Medusa's laugh echoed throughout the room. Soul's eyes were closed, and his whole body shook in anger. Before he could do anything drastic a calm voice spoke in front of him.
"Medusa, I don't know how you got in here, but I think it's best if you leave now and do not come back" Wes said.
Medusa's smile fell and she stared daggers at the older man. "I AM Soul's fiancé; I have a right to see my betrothed."
"Medusa, you know the situation. Soul is not going to be marrying you as long as I am around. Now please, you have disrupted things in our home enough and I must set to work righting your wrongs immediately so please leave without a struggle."
Medusa's laugh once again rung out through the entire room, and the smile returned to her lips. "Fine I'll leave peacefully, but this isn't over. One day you won't be here to protect little Soul, and that's when I'll be there" she walked over and whispered in soul's ear, "I'll be waiting for you Soul- baby." And then she walked out
"Wes…Maka…we did stuff then Medusa came in and…" Soul's face had a look of pure pain on it. "Wes she hates me now…she's never going to want to speak to me again and I just… I'm falling for her."
"I know Soul. It'll be okay. Just talk to her." Wes hugged his brother, and hoped that Maka would hear him out.
Two weeks had passed since Medusa showed up and Maka was still ignoring Soul. She went to school and did her work with a blank expression. She had given herself to this boy, who was just using her. She spoke to him only when her job required her to do so.
At school the next day they got a big surprise.
"I'm so excited for the school camping trip!" Patty exclaimed.
For the next couple of days it was all the students could talk about. They were going to be going to a summer camp and spending a weekend there doing various activities. The majority of students were ecstatic about this news, while others had other things on their mind….
The bus ride there was awfully noisy Soul thought. He was sitting in a seat with Blackstar who was actually the one creating most of the noise. Maka sat with Tsubaki, Patty with Liz, and Kid sat with Crona. Soul was thinking of ways to get Maka to talk to him because her rejection was killing him; while Maka was thinking of how to avoid Soul. The others in their group knew something had gone down, and they were planning on bringing the two back together over the trip. Little did any of them know that many things were going to be changed that weekend.
They got to the campground and set up their tents; there weren't any cabins on the grounds, but Stein thought that the class would have a richer experience closer to nature anyways.
"Alright everyone partner up!" Stein called. "We are going to go on a nice hike to the top of that cliff over there to eat our lunches!" Stein grabbed his fellow instructor, Marie, by the waist and pulled her toward the path.
"Tsubakiiiii, get your butt over here. Your God does not like to be kept waiting." BlackStar yelled.
She gave a sympathetic look that said 'I'm sorry' to Maka for leaving her. Maka took a quick glance around and noticed all of her friends partnering up. Liz had grabbed Kid, and Crona hid behind Patti. She groaned as she saw Soul slowly make his way toward her with his head down.
"I'm sorry maks, but I guess you're stuck with me." He watched her storm up the path and sighed before following behind her. He caught up to her quickly and grabbed the pack from her back. "Here I'll carry that for you." He then dropped back a couple steps from her to give her the space she obviously wanted.
"Whatever, Soul…I'm not a helpless child. I could have carried my own bag."
The walk up was tiring and uneventful. It took them about forty-five minutes to reach the cliff. Once there Stein had called to the students to let them know that they had two hours to eat and explore before heading back down.
The group had decided to sit down and eat first because their stomachs had been growling from the strenuous walk up here. They sat under the shade of some trees and opened up their lunches. Soul grabbed Maka's out of her pack and set in front of her without even looking at her. Immediately Maka began to feel bad as she remembered that she had trying so hard to forget about Soul that she didn't even think to make him a lunch! She watched guiltily as he unzipped his pack and pulled out a lunch of his own. Maka stared at him in disbelieve. "Where did you get that?"
"Believe it or not, I am not a helpless child Maka. I know how to cook."
Maka just stared at him as he opened his lunch and pulled out an intricately made sandwich. The two ate in silence as the rest of the group was lively as ever. BlackStar had shoveled his food in his mouth and was already up swinging from the trees shouting about being a God. Tsubaki silently admired her partner from the ground.
Once they had finished they decided to walk around. Maka was completely engrossed with the scenery and didn't notice the big branch in front of her. Her foot snagged on it and she began to topple down when a pair of strong hands grabbed her from behind and pulled her back upwards. She looked around in amazement about to thank her savior when she saw that it was Soul and her face fell. She mumbled thanks as he awkwardly looked at his feet. He rubbed the back of his neck and said 'you're welcome' before walking past her.
Stupid, stupid, stupid….why do I have to keep messing everything up. She frickin' hates me. SO UNCOOL. I had to go and ruin everything. All I want is her, and she just hates me.
Soul banged his head against a tree. Thinking about how much he hates himself when he heard the whistle that meant they had to all meet up and head down. The group slowly made their way back to the cliff to meet the rest of their classmates and go back to camp.
Soul was yet again partnered with Maka, and he kept his space behind her letting her make her away along the path as he followed like a lost puppy. They were walking down a thin past next to a gulley when all of sudden they heard the ground rumble and a splitting noise. Soul watched with pained eyes as he saw Maka falling towards the gulley.
Maka lay on the ground with her eyes closed. She knew she was going to be hurt, but was too afraid to move and find out the damage. She noticed something warm surrounding her, and she finally opened her eyes to realize Soul was holding on to her. After he had watched her fall from the shaky path he had jumped after her to protect her. Maka moved quickly out of his arms, to find out if he was okay. She noticed his t-shirt was torn and he had cuts all along his back, arms, and face from sliding down the rocky hill.
She gently helped him stand up and helped him balance his weight on her shoulder. He had hit his head hard and probably had a concussion. Luckily Stein was close by and was able to slide down the steep hill to the teenagers. He hoisted Soul on to his back, and he and Maka started their trek up towards the others. It was a struggle, and Maka slipped several times but they eventually got back to the top. Stein carried Soul the rest of the way down the cliff and took him back to his tent. He left Marie in charge of the others as he tended to Soul's wounds.
Night had fallen before Soul left his tent. He was ordered strictly from Stein to remain there and recover. He begrudgingly laid in his tent listening to the others have fun with a water fight, preparing dinner, and sitting around a campfire. He overheard a large group of girls talking about how he was a hero, and that they help tend to him when they got back to school. He knew Maka would be pissed if she heard that too, and he groaned to himself.
He felt the overwhelming urge to pee which is the reason he left his tent. He made his way into the forest to some tree. The rain had started to fall about an hour ago driving everyone back into the tents. He undid his zipper, and began to 'take a leak' against the tree as he heard the first cackle of lightning and the rumble of thunder that followed after. He finished his business quickly, and began to walk back when he saw a blur run past him. He caught a glimpse of ashen blonde hair and began his pursuit after her.
Of course the storm has scared her right out of her tent, and into the forest for cover. She ran for what felt like fifteen minutes before stopping in front of a large oak tree. She cowered against it as the next flash of lightning struck. All of sudden she felt those familiar large hands pull her against his chest.
"Maka you idiot, I wish you'd quit running away from me."
She stared up with shocked wide eyes as Soul began to rub the small of her back reassuringly. He is always there to save me, and all I ever do is cause him pain… Wait but what about his fiancé? Wasn't he just using me? I'm so confused.
Soul sighed as he felt her stiffen his arms. "I guess it's time to explain everything to you then maks. It's a long personal story, but you deserve to hear it. You see… my parents are rich business tycoons, and they want my brother and me to follow in their footsteps. Ever since we were children they bred us to be high- society people. We were made to play instruments, take lessons, and attend upper-class schools like everyone else in the family does. Then I hit my teenage years, and I couldn't take it anymore. I snapped…I began to rebel. I stopped playing, I stopped going to school, and I just stopped doing everything my parents wanted. And that was when Medusa began to notice me. I was just entering high school, and she was just graduating college. She was a business associate of my parents whom they wanted a strong connection with. Her company had been growing exponentially, and my parents wanted in. One night they invited her over for dinner, and she has been sinking her claws in me ever since. She has been trying to pursue me, but I always tell her I'm not interested in being her play thing. Finally six months ago at dinner she announced to my parents that she wanted to propose a deal. She wanted to marry me, and through that marriage I'd become her business partner. My parents were overjoyed, but I refused. Ever since my parents had been pressuring me into the marriage, and then a couple months ago my brother and I left home. He felt sympathy for me, so he said he would talk to Mother and Father and try to get them to see reason. Until they do, Wes has hidden me in his house with him, away from my parent's reach. His two conditions were that I must stay in school, and I must continue to follow my dreams of playing music. I have never loved Medusa. She just refuses to let me go, and it seems like she now knows where I am. The only person I care about it you Maka"
Soul finished his long story and laid his head in the crook of Maka's neck. She finally felt the full weight of her conscious sink in as she realized how horribly the boy in front of her was hurt. She felt so guilty. She pulled up his head to see the tears in his eyes. She closed her lips down onto his, and tried to make him forget all he has gone through. He pulled away, and tuckered her in against his chest as they lay under the big oak tree, the storm completely forgotten.
Their friends had no idea what changed overnight, but Soul and Maka were sitting together on the bus ride back. They were holding hands, and Maka laid her head down on Soul's shoulder. While Soul had the biggest smile they had ever seen plastered on his face. He was unconditionally happy for the first time in his life, and he didn't care what kind of trouble waited for him back at home.
For all of you wondering about Medusa being his Fiancé, it's because I wanted her to be the villain not because they were actually engaged! Sorry for the long wait. College has been kicking my butt; however I'm finished for the summer. Hope to update as soon as the next part of the story comes to me! Review please!
Love always,
ElizaBebe ;)
