Do You Want to Build a Snowman?
Elsa looks out her window out her window. She doesn't quite know what she's looking for, only that she can't look back at the frozen room behind her.
She almost cries when she hears the daily knock, signaling that Anna is here.
"Do you want to build a snowman?" She asks. Elsa continues to stare out the window, trying to tune her younger sister out.
But she can't. Anna always asks it, though she doesn't know why. The sun is shining, the birds are singing. But yet she asks it. She urges Elsa to comes out and play with.
But she never does. Anna doesn't know why. She doesn't know her sister is doing it to protect her. She only knows she hasn't seen her older sister in years. She tries to bring her out, she tries really hard.
It never works, though. Anna wants to know why Elsa shuts everyone out. Every day she asks that same question. "Do you want to build a snowman?"
Of course Elsa wants to build a snowman. But she can't. She can't hurt Anna again. She doesn't want to take that risk. Elsa knows one day she'll be queen.
She'll have to learn to control her powers by then. But how? Every day they get stronger, and every day her control over them shrinks.
But one day, a beautiful snowy day, Anna asks her again. "Do you want to build a snowman?" And this time Elsa answers. "Yes," she says weakly. "What?" Anna asks, thinking she is hearing things. "I said yes. I do want to build a snowman." She stands up, reaching for the handle. Her hands shakes.
Should she be doing this? Yes, she thinks. I have to do this. I can't hide forever.
She grasps the knob and turns it. The door creaks open. Anna smiles so wide her face looks like it's going to pop. "Let's go build one!" Anna yells, grabbing Elsa's hand and dragging her to the courtyard.
Together they roll up a ball. Together. That's something that hadn't happened in forever. Then they complete a snowman. Not just a snowman. Olaf. Elsa smiles, crouches down, and grabs his arm. Using her Olaf voice, she says, "Hi, I'm Olaf, and I like warm hugs." They giggle.
And together the two of them play. They throw snowballs at each other. They get a sled and take turns pulling one another around on it. Everything is perfect. Until they go back inside. They were out there all day, and now it's getting dark.
Elsa has absolutely no idea what to do. She can't go back into hiding after a day like that. So she does the only thing she wants to do. She spends the night in Anna's room.
It's the best night of her life. Her and Anna catch up on pretty much everything.
Once Anna falls asleep, though, Elsa lies there, wondering if she she can keep this up. What if she hurts Anna again? There'll be no mamma or papa here to help her.
Elsa doesn't go to sleep that night. She's too restless. The next morning Anna gets up and get Elsa up. She takes her to the kitchen where the few chiefs they do have fix a big breakfast for them.
They eat and spend the rest of the day together. And Elsa finds herself enjoying it. She knows she won't go back into hiding. She knows she can control her powers. She just has to try.
