Epilogue: The Doctor and his Patient

Three Months Later. . .

"Go with him." Caroline insisted as the two girls stood in Katherine's kitchen. "You're obviously miserable without him."

"I am not miserable." Katherine defended herself pathetically. "Besides Elijah and I left in good terms, there were no hard feelings."

"Hard feelings? Katherine you and Elijah weren't coworkers for God's sake and besides you haven't even looked at another guy since he left. Have you two even talked?"

Katherine shrugged. "A few times, though not recently. Care, he's is in a new state with a bunch of sexy doctors why do you think he would miss me?"

Caroline bit on a potato chip. "Because you're kind of irreplaceable, I mean who else would try and cook for him while practically running down her kitchen. No one. And if you're so over him, why do you still have some of his stuff? Some of his shirts, the birthday cat he gave you for your birthday?" Caroline pointed out.

Katherine flushed as she turned around. "It's complicated."

"No, it's not complicated. Both of you are the complications." Caroline huffed. "What you should do is go to Florida and confess your undying love to him."

"Yeah, this isn't the Notebook." She sighed as she scratched behind Marie's ear. "Besides what can I do in Florida all the magazines are here?"

"You have an English major and you could do some freelance writing while you're there or write articles via email." Caroline said in her bossy voice.

"But you live here, and Eloise, and Emma-"

"Katherine," Caroline said gently. "Elena and Emma have passed away, you can't spent your whole life feeling sad and I'm a tough girl I can handle myself." She smiled. "And Eloise can handle herself as well. What I'm trying to say is that stop looking for excuses and just take the leap. Don't do something you're going to regret."

Katherine didn't speak for a moment, she reached forward and squeezed her hand. "You're a good friend, Caroline."

Caroline smiled at her. "Well, you're not so bad yourself."

"You're leaving? It was about time."

"That wasn't really the answer I was expecting from my grandmother." Katherine rolled her eyes playfully as she sat in Eloise's living room while Eloise flipped through a catalogue.

"Oh, you know what I mean." She said as she put her magazine down. "It takes a lot of energy to convince you, this poor old lady's heart can take it."

"You just drowned two martinis I'm sure your heart is doing pretty well." Katherine faced her grandmother. "Are you sure you will be all right by yourself?"

"Katherine, I have been taking care of myself for the past fifty years."

"Well, if you ever need anything-"

"Katherine." Eloise interrupted. "Just go and think about yourself for once."

Elijah was just exiting the hospital after another grueling shift, it had been three month since he had left New York and he still couldn't get used to the climate changes or the time change. He liked Florida, but he missed New York. He missed Katherine.

They had talked a couple of times, but they had not really said anything.

He stepped on something.

Elijah looked down, it was a stuffed, white cat. The same kind that he had given Katherine for her birthday. He picked it up and then looked straight ahead, not wanting to believe the sight. "Katherine?"

Katherine was perched against his car, dressed in a skirt and a pretty blue blouse, her hair was even curlier than the last time he had seen her. There were half of dozen suitcases at her feet along with a white cat. He was definitely hallucinating.

He approached her. Definitely not a dream. "What are you doing here?"

Katherine gave him a cocky smile. "I wanted to see the doctor in charge." She picked up the stuffed cat. "I assume you miss this?"

"Not as much as I miss the owner." He petted her cheek. "What are you doing here? Why-"

Katherine interrupted as she kissed him. "I think that answers all of your questions."

"It definitely did." He murmured. "So New York . . .?"

"New York and I are in a bit of a break." She raised an eyebrow. "I heard that the weather is better in Florida."

"It is." Elijah continued the teasing. "I can definitely show you a few things. Are you staying long?"

Katherine gave him a familiar saucy smirk. "Oh, definitely, Dr. Mikaelson. I think I'm going to be staying here for a long time."
