Disclaimer: You know; I don't own the characters, setting, I bow to Tolkien's greatness, etc. The usual.
Author's Note: I got this idea when I was flipping through The Silmarillion one day (because I randomly flip through The Silmarillion….doesn't everyone?) and I realized that Nienna and Ulmo were the only two of the Valar who weren't married (not counting Melkor….). And I thought, what a great 'ship'! So I wrote this little thing.
Nienna walked along the seashore, her feet making gentle imprints in the sand. Her silver hair blew out behind her, and she pulled her grey cloak tighter about her against the cold sea-spray. She looked out over the waves, watching the gentle lap, lap, lap on the shore line.
Suddenly the wind quickened a little. Nienna's grey eyes sharpened slightly as she looked out to sea. For she sensed another's presence, another of her own, another Vala.
The waves grew slowly higher and the wind heightened. Then, out of the now nearly crashing waves, a man's figure appeared. His grey-brown hair and beard whipped about in the wind, giving him a slightly frightening appearance.
The waves receded as he stepped out onto the shore. Nienna stepped forward in greeting. "My Lord Ulmo."
For a moment, his green eyes met her grey ones. Then he stepped forward in greeting. "My Lady Nienna." He bowed and kissed her hand. "I have not seen you in this form before." It seemed his voice held a bit of admiration.
"Nor I, you," she said, equally admiring. She reached out her hand to take his.
Their eyes and hands met. They stood there for a moment, the sea breeze rustling their hair, the gentle voice of the sea in the background.
"It would be a pleasure to look more upon this new form of yours, my lady," said Ulmo.
"As it would be for me, too, my lord." Her grey eyes held a rare light, and her lips smiled slightly.
After another moment of calm silence, Ulmo looked out again towards the sea, his real first love.
"Farewell, my lady. I am afraid I must return to the waters."
"Farewell, my lord." The brief light in her eyes quenched, she raised a hand in farewell, and then added, softly, "I hope you will come again."
It was only a little whisper, but Ulmo heard. "Do not fear, my lady. I shall."
Nienna watched as he disappeared into the waves. A tear ran down her cheek.
Alright, hope you all liked it! I know it was kind of short. I have the hardest time writing long stuff. I'll write for a half hour, then look back at what I wrote, and think, 'oh, that's all?' It's the same with chapter stories. I end up writing painfully short chapters.
Anyway, review?
