Chapter 6

The sun was setting along the horizon, engulfed by the thicket trees that seemed to devour the daylight. It was spreading like wildfire, the hues of burnt violet scattered across the sky, burning the traces of blue with its heat.

Elyse was standing at the edge of the wall, feet barely planted against the hard stone. She could see the world behind the wall, the mysterious world that seemed to call out to her. Out there, there were no people, no cities, no limitations…it was sight of freedom. If only the Titans didn't exist. If the sky was the limit, sure enough their jaws would trap them down here forever. However, there wasn't any of the merciless giants as she expected there would be, crawling and fumbling about, waiting for their next meal. The land beyond was void of them, just the trees lingering out now. It was almost so inviting and peaceful.

The wind brushed against her green cape, fluttering in the breeze as she stared off into the distance. She glanced down at her hands, feeling the grip of swords pressing firmly into her palms. She noticed how tightly she was clutching the metal holster, knuckles white and stressed. Elyse didn't know what she was doing, nor why she was standing so close to the edge. One slip and she could fall. It was dangerous to be this high, especially if the wind decided to pick up. She wasn't safe up here. She felt the urge to back away when she felt a hand press firmly against her back.

Elyse trembled at the touch, the feeling of uncertainty plagued her mind, terrified of her fate. One shove and she'd be down. She didn't have her gear on, so she couldn't swing back up if she wanted. She would fall all the way down and that would be the end of her. Her body broken and battered; her knees shook at the sudden feeling. The anticipation of the end terrified her. It would be painful to die, to endure such trauma that the body eases to function. It was horrifying to believe, that she could be this close to death.

"No, don't." She pleaded only to feel the hand push even more firmly against her, shoving her closer to the edge. She could've turned around to face the stranger, slice them away if they meant to be a threat, but something kept her still. The stranger's hand paralyzed her, causing her to quiver and eyes wide with fear of anticipation.

There were moments she didn't need a person holding her like this to recognize that she always felt this way. She wondered why did always let things get this far, until nothing was left to do but plummet into the world below. It was continuously like this, feeling so out of control, and so feeble about everything. She never could find her voice when she needed to. It was always lost, always hidden deep within until it was too late.

"Stop running." Said the voice, sounding so familiar. "It's time."

"Time for what?" Elyse replied, desperately clinging to the words.

"It's time to awake up."

With a sudden jerk, Elyse's body sprang forward, falling fast from the thrust. Her body twisted as it fell, allowing Elyse to see the face of her killer. Her eyes widened at the sight, seeing familiar cerulean blues and blonde hair that flung around with the wind. It was free of the braid, blonde locks floating around freely. She was wearing the familiar pink blouse and jeans. It was as if she looked at her own reflection, everything a copy, but not quite when she saw her somber expression. It was a face that had enough. It was the face she wore everyday behind closed doors, the day with the police, and the day she fought with Petra and Levi…it was the face that she hid, a face of a warrior. But she didn't recognize it, hidden among the many faces she wore.

Who was she really? Rich girl, criminal, friendly face, pretty girl, somebody, nobody? Too many roles, too many faces…

As Elyse descended to the world outside the walls as giant hands reach out for her, crowding her vision of the world around her. Darkness shrouded; Elyse could still feel her tight grip on the blades within her hands. She could still the glowing sunset and how it burned. The fading sun resonated something within her, feeling the darkness within push to swallow the burning star. Darkness would always win, it was good at stomping out the light, crumbling hope where it was needed the most. Elyse was crumbling, breaking a part like the orange hues in the sky.

As much as the darkness shrouded over, Elyse couldn't let go. The sun always would return, restarting anew, light returning to the world. She didn't have to close her eyes to feel the fire was there, igniting inside of her. She wouldn't die, not if she could help it. Elyse desperately wanted to be strong enough to survive in this cruel world and the only way she felt the power is when she moved forward. When she fought, that's when she truly felt alive. It was acceleration, rush that made her warm, the power of her muscles expanding and contracting. Only when she moved did everything seem to make sense.

With a flicker of hope and blades in hand, she slashed at the titan hands. Blood dripping from the flesh, splattering everywhere, sticking to her hair and face, hot and caked on her body. The hands dissipated, only to reveal that the outside had disappeared and was replaced by a single mirror in a voided room.

Elyse approached it, seeing her face covered in blood and carnage. Using her cape, she wiped the fluid away, watching her reflection closely as she did so. As the blood smeared, she recognized that underneath her cloak was the same pink blouse and old jeans. Her hair was wild, and her blue eyes flickered with heat.

Elyse fingered her reflection, wondering where this woman was when she needed her. She felt her fingers twitch instinctively, as to try to tell her something. Her finger tapped on the hard glass, seeing neither the thief or the lady looking back at her, but someone else, someone Elyse had been trying to desperately hide away from the world.

"It's me, isn't it?"

Feeling the steel in her hands grow hot from holding it tightly, Elyse clenched even tighter, and glowered at the mirror. Her somber expression becoming even more apparent at her epiphany.

Elyse readied the blade, bring it up to her face, and stared intently at herself. "Yeah, maybe it's time to wake up." She stated as she quickly sliced away at the mirror, breaking apart her reflection as it shattered all around her.

"No more…" She said to herself lowly, "I know who I am."

"Do you?"

Elyse slowly rose up in her bed, noticing how dark her room was. It was evening and by the aroma that filled the air, it was dinner time. The scent of broth and meat filled her sense, noticing the emptiness lingering in her stomach. Traces of her dream remained, trying to decipher what part of that dream was real. Was she back or was this another mind game? There were some many questions that came with her dreams as of late, causing her to worry that perhaps something deeper was going on within her. There was no real time to debate about delusions and facades now that she was awake.

Elyse lifted herself out of bed, fumbling around to light a candle in her room. She would go down for dinner in a minute, feeling the urge to finally finishing something that should've been completed weeks ago. As with her façade in Sina, Elyse couldn't express herself freely. Her actions were her words, but this wasn't something she could just do. People deserved an explanation, even if it didn't make sense to those reading. It would be her final odes as Elyse Owens as she became Elyse the Survey Corp soldier.

Elyse fingered the unfinished letters gathering dust on her working desk, eager to get the words out. As she wrote, she felt the seams become undone, breaking apart as she told the truth. She started with her mother, explaining her beginnings and her relentless unhappiness in Wall Sina. It was quite liberating to relieve herself of such a burden, but whether her mother would accept her letter or not, was entirely on her. Brian's letter was easier, telling him that she loved him and to keep positive. She didn't want him repeating her steps and hoped that he would be okay without her. Regardless, Brian would have to grow up just as she did. Brian would have to find his fight, that she knew.

Once she finished, she could hear the roar of the dinner hall boom loudly from her room. Setting the ink pen down, she finally decided to join them.

The dinner hall was noisier than ever as the squads of different soldiers joked and chatted among themselves. When Elyse finally arrived at the hall, Petra was the first person to notice her. She waved enduringly at the blonde. "Hey!" Elyse returned the smile and seated herself beside her. The moment she sat down, Petra eyed her carefully, looking intently at her cheekbones were an irritated wound was spreading. It was pulsing lightly, thumping in rhythm with her heartbeat.

"What happened?" Her inquisitive nature made the rest of the group stare at Elyse, eyeing her down as well.

Elyse thoughtfully touched the tender abrasion, "Oh, it's nothing. Just from earlier with Levi." She removed her hand and looked at the group, "It was just training."

Petra and Auruo glanced at each other, realizing that if Elyse fought against Levi, then maybe there was something about her that the others weren't seeing. Sure, her combat skills surprised them, but that was trivial compared to the other things they did here.

Gunther was first one to speak up, "You know…Levi doesn't really fight with the other soldiers here."

"He doesn't?" Elyse asked, finding that surprising. It didn't seem like the type to hold back, let alone be picky about who to spare with. If that was true, Levi had done so much for her that even a little cut from fighting didn't really cause much for alarm. Possibly, he might have been the one who set everything in motion. From the moment they met, their chaotic encounter stirred those fiery emotions within her. In a weird way, fighting with him made her alive, even if he hurt her in the process.

The entire thought of Levi seemed to be strange with her as well. He had caused such a warmth to emerge from within her that it was difficult to deal with. She was just beginning to get to know her true feelings and inviting those warm emotions threw everything off. Plus, she didn't really know if Levi even felt anything. He was hard to read in a friendly manner let alone romantically. That limitation itself made her continue to reject the thought about him, causing her to shove them down again to be analyzed later.

Gunther continued, "Yeah, he mostly trains by himself. Though, few people want to face him. He's too good. He seriously knows how to exploit weaknesses and most get knocked unconscious."

Auruo smirked casually, crossing his arms in the captain's similar fashion, "The captain is the best."

Elyse smiled softly, reflecting on the battle between them. It all happened so fast that even replaying it was difficult to process, even if it was only a few hours ago. He truly was a force to be reckoned with. She could tell why everyone admired him so. "He was insanely fast. I didn't expect to match him, but yes, it was definitely difficult." She gingerly touched the top of her thigh, the remembrance of the pain still stung from their fight. There was something about the way he helped her back to her room, the feeling of his rough grasping along her wrist, guiding her along as his body lightly pressed against her that made her heart start to be fast again.

Stop it, stop it, if she could, she would've hit herself on top of the head. What was it about him that made him plague her thoughts?

"Oh, speaking of which. Where is the captain anyway?" Petra asked, looking among her friends to notice that their short superior wasn't here. He normally joined them, but every now and then he wouldn't show whether it was meetings or late-night training sessions.

Erd shook his head, "I saw him a while ago. He mentioned something about 'that damn paperwork'. He's probably still working on it."

Elyse sighed thoughtfully, "He does get a lot…" If he was working past dinner for work, didn't bode well for her either. More tedious filing, sorting, and organizing. It was all very dull, meticulous work.

"Well, he does work hard." Petra replied, seeming a little sad. That was the issue though, Levi never did stop working. Whether it was training or working, Levi just kept going. Elyse even dared that he doesn't sleep from the deep, dark circles underneath his eyes as well to his grumpy attitude to match.

"Actually, that explains a lot," Elyse laughed lightly, "No wonder he doesn't smile or anything."

Auruo glared, "Now wait just a second, don't diss the cap-!" His booming voice was halted by Petra's elbow, making him end with a squeak, "tain.."

They all laughed lightly with each other. It was nice to laugh among them, to feel a part of their team, and possibly call them friends. When they weren't training, they were bonding. It had been a long time since Elyse had felt this sort of companionship among others. Perhaps leaning on others growing up would've made her childhood better, having others to confide in, and share camaraderie. Instead she isolated herself, only wishing for better and believing that it was impossible to find others to bond with. The Legion continued to prove that was a terrible mindset to have when all they have is each other.

After some time, Elyse said goodbye to everyone, knowing that she had other duties to attend to. Levi never did show up to dinner, which really made her nervous considering that his office work was next on the agenda. She hoped that maybe the paperwork wasn't that bad and maybe Levi would be a good mood. Right as she approached his office door, she paused, wishing she brought him tea or something that might take his edge away. As she knocked, she even wondered if fighting was something that would help. He kicked her ass, but he there was a tranquil air about him afterwards.

Maybe he's some psychopath that gets off from hurting others, she thought as a sinister looking Levi popped into her head. She shook it away with the smug smile, he didn't seem the sinister type, just broodier than others. When she opened the door, she really realized that her first initial thought of him was proven wrong.

Levi was at his desk per usual, paper neatly organized on the wooden table. Instead of narrowing his eyes at her and making some sort of remark, Levi was relaxed against his chair, sleeping peacefully. He breathed softly, his chest rising and falling ever so gracefully that almost didn't look like the same person. It was weird seeing him so vulnerable and soft when he normally was so coarse and sharp.

Elyse wondered if she should just leave him there, not wanting to disturb his rest, though she noticed the large stack of documents neatly placed in her work space. She quietly shut the door behind her and carefully walked over to her section. He didn't stir when she moved passed him, much to her relief. It would've been awkward if he woke to see her invading his space like this. Though, it was her job to help with the work load.

She stole one more glance at the captain, looking at his relaxed state. The abrasive man was handsome as his jet-black hair fell around his eyes, his lips parted slightly. That look was on her face again, staring at him intently before realizing what she was doing. She planted a hand against her forehead when a quiet "shit" escaped her lips.

There was a light click of the door that caused Levi to finally awake. His tired eyes drifted around the room, feeling like someone was there, but strangely it was just him. A deep sigh came from him as he rubbed his face with his hands, waking himself up more. As much as he wanted to sleep, his eyes burned, and his mind wondered feverishly. His insomnia was getting worse as the faces of his fellow comrades floated in his memory, their bloodied and mangled bodies never left him. He could kill the Titans without injury, but the one thing he couldn't do was protect his soldiers or friends from death. He could rely on his own strength, but not the idea that someone would survive the day. It bothered him, causing that dark feeling that loneliness often brought, shrouding him in its gloom.

The candle flickered lazily on his desk, the wick much lower than it was when he lit it. What surprised him was that not only was his desk cleared of all remaining paperwork, but there was hot tea sitting there for him. It didn't take him long to piece it all together. He spun around in his chair, looking over at the corner where he left Elyse those documents to be filed. He didn't even know when he drifted off, he was just taking a quick break when he must have dozed off before she came. Nothing was left besides for the spotless floor; not a trace that she was even there lingered in the room. He ran a hand threw his hair, how did he not know she was here? He was usually very perspective of his surroundings.

"That sneaky little brat…" He said lowly, his fingers wrapping around the top of the teacup. His eyes narrowed lightly, expecting her to mess up his drink again like she did before. It's not that whatever concoction was terrible, but his tea gave him solace in this stupid world. He brought it to his lips, tasting the familiar liquid, which caused him deep relief. Elyse finally made his tea right this time.

The gesture was thoughtful, but he couldn't explain the strange ache he felt in his chest. He needed the rest, but almost regretted feeling the night waste away. His memory of earlier emerged, his hands twitching slightly as replayed their fight in his head. He fought against better than her, she wouldn't even last two seconds against the thugs in the underground, and yet she keenly fixated on him with that fire within her eyes. He would knock her down, but she kept getting back up, ignoring the blood he caused to rip from her.

"I kind of admire you," Her words echoed in his mind, causing him to groan in disapproval.

"Tch, she's such a brat." Levi leaned back into his chair, staring at the ceiling as they continued without much effort.

You're really amazing, Levi."

He remembered that look she gave him with those azure eyes. He had completely beaten her, demolished her even. He was violent and merciless, there was no way she didn't feel pain, and yet to look at him like everything was fine. Her sincerity was unnerving to him. He was even rude to her the moment she came here, but she kept moving forward. Her fighting spirit was seeming to propel forward now, soon she'd be just like the rest of them. He wondered if he continued to treat her with such an attitude if she would continue to make those kinds of statements.

Not that he didn't like them, it was just strange to him to hear. He wasn't good with women; could never understand them while they batted their eyelashes and thrived on witty conversation. He never knew what to say. After a day of unfathomable death and scout failure, word had spread that Levi's talents at killing Titans was godlike and in turn made him very popular with the locals. He would never forget when a few women came up to him, giggling and trying to indulge about his life. He wasn't interested in them for one, but even if he was, his wording with them was awkward to say the lease. He told them the gory details of Titan killing, not intent on trying to make them sick, but the females stayed clear of him the entire night.

But the blondie kept up with him, even if he insulted her and bashed her around, she kept looking his way and smiling. He would almost think that maybe Elyse favored him, but that would make her nuts. There was nothing gentlemanly about him, he was cold and mean, not the type of guy that would someone like Elyse should fancy. Regardless of her extra "hidden" hobbies, Elyse wasn't the type of girl to be into men like him. She was from Sina, pretty much raised by nobles as far as he was considered. She maybe a soldier now, but that doesn't change social status. Once you have connections, they go deep. She has connections with merchants where he has his fair pick of serial killers…they just didn't mesh.

Levi suddenly slammed his tea down sharply, why was he thinking about all of this any way? Why in the world did it matter to him if they meshed well or not? Didn't he have better things to think about or do? He was glowered darkly to himself, quickly changing his thoughts as the night continued around him.

Elyse had woken up extra early that morning, strapping on her gear to get in more practice before the others. The crisp morning air was refreshing, the pure oxygen exciting her eager muscles to prove themselves again today. There was a sense of clarity that filled her when she was active and it would be a good distraction. As she emerged from the building, a familiar voice stopped her.

"Oi." Levi had approached her, locked in his gear already as well. "What are you doing?"

"Going to train." She stated, watching him closely. Levi's sharp eyes only lingered for a moment before he passed her, waving her on to follow him. She obliged, following his steps to the weapon depot where he handed her the Legion's swords. She cusped the grip, eyeing the steel, seeing her reflection within its blades.

Her grip tightened, sliding the blades into their belt. It was good, she was finally molding into what Erwin wanted her to be, but to Levi, she was one more step closer to coming outside with them. The disformed and broken bodies screamed inside his head again, reminding him that though Elyse seemed ready, no one knew what fate would bring.

"Ready?"

Elyse nodded and followed him to the training woods. Her heart was racing the entire time, this was the moment she was looking forward to. Deeper in the woods was cutouts of the different sizes of Titans, each with a rubber neck attachment. Here she would practice for the real thing…though she had found her spirit, the fatality of the Titans was a real thing. No matter how amazing her skills would get, Titans were unpredictable. The Scouts had little success against them, leaving their ranks desolate and wiped after each mission.

Within the woods, Levi had stopped on a higher branch leaving Elyse to claim a lower one, awaiting his direction. She looked around carefully, trying to be mindful of her surroundings and placement, knowing that tricks like this could prove helpful in the real situation. She inhaled deeply, trying to calm herself.

The cutouts of the Titans were made of wood, the stiletto of their body shapes was a bit scary to look at. Whoever designed them, truly embodied the twisted largeness of their gaping mouths and upward sinister smiles.

Do Titans really do smile? That's terrifying, Elyse tightened her sword. She needed to relax and keep her wits about her, even if this was just training.

"These are stupid representations of the Titans. It's good for practicing your strike, but the real battle is to avoid them."

Elyse looked up at him, confused. "We want to avoid them? I thought the goal was to kill them?"

"Tch, don't be stupid. Titans are unpredictable. It's safer to kill only when necessary. Fighting in the woods is the best advantage we have. The true survival issue is when there aren't any places to use your gear."

Elyse nodded slowly in response, she could see his point. The idea was to always come back alive, to be able to fight another day. The woods reminded Elyse of Sina and how the town was covered in different buildings, each having their own personalize style and shape. Being a soldier was more advanced than playing around in the walls though, but the tactic was still the same. She eyed the woods thoughtfully, noticing other shapes of Titan shadows deeper within the foliage. To be aware of everything was key, she had to take notice of the placement of the soldiers, the space in between the trees, the distance between each Titan, and her gas gauge…she would have to be aware of everything, always.

"But this is practice," Levi eyed her from his higher vantage point, noticing how she was calculating her next move. She looked nervous, but everyone was when it came to train like this at first. Everyone imagined themselves for the real thing, how it would feel, trying to predict how it would go, and what it's like to die. He wouldn't ruin it for her and let her concentrate at her own speed, knowing that she would need it. "So practice."

At his words, he heard her zip off to the closest dummy Titan. Elyse was clear for the strike, swinging her blades with fatal intentions as she sped off to the next target. Levi watched her during her training, eyeing her footwork and placement as other soldiers started to come into the training grounds. One soldier had stayed back, watching Elyse closely before realizing who she was.

"Whoa, it's that new chick." He exclaimed, noticing her improvements since she started here. Other soldiers started to take notice too, some unimpressed and others relieved that Elyse was starting to train seriously among them. Levi had to admit that he was relieved too, though he wasn't as excited as the others. It didn't take long before the members of his squad joined the rest of them in the trees, their voices pulling him out of his thoughts.

"Captain!" Petra greeted happily as she joined him on a close branch, followed closely by Erd, Gunther, and Auruo. After a few words, they flew off together, practicing tactics and skills shots within the woods.

As Elyse flew in the air, she couldn't help but to feel the exhilaration of flying, reading herself once more as she locked on a target. She launched her gear on a higher branch, swinging as she graceful flung herself downward. Seeing the orange rubber of the neck, she sliced the blade as hard as she could, immediately feeling the impact and seeing the chopped rubber fling across the woods. She accelerated her gas, flying to a more safer distance to catch her breath. It was harder than it looked, but with practice she knew she'd master it soon.

However, she couldn't help to feel that this wasn't an accurate representation of the expeditions. This was almost too easy. There had to be an element that their training was missing for the Scouts to have such high fatality statistics. During her analysis, she heard the zipping of another soldier approaching her. She noticed how it was Levi and his squad, each practicing on their way, but Levi commanded attention when he effortless flung threw the trees, spinning his blades down at the nape of the target's neck. With such speed and force, the entire dummy came apart, the rubber flying into pieces.

Levi had noticed that Elyse had stopped and landed on a branch close to her. "Done already? I thought you wanted to practice." He pulled out a cloth and began to wipe his blades, which didn't look the lease bit dirty as he scrubbed it.

Before she could answer, the was a loud, high pitched groan from down below the trees, "Levi, you went and broke my Titan!" It was Hange who looked almost distressed as she ran around picking up the shattered pieces. "Do you know how long it takes to make these things!?" She was in her gear too, but Elyse had no idea that she was down there.

"These sloppy things?"

There was another groan from Hange, who clearly wasn't supporting Levi's opinion. Elyse noticed there was another scout following her around, looking even more distressed over Hange's position in the woods.

"Squad Leader Hange, please! We should get back! It's not safe down here."

Hange only continued collecting her broken dummy, "Moblit, it's all right. We're completely fine!" More soldiers came flying threw the air, each one causing Moblit to duck and call out for his leader, who looked unphased by the commotion.

"As for you." Levi's voice caught her off guard, who only a few feet from now. He was sheathing his weapons when he stared at her arms. Once in range, Levi grabbed them quickly, feeling her biceps tightly. "You need to strengthen your arms more. You barely made cut through the nape. Real Titans are much tougher than that cheap shit."

The sudden touch made Elyse apprehensive, his hands coarse and sweaty from holding the swords. His proximity made her shift and look for any distraction to avoid the flushness of his touch. "What you want me to do? Fight you again?"

Levi released her arms and eyed her carefully, "That went so well for you last time." He turned away, readying himself. "You and your big feet couldn't land a single hit."

Elyse grabbed a loose twig, tossing it at him carelessly. "You're such a butthead." The words just came out of her, half impressed that maybe she came up with a leveling comeback and half shocked that she said that to her commanding officer. It was a juvenile phrase, but his reaction hit right on the mark. Levi was full of such remarks that it wasn't like she really insulted him, right?

Levi instantly turned around, eyes wide from her sudden choice of words. "What did you just say?"

His reaction sprung an immediately response out of her, who quickly shot off deeper into the woods, calling out a confident, "You heard me!" He could practically feel her self-satisfied smile.

"Tch, biggest shitty brat." He murmured to himself, eyes narrowing as she sped off without him. He had been called many things in his lifetime, but that was a new one.

Training continued as usual, Levi slicing away at any free target while keeping a mindful of Elyse's strategy and dexterity. She was better at placement and tact than at consistent skill shots, though that could be fixed with time. However, the legion didn't have time, nor did it truly matter in the face of battle whether the soldiers were ready. Levi had seen many perish at bad positioning and bad skill calls. Even at moment when a position was good, it took a second for things to get completely out of hand out there in Titan country.

He had no trouble, but the other soldiers couldn't match his skill. Levi wasn't egoistical about it, there was something in him that made him…not human. He couldn't ever describe it personally, but he justified it with the ideology of using mathematic. If you do it correctly once, there are no errors and you solve the problem. That's how fighting was to him, it just made sense.

Levi's team had swarmed around him, landing firmly on the ground as they all huffed with exhaustion from their training session.

"It sure is hot for being a cool day." Gunther stated, wiping off sweat that was dripping from his forehead. The rest puffed in agreeance, pulling out their water containers to satisfy their thirst.

"Yeah. Definitely be nice to cool off by the lake." Erd stated, glancing at the other section of the woods.

Elyse was the last to join them, hopping down gracefully as she sheathed her blades. "You guys have a lake?" She was surprised at the thought of it. She had never been outside Wall Sina and though they had the river, it wasn't comparable to the beauty of a lake. She only saw pictures of the wilderness in books.

Petra turned and smiled at the girl, "Yeah!" She touched her shoulder and pointed into the direction Erd was staring. "It's right back there. It's really refreshing, and the water is really clear. It's really pretty."

Elyse smiled brightly, "Really?! Wow! Hey Levi-"

"No." It didn't take him long to know where this was going.

"But- "It was Petra this time, but the dark-haired captain cut her off too.

"No."

"Come on, Levi. Don't be such a stiff." Elyse said bravely, smiling warmly at him to get him to reconsider. She had planned to call him by his title, but she still felt rebellious about it. She wasn't doing it to be disrespectful, but she noticed he listened more closely when she said his name. His sharp eyes landed on her, sharping as she spoke. "We have been working hard."

Erd looked down at Levi, "It has been awhile since we've all gone, and it is a nice day."

Auruo butted in, trying to match Levi's shrill gaze, narrowing his eyes slightly at Petra and Elyse, though his disapproving look was more directed at the blonde. "Tsk, isn't there better things to do?" Petra merely rolled her eyes at his response. Of course, he was going to reject their fun.

Elyse wasn't sure why, but after Auruo finished, Levi replied with a deep sigh, "Fine." Which earned Petra and Elyse's approval before they both ran off to get a head start.

Gunther smiled, watching the two girls. "They do seem rather close."

"In squad full of guys," Erd started, rubbing his neck, "Must be tough to be the only girl."

"Tsk, I'm sure we're better company than that kid." Auruo inquired, shutting his eyes as he walked, "She came from Wall Sina right? What exactly did she do before coming here that got her into the Scouts?"

They all turned to Levi, always curious, but never really asking. It wasn't like they had much time for conversation like this and it wasn't like the captain to divulge such gossip. They all hoped to understand why her case so different than the traditional course of training.

Levi remained relatively quiet for some time before giving a simple, yet vague answer, "She pissed off the Military Police."

"What? Really?" Gunther winced, everyone knew that they were a force you wanted to dodge pissing off. They already had such an easy life within the walls as it was, and they could bend the rules without cause.

Erd sighed, "That's almost unbelievable. I can't imagine her doing anything to the MP, let alone someone from Sina getting into trouble. Isn't she like a noble or something?"

Levi's eyes narrowed slightly, his eyes targeted on Elyse's back as she disappeared past the woods. "Merchant family. Highly connected from what the MP dug up. Not sure why she'd throw it all away."

"And they made her come here?"

"She originally was planned to be thrown in jail or even be sentenced to the underground. Erwin thought she'd serve better here." The very thought of the blonde woman living in the very place that was the epitome of filth made his hands twitch. She could be a decent assailant, but she would've succumbed to that place sooner than later. Females had it bad down there, the center attraction to many unmentionable activities that surely were unescapable for most. Dying for humanity would've been a better alternative, but either way her fate was secured.

"Can't say that's a fair trade," Erd spoke humbly. "An eye for an eye, I suppose though." They all knew what it meant to be a soldier and for someone like Elyse to take away any trace of freedom was very ignorant of her. However, she had been working hard to keep up with the others so there had to be some redeemable qualities. She practice as a soldier, not once asking for special treatment or bringing up her social class. It was refreshing to know that she wasn't going to cause that kind of trouble. She was here to stay after all.

The moment the crystal blue water caught her eye, Elyse stopped, mouth gaping at it's beauty. "Wow…you weren't kidding."

The cerulean water sparkled in the suns ray, dancing quietly. The lake wasn't very big, the dense forest surrounded the lonely body of water, locked in its little place in the world. Elyse was surprised that such a peaceful place could even be claimed by the Scouts. Crammed in the walls, people are piled up on top of one another, blocked away from the natural green and shimmer of the world. If a place like this could exist, maybe there were many more beautiful, hidden places out there. If only the Titans didn't exist, ripping apart of any chance of freedom they might of have. Elyse wouldn't dwell on it so negatively, this was prettiest places she had ever been, and it wasn't some fancy building in Sina.

Petra smiled happily, letting a soft sigh escape her as she took it in as well. "Told you." She tapped her friends shoulder lightly, "Come on."

As the two approached the water, Petra knelt to remove her boots. She tossed them to the side while undoing her green cape and rolled up her white pants. She tiptoed over to the edge, placing her feet within the water slowly. She looked over at Elyse, who was still looking around. Petra patted the space next to her, beckoning her to join.

Elyse followed, looking down at the waters edge. She saw her reflection within the water, reminding her of that dream she had of herself. Her hair was still in that tight little braid, not yet free of her chains. That vision of herself danced in her head, buzzing in her head of how desperately she wanted to be free. She had locked herself in shackles for all these years and it was time to be free. It was time to release the tight hold of the braid and let it be wild.

"It's time."

The voice rang in her head, echoing from deep within her. She silently agreed, it was time to take a step forward and to move on from the past. She felt the hesitation, the chains clutching tighter to her wrists, but she pulled forward. Gingerly, Elyse's fingers touched the tiny band at the end of her hair and removed it slowly, watching how her hair eagerly bounced free from the hold. It framed her face softly, waving along her cheeks. The tightness in her heart seemed to ease, pleasing that inner hold when she realized that she was holding her breath. She the tingly of attention and looked down at Petra, who was staring at her with a perplexed look on her face.

"You okay?" She asked, watching her. Petra hadn't known Elyse that long, but she had a pretty good read on people. Elyse had seemed lost while she was looking down at the water. She thought for a moment that maybe she was afraid of the water, but when she smiled, Petra could tell that maybe that wasn't it after all. For being so close, Petra realized she knew nothing about her. There were rumors about her, but none of them really seemed true.

"Yeah, just remembered something." Elyse said as she rolled up her own white jeans, copying as she placed her feet within the water. Her mouth gaped slightly from the shock of the chilly water, but let a soft sigh escaped once it settled.

"You are okay though, right?"

For a moment, Elyse almost wanted to tell Petra her secret, but the approaching footsteps changed her mind. Elyse glanced back, seeing that the men finally caught up to them. As she looked, the captain's met her gaze. Electricity shot through her, feeling the buzzing sensation that seemingly brought essence back into her. It was the he looked at that made that inescapable feeling creep up from the deep, reminding her of their fight session together. He was pure energy, intense and brutal strength that resonated with her from somewhere. It wasn't exactly sexual, but primitive in the intimacy of fighting. Combat with Levi exposed her to many truths about herself, one being that her lack of connection was others had bled over into her physical world. To be physical was more of an outlet for her now, speaking the words she just couldn't say.

She couldn't describe to her parents how lonely she was, let alone form the words to even admit to her youngest self. That disconnect manifested the split emotionally but moving – running through the backends of Sina, flying with the 3D maneuvering gear, and to fighting with Levi released that tension. She may not be able to verbalize it, but that release was flooding out of her like an open wound. She tried her best to control her desires, but her focus on Levi was more than she could handle. When they weren't training or mocking each other, the silence between them reminded her of how she felt.

Elyse looked away, letting her sunny hair hide her expression as she quickly looked for an action. She was looking for something, anything to distract her from the intrusive realization. With her face flushing, she cupped the cold liquid and splashed her face with it. The water chilled the heat from her face. It dripped down from her chin when she heard the voices of Gunther, Erd, and Auruo conversing with Petra like they normally did.

Erd looked down at Levi, who was standing behind the group. "We might as well enjoy ourselves while we have the chance." The blonde man spoke, trying to encourage the seemingly reluctant shorter man. From Levi's low response of approval, he followed suit to join his comrades. Erd was right, life was fleeting.

As they gathered around Petra, he noticed how Elyse was relatively alone among them. He watched somberly as she looked back towards him only to turn away quickly. In the rare moments that she would be silent and still, he could almost see her. He could see the woman who didn't just throw her life away, but a call to truth. The light in her eyes flickered at him, exposing herself for a split of second before she looked away. There was yearning within them, a look he was familiar with, but how could a person from a life of leisure have that same look as one from the underground? The desperation to be found, to be liberated, to be more than what they are…why did Elyse have the same look?

Against his better judgment, Levi approached Elyse's side, placing himself next to her as the laughter of the others rang through the crisp air. His action caused another glance from Elyse, eyeing him skeptically as he removed his boots. He expected her to bring up conversation, mocking him as she liked, but there it was just silence between them.

To his surprise, Elyse laid her back against the ground, and tucked her arms behind her head. Levi stole a glance, noticing how she kept her eyes closed, seemingly enjoying the peace. Her light-colored hair beamed brightly in the sunshine, free from that braid she normally sported. Her feet were gently kicking underneath the water, creating a small current with the motion.

Perhaps they all needed a break. Their lives were exposed to hell and this decompression could be what he needed. People weren't here who he wanted, but as soldiers, they had to keep looking forward. He tried to follow and to relax so easily like her, but it was hard with so many troubles on his mind. He remembered the conversation he had with Erwin about that upcoming party that would soon reveal their next expedition. He looked down at Elyse again, she to be the catalyst for the next excursion into hell. It was starting to make sense why Erwin had to seemed to intent on having someone like her join their ranks unwillingly. She had connections to those with deep pockets and connections, but it wouldn't benefit them if she did die on their missions. Perhaps Erwin had another plan for her, though he was sure it had something to do with leaving the untrained girl to his command. Regardless of whatever plan Erwin had up his sleeve, Levi would leave it up to his commander. Erwin did seem to have a better grasp on the future, eyes always looking forward, never behind. As far as he was concerned, Levi was just a weapon to rid the world of the Titans. Nothing more, nothing less.

"You look tired." Elyse's soft voice cut through his thoughts, sending him back to reality. She was looking up at him now, no longer avoiding him like before.

She noticed how the bags underneath his eyes were weighing heavier than before, their depth cunning and bruised. His narrow eyes lingered on her, a silent agreement between them though words wouldn't reach them. Elyse had caught him in quite the predicament last night, his body clutching to a desperate slumber that only caused him to ache for more. He was tired, but he couldn't admit that to her, nor to anybody. He had to keep moving, the soldier within him never resting until the battle was won, or until no more died so carelessly to the jaws of the enemy. It was his reality and Levi didn't want anyone to carry his burden. Elyse catching him so susceptible was threatening to his silent resolve.

But she kept her eyes on him, waiting his answer. Levi looked away, her blueness beginning to wash away his chilly exterior. Her placidness was alluring, warm and inviting, but he immediately knew that feeling this way was dangerous. He had enough problems and inviting her in wasn't safe. He had enough blood on his hands and hers adding to the stain wasn't something he wanted to deal with. He did the only thing he knew how and it was to keep her out.

"You're the one sleeping." Levi said nonchalantly, staring uninterestedly at the sunlight sitting along the water's horizon.

Elyse closed her eyes again, soaking up the sunshine and disregarding his indifference. She could tell he wasn't really irked by her statement, though appearing uninterested, he almost seemed sad. He was the captain of scouting legion, and with that Elyse knew came misery and burden in this line of work. However, with the sun beaming down on them, Elyse felt that maybe a lighter tone could help appease his apprehensions. With the stressed tensions in his face, Elyse decided to give him something else to think about. Levi never did smile and maybe he needed some relief from his secret tensions too. He unknowing helped her so it was only fair for her to return the favor, if he'd let it.

With a slight stretch of her back, Elyse groaned a reply, "Hmm, maybe." She shut her eyes again, taking in the sun's warmth. "You should try it. Maybe make you feel better."

"Tch."

His familiar response caused her to laugh, sitting up to engage with him, "You don't sleep, do you?"

Levi's sharp eyes pointed at her as she teased him again. "Of course, I do. Don't be stupid."

"I bet you don't take advantage of moments like this either. All work and no play. You're Captain Serious all the time." Her cerulean iris beamed at him playing as she smiled smugly at him. Levi knew what she was doing; challenging him again. However, he wasn't sure how he liked her analysis of him. He had his moments where he wasn't always serious, he was funny…in a dark kind of way. No one really laughed at his humor though. Levi wouldn't get close, but he could prove to her that he wasn't "Captain Serious", whatever that meant.

Levi's kicked up his foot, causing a massive splash of water to cover Elyse. The wave was large and came fast, soaking her. "Whoops."

His flatness caused her to respond, cupping the lake water within her hands, and flipped it towards him. It soaked his shirt and leather jacket, causing Elyse to laugh in response at his tense expression. "How about that then?"

Levi felt something beat hard in his chest, though he didn't react on it as he retaliated by grabbing her back shirt and effortlessly flipping her into the lake. With a calm demeanor, he announced, "I win."

Elyse emerged from the water, wiping the wetness from her eyes. The warm sun suddenly poked her skin with an icy chill, rubbing her cool arms as she shivered. "That wasn't fair." Though she lost, she felt content. Levi's expression seemed softer somehow, though it seemed short lived.

Petra and Gunther laughed playfully, while Auruo scoffed at her. "That's what you get for provoking Captain Levi."

Auruo was the only one standing among them, posed with his arms crossed, and trying his best not to seem to have fun. As a conceited expression tugged on his lip, Petra chopped the back of his knees with a strong hand, causing him to stumble into the pool of water as well.

"Like it's hard, Auruo." Petra stated with a satisfied smile on her lips.

Auruo emerged from the lake in a panic, cravat stuck to his face as he desperately tried to straighten out his messy form. "Not funny, Petra!" He exclaimed, breaking his cool demeanor as he climbed out of the lake.

Elyse laughed softly, reaching the water's edge, and pulled herself out. She walked over to her pile of clothes, pulling her dry cloak over herself to keep warm. She looked back at the group, catching the captain's stare once more.

Why is he staring? She thought, realizing that their exchange had caused her heart to race unexpectedly again. Elyse looked away as she drained the water from her long hair, wondering if anyone else had noticed her behavior. Perhaps it's too obvious…

Before she could further identify her dilemma, the group decided to wrap up their time off and to head back to headquarters.

As they walked, Petra and Elyse hung back, chatting amongst themselves out of earshot of the others. Elyse wrapped her cloak tighter around her, her damp clothes chilling her to the bone as she listened to Petra talk about her father and life before joining the Scouts.

"So it's just me and my dad. I write to him a lot since we don't really have time to see family." She tucked her hair behind her ears, reminiscing thoughtfully about her family. "What about you Elyse? Do you have parents?"

The question caught her off guard, Elyse realized that she never talked about her personal life to other than Levi, which was limited anyway. There were things she wanted to say but wasn't sure on what. Elyse wasn't good with this sort of thing, but it felt nice to hear about Petra's life. Surely, there were things she couldn't say, but indulging about her parents wasn't off limits conversation. The only one Elyse felt like sharing was her mother, who's presence had a haunting effect on her decisions as of late. "Yeah, my mom lives in Wall Sina." Elyse's traced her memory of her mother, feeling so distant to her now. She could almost see her mother's hair tied in that bun, always so polite and punctual. She could see her face, scolding her when she slept too much or didn't dress up to her standards, but there were good things too. After a long day, Elyse would lie on her mother's lap and she would play with her hair. These tender moments made her miss her more and could feel the rip of guilt for betraying her this way. Elyse's actions could've deeply affected her mother's business and thus, her livelihood. It never occurred to Elyse the pain her mother must have felt to know that there was such darkness within her only child.

"And your father?" The last memory she had of him was in that courtroom, holding his mother tight as they awaited her sentence. She didn't have a lot of memories of the man, he mostly traveled to the other Walls for business. Elyse's response was automatic, conditioned by years of separation, "He travels a lot. I don't really see him until he decides to come home so it was just me and my mom for a long time."

Petra could tell by Elyse's dull expression that there was an issue about her father, so she decided not to pry. It didn't feel right to push her, knowing so little about her.

"It's good that you're close to your dad." The words were almost sad, troubling even. Petra loved her father and couldn't imagine not having his support and love in her life.

"Well, at least you were close to your mother." Petra stated, trying to cheer her up. The statement was loaded, but it wasn't as if Petra knew about her life or all of the emptiness that followed. If there was a time to let go, this would be it. Elyse was here to stay among them and if her relationship with Petra continued to grow, she owed it to her to tell her the truth before someone else discovered it. At least Petra's rejection would happen now rather than later when the pain would be too great.

It only took a moment for Petra to realize that Elyse didn't follow and turned towards her still friend. There was a somber expression spreading across Elyse's face, her bright blue eyes were subdued to a cavernous navy. "Actually…" she trailed off, looking for the right words

Petra recognized this expression from earlier, apprehending that there was something deeper going on around Elyse. There were times when she appeared dazed, lost deep within thought then soon would recover with a placid smile. It worried her; the stress of a soldier weighed heavy on each and everyone of them and if they weren't dedicated to this life, there would be soul wrecking consequences. However, she wasn't sure if the issue was her dedication, Elyse had been working extra hard to keep up with them, almost seeming to enjoy the training. Petra continued to listen, waiting for the burden that heavily buried on Elyse.

Elyse opened her mouth to speak, feeling the tightness wrap around her throat. Her mind was plagued with the words, dancing around in a frenzy as she recalled her dream once more. It was becoming increasingly difficult to remember, but with it's final scene playing it her mind, she steadied herself. Shards of glass floated around her as her sword pierced through, breaking away the illusion into thousands of pieces.

"I'm…I'm not a good person."

Petra's hazel eyes burned with disagreement, those words surprised her. "Of course you're a good person! Why would you think you're not?"

"But it's true." Elyse's face hardened, "Do you know the real reason I'm here?"

Petra was confused, shaking her head. She knew of the rumors, but the truth? Levi had kept that information secret and he was vault. Petra wouldn't lie, she was very curious to the circumstances of her arrival.

"I was sent here to die." The truth seemed to startle them both, silence filled the air as Elyse tried to come to terms with her choices and existence. "I'm a thug. I stole from everyone I knew, and I lied every day to keep people from knowing the real me…even my own mother. So to answer your question…no, we weren't close." The memory of lying on her mother's lap started to rip apart, regret burning it like a flame to paper. Elyse may have helped Brian, but it didn't dispute to the fact that she did such criminal acts to other people. To help Brian meant sacrificing a piece of herself. Standing here now, it almost didn't feel worth it. She loved Brian, but that part of her was tearing up inside. Who did she become to help him? Why did she steal? She could've bought him food, provided shelter, and care…perhaps she wasn't any different than the scums she hated, afraid to be seen for who she really was. She was a fraud, and she hated herself even more.

Petra approached her slowly, trying to understand the truth that was emerging. "Why would you do that?"

The hate was bleeding out of her, causing her shake from the realization that she hated herself. She had sliced away the illusion, but what was she supposed to do with herself? She felt her body start to shake from the pressure, raising her hands to cover the humiliation on her face. It was the ugly truth about herself, the weakness that drilled inside of her.

"I couldn't live. I felt so trapped all the time." Her voice was breaking, the elevation of her emotions was fluctuating too fast for her, causing her to fall apart. It was the reality that she had been running from all these years. "I snapped. I threw my life away because I couldn't just be happy with what I had. Now this is all my life has to offer… Petra, it's so empty, it's so empty…" Hot tears silently streamed down her face, burning away the cold that once flushed her pale features. If she died tomorrow, there was nothing to show for it. She wasn't ever free, and she wasn't sure she ever would be, but now with the giant's hands swarming around her, Elyse wanted a do over. She wanted to laugh among friends, to feel valued and appreciated. There were moments where her heart desired to find companionship and love, but that felt too impossible in such a place.

Soft hands clasped along Elyse's tensed ones, Petra's warmth spreading back into her. Her words would forever change her. "You're a soldier now, Elyse. Maybe you always were and you just got lost trying to find it." Elyse caught Petra's kind smile, trying her best to comfort her. There was no rejection or judgment, just softness and the certainty that people could be understanding. "It doesn't matter who you were, but who you are. You're wearing the Wings of Freedom symbol now and with it, we are more than who we were before. We are soldiers who fight for humanity, Elyse. That's all you need to know."

Petra hugged the defeated blonde, feeling her still cold, wet body shiver against her. Elyse didn't hesitate, wrapped her arms around Petra's body, grateful met someone like her in her life. Maybe the world wasn't so cold all the time, maybe there were ways to still feel the sun. "You're a good friend…"

"I'm glad you consider me one." Petra petted her head, sympathizing with Elyse's plight. She may not have been able to understand her choices in life, but if there was one thing Levi taught her is not to judge people by their past lives. "And you know, to make you feel better, you should know that you and Captain Levi aren't so different. Though, if that's really the circumstances, I'm surprised he didn't tell you."

Elyse sniffled slightly, feeling herself beginning to calm down. All she wanted to do know was get warm and move forward, though Petra's word did get her attention. "Tell me what?"

"Oh I'm shocked. Though, he's not exactly approachable. Maybe he wouldn't say even if you two were twins. Captain Levi came from the underground."

A chill ran down Elyse's spine and it wasn't because she was cold, "What?"

Her shame fading as she realized that all of Levi's antics may have been completely justified. Perhaps that was why he was entirely reluctant on her joining their ranks and harsh in the beginning. If he was from the underground and she was from Sina, her way of life could have been insulting to someone like him where people fight for their lives down there daily. She had everything he didn't, and yet she chose to live like this. How ignorant she must have looked to him.

"I'm not sure on all the details, but before he joined the Survey Corps, he was actually a famous rogue down there."

"He never mentioned it." Elyse stated softly, thinking deeper about it. There was something familiar about a "Levi" from the underground, but the two of them couldn't be one in the same. There was no way the captain and that Levi were the same person. She heard rumors about the ruffian Levi from the underground a couple years ago when she started to get into the game. It didn't take long to hear stories or names considering that smack dead in the middle of Wall Sina, the crowned jewel city of the three walls lied the dark and restricted entrance to the underground. That Levi was super notorious for torturing the locals and military police at every angle down there. He was a real threat to any one in the game, his schemes putting them all to shame and flagged as dangerous. He was one person you didn't want to cross. Ever. Captain Levi was strong and skilled at killing Titans, but there was no way that Humanity's Strongest was infamous thug Levi.

"Well, no need worrying about it now. We should get going, you're freezing. You should get out of those clothes before they make you sick."

Elyse instantly felt better when she changed out of her damp clothes. She set them aside to have them dry out for later, exchanging her usual uniform for another shirt, putting on a warm dark blouse with her standard white pants, and military boots. She had brushed her out before it could dry, letting it fall straight for once. The change felt good, especially considering her meltdown in front of Petra. Though it was invasive, there was a sort of peace within her now, a stability she hadn't felt in a long time. She had to give herself some credit, she had conquered a lot of issues as of late. Who knew self-awareness was one of them.

It's funny what the fear of death can do I guess. Makes you think about things… she reasoned, believing that if she hadn't been forced to come here to question her existence, maybe she wouldn't have changed at all. There were still a lot of obstacles to overcome, each leading to a different path.

"Speaking of unfinished business," Elyse's eyes landed on the finished letters still sitting on her desk. All was left was to mail them and pray that her mother could forgive her. She had hoped that one day maybe they could talk about it, maybe even have the chance to say a proper goodbye this time around.

Elyse folded the two letters neatly and placed them in her back pants pocket. She would have to get permission to send them off and there was one person who had the authority over her to do such a task. After everything, she was weary to visit him now. She reflected on their time together, from the glares to the mischievousness… She was scared that she was so blatantly transparent to him and there were some things she rather keep secret. Elyse didn't believe in love anyway, figuring whatever was going on in her heart was just another silly notion that would soon pass with time.

She walked through the halls, sun beaming brightly through the windows. It was funny what a bright day could do such cold stone walls. Even approaching the captain's office looked inviting as the light luminated the decorated wooden door, though the man behind it usually was less sunny.

She knocked lightly, listening for a reply from the voice within before walking inside. Levi was there as usual, not inclined in his office chair like before. She wouldn't say that he was awake, but he was attentive with a cup of his favorite tea in one hand. He seemed a little surprised to see her, noticing how early she was. She wasn't due for her duties until much later.

Elyse shut the door behind her, staring at him cautiously. Petra's words still bouncing in her head about Levi being from the underground. Even if he despised her and the upper class, shouldn't he of all people understand why she did what she did? Levi was hard to read and even harder to approach about personal stuff.

"Yes?" He inquired, looking at her wearily. From her expression, he could tell that she meant business and not the clerical kind. She was here for a reason.

Elyse pulled out her two letters, showing them to him, "Not sure if you're the person to ask, but…" She trailed off, looking for some sort of cue. After a few seconds, Levi quietly lifted his hand to take her letters. She obliged, handing him her personals.

Levi set them on his desk, still noticing the intense look on her, "What?" It was much different than the docile expression she had at the lake. She was unpredictable, though most women were to him.

Elyse opened her mouth to speak, but the sound of knocking caught both of their attention. Erwin emerged from behind the door, his eyes catching Elyse's, seemingly to light up the moment they met. "Oh Elyse, good timing. I've been meaning to speak with you. How is training progressing?"

Elyse had never been more intimidated by a person in her entire life. She wasn't sure if it was because he was so tall or that he was like a ghost. She hadn't seen him since her trial and to find him looking for her caused certain panic. "It's going fine." She replied, watching him as he positioned himself in front of her.

"Good to hear. I have no doubts you'll be suited for the next expedition."

Elyse nodded slowly, the thought always in the back of her head, but never realizing how close the event was approaching. "Is that happening soon, sir?"

A strong smile appeared on Commander Erwin's lips, "No, you can rest easy. However, I was hoping to enroll your services." There was a quick glance over to Levi, who showed no intent of stopping Erwin's plan.

"My services?"

"Yes, but please, have a seat." Erwin gestured to the two empty chairs facing Levi's desk. Elyse quickly followed his direction, sitting as Erwin sat in the vacant one beside her. "Your family owes a dress store in Wall Sina, correct?"

"Yes."

His smile grew wider, pleased to hear her confirm this. "There is this military event coming up that is hosted in Sina. Though it would be customary for the leading Survey Corp officials to attend, I'm requesting your services for that night."

The mentioning of military party meant that it was the Martial Gala. It was a very formal social event that the cities center, hosting the top-ranking officials from each military branch as well as business people and nobles. Her mother's shop would be filled with people, desperate to get an appropriate outfit for the Gala. It was a busy time at the shop and Elyse didn't mind if the nobles weren't completely rigid, which most of them were. Not many of the military officials came to get fitted there, but it made her wonder how many times she did past by Erwin and Levi and never suspected that they would be a part of her life now. Elyse supposed that Erwin was aware of her family's connection to such events and perhaps needed the keys.

"Oh? The Martial Gala? Well, I wasn't really good with formal wear, but I'm sure my mom, Cassandra, is better to help you with that. I'm sure she'd be more than happy to suit you all for the party. She lives for these events."

Erwin chuckled lightly, "That's good to know, that would be advantageous. However, I was hoping you would join us."

Elyse glanced at Levi, trying to decipher what all this meant. His monotone expression didn't reveal much besides for a bored look. He was sipping his tea quietly, leaving Elyse to Erwin. "Wait, you want me to go?"

"Yes."

The shock spread across her features, going back to Sina was the last thing on her mind. Elyse didn't expect to go back, wanting to leave her life in Sina in the past. She wouldn't be able to hide from her confession behind a letter when she would present. It had been weeks since that fateful day, but this felt all too soon. "I…I…"

"Your display caused quite the uproar back in Sina. How seamless would it be for us to bring you along, showing everyone that you're not a threat. It would indeed be a great service to the Survey Corps if you joined us. And you would get to see your family. I'm sure you miss them."

Elyse's family was exactly who she tried to run from, however she was sure there was more than what Erwin was leading too. But he was her superior now. What choice did she have? "What exactly do you need to do?"

The Commander flashed a handsome smile, "Just be outgoing. Talk with the nobles and other soldiers, show them how the Legion has reformed you. Show them that you stand for humanity."

Elyse felt herself inwardly sigh, if there was one thing worse than Titans, it was rich nobles. Talking with them wouldn't be easy considering how she stole from many of them, getting them to believe that she wasn't a threat would take a lot of manipulation tactics. Stealing was a quiet act, but networking was on a whole other skill level. She wasn't sure how charming she could be, but she would do it for the Legion and for Erwin, whatever his true intentions. "I'll do my best."

Pleased, Erwin reached out his hand. "I have no doubt that you'll do well." Elyse took his hand, shaking on the deal. She would go to the Gala, back to Sina, and try to allure the worse people in the world. It was going to be a great night.

When she left, Levi finally broke his silence. "You didn't tell her why."

Erwin's smile was erased from his face, her blood already on his hands now that she accepted. He truly had no doubt that Elyse would succeed, he had been secretly watching from afar. She camouflaged herself well and her origins would guide her at the event. However, in her succeeding meant more death. It was the weight of being Commander of the Legion. Sacrifices would have to be made. "If she knew that we are relying on her to charm the nobles for expedition funds, I don't think she would achieve the goal. She would think about death."

That was the endgame though, funds for blood. Without the coffers, their expeditions meant nothing. They would be as useless as the Military Police, sitting on their asses while humanity crumbles. Levi wouldn't say he liked this plan, feeding Elyse to wolves, but he trusted Erwin's judgement. If he said jump, he would do it and Elyse would learn to do the same. It was the gamble for humanity's future after all and they were running out of time.
