I just rewatched "Hugo" myself, and I agree about how interesting they made the inspector. I think you wrote him well in character, and was amused by the fact that Hugo slips into his room late at night to switch leg braces. Some might call that bad timing...but at the same time it was adorable.

A beautiful, enlightening, heartwarming fic. I love the Inspector too. He is such a Javert-ish character. I wonder if that's where his character ( movie- wise he wasn't really focused upon in the book if I remember correctly). Also there is Hugo's name... But I digress.
Your characterization was lovely, the language perfect for the type of story, and I adored the "I think kindness fixes people" line. Because the inspector is, really, a broken man who seeks to be irreproachable, although deep down he longs for affection as much as everyone else (that kind of is what the book and movie are about- "fixing" broken, purposeless, and forgotten people).
This was wonderful. Thank you, and keep up the great work.
