Chapter twenty eight – Charlie
Charlie's POV
Twenty years ago…
"What do you mean you want to leave?" I was stood on the platform that lead up to the three kings, it was something I knew I had to fight to get but I would, I'd fight to hell and back for my freedom.
"I no longer want to be part of the guard and wish for my freedom," I spoke with my head down, an act of respect as well as the fact I didn't want them to see me roll my eyes.
"It's for that girl isn't it? That weird human that you've been seeing, I told you brothers no good would come out of this!" Caius shouted as the others nodded in agreement. I knew it wasn't going to be easy, knew as soon as I came into the room but I was going to stay until they let me leave.
"Yes it is but I was thinking about this anyway, it's time for me to move on and explore the world, settle down and have a child of my own, I know I promised to help you but I have served my time." I tried to reason I knew raising my voice was a bad idea, so calm and collected was my tactic for this.
They stood silent for a moment waiting as they had one of those silent chats I hated them having, they stared between one another as if reading each other's minds, but after ten minutes of this, just as I was about to yell for them to speak, they did.
"You've promised to serve us and to guard us for as long as we need you, that time hasn't come yet," it was Aro who spoke now, "so we have to come to some sort of arrangement," already I wasn't liking where this was going. "You have a choice to make now Charlie, you can either leave, live your life with that woman, or you can stay, protect us like you'd promised to do, the choice is yours," was that it? Was that all I had to choose from?
"But we must warn you Charlie," Marcus was the one to speak now. "If you choose to leave then you must pay the price, we will take the child in which you so desperately want, when it has come of age and has come across their powers, we will have it for our guard."
This was out of order, how dare they ask me something like this, but I couldn't complain, I knew they'd do this; it was just a good job I knew what to do also.
"Are they your terms?"
"Yes," they answered together.
"Then I shall stay," I nodded my head, bowed before leaving the room, feeling their smiles of victory hit my back, little did they know I had a plan myself.
-)-
Midnight, or hunting hour as the kings called it, it was the perfect time to escape, to be with Renee, I knew it was a risk to the both of us for us to run away like this but I didn't care, I could keep us safe until we got far away, then I'd cloak our identities, I'd change the way we looked and then we were free.
I was walking through the halls at this time, the castle was empty which I was grateful for, no one was here, they'd all gone to feed in the throne room. So I had to be quick.
I walked as quietly as I could, I'd casted a spell on my feet before as to cloak the noise, but I still tried to keep quiet as I made my way through the familiar halls and towards the hidden door I was sure only I knew about.
I moved quicker than as I neared the door, I was a little excited I had to admit but wouldn't others if they were running away from the most powerful vampires to be with the woman they loved? Guess it was probably just me, but I didn't stop I carried on. Hearing footsteps edged me forward more, there were people coming, I knew they were vampires, I could smell them but that didn't stop me from attempting to pick up the pace, slotting through the door just in time as the voices passed.
"I thought the kings never turned back on their word or turn their backs when someone's chosen?" I knew that voice, Felix and that's when I sighed with relief that I'd also masked my scent.
"They don't but they think Charlie will," my ears perked up, "they know he'll stay with the human so they need to make sure they always have someone of power here," Demetri replied.
"Yeah but his child, they have never gone that far before," I tried to hold back my gasp; although I wasn't surprised I still felt anger at what they were saying.
"I know but it's their rules, we have to keep an eye out and watch him."
I didn't stay to listen to any more then as I picked up my pace and ran from the hall and out of the back, which happened to have a car waiting with her in it.
"Charlie," she sighed in relief, "I was worried you wouldn't make it," she spoke as she drove then, not giving me time to fasten my seat belt.
"So was I but I'm here, you need to speed up though Renee, they'll know I'm gone in a few minutes if not now," she did as I said as the car jerked forward and we flew into the night and away to start our new adventure.
-)-
"Charlie will you stop pacing, your making my eyes hurt," Billy complained from his seat in the back of the room, it'd been two years since I'd left Italy and the vampire controlling world behind, we'd moved to Folks that year setting up roots where I'd run into an old friend, Billy Black, a man I'd served and known for as long as I could remember. But we were happy here, I was the chief of police, I was happy when I got that job; I loved protecting people and was happy I could still do what I loved.
"I can't, I'm too nervous," my pacing picked up speed as I continued to walk faster now, and I was nervous, I could feel the effects happen already, I needed to stay out of the room for this and I was both guilty and nervous about being so far away, it could never work if I was close I kept reminding myself.
"You have no reason to be, come on how many times have you been here?" he asked rolling his chair over to me and pulling my arm so I'd sit, I didn't want to though.
"This is my first time Billy, and it's different now, I'm about to know something that's going to change my life forever, you have no idea what that's like," I complained as I sunk to the floor, "this is going to be different, I'm going to age and I know everything will change now, I just don't know if for the better or for the worse."
"Come on, cheer up," rolled over to me once more "Just remember the last few months, how happy you've been."
And I did and couldn't help but smile. The last few months had been amazing, I was now happily married to the woman that I loved and that loved me unconditionally in return, we'd found a place we'd both fell in love with on sight. It still amazes me to this day how someone like her could love someone like me, I was nothing special, I was a warlock and she was a beautiful human that could make even the stormiest day seem brighter. I'd do anything for her and knew she would in return.
"Do you recon that it will look like you or Renee?" he asked, breaking me out of my thoughts.
"I have no idea, but I am hoping that they look like her, she is to beautiful not to share her looks," I smiled as I remembered my wife.
"Well imagine if they were a mix of you both?" he thought for a moment. "Now that would be a handful," he laughed and I slapped him on the head, he didn't know how right he was, Renee's fire and my power, I dare anyone to mess with her.
"Shut up will you," I growled a little, protective but I smiled all the same.
I was once again stopped as a doctor came walking into the room, glancing at the chairs until he spotted us on the floor, he was wearing scrubs something I always dreaded as I quickly stood forgetting my friend as I came walking towards him nervously as I waited for the news.
"You look like I stabbed your cat Charlie," I narrowed my eyes, "relax everything went amazingly, Renee is fine and so is your daughter," I couldn't stop the tears than as I turned to Billy.
"It's a girl, I have a baby girl."
-)-
Two years went by like the last, there was nothing stopping our happiness, Renee and I had become closer than ever and Bella, our beautiful Bella was the apple of our eyes who we both loved unconditionally.
She wasn't much like Renee and I, she had black hair and green eyes where as we both had brown and light hair, it was a mystery but we never questioned it.
I'd never been happier to age in all my life, finally Renee and I could grow old together, as we watched Bella hit an age before she too had a child and started to age with someone I wish loved her as much as Renee does me.
"Charlie, you have mail," I heard her sweet voice as she came strolling into the room with a two year old Bella in her arms.
"Daddy," she smiled as she began twisting in her mother's arms in order to reach me.
"Just a moment love," I was focused on the letter, the scroll in my hands I'd notice and know anywhere.
"What is it Charlie?" Renee asked as she tried to peek over my shoulder.
"Nothing, could you put Bella down for her nap, I'll be up shortly," my voice sounded dead even to me so in a rush Renee did as I asked as she took our child to bed.
I was left alone then as I tore open the seal and read the contents inside dropping the paper to the floor as a gasp left my lips.
"Charlie?" she placed her hand on my shoulder turning me round to face her, I knew what I had to do in that moment, I'd known this day would come but I'd never known it would be so soon. I never wanted it to be this way but with them both in danger I placed one final kiss on her head as I whispered under my breathe to her, watching as her blonde hair turned a coppery brown, her skin turn tanned and winkled, she didn't look like my Renee and that's exactly what I needed. But once that was done I whispered once more as her loving eyes turned to stone, her worried face turning into one of hate.
That was the day my life fell apart, that was the day Renee left me taking my Bella with her.
-)-
"I can't remember any of this," I was forced back into the present where my daughter, now looking like I'd always dreamed she would was sat on the floor next to me, listening to my past as I explained everything she wouldn't remember.
"You were young," I shrugged, "but now you know that you mum and I never stopped loving one another and we did, well I did what I had to do to protect you." I looked up at her then as she pulled me into her arms.
"I know and I love you," a tear fell from my eyes again at that, "what did the letter say though?"
I was prepared for this question as I reached into my pocket and pulled out the old piece of paper, handing it to her as I'd already memorized the few lines.
You chose Charlie, by leaving you have signed your first born over to us, we look forward to seeing you both very soon.

Jasper's POV
I sat waiting on the stairs then as Bella and Charlie spoke, I knew I should have given them alone time and I knew it wasn't my place to listen but I couldn't help it.
I never thought in the short space of time that Charlie has been here that he'd be a warlock, it wasn't just that though it was the fact that that poor guy, the guy who pretty much puts his life on the lone for others every day could have worked for the Volturi.
"Jasper," Peter whispered nudging his head up wanting me to follow, I did reluctantly though following him up the stairs and into my office, shutting the door and almost breathing a sigh of relief when everyone's mixed emotions couldn't reach me.
"What Peter? If you want me to apologise for what Bella did then I'm sorry but I'm not," it was better to tell him straight, what Bella did was only what I would have done, hey at least they were alive when Bella was finished with them, I wasn't sure I would have let them be.
"No it's not that, she had every right and more to do that to us, we understand she was scared, but anyway like I was saying this is bigger than you all think, I know you think this is just the guard coming to collect Bella but you're wrong, this is so much more than that, they're all coming Jasper."
"What do you mean they're all coming?" I knew what he meant, of course I knew what he meant but I didn't want to believe it, it was impossible so until he said the words out loud.
"The kings, the guard, witnesses and the wives Jasper the whole of the fricking castle is coming and I don't think we know just what we're dealing with."
"Well shit," I swore as I had an urge to run downstairs and take Bella in my arms, not knowing I had until I heard her sweet voice.
"What's happening Jasper?" I looked at her, what was happening? I thought I was finally getting everything I wanted, someone that loved me for me, someone to spend the rest of my life with and now what? That was all being taken away? I wasn't going to let that happen, I'd sooner die than letting anything happen to the girl, woman, angel that I love.
"Jasper," she repeated as the rest of the family came in including both Charlotte and Peter.
"I think it'll be best if Peter explained," I didn't want to say the words it all felt so real now as it was, I couldn't repeat what I was told.
So all attention turned to Peter now, it seemed that after their little fight Bella was now comfortable to be in the same room as them, I was a little grateful for that.
"I had a feeling, it was one of those feelings that I could guess what it was about, it was a really bad feeling, it isn't just the guard that's coming for Bella but the whole inhabitants of that dammed castle, they're bringing witnesses also, I think they want to make an example of your family as well as show what power they have." He shrugged as the rest of the family gasped, never have the kings left the castle unless it was to sentence a certain type of crime or put a vampire to death, even then it had to be a huge crime to have this many vampires come.
"But why, I don't understand?" Esme moved closer to Carlisle then as other couples around the room did the same.
"Because I broke their agreement, I didn't stay, they don't know Bella is with Jasper though for that I'm certain, I also think they don't know that the rest of you are part of our lives, this is your opportunity to back out, it's my crime I should pay for it, I'll offer myself."
"No dad, they'll kill you, you're not doing this alone, I'll be right there with you," Bella grabbed his hand.
"And do you really expect me to stand back when my son and only granddaughter is going to fight? Hell no, I'll be right there with you," Emmett came over to stand beside them.
"Where you go I go," I smiled at them; I wasn't going to lose her I'd sooner die.
"You are part of our family, all of you, we stand with you." and just like that the whole family was on our side, all ready to stand beside a girl that had become to mean everything to us.
"Peter and I will stay too, we owe you all for what we tried to do, we promise not to hunt on your land either," Charlotte smiled as they smiled,
"If it's the whole guard and the whole castle I'm afraid that won't stop them, we'll be out numbered both by powers and by people." Carlisle sighed.
"I know, Carlisle do you think Tanya?" I felt the displeasure before I saw Edward shudder, holding back a laugh was a challenge as I watched his face turn sour at the suggestion of the Denali coven was mentioned. I could still see the last time we went to visit and Edward was under the very watchful eye of Tanya.
"I don't know, we can't ask them to fight though, it's their lives," I stopped him this time.
"Yes it's their lives and how many times have we stood with them? We may not be able to ask them to risk their lives for us but we can ask them to stand with us, Peter," I turned to my Captain, "do you remember back, well when we were working together and she asked us to stand guard with her while she confronted her sister?" I hated to speak about that time but if Bella's life was in danger or even remotely being threatened then I was willing to tune into that part of my life.
"Yes where she said she wanted the numbers to, oh," I watch his eyes widen as his emotions turned to understanding, I nodded my head for him to continue or at least explain to those who were confused. "She wanted the numbers to intimidate her sisters, she wasn't looking for a fight at first, she wanted to scare them so having those people she was able to stop them for longer than any of us thought."
Understanding filled the room then as they nodded their heads, they understood that we didn't need the numbers to fight; we needed the numbers to stop the army, to halt them in their attack.
"Would it work though?" Esme wondered as all the attention now turned to both Carlisle and Charlie.
"It just might," it was Charlie who answered now, "They were scared of this family back when I was with them, he hated you because of your power, and if he sees us all standing together it may stop them, just long enough for me to explain especially if the rumours of what those in your extended family are true."
"They are," Emmett beamed as the family nodded their heads in agreement.
Bella's POV
I was beginning to worry, these people were putting their lived in danger for me, putting their lives on the line for me to survive and not to go with the men they seem to be afraid off. I knew they were right, that they could trust Charlie in knowing what he was doing when it came to the kings, but something was telling me we needed more than that, we needed something they couldn't fight with strength because they wouldn't understand what they were. Something was telling me we'll need the wolves.
"Bella?" Jasper called as he tried to grab my attention, worry on his face as I tried to smile towards him, "what are you thinking?" he wondered as he shifted me so he was able to look closer into my eyes.
"I was just thinking," I turned towards them all, "we may need more than just us, we might need some help, the wolves." I stopped to let the news settle, "the vampires wouldn't expect them, they wouldn't know what to do or what they were capable off." I saw look of understanding dance across each face. "But we may also need me," I sighed as Jasper's arms tightened around me.
"They won't expect me to know what to do with my magic, to know I've even come into it, they won't know that I can, that I can fight," I was dreading saying the last word as I knew the reaction it was going to cause.
"No, there is no way in hell I am letting you fight," I heard the growl from behind me and wanted to roll my eyes as I stood from his lap and took a seat next to him.
"Why? Jasper I have my powers, Charlie can teach me how to use them but I won't if I can't fight with you." I tried to reason with him.
"No, I am not having you put your life in danger." He stood then without another word walking at human pace towards the backdoor, slamming the door behind him.
"What's his problem?" Emmett wondered.
"His mate, his Major side is coming free," Edward muttered as he pulled Angie closer.
"Major side?" Charlie wondered," there's only one person I heard with that name or personality, I wasn't sure, he was named the god of war though," he paused, "they never did mentioned his real name," I could see he understood but I wasn't going to sit in the room and wait for him to answer as I stood and took the same path as Jasper had, out the back door and down towards the lake.
"I can't have you fight Bella," he muttered without turning towards me, I just took a seat beside him as I let him get out what he had to say before telling him what I needed too.
"I can't lose you now that I have you, I've experienced that before and I can't do it again Bella, you mean far too much to me."
I stayed silent for a few more seconds before I began to speak. "Jasper, you have nothing to worry about," he looked at me then, "I know you do but you don't. I can feel the power now Jasper, feel it in my bones and I know I can do it, I can take care of myself, but I can't do that if I don't know what to look out for or what to do," I sighed, "Charlie told me I can enhance some parts of myself like my speed, I may not be strong but I can be fast Jasper, I just need to know how to do this, how to move, what to look out for. I need to know I can protect myself and you as good as you can."
I let the news set in as I stared at the gold that was staring back at me.
"I'll teach you to fight but you must do exactly as I say when I say it, understand?" He finally answered as I nodded my head, pulling his towards me as I kissed him with as much passion as I could muster.
This way it, this was where it would all start.
A/N: So that's it apparently, that's all I've written so far which means I now get to write more chapters one at a time!
My god it's cold! I did just buy a Slytherin blanket (pfft me in Grffindor? Hells no!) and my cat stole it! So instead of getting under the overs I am sat in the cold while I try to write as well as apply for jobs while I'm at it.
Anyway here it is! Hahaha not long left from the looks of it, ten chapters? Maybe less, maybe a little more but still!
Anyhoo until next time,
Jess
