day is pretty uneventful until after Liam's fear landscape when Tobias calls me into the room with him. We were saving Liam for last because we really didn't want to put up with him. Eric is leaning up against the wall laughing, which is completely out of character for him, so something must have happened. I warch Liams landscape intently until it gets to the end. Tobias is his greatest fear.

"What did you say to him?"

"I just told him that if he doesn't stay far away from Imara that I will turn his worst fears into reality."

"Tobias, you can't threaten him."

"I know, so from now on we need to get someone else to do his and Imara's tests."

"Why Imara?"

"She won't finish her landscape if I'm watching her."

"What do you mean she won't finish it?"

"I mean she won't even go into it unless I set the program to only go through her first four fears."

"I wonder why she doesn't want you to watch…"

"She hasn't said, she made me promise to leave the room when she has her final test."

"I think I know what it is." Eric gives us a strange look. "Liam is her greatest fear."

"What did I tell you about leaving my daughter alone?"

"I know what you told me, but I'm almost positive that Liam is her greatest fear. She told Bryce and I everything." Tobias takes his gun out and sticks it against Eric's back.

"Tris, I need you to take Bryce back to the apartment, I'm taking this piece of shit back to lock up."

I lead Bryce back to the apartment in silence.

"You hungry?"

"Kinda."

"What do you like? We don't have much but I can throw something together, we eat in the cafeteria most of the time."

"I actually don't eat meat…"

"Do you eat fish?"

"Yeah…"

"Well, I have some salmon burgers. Want one?"

"Yeah."

"So, how far along are you?"

"About a month I guess"

"You guess?"

"Yeah, we don't really have doctors where I come from."

"So do you need me to take you to a doctor?"

"I'd have to talk to Eric first." She looks away from me and nervously traces one of her tattoos.

"How come? Look, it's just an appointment. I'll take you first thing in the morning down to the infirmary and we can have them check on your health and the babes health, find out how far along you are, and then you can talk to Eric. I know you don't want to feel like you're keeping a secret but it's what's best for the baby right? Not to mention I know that it's better to check on the baby sooner rather than later."

"Okay," she concedes and then motions at the small electric grill, "I think my salmon burger is done."

Nadia suddenly comes running through the door followed by a fuming Aiden. Nadia runs straight past me to her room but I manage to catch Aiden by the arm.

"What happened?"

I followed Nadia after school, I don't want to talk about it until Dad is home." He storms off and Bryce is just sitting there wide eyed and staring at me.

"So…those are your children too? I thought you only had the one."

"Yeah, I have three, and trying for another. So tell me, how come you and Eric came here?"

"He thought it would be safer than staying with the faction less, a better place to raise the baby."

"Makes sense."

I'm sitting at the kitchen table and Bryce is taking a nap when Tobias walks in the door looking exhausted.

"Hey, you get everything worked out?"

"Sorta…but there's just one thing."

"Which is?"

"Eric and Bryce have to fight with the initiates and go under a fear simulation when we do final testing. Max wants Bryce to start practicing tomorrow."

"She can't fight while she's pregnant and you know it. The most she can possibly do is throw knives and learn to shoot."

"I know I know."

"What about the fear simulation?"

"I think it's a very bad idea, the ingredients of the serum itself aren't the problem, it's what the serum does. We hook wires up to people for a reason when they go through that. It's a lot of stress to put on her system."

"Well, how can we get her out of this stuff?"

"Talk her into going to the infirmary and make sure she gets proof of pregnancy."

"Proof of pregnancy? I've never heard of that. I didn't have to have it."

"No, you didn't, and a lot of people don't have to have it, but for now they can't be fully trusted and Max will have to have proof before he changes his mind."

"Good point, I'm taking her tomorrow by the way to see how far along she is and if the baby is healthy."

"Good, does she want Eric to go with her? I don't want to get her hopes up but I could probably sneak away or have Zeke bring him down."

"No, she talks like he doesn't even want her to go to the doctor at all."

"Lets change the subject, ok? We have problems too." He laces his fingers through mine and searches my eyes for a moment.

"Well, first you should talk to our son, he won't talk to anyone but you…good luck."

"Okay." He turns and walks out and I'm just finishing up the laundry when he comes back, I lay some comfortable clothes out for Bryce and decide I should probably wake her up pretty soon since she wanted to take a shower before we went to supper.

"So what's going on with Aiden?"

"Well, for one, he caught Nadia screwing around with that Amity kid again. This time they were on the train! They were screwing around on the train in the last car and Aiden somehow didn't get a good running start, ended up in the same car, and caught them red handed."

"So what are we going to do?"

"Absolutely nothing, yet. I plan on just letting them go and hopefully it will flame out just as quick as it started."

"Sounds like a plan I guess. I really should wake Bryce up so she can take her shower before we go down to eat."

"How about we just have pizza? I don't really feel like…socializing…tonight." He takes my hand again and gives me a smoldering look. "Maybe after we eat and Bryce is settled in we can…"

"If we aren't too worn out by that point I'd love to."

Again, sorry it wasn't very long. I'll update sometime in the next week. Until then, PLEASE REVIEW!
